Truckerfag Thread: Rollerdog Disco Edition

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Thread replies: 329

Well, looks like I'm the one to start this thread again.

Anyways, it's the Truckerfag Thread. Where we don't haul 44 tones, get fat on rollerdogs, and are the bane of motorists everywhere.

Feel free to ask questions and bitch about how I don't have the pastebin.

You don't have your actual Class A license? If that's the case you'll have to go to school, join a company who will send you to school, or find someone with a trucker who will train you.

Seriously though, look for a company based in your nearest major city, and get on somewhere that offers tuition reimbursement.

does training diff from class b to class a?
>>

That I do not know. Should've just gone for the Class A from the beginning though.
>>
>>15253891
And go where no road licensed rigid could possibly imagine.
>tatra and Unimog BTFO
>>
>>15253823
Depends on what you wanna drive. Class b is dump trucks, rock haulers, and garbage trucks. Depending on where you are you can earn as much as or more than class a. For instance Houston was desperate for class b garbage truck drivers.
>>
>>15253823
Well class B is not for combination vehicles (truck+trailer), and the weight limit is much lower, though I forget what it is (class A is up to 80,000 lbs, or it might be 80,000+ assuming you've got permits. Haven't looked in a while.). I don't know about where you are but class B also doesn't include air brakes systems around here. This is why we always recommend just getting a class A. Get your air brakes endorsement and maybe you can get a job running a dump truck, cement mixer, or garbage truck.

Go to their school. No upfront costs. Get your CDL and then quit before you go out with a mentor. Find a different company to hire you and reimburse you for your schooling tuition.

Swift has awful mentors, DMs, and politics/culture in general. You aren't allowed any personal conveyance. You don't get any bonuses. Your mileage is never consistent. I fell for driving for Swift and it was horrible experience.

Your railroad will put you through getting the mandatory dangerous goods training again anyway when you hire on. The interview is kinda strange in that it's more of a personality test. As long as you keep an open mind and don't act like you know everything you should be fine.

>>15257225

We're required by law to give three long blasts of the whistle and one short one at almost every crossing. At 60mph we usually start to blow the whistle about a quarter mile away. Cities and apply for permits to allow us to go through crossings that have automatic gates with just the bell but the government makes it a pain in the ass to get. They're either blowing it for you or trying to get some animals clear of the tracks. Sometimes I'll flash the brights when low flying aircraft are coming the opposite direction and they'll flash back. It's kinda neat.

HAH well I don't think you missed much, heard Subaru owners are a bunch of cum-dodgers anyway.

>>
>>15259356

The cabs are soundproofed well so it's not really all that loud at all as long as the windows are shut. I've had timesome when I was a conductor walking on the platform of the locomotive when the engineer forgot I was there and started blowing the whistle. Hurts your ears like all hell. When the mechanical guys test the engines the whistles have to blow at least 96db.

One time one of you guys was blocking the crossing that goes to our terminal and he moved back to let traffic through.

Pretty much made my day.
>>
>>15259595

We're only allowed to stay stopped at a crossing for five minutes. If you're ever in a bad mood and your stuck at a crossing and the train is sitting there, the back of the crossing road sign will have a milepost number and a phone number to call. If you call the number they'll get told to get the fuck out of the way.

On the territory I work we have a few places where we pull into short tracks to let other trains go by where we would block crossings. The conductor has to go back and split the train in half to unblock the crossing while we wait.

>tfw Swift driver

Imagine a kid who's parents have told them he's going to Disney Land. He gets so excited and can't wait to ride all the rides there. He gets there and his parents keep him on a leash. He doesn't get to ride any rides because they are "unsafe" and only got to take pictures with Cinderellas step sisters. He also had to refill the same water bottle from drinking fountains because the sodas were too expensive.

That's me starting my career as a truck driver.

My friend. I went to Montreal this weekend. Saw this 4 times on the way up. 3 times on the way down. Asked buddy in the passenger seat to check who was driving. Punjab/Indian/Paki fucks. No respect for the rules.

Why is such a major road only two lanes?

Here in the UK, most major highways are three lanes.
Three.
Lanes.
A truck can pass a truck, and cars can still get past.

Hell, on the M25, I've seen a third truck passing a truck that's passing another truck, and there was still two lanes for traffic to get by.

American roads are shit.

