Return of the useful OP text edition.

>Obtaining a CDL: How do?
Community College or a dedicating truck driving school. Do your research and don't get sucked into a "school" that's actually just a meat grinder for a shit company.
>How can I into avoidings shit companies?
Here are some decent/good companies:
http://pastebin.com/Sv0cyWyH
If you don't see the company you're looking at included on this list, lurk moar.

>I could totally go to school but I'd rather be a trucker.
If you think you'll love the lifestyle, maybe. You'd be better off getting a real job. You can fall back on trucking at any time, but it is essentially a path of decent money for those that fail at everything else.
You can have good business sense and work ethic and make it big as an owner operator, but you would do even better at any other job.

>You will get fat.
>The only clothing you'll own are pajamas.
>The only reason you get paid well is because you work 70 hours per week.
>The longest relationship you'll get is 15 minutes with a lizard.
>Eating nothing is better than roller dogs.
>You have the most dangerous job in the nation.
>The D.O.T., Police, and Le'dash-uh in receiving hate you, and will harass you every chance they get.
>Other drivers hate you.
>Your job will be obsolete once self-driving trucks become available.
>Your loved ones miss you.
>If you don't change careers you will forever be considered a cuck and a homo. Especially if you cuckbox with another fag driver.

Aspiring truckerfag, I was wondering if someone has, or knows where I can go to get, any information regarding a skill performance evaluation certificate. I looked at the website but was having trouble really comprehending the process, and the guy on the phone had a hell of an attitude (especially considering his job is supposed to be to help people) and just kept repeating the same lines from the website without answering my questions.
From what I understand, I'm supposed to get a DOT physical, the physician marks that I need a SPEC, then I get my CDL, and then an appointed individual rides along with me in the truck to verify I can safely drive the truck.
My concerns were 1) if I get my CDL, then what's the point of the SPEC? If I couldn't safely drive the truck, I would obviously fail the test. And 2) what happens if I get my CDL but then the SPEC guy is like "nah"? I feel like there's a really good possibility of me quoting my job, spending $3000 and living in another city for a month just so I can get a CDL and then be considered unfit to use said CDL

Bus driver here, gotta run logbooks because I have a trip to Illinois today (from Wisconsin).

It's kind of a bitch because you have to fill out a logbook for at least a week before you go out of state. I didn't do this so now I had to backwrite all my trips for the last 7 days.

At least we're still doing paper logs for now.
>>
>>15281343
When people cut me off coming up to a red light or cut in front of me and slam on their brakes to make a right turn onto a side street or parking lot. I don't really get mad, but I wish I could just smash into them to teach them a lesson about how dangerous it is.

>be me
>drivin' the governor at 65mph on I-95
>trucks only allowed in right 2 lanes, no trucks in left 2
>car in 2nd lane doing 55mph
>can't pass on right because merging traffic and other people passing slow ass on right (another annoying thing, pass on the left fuckers!)
>go for a quick pass on left in 3rd lane
>car I'm passing speeds up to 65mph as soon as they see a truck passing them
Evrytiem. Easy solution is to just start drifting into their lane and scaring them away.
>>
>>15282075
Why not just write a log that says off duty? You were local for the last week and therefore not required to keep a log.
>>
>>15281962
If you ever fail a DOT drop, they watch you while you piss on subsequent tests. If you think it's difficult now, try pissing on command when somebody is staring at your junk.

>>15281425

>>15282246

I do this all the time. There's that rare redneck with balls of steel that won't budge but most people get the hint that big truck = big trouble = slow down/merge away

MY WORST FEAR, REALIZED

>>15282036
Do pull a me and rip hektik skidz while blasting Super Eurobeat on the touge

Got new brake pads and rotors installed yesterday. I took it to my buddy who is a mechanic. Turns out when I got my wheels aligned and tires torqued to spec at Pep Boys, they over torqued the lug nuts and cross threaded them with the studs. Long story short I had to buy new studs and lug nuts because of those ass hats.
>>
>>15282456
>Pep Boys

>>
>>15282387
I've seen truckers do that when they didn't mean to. Have you ever seen a minivan flipping end to end and coming to rest on it's top? I did, when a trucker sideswiped it and the driver freaked and lost control.

