so seeing as i'm obviously not going to be able tpo afford any sort of boomermobile in the near future, I've decided to go with a cheap but hoonable car instead
looking for something sub $5000, rwd, manual, p plate legal in SA, not a falcodore (at this stage) that i can daily drive without trouble and hoon at nights. Needs to turn well, power isn't a big issue as i live a 2 minute drive from very twisty roads in the adelaide hills that i enjoy hooning on. needs to be semi-reliable but something I can work on myself
heres some shit i've found so far:

LFS is another good one, though there's not much content, even with a crack.

You can tweak the properties of the demo cars to give them a billion horsepower V12's or huge CC turbo V-twins that make mad torks or V8's that rev to a million RPM with a program though, which is fun.

/o/ please redpill me on Falcons/Commodores, I've got an ae86 that I don't wanna daily any more, and I'm looking to falcodores for something reliable, cheap to run/maintain and a bit lf of fun to hoon. What year/models should I look for? What should I avoid? Do any come with stock LSD?

depends on budget, vy-vz is much better than vt-vx
I think many or all vx-onwards calais v8s came with lsd

manual/auto, engine preference?

alloytec is a pretty good motor for DD, makes good power, ignore cunts eho shit on them for being v6

Because ABS isn't really about everyday driving. It's for when old Granny in her station wagon pulls out in front of you and your instinctive reaction is to hit the brake.

Like it or not in situations like that the computer will probably do a better job than you would.

Watch some motorcycle ABS trial footage. There is a very small percentile on riders who can out-perform Motorcycle ABS (which is much less invasive than what's in a car) but in the vast majority of situations the computer will do it better and more consistently. Even these videos aren't a brilliant representation as they're in controlled environments and factor out your brains OH SHIT reaction.

I figure it could become a crux for new riders who don't learn the correct technique for braking and rely (consciously or subconsciously) on the ABS kicking in and saving their ass.

For people that can brake properly it's a great idea, but yeah, for new riders it could end badly if they learn to ride on a bike with ABS then move up to one that doesn't have it.

There's a RWT video where a subscriber crashes Tom's GF's 125 because he learned on a KTM 390 with ABS and hamfisted the 125's front brake.

Can I ask opinions?
I'm looking at a car, very good price. However it's got several problems that will need fixing before I get her on the road, which will probably cost around $1000. I'm ok with that as long as it doesn't go much higher, but it has done 300k on the odometer and I'm worried lots of problems will start cropping up.
I'm intending to get it inspected and buy it if there's nothing unexpected. But my gut tells me it's a bad idea. However I really like the car and my heart says yes.

Can tan jackets still be worn today or do I need to have a dark coloured one?
>>
>>14935219
Like the anon said, it depends on the car.

You have to think about how much life is left in a car with 300k on it. You might only get 50k out of it before something major goes or you might get 150k, who knows.

It's the smaller things that start to add up with high mileage cars, like bushings for example. If you can't do it yourself it can get pricey to have a mechanic do it for you.

In summary: Work out whether the time/money spent fixing the car is worth whatever life's left in it. Things can and possibly will break purely because they're worn out from all the use the car's seen.
>>
>>14935219
Without knowing, well, anything about what the car is, nobody can have an opinion about if it's a great idea or a terrible idea.
>>
>>14935219

It's a Ford LTD (DL). The seller tells me it's been well looked after and hasn't given him any problems.
From what I saw there were things like a frayed seatbelt, the switch that controls whether air comes in (I forget what it's called) is broken, and what looked like a water leak. And I couldn't tell if the brakes needed replacing, since I had to push a lot harder on them than what I'm used to, but what I drive has very sensitive brakes.
If I get it inspected will the mechanic be able to tell me how likely things are to break in the future?

They CAN last 1 million kms, as taxis that don't go through as many heat cycles, and smash their odometer readings in a short amount of time.
Australian Fords in general from the last few decades however dilapidate around themselves relatively quickly, especially compared to alot of other stuff on the road like your typical Japanese shitbox.

Having said that, there are still numerous examples on the road that are looked after and maintained.

>Supras and skylines are amazing and great fun
>They've also ALL been thrashed to shit
>Expect to pay double what you paid repairing it because of the above
>People memeing on here about the engines being literal god tier are morons

The 2jz-gte and rb26 are amazing, but they are not the end all be all. They're old technology and have some issues you should be aware of.

