How about a manual non sport bike. Plenty of options. Otherwise you might as well get a scooter
>>
>>15202292
I've owned 3 (NC750, VFR1200, CRF1000L). They're great for commuting through town, especially if the drivers are too psychotic for lane splitting. It's not a perfect technology, there's a definite learning curve but I think it's better than manual unless you want to pull wheelies (in theory, it's capable of it).

I'd definitely suggest a test ride, some people can't get on with it.

They definitely stiffened up the response time with each generation and the shifting is much more aggressive on the VFR than the NC. The DCT on the Africa Twin also accounts for gradient, automatically giving you a lower gear for both up and down hill to assist with acceleration and engine braking respectively.

I need your help bike mechanics.

I bought an 05 ninja 250 last week and it was running fine when I got it, but I fucked something up I think by running it with the choke on full too much. Now it doesn't idle at all without the choke on.

Also I tried to play around with the idle adjustment screw and the bike doesn't respond to it at all. It's turned out all the way and I actually have no perception now of where it's supposed to be.

The bike actually runs OK, it just idles really high (around 2k-3k). Vid below is me riding it today:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8Uiogf1PC8

Any ideas on how I can fix this? Zero mechanic skills and all the shops are booked out two weeks in advance because of the season. I have read that I should just put some carb cleaner in the gas and beat the shit out of the bike by redlining it everywhere and in general being really rough which may help shove some of the gunk out in the carbs.
>>
>>15202536
It took me about 8 months from the accident to the money ending up in my account, pester them at least weekly.
>>
how many accidents have you had while riding? i want to get a bike, but my main fear is ending up on a fucking wheel chair
>>
>>15202697
6, mostly on the 125. Wear decent armour and try not to end up under a truck. Part of the fun of riding is taking a machine that by all rights should murder your ass every time you get on it and taming that smug bastard.

Fuck 8 months? I wrecked my bike at the beginning of may, just sent over the appraisal to my insurance guy(12k to repair, worth maybe 8k so it's totalled).

I hope it doesn't take that long... I miss riding so bad.
>>
>>15202717
>thinking you've tamed your bike

Are there any manufacturers that make off-the-shelf boots in grotesquely wide fittings? I'm currently wearing size 12 (UK) boots as the shortest my feet will fit in, even though in length I'm a size 7/7.5. Not idea in terms of actually fitting and offering good protection.
At the moment, the only option I can find is Altberg's custom fitting, which requires me to travel up to Scotland and fork out £600 for the last making + £200 for the boots.
>>
>>15202697
got the license for 8 months, dropped the 125 once while going 30km/h on ice, fell on my elbow but nothing really happened, was wearing full gear
also dropped the CB500 against a wall while maneuvring
>>
>>15202733
Just keep hassling them. Don't simply accept that it's ongoing, ask what's going on at every stage. They fouled up and lost paperwork for everything from the appraisal to the payout. At one stage, I'd argued them up by a grand on the payout then, when the receipt for the payout came through, they'd 'forgotten' all about it. Keeping records and demanding everything in writing also helps.
>>
>>15202731
>>15202697

There are people that just seem to "get it" when it comes to being a good driver and anticipating what other drivers are going to do. I think it's genetic honestly but you can see it when they drive that they are just on a different level of awareness than most people.

Then you have people that don't get it...and decide to drive a motorcycle anyway. These are the idiots that get wrecked at intersections, hit people backing out of their driveways, hit oncoming traffic during canyon runs, etc...

The issue is that even the first category of driver will succumb to user error crashes sometimes. You just make a regular turn and hit a cobblestone walkway (very popular here) thrown in the middle or road snake and you'll slide out and wreck.

If you know you're a good driver then you'll be fine unless you encounter some incredibly terrible luck or the minor user error accident every now and then.
>>
>>15202697
Once. On about my 4th/5th time out, took a corner too fast in the rain exiting a roundabout (poor signage, thought I'd missed my turn and it turns out it was the next one anyway), panic braked, and lowsided. Rode the bike down (DUMB) and slid for a bit so had some nice bruising, but leathers prevented any atual harm. My squishy meat-parts cushioned the bike's fall though, so no damage.
>>
>>15202738

The GS is a little more dirt oriented than the Versys and wee strom, so depending on how much street vs dirt it may be a better or worse idea. Also if you're looking for cheap go with the Jap bikes, parts and maintenance on the BMW are going to be a lot more expensive. There aren't really any other options for cheap ADV bikes, there's the 650 dual sports but it doesn't sound like that's what you want. There's also the KTM 640 adventure but it will have the same downsides as the BMW along with being a pretty rare bike

THIS.

Get a dirt cheap bike to learn on, and nice gear. Keeps you safe, and having comfortable gear means you ride more and gain more experience. Then, when you move to a nicer bike you already have nice gear to go with it.

Better gear is for more than just crashing. A set of comfortable gear means one less barrier to riding, which when you're starting out is really needed. If you're confidant that even if it starts to rain, or gets a bit cold, or gets a bit hot, you'll still be comfortable, you're far more likely to get on the bike in the first place. Conversely, gear you know is going to leak, or will be too hot, or will be too cold, is a deterrent to riding.
SUCKI T UP FAG works when you HASE to ride (e.g. commute), but riding for fun in shit gear is mere self-flagellation.

only was asking 2200.
In fact I didn't even do anything on this one at first, he was telling me what all it needed and said "id take 1800 for it" and said he was going to pull the ad down til he could get it running.

