Signing up for a 2 hour hare scramble Sunday on a course I've never ridden. Pretty sure i'm gonna roll down a hill, catch on fire, and die. Got some new tires on the way but I didn't know which ones to get. It seems like everything but soft/intermediate tires are made for durability and long life, and I just wanted the stickiest hard terrain tire. We'll see how the MT16 Pirellis do. No time to convert to tubeless like I'd hoped.

Really excited to pop this bad boy on; then I can finally get a new filter and some oil into the bike. Watching my bike slowly leak out oil the crank case makes me sad.

How hard would you guys say removing the muffler/cat from my headers and installing a y pipe is? I don't have any of the tools required, would it be worth to pick up a set (reciprocating saw, metal grinder, everything else I've got) from harbor freight and learn to do it myself?

How is the jump to a liter bike?
I've ridden a 600 twice, and spent a year on a 750cc cruiser.
I have 6 years riding on a ninja 250.
I'm just super nervous about jumping to a liter bike. I don't really want to drop the dosh on a 600 and outgrow it in a year.
How fucked up is the acceleration in first gear? How easy is to wheelie and avoid wheelie-ing?
Any tips you guys could recommend?

if you've ridden for 6 years you wont be whacking the throttle open when you intended to give it 10%, or dumping the clutch. its not that the bike is hard to control, its that the consequences are high and new riders dont have the control mastered. but really, if you've ridden a 250 for 6 years why are you worried about getting bored with a 600? you wont get bored with any bike over 60hp if you're using it properly.

Getting the initial experience is really difficult, not many people want to take on someone without any knowledge whatsoever. That being said, you don't lose anything by asking but keep in mind that you'll be doing the shittiest jobs for a long time until you get the sea time necessary to move up. It's not what a lot of people expect it to be, it's over romanticized. Welding a pipe in is a bitch if you're new to the whole welding thing. If you're planning on some DIY type shit I suggest getting something better than a $200 harbor freight MIG welder from personal experience.

Local welding shop near me sold me a nice 3-in-one welder for $800 that does TIG, MIG, and Stick. I'd look into one of those if you're dead set on doing fabrication and shit for your bike.

A full exhaust will probably do you better otherwise.

The bike I was working on was dual-wall chrome pipes, four into two with crossover, to two muffler-cat combo "cans" (long mufflers with built-in cats. This was not a sport bike.) I hacksawed the pipe between the cross-over and muffler/cats. The slip-ons slipped over the pipe and clamped on with a gorgeous chromed machined-from-billet hose clamp. It clamped tight and leaked not.

Point is, the pipe cut quickly and cleanly with the hacksaw. The saw left nice edges. Only a modest amount of elbow grease was administered. Unless your pipe is made of CF or TI or some shit that you shouldn't be cutting at all, then just cut your fucking pipe. With a saw. Because that is how pipe is cut.

It's not that interesting. Somebody pulled out in front of me while looking the other way, I hit them at about 20mph.

To be fair to them, there was a van in the way so there was no way to see if anything was coming without sticking the nose of the car out first, it was just bad timing.

When I hit the car I got thrown upwards but sort of landed on my feet next to the bike still holding the handlebars, the next day it felt like I'd been forced to do 1000 ab crunches against my will.
