A thread for our beloved econobox pocket rockets. Talk experiences, ask for advice and questions and generally shitpost about the Fiesta ST.

>"Literally does every motherfucker drive a Fiesta ST now?" Edition
What would you buy that isn't a Fiesta?

Previous Thread: >>14916664

>What is a "Hot Hatch"?
A Hot Hatch is a manufacturer produced, performance oriented variant of a standard hatchback, designed for improved handling, increased top speed, acceleration and generally enhance the driving experience.

>Are all Hot Hatches FWD?
No. Whilst most Hot Hatches are FWD, some are AWD or even RWD.

>Isn't FWD shit?
No. Just because you can't get the arse out by stamping on the accelerator doesn't mean you can't have fun.

>Aren't Hot Hatches just for Europoors?
No; with the launch of the Fiesta and Focus ST in the US, it seems like the Hot Hatch is beginning to take of on the other side of the Atlantic, but Europoors definitely have more choice.

>Is the Fiesta ST actually good?
The Fiesta ST is one of the best small hot hatches on offer at the minute; so yeah they're pretty good.

I don't know anything about it out side of 100 hp for 800 kg and having a decent space behind the front seats

getting to 1200 kg and 200 or 300 hp now I guess
and with much better diff and suspension
but utterly shit interior and no cool body kits or decals

I have actually driven the Swift Sport, but they're a bit more expensive than the fabias I'm looking at, and I do big trips to Le Mans so they are a bit small for all the camping gear.

I'd have to go lower mileage Swift because cambelt, but I can do higher mileage Skoda because timing chain. So the Skodas work out cheaper.

dude why aren't you spending money upgrading the shit out of your 1992 corolla? That would be boss as fuck.

Look at this boxy fucker. About 1000kg before stripping anything, 2400 mm wheelbase. Damn that shite would be fun to sling around a turn.

You know that money you're going to spend on a new car? Upgrade the suspension and wheels instead.

Upgrade your brakes and engine. Do something silly, there's a ton of parts out there for this thing. Maybe swap it, go forced induction on the base, be absurd, spend 10 grand.

What is this world coming to that someone wants to dump a '92 corolla instead of making it awesome?

>without tax discounts leasing one of these costs about as much as a GTI
>real world daily range is about 120km, about 80 in winter
>Renault sells cars with a seperate lease on the battery and lifetime warranty, but if the battery of your VW EV gets tired or breaks you'll have to pay for the replacement yourself
>emissions can be up to 150% of those of a regular compact car. They're just not coming out of the exhaust, but the local power plant
>if you're charging it at home you're paying about 60% of the price of regular fuel per km (at least in germany), charging at public stations costs more. Still cheap, but running a EV is far from free.

What's nice about EVs is the lack of maintenance parts, apart from tires and brakes. Suspension parts are suffering though because the EV is much heavier than the regular variant.

>tl;dr
An EV is nice if you don't keep it for too long and you have your own supply of renewable energy to charge it (ie your company's warehouse has a roof covered in solar panels)

source: friend #1 got talked into leasing an EV, friend #2 is running a 2009 Mustang GT for about the same money. (roughly the same annual mileage)
And that's in germany, with expensive fuel, displacement based taxes etc
>>
>>14970371
>emissions can be up to 150% of those of a regular compact car
Golf OP here. Also, add extra weight.
I'd like GTE because that optional silence, daily mpgs and practicality not purely because of money save neither because that (lacking) driving experience.

>>
>>14979449
Yeah, eTune/ProTune are the same. Cobb AP, sending logs off to a tuner who replies with revisions to your custom tune, reflash, relog, repeat until satisfied.

I never bothered with the staged OTS tunes from Cobb although I have them.

If the MS3 is anything like the Fiesta it's 100% worth it. My tuner offers unlimited revisions for ever, for any parts change so I went ahead and purchased it. I might go big turbo in a year or so but not planning on it anytime soon.

So whats the main difference between the FiST and the FoST and which one will I get more enjoyment out of?
>>
>>14989053
FiST = god machine
FoST = fat, bloated, can't turn, not as fun but has more room if you're into that sort of thing

the fiesta is more fun on twisties and the focus wins in a straight line.. but if you're getting a hot hatch you probably care most about twisties.

drive them both and decide for yourself though.
>>
>>14989053
Focus has a bigger engine and makes more power but it's also 500lbs heavier than the fiesta.