I remember a trucker not liking some bikers on I-40 in AZ somewhere out in the middle of nowhere, but the bikers were too nimble to get hit.
>>
>>15282075

As a tow truck driver having to fill out logs when I go over 100 miles from home is so fucking annoying. Then I get harassed at every scale I have to stop at because I don't have my last 7 days. Jeez, I wonder if its because I need to do logs once a month, if that, and most of my trips are 2-3 hours, if that.
>>
>>15282228

The skills test? Basically it's the morning pre trip. Tires, windows, air lines the lot front to back pretty much sain aloud what you are supposed to be looking for in regards to whatever you are currently pointing at. Cracked, bent, broke torn worn, fraid or as my Nigerian buddy would say "and it is not afraid." I wonder how he's doing..
Next is the practical skills: 90 back. Straight back. Offset backing once you pass those it's the driving course. Essentially you need to keep animatedly checking you're mirrors every 7 seconds and not cross any white lines or bump any curbs and stay at or 5 under the speed limit and you finish.
If it's just the permit you meander into the dmv say "I would like to take the cdl test and all the certs. Plz"
And then it's multiple choice questions

>safeway for heartlung
>lumps again.
I'm Givin a play by play of them to the dispatcher in the hopes of never being sent here again.

Naw, he's OTR and only gets paid when the truck is moving.

Dispatch fucked him over on purpose. They needed somebody to babysit the load over the weekend and all the other drivers refused it (probably because they'd already been burned) so they told ShafferAnon a bunch of BS (drop n hook, early ok, no freight, blah blah) to get him to take it without too much fuss and then blew him off after that.

Most likely, gordo's big ticket items are giant rolls of paper and insulation from the factory, the aluminum floor is like 1000lbs lighter so they can shove more product in as for the insulation they kinda extrude it into the truck so non stick is a plus.

Probably a mechanic trying to prevent home oil changes. When I did an oil change a month or two back, I was doing pull-ups on the socket wrench and bouncing on it to make it move.

They ARE North American trucks, they've just been shipped to Russia.

In fact, they're so obviously American in everything from paint to small items like rebel flags and playboy bunny crap that I'm betting that more than a few are stolen. Like that white KW with the McLane trailer. The trailer at the very least is undoubtedly stolen.
>>
>>15288318

I wouldn't say stolen.

Ever wonder where all those thousands of company trucks and old trailers end up? They're usually auctioned and exported to Russia.
>>
>>15288318
Do they make decent money?

Those guys deliver to a lot of the same stores as me and it seems like a shitty job. Their warehouse is up in Ocala I think, maybe Kissimee. They have to team drive, come all the way down here, unload the shit by themselves at a bunch of stores, and then finally drive all the way back up north. Not sure exactly what their schedule is but it has to be shitty.

They are dumb fucks too. They always unload at 7-11s and gas stations and drop the shit right inside the cooler door in the center of the damn walkway when they could easily put it off to the side so other people could get to the rest of the cooler.
>>
>>15288683
No idea. I've never even talked to anybody that worked there I just recognized the trailer. I figure they couldn't pay me enough to do that job.

>drop product where they damn well please
Just like the zero fucks given in blocking the store parking lot and entrance when they're making a delivery.
>>
>>15289682
Of course, just so they can get that ramp right to the front door. Like a year ago they pulled up to a gas station I was delivering to and totally blocked any of the ramps up the sidewalk and shit. I know the job sucks and they are some rednecks, but jesus they are lazy dumbasses.

...and whats the truck everyone wants these days?
>>
Alright, I just got done for the day and cranked up the truck for cool air. Out of nowhere the AWL light is on and my dash is now flashing PAM/camera.

>>
>>15290984
Volvo gets the most shit, nobody wants an international esp. one with a haxforce
>>
>>15290984
In 'Murrica, International is like the Chevy Sonic fleet car that a company bought 5000 of because they were the cheapest possible vehicle. The Maxxforce engines and all the elctronics are just shit and the ride is awful. Freightliner is a bit better, the company truck for people that don't totally hate their employees. But if you were a 60yr old super trucker whose pride and joy is your truck, you wouldn't buy a Freightliner. Kenworth and Peterbilt are the same companies. Nicer and more expensive than the other two so you don't see them as fleet trucks as much. Volvos are supposed to be really nice to drive but when they break down in the middle of nowhere, have fun trying to get somebody to work on it and the parts to fix it.

Accurate, but would add that Volvos are also notorious for finicky little shit, like seatbelt suddenly won't pull or retract, power windows not working, dome lights randomly flickering, dimming, turning on or off, fuel gauges fucking up, and also their proprietary "ishift" robotic shifter is incredibly failure prone and frankly unsafe.

bridge_formula_sample_confi.gif
5KB, 280x202px
What's the deal with the bridge formula? Apparently you need to have five axles with two tandems and a distance between the outermost axles of 51' to be allowed to weigh 80k, which I guess makes sense for daycabs with 40' tanker trailers, but your average semi (with some overhang) has around 38'-40' of distance from the rearmost trailer axle to the kingpin, and then another 20' wheelbase on the tractor (which roughly coincides with the kingpin position), meaning you could weigh 85k if it weren't for the 80k general limit. Why not raise the limit then? Put another axle on your average semi trailer and you could already weigh 90k even. Why not?
>>
>>15292837
Because the average weight of loads don't go up that high because 'MUH UNION'.
And also because axles are expensive.

