I went to a few dealerships to actually sit on some bikes recently and found that being 6'2" is a pretty big advantage in most cases, since I can flat foot anything but the tallest adventure bikes.

Although they seemed kind of top heavy, the Kawasaki Versys and Suzuki Vstrom were really comfortable. If I could find either for around $3500 or $4000, would you say they'd make decent first bikes? I'd like something practical to commute on (40 miles a day/4 days per week currently) and something I could enjoy on the weekends or even go on a couple day long road trip once or twice a year.

Not the samefag as the person being asked the question, but in Canada we use metric however because of our proximity to the USA we end up having the learn a ton of imperial and end up with a bastardized system.

For example I weigh and measure myself in feet and pounds, however long distances I measure in kilometers, shorter distances up to about 100 feet I measure in feet after that it goes back to meters.

Weighing food goes back and fourth between grams and pounds depending on the food. Fluids I measure in liters/ML's, I don't drink so I don't have good bearings on quarts and oz's.

A 2013 versys 650 is my first bike. Very easy to deal with power, enough of it to do highway trips without issues even at 6'3.5" 240lbs plus gear, but not too much power to the point of being worried about snapping the throttle open.

The height takes a little bit to get use to, especially after a motorcycle school where everything is very low off the ground. The weight I don't notice a ton, though it being top heavy makes it want to lean into turns a bit more which is not bad.

For all I know the throttle cables were 20 years old and I think I might have stressed them too much when putting the nipples back in after installing heated grips. Kinda bent the cable a lot because I was an idiot and didn't think to slacken them at the carb end back then.
On the plus side they should last me until I sell or crash the bike.

I had problems with an air valve and a fuel pump and I was lucky enough that I could bypass both things. I'll try adding the pump again at a later date perhaps, but I think it makes the bike stutter between 4k and 6k.

I couldn't bypass the faulty tach, so I got a fugly ass one for like 20€ on a local place here.

Oh yeah and remember the carb saga? My tank rusted beyond salvation on the inside. It was also starting to leak. I ended up dropping 100€ on the problem and now there's a tank somewhere in between Athens and Mallorca.

On one hand I'm proud of all the things I learned, but on the other hand I lost count of the nights and weekends I spent working on this thing, and uh... I think I'm about 650€ into it already.

AND I think I may try restoring the MT03 back to life too once I get the money. S-s-send help anon.

Not familiar with any of those,
but isn't the tank supposed to be sealed and once the engine is running the fuel valve get opened by creating a vacuum in the tank?
could that be part of the problem?

The rusty tank it's an ugly situation, should have been the first thing cheked when you bought it and dropped the price by 150€.
Considerind you paid what 600€ for it? you could have gotten a working shitbike.
But that's a negative perspective for lesser beings.

I'm currently considering either buing a new set of contact breakers or switch to a electronic timing plate, less failure prone, but it's 100€ more expensive.

Gah I'm not entirely sure. On the CBR F3 you can gravity-feed or use solely the vacuum from the carbs to draw more fuel in. The F2 has some (91-94) vaccum mechanism related to the tank I'm not very familiar with, but that's another bike.

I got it for 900€ working with the only known problem being the bad rotors. In Madrid I could have picked from a ton of different bikes, but in here things are a bit harder to come by. Back then I was way more inexperienced than I am now... Then I went full service and started replacing bearings, plugs, filters, oil, pads, discs, painting things, removing rust, then I replaced the slightly bent triple tree and front fairing support... it really adds up when you sum the numbers.

I'm already getting 3k for the MT03 as a total loss, but other than that I get to keep the bike if I want. I'm wondering if by bending the chassis back to shape and replacing all the plastics on the rear plus a couple of other details I can make it into a functioning bike. Or maybe just sell for scrap but... muh babbies first bike. Plus it's in really good shape too, or at least was before that accident. I still gotta make up my mind about it.

I think you might be able to get a frame for the mt03 for 7-800€ if you can't recover it, then you can either keep it or sell it as a working bike, or scrap for parts and fuck it.

I'll be honest, if I was in your position I'd sell the cbr to cut the losses since you got them insurance bucks and get a working bike.
And maybe do something like putting the mt03 engine in a small boat.