If you want a little bit more straight line speed go for the focus, if you want a lighter nimble car get the fiesta.
>>
>>14989421
>>14989190
Thanks for the responses, from what you said I'm definately leaning towards the FiST. I'm going to test drive them both though before I make any final decisions.
>>
>>14986036
I like the new Clio, but it's shit compared to the old one. Might try and look at Meganes.
>>
I looked at that FiST's interior again and to me it hasn't become any less of a pain to look at. Good that I'm not about to choose a car as I'd have a dilemma to either vomit inside the car for the better look of the interior or lose that fun of driving a FiST.
Hope you enjoy yours and they are reliable as 2.3liter is said to be.
>>
>>14991257
I couldn't have had a base interior, with the Recaros it feels marginally more special, I like the basic combination of modern amenities (automatic climate control, bluetooth, USB ports, etc) and simplicity in the Fiesta's dash layout.

>>14989053
It's pretty subjective. If you need more space or have passengers the Focus is the better choice. If you don't then the Fiesta is a bit more fun and quick, though slower.
>>
>>14991273
>I couldn't have had a base interior, with the Recaros it feels marginally more special
I meant the seats are the only thing I like about FiST (and they ARE good). Not the opposite. I hate everything else and while generalising "everything else" I am close to what I feel. I even dislike the exterior a lot. Simply, that's not a car for me, even if I'd like to drive that once.
>>
>>14991313
It's definitely an econobox, but it's the perfect daily complement to an actually-powerful weekend car.
>>
>>14991330
I'm not insulting it being an econobox as I'm no more than poor and yes, it is a great compromise between a DD and weekend car, but information screen(s) could look better, radio/hazards/etc panel stinks of Chinese Walmart hired designer, you dive deep for AC controls and such. There is huge space for improvements maintaining costs on the current level.
>>
>>14991359
You can actually voice control the temperature which is pretty funny, but yeah you do have to reach for the climate controls (though, who drives a sporty car with the AC zapping all your engine power? haha). The Fiesta is the cheapest car in Ford's lineup and the ST trim is a reflection of that, I'm just glad they put the extra money into performance bits rather than luxury bits.

I haven't been disagreeing with you, the interior is cheap and rattles quicker than most from the hard ride. Overall it's a really great value. Definitely not the car for everyone, however.

good hatch for a complete poorfag?

it doesn't have to be a "traditional" hatch either, a coupe with a hatch rear will do as well, I just want the "trunk" to be connected to the rear passenger area via fold-down seats or whatever.

I see there are a lot of focus zx3 on craigslist. also I have never driven manual but it my current living conditions I could borrow a daily as I learn, though considering I city drive auto might be better as a starter. I want an RSX but they're all 4k+ for a decent one.

Fabia VRs/Seat Ibiza Cupra are cheaper alternatives to the Polo and they're basically the exact same car. Polo wins on interior build quality and nondescript looks (if that's your thing), Ibiza wins on colour options and exterior styling (if they're your thing), and the Skoda wins on price. I dislike how it looks like a squashed estate.

Clio RS is a good drive but the smaller less revvy engine and EDC-only ruined the car. It's also retarded expensive next to the competition. The Trophy is an amazing car, though. Like, really amazing.

208 GTi is a fun car but like the Clio I dislike the small engine and the 208 does feel very fat. Steering is numb, too. The interior is a wonderful place to be and the seats are comfy, but the ICE is irritating as fuck because it has to ponder a little while before it acts on inputs.

Corsa VXR is a traffic lights grand prix car and that's about it. Interior is a mound of steamy shit and so is the ICE, which uses screen scraping because Vauxhall/Opel/GM are too fucking lazy to develop a bespoke system. The way it picks up speed put a huge smile on my face, and it handles corners OK if you spec the LSD and tricked suspension, but even then it's not a patch on the ST or the Clio in the twisties.
>>
>>14998822
See, I'm looking to replace my Clio RS Cup, the face lifted 2.0 model fully loaded with all the options except bucket seats. It's been written off in a head on. So I want something that at least feels on par with it.
>>
>>14998845
I guess you'd be looking at the Swift Sport, 500 Abarth, Fiesta ST or Megane RS, then.
>>
>>14998845
On par with it? Another Clio 200 m8. Closest you will get is a FieSTa.

None of the new cars are revvy. None of the new cars feel as nimble or as light or as chuckable. They feel like heavy fast hatchbacks because that's what they are. None of the new cars have such a sweet gearbox with a tight throw and lovely bolt-action feel when you slide the lever into a new gear.
>>
>>14998895
Do you know a bit about their longevity? I'd always wanted 2.0 Clio but I'm afraid they're all rekt inside before I'll be able to afford one.

>>
>>14998953

>>
>>14998938
I bought my MS3 brand new 2 years after it had been in the market for the style.

Do a ton of research, see what prices other people are paying for equivalent to your spec. Avoid the extended warranty, it's a rip off. In fact, avoid all dealer extras, they're all rip offs.