He said he thought it only needed a battery. That was a red flag to me. He lived 6 hours away from where the bike was at, aka his parents. Said he had a lot of interest though and wanted to get the bike running before anyone looked at it so he pulled the ad down wednesday night.

Told him if I could come and get it running this weekend I'd give him 1500 for it. He said sure.

Stole a battery out of my buddy's rzr. Threw it in, took some cranking but eventually started. Has sat in a shed for 2 years.

So what it needs:

Valves done, carbs cleaned, chain and sprocket, new tires, oil change, turn signals (front ones rubber has weathered and cracked and now the front signals dangle, i have duct tape on them til new ones are here). Also got new levers cause the ones on it are janky/mismatched and a new like-oem set was only $12.99. Also got a new clutch cable, stocker feels meh.

So I just spent $534 in total. $1500 for the bike. Paying a friend $100 to adjust the valves and $50 to mount/balance the new tires. In the end I'll have about $2200 into it and a completely mechanically sound bike that's super clean.

I love this end of the 90's era of sportbikes and stoked I found a clean one like this.

Outside of everything it needs it still rides pretty good. Rode 2 hours home. Runs surprisingly good for sitting 2 years.

Hell it runs/rides good enough I can imagine a lot of the shitheads on CL would of jumped on this bike and rode it and done nothing and just trashed it.
>>
>>15204064
we've already had the argument. riding in the rain sucks ass regardless of the gear.

and I still am a firm believer in buying gear as you go along. A shit bike is a shit bike is a shit bike. I know, all I have owned is shit bikes.
>>
>>15203998
Much as I want a HUD, the Skully is SHIT from an engineering standpoint.
It's a near eye display, but it is NOT focussed at infinity, so you need to context-switch between it and the road. The display is also placed down and to the right, which just compounds the context-switching problem.
Bad designer, no cookie, go read the design manuals and copious public data on the design studies for aviation HMDs. Then come back when you can try harder.

The RIGHT way to do things would be to use a collimated setup at infinite focus, with either a flat reflector in front of the eye and collimating lenses in front of the display, or a curved collimating reflector like that used in the F-35 HMDS.
>>
>>15204074

Why?
they are easily the worst 250cc dirt bikes and that one has a good 200+ hours of riding on it without an engine rebuild, at the very least it is going to need a new piston and rings, worst comes to worse it can cost upwards of $2000 to do the repairs that bike could need if it needs a top and bottom end rebuild and it probably will being a 250 that was ridden on the road (its been screaming its rings out its entire life)

There you go, the bike needs at the very least a piston/rings kit, it could possibly need a top end rebuild kit and a bottom end rebuild kit as well and there is money so you could easily get that bike for $1000-$1200, it likely won't need the top or bottom end doing being a klx but its a good bargaining chip to play on people that do not know much.
>>
>>15204201
wow, you're awesome. Thanks for that info.
>>
>>15204211
Don't forget valves, start the bike and if it does not start literally the first turn over say "valves are fucked too, thats another $100 or so ill have to spend on it"

Only made them for a few years. Maybe parts would be a hard thing to find but I never looked into it. Hydraulic valve lifters in it too so no adjustments. If you find a clean one I dont see why not.

neat. they seem to hold value decently for your typical 30 year old shit bike.

That bike has stock tires still.
It's either first set from 10 years ago or someone voluntarily bought them.

You're so manly kit Kat. We're all impressed with your big powerful bike you ride

you can get strips in like an hour of riding.
the tire can still be worn, but if you havent done it recently it will still look like strips my man.

not that it fucking matter anyway, he could be rossi tier on a track for all we know.

When I started I knew literally nothing about motorcycles apart from the fact that I wanted to learn. I don't regret my 250, I'm gonna move to a 650 or similar when I'm on my next license class though

Swear to god I'm gonna start building and selling "chicken strip removers" that you can just clamp to the frame and scuff up your tires.

You thought a ninja 650 was terrifyingly fast.

Fuck off
>>
>>15204480
you're 6 feet away from the tire.. you cant even see if it's scrubbed from there.

if you scrub a tire to the sidewall, then ride home 30 miles on the highway it's going to look like strips from 10 feet away. especially on a dirty ass city street. are you daft?

He's right though.. And just wearing it means nothing. An actual scrubbed tire will have waves and creases in it. Any idiot can just lean the bike over doesn't mean you're actually working the tire or going fast.
>>
>>15204516
Terrifying levels of fast may occur even on a 250.

I'm in Utah.
License classes are 90cc, 249cc, 649cc and unlimited.
You get a license of whatever type the bike you test on. MSF class gets you a 649cc restriction.

600cc supersports are more expensive than liters here. Bike dealers have shitloads of cruisers that people are too lazy to test for and buy.

I'm from Australia. We have L plates, P1 and P2 then unrestricted. L-P2 are limited to 650. I just didn't find it necessary to get one when I can ride a 250 for a year or so and gain confidence and get a 650 when I'm on my P2's, then maybe something bigger after a while and get my unrestricted

Open it up and connected to the carburetors there should be a choke cable. Take it out and see if the spring has come off of the pin.