>While both have blocks rated to take well above 1000hp, you will have to replace internals such as pistons, rings, rods, ect (cranks are usually pretty good)
>The old ceramic turbos are utter trash. If you buy one with one, swap it to a modern one quick.
>They're distinctly lacking in low end torque and are heavy (this is why you see people swap v8's into supras (more on this below) but have explosive power once turbos spool. It can lead to a false sense of security, be very careful with your throttle control around a corner.
>RB's have huge oiling problems. Expect several grand on a modified sump.

Due to these issues, people who own a supra and are chasing extreme capability and have money to burn, swap in either a 1uz-fe, LS, or a variety of other v8's.

Why?

>Low end torque
>Engine is placed lower and further in (better weight distribution and handling)
>When fully built, these engines have a higher max power output

Hope this helps, as i own both a supra and a skyline GTR.

Great cars, but sometimes people over-estimate their capabilities so here's some more honest critique.

>Due to these issues, people who own a supra and are chasing extreme capability and have money to burn, swap in either a 1uz-fe, LS, or a variety of other v8's.
No. Single turbo and high boost on the 2JZ is the way most people go. You see a lot of builds with E85 and crazy amounts of boost (40psi+).
>>
>>14935671
My 1J doesn't lack low end torque when it's on boost, a 2J would be even better and a 3.4L would be very torquey at the low end.
The ceramic turbos are all already dead and have been either replaced or rebuilt with steel wheels
RBs only have oiling problems above 8,000rpm. If you're going above this, you don't spend 'severl grand' on a modified sump, you install a nismo oil pump for $248aud.

People who own a supra and want extreme power and reliability keep the 2JZ and have it built by Gas, Titan or Real Street, all of which will build you a 1000rwkw 2J and warrant it for a year. Only the retards do an LS or other V8, and only the poor do a 1UZ (because it's cheaper than a good condition 2JZ-GTE).

You own neither a supra nor a GTR.
>>
I put the car into 1st instead of reverse and hit a pole.

fml
>>
>>14935676
Yea, which is why i figured the guy buying might want more honest feedback.

I mean, they're great cars and with enough work, can compete with nearly anything on the road....

But there's a lot to be aware of. I see a lot of morons thinking the 2jz is some god engine that just needs more boost, when numerous v8's (and one v10/v12 swap have been very successfully done) are actually better in the supra chassis, assuming you're going for maximum performance and have the money.

>>14935683
And those builds are the easy route. Like i say above, it's cheaper to work the existing engine.

But if you have the money and will be going well above 1000, you're going to need to look at a different engine.

Handling is also improved, in addition to power band and slight weight reduction.

There's more to an engine than raw power.

This isn't true though. Several companies have built 1300hp+ 2JZs that run fine. Sure there's a delay in boost building but it's pretty much irrelevant for anything you'd use a 1300hp car for.
>>
>>14935704
I drive a manual, and I've been drinking a bit.
>>
>>14935703
The RBs have well known oiling problems at high RPMs.
Any acceleration or cornering hard enough to cause oil pressure loss would do the same thing in most other engines and should be fixed by going dry pump for doing it properly, or by getting the nismo pump and slightly overfilling with oil for cheapness.

RBs aren't bad because idiots run them with the oil on the fill line and decide to see if they can hit 10,000rpm.
>>
>>14935715
>drinking and driving
>dick head confirmed
>>
>>14935714
Sure there's a delay in boost building.

Don't you get why they use the v8's in addition to nitrous?

The nos and low end torque assists it off the line, until the turbos spool and peak power is made.

The v8's are lighter.

The v8's are further down and back in the engine bay, behind the front axle, increasing handling.

The highest tier of performance is not extracted from the standard engine. There is more to consider than power, such as how that power's made, distributed, ect...

Handling isn't really a factor in a 1000hp+ build. You aren't using it to drive around corners.

https://youtu.be/nf1u7RQxHIY?t=4m10s
As it has been doing since 2009 and STILL makes over 1000kw at the rear wheels.

The only LS swapped supras you see are done by morons who bought a non-turbo and didn't want to spend $6k on the engine and $6k on the gearbox so they spend $2k on an LS and $1.5k on a T-56.
The 1UZ is the exact same thing, it's only done by people who couldn't afford a 2JZ so they went with the much cheaper 1UZ and talk a whole lot of bullshit about 'improving' the handling of a car specifically set up to be slightly front heavy like it is and one that was not designed to be ultimate in handling like an FD.

