Is it possible to lock up your rear wheel from not shifting? Say I redline third gear, get up to 60mph, and then just let off the throttle and the engine braking immediately starts as I slow down. Can this cause the rear tire to lock up?
>>
>>15204834
I have an oldschool full faced white helmet kinda like a gingo, some dirt gloves, with dirt goggles. i wear black jeans and a black hoodie. is this sufficient?
>>
>>15204854
no. As the engine is still turning, the wheel will still turn. You will just slow down, slowly.
>>
>>15204854
no the drive train has less resistance and momentum behind it than the wheels, rubber, pavement.
>>
>>15204854
Only way the wheel would lock up under that scenario would be if your engine stopped. If its still running the wheel is still turning

>>15204845

Yes
>>
>>15204854
no. also most sportbikes have a back torque limiting slipper clutch too.
>>
>>15204899
If it *seizes* then yes, but if it stalls, say if the ignition stops igniting or the injectors stop injecting, it will keep spinning, spun along by the spinning of the wheels, spinning, spinning along.
>>
>>15204899

No because it will just roll start it and say it stalls becasue spark fails it will just chug along as if it wants to start.

The foward motion of the bike will be greater than the resistance of the gearbox.

Is that an Eliminator?
>>
>>15204899
If your motor is seized then yes your back wheel will lock up. If it's not seized then it will not lock up. How do I know? Because I've push started a million bikes a million times at a million different speeds. With a motor off, dumping the clutch will slow you down and turn the motor and will not lock up the tire. The faster your going the easier it is to jump the bike this way.

Try it sometime, go out, hit the kill switch, when the motor is off, put it back to run and dump the clutch it'll fire right up... if it doesn't fire up, like if you leave the kill switch on it's like applying the brakes, you're essentially dragging the drive train.

Already ordered.

Got it home and ordered new battery, chain and sprockets (cancelled for now), new levers, new clutch cable, new tires, new brakes, and everything for an oil change. Then after I have the new motor in the DRZ and it's on the road - taking the zx9r to my buddy to have him adjust the valves.

Don't buy a sports bike just cause it would be easier. Unless you have the money the buy a sports and then then cruiser that you want. You could get a nice cruiser, 500cc and that will be enough for a beginner. Not too small and not too big. You'll be happy with it for a long time. I made the mistake of starting on a 250 cruiser and wanted to upgrade right away.
>>
>>15205629
Most twin or single cylinder four stroke motorcycles up to ~650cc and ~80hp are generally suitable for new riders.

Depends on what style you're after honestly. Cruisers are slow and heavy, proper sporbikes can be uncomfortable etc.
>>
>>15205658
Okay, thanks man, I'll keep that in consideration. Any suggestions for beginner cruisers?

If not then just fix it, using locktite and a proper lock washer on the counter shaft nut.

It ran for 1-2 minutes while spewing oil before I realized what was going on and turned it off. Countershaft is not stripped, sprocket was completely off of it. Going to tear it apart tomorrow and check inside the cases for damage. It needs to be back together in two weeks so I can go to Tail of the Dragon.

Yes.

It's 15/39 which is pretty high, it won't rev higher due to lack of torque to overcome aero, not lack of gearing. I top out at like 87-89mph depending on wind, I was WOT when I was chasing this truck and it blew up.

I was on a 44T rear sprocket for willys, but I installed a 39T rear sprocket last week for 70mph at 6700 RPM. My top speed was about 95mph with the 44T because I could actually get to 10k RPM in 5th, now it doesn't have enough torque to rev over ~8k with the 39T, leaving me at about 87mph.

I'm pretty drunk does that make sense?

>You're not wrong, but GS500 a fucking shit. Only thing worse is EX500, any hyosung and Buell Blast.
FTFY
>>
The GS500 is objectively the best beginner bike.
> mileage
It's a mid-sized 4stroke twin cylinder bike, so it drinks less than 6 liters per 100 km.
> handling
It handles nothing like a supersport, spoiling you for when you get something else. But it can also corner much better than something like a cruiser, and actually uses its entire rear tire unlike a Ninja 250.
> brakes
They are complete shit and their only redeeming feature is that they're disc brakes. This is good because the longer braking distance forces new riders to plan ahead and start braking early. No ABS means they learn to brake properly I'd they don't want to get shrekt.
> power
It sits right at the power limit for A2 bikes which is great for euros. It's torquey enough to be faster off the line than most cars you'll encounter in the city. But it also feels relatively gutless so a) it's forgiving of mistakes and b) you can ride it at the limit without putting yourself into too much danger. It reaches up to 180 km/h which is fast enough for highway riding.
> carbs
It being carbed means that if you run into problems, you can learn to fix them yourself instead of heading to the mechanic every time.
> seating position
Upright, slightly forward means it's a neutral riding position so you can figure out what you want afterwards. The seat is relatively uncomfortable making literally every other bike after it will feel like heaven on your ass.
> price and availability
Parts and the bikes themselves are cheap and plentiful. If you crash and fuck up one of your fairings it's 40 euros to replace it with original parts. Engine needs little maintenance. Beginner riders are typically not financially independent, so this is a big plus for them.
> suspension
It's a budget suspension factoring into the overall low cost of getting a GS 500. If you want better suspension it's easy to swap. Therefore it gives beginners an opportunity to learn working on suspension while keeping the cost manageable.

Pull apart the left switchgear block and poke around for loose wires.
>>
>>15205875
m8 no. By that logic you would get the best top speed by gearing it for 8k rpm at 100mph. torque combined with how fast it is spinning determines the amount of force it is able to put to the ground to overcome the wind

USD doesn't mean better suspension though. USD just means it's upside down. It doesn't mean it actually does a good job at suspending the bike and absorbing/dampening bumps. It's becoming VERY common now for manufacturers to use cheap USD forks for looks/marketing points yet they aren't actually designed well so they feel like shit.

99% of people can't tell their fuel mixture by feel and don't have a dyno or any equipment to analyze the fuel mixture. It's not as simple as turning a screw and changing jets. Good carbs are actually somewhat complex mechanically. To get them working optimally you have to use the correct needle, clip position, pilot and main jets, float level, accelerator pump squirt strength and duration, etc.

1/4 mile is not a hugely relevant measurement in the real world usually, unless you're pulling onto an autobahn or an interstate in a very specific region of Texas from a dead stop for some reason.

The 250s and 300s are stretching their performance window at about 1000' anyways, they'd be much more competitive on a 1/8 mile.

Late for riding in the rain while squidding is shit
>>
>>15206386
It is easier to dig shallow graves in the wet dirt, we understand.
>>
I think I saw the Skid Demon today. I was knee dragging and out of the corner of my eye I saw a shadow in the tree line.

Popped a wheelie and refused to look in my mirrors until I was a mile away.
>>
>>15206392

I just got caught in the rain on my way home from nightriding though
>>
>>15206400