I'm actually in Canada. The #1 highway through the prairies really doesn't need to be anymore than 2 lanes each way considering very few people have to commute on it for long distances daily. The UK is the size of a small American state, with a way higher population density. We do have three plus lanes in/near cities and heavily traveled areas, but it would be insane to pave a third lane on our entire 46000 mile (I think that's about a billion km) interstate system

If you think you'll love the lifestyle, maybe. You'd be better off getting a real job. You can fall back on trucking at any time, but it is essentially a path of decent money for those that fail at everything else.
You can have good business sense and work ethic and make it big as an owner operator, but you would do even better at any other job.

Now that I'm stopped, mini-story time

>I-40 westbound, North Carolina, east of the Tennessee line, entering the gorge through the Smoky Mountains
>Lone black Freightliner Classic pulling a white van comes up behind me
>No trucks left lane, winding mountain road, truck speed limit 50mph, two-three turns with 45mph speed/rollover advisories, one 45mph construction zone, one tunnel with 35mph advisory
>Obeying everything - except the tunnel advisory. No one does.
>Doing 5-10mph over when it's straight, not kicking the brakes or anything
>Cross the Tennessee line, nearing the end of the truck limitations zone
>Still just the black Freightliner behind me, been practically tailgating me but never attempting to pass
>Suddenly truck flies by me, cuts me off by about a foot or two, no signal or anything, and slams on his brakes in front of me
>Slams the brakes a second time
>We're now doing 25 in a 50
>Averitt driver passes with a 'wtf' gesture
>Mad af Freightliner crawls ahead, clearly he's also pretty heavily loaded, or has a weak af truck
>Trailer has clearly marked ID number and company phone number
Shoulda called highway patrol though, maybe then the asshole would actually get his ass chewed.
>>
>>15272351
I don't understand your broken English. Did the tailgating freightliner cut you off and slam on the brakes?
>>
>>15272372
Yeah, he was either just being pissy and wanted to slow me down, since I was obeying speed limits, or he was legit trying to get me to rear-end him so he could make a bogus insurance claim.

Thank god air brakes are goat and for my cat-like reflexes or I would've smashed into that guy. Fucking box trucks man.

>Parked at end of row, at the corner of the lot
>Additional spaces in front of me, but perpendicular to me
>They're far enough forward for me and the trucks near me to leave without issue

>Come back out to find a truck parked at the end of the line in front of me, but almost a whole truck width apart from the next truck, and not in a marked parking space

You're only supposed to give advanced notice when you're taking more than 5 days off. Two days off for 2.5 weeks out is the type of shit that makes drivers quit.

I honestly want to buy my own truck and go O/O with a good company. I started looking at trucks and I can afford to buy a used one, but which company is good to be O/O for, and which brand of trucks will be the easiest to work on/most reliable?
>>
Should I use my company's routing instructions?

>>15274858

>>

Gainey used to give one day off for every 8 days on. But only up to 3 days off. If you were out 4 weeks you were not gauranteed a 4th day off. I used to run 4-6 weeks out with them and used to get 3.5 days.
>>
>>15274941
Is it that difficult finding a company that will work with you on home time? I've seen a few companies that offer 2-3 days off per week. My buddy offered to get me on with Kold Transport and they usually give about two days off per week as well.
>>
>>15274863
As with all routing programs, they're to be treated as a suggestion and nothing more. You ALWAYS research the route first and if the company's routing makes sense and has no surprises (low bridges, weight restricted roads, etc) it may even be the best choice but don't just go with it before checking in to it.

Hell, Swifts routing used to route trucks on Deal's Gap and some drivers would actually try it ffs. As a rough rule of thumb, if the road shows as a squiggly line on the map you probably don't want to go that way if you can help it.

>>
>>15275643
Used trucks are only like $30-$50k, I was just gonna put a down payment of 10% and finance the rest. I'm not going independent, just O/O through the least shitty company.

I will itasha the fuck out of it though, so look forward to seeing a weeb missle on the interstates.
>>
>>15275737
TF was an o/o with Werner before he went under his own authority. I suggest doing the same. Start off with some company and learn o/o on their dime. Then, switch to a better o/o company (landstar is a great national company for o/o) and once you're comfy and can handle your Trucking expenses etc, then consider being independent.

Trucks deff come at any price range but it's the law of specialization that applies. Either buy a shitbox for $15k and make it your own for another $15k OR just buy a $60k truck that has some life in it with low miles and older MY. Anything in between is just inefficient cost for you or a bad deal.