Are you pre-approved for a loan already from your bank? Have that number ready to use to deflect their deals.

Are they firm on the price because REASONS? Ask them to sweeten the deal by throwing in extra shit until you're satisfied.

Finally, be prepared to just walk away. I know you want this car, you know you want this car, they know you want this car. But you don't have to buy this car right away, nor do you have to buy it from them. If they're being inflexible, just walk away.
>>
>>14999015

I've driven the Swift Sport and the Abarth. The Swift felt a bit lacking somehow, I think it was possibly because it was too quiet, and the Abarth was mad fun but the seating position felt too high and the car felt mad small, so not great for the shit I use it for.

>>14998895
Yeah, another Clio would be perfect, but the running costs were starting to hit my bank hard. I had put nearly 35K on it, and I bought it at 44K. And the MPG wasn't great. Fiesta might be the one to go for then I guess.

I went through ball joints, shocks, battery, the fuse for the igntion, 3 sets of tires, a back bumper, an exhaust manifold and a cambelt in the 35000 miles I did in my Clio, it I was almost an 80K mile car before it was in the accident, so.

If you're paying 600/mo after 12k down on 40k, your credit is actually too bad to even be considered for the car from a financing perspective. With good credit and a third of the vehicle cost in down payment, you would be closer to 300/mo.

I hope you never get embarrassed by a 300whp/300torque hybrid-turbo (god forbid you meet a big turbo) Fiesta. :)

I wish I still had mine. I'm properly worried I'm not going to find anything as good as it to replace it.

silver, pic from google, I'm just wondering if I should do something like black/white/gold/bronze

>>15005086
what color 2 pick
i feel like that pic is more brown than I want

>>
>>15005111
I'd say stick with gunmetal, or maybe a muted gold color. That could add some nice contrast.
>>
>>15005097
It's loud and incredibly frequent, but you should at least try it out. You may really like it, but I know other people who had it on for the drive-after-install before taking it off.

>>15005111
I guess Black would look better, a silver car is a bit tougher to get the wheel color right.
>>
I have had a Volvo c30 and just found this thread. I don't frequent /o/ much. I usually just use mine as a daily driver all this time.

do I fit in here? what upgrades should I do to get rid of that torque steer?
>>
>>15005393
Make sure your tires are properly inflated, and your wheels are aligned. Past that, a good set of coilovers may help, or some chassis braces like this:

Okay, small hot hatches;
Abarth 500, Vauxhall Adam S, Renault Twingo RS 133, DS3R and the Suzuki Swift Sport.

Have I missed any out?
What are peoples thoughts on these? Are they the best way to have fun for the least money whist still having a modern car?
>>
>>15004864
The MS3 has way too much torque steer. A hot hatch in my opinion is balance and should be able to do everything.

Thanks, fluid looked clear, level was right, and I didn't see any visible damage. Gonna take it to the dealership, it should be covered under warranty anyways.

it's also 500 pounds heavier than the fiesta st. that kind of added of weight is immediately apparent.

I like the storage space of hatchbacks but I prefer the aesthetics of the celica, RSX and Tiburon.
Do you guys recommend anything similar to these?
>>
>>15008737
RSX-s is your best bet because of dat liftback
>>
>>15008737
>>15008789
The last gen of Celica and the RSX are both lift back, and the rear seats fold for more space. Either of those skills serve you well

I want a hot hatch but I can't drive manual, and I have no way of learning to drive a manual. America hates manual cars so there's no way to rent one or anything.
>>
>>15008831
Just ask the dealer and show that you have a strong intention of buying that exact car. Most of the time the salesperson will take you to a lot and teach you if that's what it takes to make a sale. Some dealers will even lend the car to you for a few days, although that only happens for more expensive cars.

Learning a manual is much easier than you think and will probably take a few hours to a week. Getting gud is the tricky part and takes a few months.

t. Learned manual the same way. The dealership had a specific vin that I wanted to test drive and he taught me everything in an hour, maybe longer.
>>
>>15008831
Surely there's people who do manual driving lessons in murrica
>>
>>15009578
The driving test should be in a manual, like the rest of the civilised world.
>>
>>15009678
In civilised work you are allowed to choose. Get out of that shithole before they completely ruin your mentality, senpai. :^)

Today is going to be a good day. New plugs/plug wires, valve gasket, passenger control arm(ball joint) and I might install my mudflaps.
>>
>>15008918
This.

When I bought my civic coupe, I basically told the dealer "If you teach me to drive this thing, I'll buy it from you."

30 minutes later I was pretty solid, and I never stalled the car ever again.