Get your dumb fucking head out of your arse and realize that nobody on /o/ will ever need more than the 1400-1500hp you can reliably get out of a 2J and anybody cornering hard enough in a GTR to need a dry sump will have spent more on tyres anyway and not give a shit about the money.

'very real issues'

>>

>>
>>14935747
You are beyond fucking stupid.

Why do bikes accelerate fast? Guess what, it's not power.

There is more to an engine than power, which you were forced to admit right there in your post. Handling does matter, you don't know what a person might be using a car for and furthermore, the original guy had no fucking problem with rb's or 2jz, otherwise he would not own one.

He literally stated that oil problems do exist and there's a higher tier of performance, then enter a few autists to start shit flinging on either side of a debate.

Also, you see ls swapped supras and shit on the ones with blown engines. So stop fast and furious memespewing they're "invincible" because it's laughable.

Cheap power yes, they are not the pinnacle of performance and when the person has more money than sense, they don't stick with a 2jz to make it cheap, they go for something with better characteristics AND equal power.

Would i do it? No, it's an extreme amount of money. But it is better.
>>

I'm also right regarding the supra engine swap improving handling.

Realistically though more than like 700hp in a RWD car on the street is about as far as you'd want to push it, at which point a 2jz isn't really breaking a sweat

LS swapping a n/a one is a fucktonne cheaper than building a +t 2JZ though, a dude who used to post here did it and spent heaps
>>
>>14935784
>32 RBs
Are all dead now. The 33 and up RBs had this fixed at stock revs and can be fixed up above 8000rpm with a nismo oil pump, as has been proven thousands of times.
If you lost oil pressure by rapidly going left to right, you were running with low oil with a shitty early RB pump.

Supra engine swap for weight is what we call being a retard. You don't buy a supra if you want something that handles, they're sport-ified GT cars that weigh 1.6ton by the time they're fueled up. You buy one to cruise and occasionally hit twisties, not to go full takumi 24/7.

>>14935778
>handling does matter
See above. For GTRs, they're built specifically around the RB (driveshaft goes through sump, for example) and stripping weight off the front end doesn't help nearly as much as it reasonably should.
>otherwise he would not own one
Which he does not.
>ls swapped supras and shit on the ones with blown engines
Which doesn't happen unless somebody is being a moron and trying to run 650rwhp through the factory bottom end, this isn't a fault of the engine.
>when the person has more money than sense
They don't buy a fucking supra and swap in a 2000hp LS, they buy something that can take a 2000hp LS or they get somebody who knows what they're doing to build a 2JZ to take 1500hp.

Nobody is saying the RB26/2JZ is the best engine in the world, they're just good fucking engines. The JZ especially, which sound good, are extremely reliable at reasonable power levels and are only 'heavy' when compared to an LS, one of the lightest actual power creating engines ever fucking made.
>>
>>14935811
The LS/toyota v8 supra swaps are either done for na ones but more often, grenaded turbo ones.

The low end torque a v8 provides is pretty nice, plus you can still keep twin turbo power and also get better handling.

I dunno why that one bloke is so fucking angry about it, it's a flat performance gain.
It's not that the 2jz is bad, it's that there's better.
>>
>>14935816

His original post was literally just highlighting the very real issues to let a potential buyer know. You're srsly mad mate
>>
>>14935811
That's why you don't buy a non-turbo.
It's not just the engine, the turbo supras had a much better gearbox, diff and brakes. By the time you fix all that, you've spent more than you would have in the first place or more than you would have for an LS1 + T-56.
>>
>>14935816

I would never do it either, but it's their cars man and they're not going down in performance, they're going up, so what the fuck is the problem?

And the original guy was literally only referring to supra engine swaps and trying to advise on the RB oiling issues.

Not a bad chassis to do a LS swap in, as much as it kills me and my desire to see supras remain pure.

I loathe to admit it, but a LS swap really does make it better. It's USUALLY not cheaper, unless you're doing everything yourself.

You cunts have already mentioned it pushes the weight behind the front axle better too.

Fuck, now i want to try this swap.
>>
>>14935822
Because his original post was fucking dumb. There was nobody in this goddamn thread who was going 'hurr RB26 or 2J bro they make 2000hp stock bro', in fact nobody said a motherfucking thing about the engines other than just 'check them out for gud I6 bro'

Then he comes along and starts spouting this shit about 'anybody' chasing big power engine swaps and makes it sound like all RBs and 2Js are unreliable.