Free up your truck and then buy a dry van or reefer, depending on what you see yourself doing.

Best of luck whiney, we're all rooting for ya

Remember whiney most of these mega corps are controlled by investors not people. They don't really see us as anything but a spreadsheet. We're a renewable resource that they can pay less for. That's why werner is pimping owner ops again. So they can make money off of them and shovel the risk off on shit runs and justify the mechanics they have.
Also why gordoland hires no one who has a cdl into the dispatcher office

As for going owner open I'd hang in for another year and get a freightliner heartland is helping in oversaturating the market with the sell at 350k plan
I'd go with landstar but I haven't looked too far into the owner ops. I'd hold off on f2f only cause 1. You'd need to put in effort and 2. The mandatory year grooming tf's beard is quite strenuous.
>>
>>15276017
I'd probably opt for the $60k truck, might be a little more expensive to startup with initially but I don't have many expenses outside of my car. My uncle is selling his Freightliner (2005?) for $10k, I think he just rebuilt the motor too. Would that be something to look into?

Thank you for the support, senpai.

>>15276059

Looks like I blew the fuse for these 20A sockets, the 10A still work. Odd, considering the laptop supposedly only draws 171w peak, and it should take 240w to blow a 12v 20A fuse.

>>15277972
Not this one, it's just straight 12v socket, but you need a 20A socket for it to work full power. Technically 25-30A would be preferable because it's capable of peaking at 400w without blowing its own fuse. Now that I've fiddled with it for a few minutes, I think the 20A circuit has a shutdown timer, because it's cut off before, but on a tiny car socket phone charger for no reason.

>>
>>15278321
>940M
Gross, I doubt that's hardly better than Intel integrated. At the same time though, that i7 is no doubt leagues ahead of the A10 in this laptop, which bottlenecks the fuck out of everything. No point in a 7970M when your CPU can't handle lighting and effects above 'low.'
>>
>>15278257
Not sure. It doesnt seem very loud compared to my old truck.
>>
>>15278390
Fuck I wasn't aware the 940M was that's bad, even the i7 is only dual core. I dropped in an SSD and HyperX RAM which helped quite a bit, you should look into an SSD since they're dirt cheap now.
>>
>>15278550
Nah this thing is dated now. It's three years old I think, and it sold so poorly they didn't continue it with new versions. The CPU bottleneck is absolutely awful, but AMD doesn't make any FX line chips for laptops, only the A line APUs. I'd have upgraded to an Intel+AMD laptop if there were one that wasn't a MacBook. Even now, the latest of those has dropped the GPU entirely for Intel integrated. My next notebook will be a Sager, I just can't decide if I want to keep it cheap and get an i5+965M configuration or go balls to the walls and get their behemoth with a full unlocked desktop line Core i7 and full desktop 980.
>>
>>15278631
You could also wait for the laptops with a 1080 to drop. But I'd go used if possible, gaming laptops go obsolete quick, unless you have the dosh to drop on a new one. I considered getting one but all I play is WoT and my Vita has caught my attention again.

Started with a Pete 387 and it was pretty loud inside at 65. Definitely not easy to hear conversation from the right seat.

Moved to a KW T700 (basically the same as the 387) but this apparently had the insulation package and it was noticeably quieter but still fairly loud.

Now I'm in a T680 and it's much quieter than even the T700. You can have a normal conversation at 65 mph. This one also appears to have the insulation package. Read an article online and it said 76db for the T680 which is close to car levels of noise.

Driven a few rental Cascadias and Volvos here and there and they seem about like the Pete I had. Particularly the Cascadias.

>Odd, considering the laptop supposedly only draws 171w peak, and it should take 240w to blow a 12v 20A fuse.
you are assuming that your inverter is 100% efficient. It's probably more like 70-75% efficient. So to output 170w, it required 240w input. The other 70w just went to heat because lol cheap transformers.

This is why it's worth it to use 12v devices whenever possible, even if you have an inverter. Less loss. Find a car charger for your laptop if you can and you'll probably stop blowing fuses.

Might be worth it to stick an ammeter next to the power plug so you can track your load.

Get Risk of Rain on vita and we can play that some time. It's a side scrolling action game with random item drops like Binding of Isaac.

Didn't blow the fuse though. The 20A sockets came back on when the truck fired up. Must be a shutdown timer.

Could also be a thermal protection style circuit breaker.