However, europe has 44 T O N N E S with 6 axles.
>>
>>15293278
Five axles are enough actually as long as the tractor has three axles, but most trailers including container chassis have three axles anyway so usually it does add up to six axles.
>>
>>15281343
I used to do this then I realized it's a dick move. Sometimes I still do if the truck is smcrawling up to the light at like 10mph and has a ways to go.

>>15292837
They do go higher. Pic related - pure Michigan. South Dakota doesn't even have an axle limit.
>>
>>15292837
Last year when the highway bill was going through congress, raising the 6-axle limit to 91k was debated, and for a while it looked like it was going to happen.

Politically, the freight rail industry was lobbying hard against it, for obvious competitive reasons, but trucking and rail lobbyists pretty much cancel each other out in a situation like that.

The in the end the debate came down to safety concerns and stopping distances, not the effect on bridges or pavement. The DOT issued a statement to congress saying that it would be economically beneficial for the country, but they didn't have enough data to make a judgement on the safety concerns, and there was no money in the budget for such a study. After hearing that, most of the supporters backed out.

The primary trucking lobbyists on this, CTP, really dropped the ball. They directed all their resources at arguing the economic benefits and didn't have anything to counter safety concerns. It's 6 years until the next highway bill will come through congress. In between then and now, they need to get positive distance and stability studies funded, or it will never happen.

It really is a coin toss. The 12 I drove had to be re sealed like 4 times and then it started leaking from the clearance lights into the side cubby onto my head
This 15 hasn't leaked from the windshield yet but the driver's door is a sive, my arm will get drenched and the truck Litterally off the line after mine leaks 100% through the windshield so bad he stuffed those expanding tampons in the crevice and you could see an outline around the windows from outside

I had a truck like that when i worked for gainey. 2005 kw t600. Driver side wind shield caught a stone. They put a new one in. Then sealed it 6 times. Finally sent me to a kwc dealer. They sealed it once. Never went back.

The truck i just moved out of was an 07 columbia.

550 hp
1950 torque
140mph governor
Electronic egr delete.
Dd60 14 liter
Eaton fuller straight 10 speed.
Best damn freightliner ive ever had.
>>
>>15303577
I started in an '07 Columbia when I first got the job at Skyline. Don't have specs and it was governed at 65 with an Eaton-Fuller 10 speed auto but motherfucker could pull. It was a hardy truck for sure but I don't particularly miss how cheap the interior was. The Cascadia is a small step down from the Pete 386 I was in before, interior-wise, but it's still stronger. Not quite as stronk as that old Columbia though.
>>
>>15303601
Yeah, i miss the columbia. Shes still sitting on the yard waiting for the boss tondecide her fate. (Sale, rebuild or yard/spare truck) thqt old thing has a lot more pulling power than this cascadia. But the cab was load as hell.

What the fuck? What is the highest speed limit in the US? Here in western Canada the highest is 120 km/h. Not even fucking close.
>>
>>15303786
>What the fuck?

Having governor set to 140 mph doesn't mean you can go 140 mph. Setting it that high is just like saying "yeah my truck isn't governed" but ofc you still have to follow speed limits.
>>
>>15303828
...No shit. I'm not THAT fucking stupid, but 140 mph on a truck seems crazy fast, so I'm curious what the higher speed limits are.
>>
>>15303865
Sorry. For highway speeds, like 75 mph is the highest I've seen. I wouldn't want to drive a truck that fast bc poop would come out a little.
>>
>>15303786
The highest im aware of is texas at 75 mph. I had the truck up to 80 once or twice buy due to speed ratings on yires wasnt brave (read as stupid) enough to go faster. Due to gearing ratios in that truck i assumed i might touch 100 mph before i blew the engine. But once again i never tried. The boss says my neq truck doesnt have a governor on it either. I can vouch foe its ability to hit that 75 mph mark but i havent tried for anything faster.

Speed rating is for the casing, so it applies to all tires. Recaps usually fly off the casing well before then, though.

Most trucks over 300hp can break 100mph given the appropriate gearing. 18 speeds are the obvious choice for triple digit trucks.

>>15310352
None. As far as I can tell it's little more than a written warning. A "I know you did something wrong, but can't prove it" thing.

The level 3 inspection is just checking your logbooks, licence, insurance etc to make sure you're legal. Level 1 will also inspect the truck/trailer to find air leaks, brakes out of adjustment, flat tires, etc. (The Dunsmir, CA scales shut me down once overnight for a flat on my trailer. If you're entering California southbound, always stop at Weed and check 'em.)
>>
>>15309972
>do companies let you wear your own clothes?
Unless you've got a local job where you interact with a dozen customers every day, there's pretty much no chance of your company telling you what to wear. The dress code for most truckers could be described as "homeless casual"
As far as things to bring, as mentioned you'll need some warm clothes even in the summer. Shit gets real up north even when it was nice 100 miles ago. Some sort of water resistant boot or shoe since plenty of shippers, truck stops and company yards are muddy lots.
I'd recommend a bag with toilet paper, disinfectant wipes and aerosol air freshener for when you're stuck somewhere with less than ideal bathrooms and really have to poo.

Call dispatch and tell him. He says load 4 cancelled. Head to load 5.

What time does load 5 stop?

>dunno head over anyways.

61mph. The struggle is real.
>>
>>15304456
Thats one my cons on weather or not i should stay swift...governors are bullshit
>>
>>15313119
Do you work for prime?
>>

May Trucking Company. Only trucks I consistently pass are CRST. General consensus is you'd have to be pretty stupid to get a speeding ticket in this company.
>>
Im thinking about switching from dry van to flatbed, what am I in for?

Sweat and exhaustion. Pack lots of water and an extra set of pjs.

Be ready for other drivers, this has happened to me

Strapping my load almost ready to leave. Another driver walks up to me english is not his first or strongest language. This was in dearborn mi at ford.

>move

No.

>move your truck.

No.

>I go get someone. They make you move.

(At this point he walked away. I finish securing my load. He comes back as im climbing into my truck another guy with him)

>this driver says you wont move

He's fucking crazy. Im leaving right now.
(Brakes released and gone)

They called my dispatch.
>>
>>15313863
Why'd you tell him no? I usually just bow them off until I'm done
>>
>>15294930
>safety concerns
But the more axles, the more brakes. How else would overweight permits ever be possible?
>>
>>15313908
Im not sure... Honestly i usually ignore them also.
>>
>>15313972
Heh...

"Ok man just gimme one sec I gotta get my straps off the ground"

"Yeah man I can't move until these are tight, company policy"

"Well I can't leave if my tarp is all floppy, now can I?"

Were you blocking the exit or something? Or was he one of those impatient shits?
I remember one time we were re strapping and re tarping a lumber load and we had a Mexican guy come up to us yelling about needing to leave in spanglish and my trainer puffing on his cigar slammed the pipe we used to tighten the straps down looked at him pointed at his eyes then the strap he was working on and went back to tightening
He looked at me organizing the bungies and walked away.

Looking back on it we may have been blocking a spot but no one else approached us till we were done.

Did dispatch say anything?

starting swift trucking classes on april 12. costs 3900 in total and ill be contracted for 13 months. got my permit first try on monday

how did I do? am I fucked? Me and my friend are doing it together, so I'll always have a buddy to drive with
>>
>>15314377
Oh really? Your mentor will let both of you in his truck?
>>
>>15314377
Swift is decidedly shit tier, but take solace in the fact that they aren't quite to absolute worst to start at. If you're teaming with your friend it'll either make your year at swift bearable or you'll hate your friend and never speak to them again.

well, except for the first 250 hours of mentoring obviously

>>15314554
ive been good friends with him for about 5 years now. hopefully it doesnt suddenly go sour I guess.

>>15314377
Unless you specify you want to be teaming with yer buddy the odds of you ever seeing each other again is pretty slim.
>>
>>15314573
thats why were starting on the same day together. so theres no confusion about that.

Kek
There was construction around a bridge and 'low clearance signs' errrwhere. I followed the detour as best as I could and kept reciting in my head "don't pull a whiney, don't pull a whiney"
Thanka famalam for guiding my spirit

>>15312132
How much did they get you for?
>>
>>15314042
Ive used all of those. The answer is always the same.

>MOVE NOW!

>>15314089
Nope. I wasnt blocking anything except the stack of racks ford was putting on me. The guy was just being impatient.

>slammed the pipe we used to tighten the straps down looked at him pointed at his eyes then the strap he was working on and went back to tightening

Kek im going to use that next time.
>>
>Pull into Pilot
>Angled parking spaces
>Pull down middle of two opposing aisles
>PTL truck already lined up, backing up
>Sightside back
>Literally ten minutes and about 30 pull-ups because he kept pulling up just a foot or two instead of using all the space in front of him
>Blindside back into a space across from him in 2-3min with 2 pull-ups
If he was a nub, he's old for a nub. Dude's beard was graying. He also stopped mid backing to chat with the driver of the truck on his blindside.

>While backing into my spot
>Behind Schneider with a van trailer
>He's 2-3ft over the line
>Creeping back with both feet on the clutch and brake
>Bump harder than intended
>Hear on the CB
>"Think you got close enough to me?"
He was cool about it though.

Aahaa! Bumpin' butts in the truck stop I see!

Is it normal to bump into trailers when parking like that? Do the drivers get super pissed if you do?