Then there was that bullshit about lacking low end torque, which is only a problem in RB26. A supra with a 400rwhp sized ball bearing single will make more power at 2000rpm than an early LS1, no question.

I'm not the one that started shit, mate. I was just telling a dude to get a 2JZ-GE auto soarer because they can be found in good condition and swap a 2JZ-GTE and R154 in it to make it fun.
1UZ are gutless shit until rebuilt and by the time you've done the work to put an LS in one you could have just gotten a 2JZ-GTE and had something that was designed to go in the car in the first place.
>>
Are soarers actually comfy? As in space inside the car?
>>
>>14935858
How was it dumb though, he gave more information than required but it was still good information.

Of course a supra with 400hp is going to spool fast, but one with massive peak power will not and you fucking know it mate.

That's why they do the v8+ swaps.
They're all heavily built engines too, so compare a fully built 2jz to a fully built lsx and while they'll be around equal on power, that lsx is going to pull much harder much quicker AND handle better.

You come across as an asshole and also one forced to admit you're wrong.
>>
>>14935858
Hold on let me get this straight you're using a 400hp car for your argument on low end torque?

For what purpose? If you want something with 2000hp, buy something made for it.
If you want something as a ROAD CAR and therefore want <600rwhp, there's no reason to pull out a 2JZ and put in a V8.
>>
>>14935887
>600rwhp, there's no reason to pull out a 2JZ and put in a V8.

Actually if you're making a road car, you could argue even more for the v8. Better low end power and handling.

Anyway, the reason smokey made the v12 supra was for that torque down low, before the turbos spooled (because he was going for massive highmounts to get stupid peak power and yes, they're always going to be laggy).

I'm the purist who hates the idea, because it's a horrible idea...but it's not a horrible idea because it's bad for performance.

It's just a lot of money for a mild performance gain and rips the heart of a supra out.

But no-one can deny the performance.

If you're keen on that, check the dash for cracks to see if he was legit, then go right over it checking for rust.

Check the wiring, looks a bit dodgy on the batt. If it doesn't have an alarm, budget in a quality one installed by people who know what they're doing, you'll need one to get it insured.

On the subject of the RB oiling issues, the r33 GTR anon is 100% right.

There's a reason the regular 911 had a wet sump and the GT3 had a dry sump.
Under racing conditions, a dry sump and really good oil pump is the only way to ensure positive oiling conditions.

RB's are fucking awesome though, that sound is orgasmic.

ca18's are banned for sa p plates anyway
>>
>>14935897
Not him but SA doesn't use the kw/tonne for cars made before 2010 unless they've changed it. It's a blanket turbo ban.

Keep in mind coilovers are considered a major defect in SA. Towed home and a full Regency check for any further "problems". It gets expensive fast.

That's the point, though. If you're pushing your oil pump fix'd RB so hard you're running out of oil, it's time to start considering you no longer own a street car.

He made the V12 supra because he could, not for performance reasons.
It made less power than many top secret 2J supras and was more front heavy than them.

And no, you can't really argue more for 600rwhp in a street car, that's the point where you start lighting up 3rd gear and you don't actually want any more low down power because it just spins more.
You can fix this with some sexy tyres, but good luck you're driving on one of NSWs typical roads when it just starts raining after a couple of weeks without it. Might as well pull over and walk home, you'll be there quicker and safer.

So SA confirmed worst nanny state now it's 2016?
>>
>>14935934
Well, he was talking about pure performance cars, so they will be running good tyres.

Obviously it's not for everyone, but it's not a bad swap, there are many benefits.

I've seen some monster swaps though, i once saw a guy put a honda engine in a supra.

Anyway, off to the new thread

I don;t really care for rear seat space, might end up with two cars if I get a coupe of some kind, the other car being something a bit more practical like a wagon. Any other coupes that are comfy with decent amount of space?

So, most Supra parts would fit on Soarers from same gen/era? That would make finding aftermarket parts a bit easier if I were to go down that path with one
>>
>>14936020
Brakes, suspension and most of the drivetrain can be swapped straight across either way, tons of the interior bits are 90s toyota/lexus and work on tons of things.
2JZ ECUs can be used on 1JZs but not the other way around, MK4 supra wheels are a common sight on soarers because they're cheap and you can run 245/45R17 on the front and 275/40R17 on the rear.
LS400 brakes are supra brakes, just cheaper.

>Yeah but all the 1JZ manuals are thrashed to shit, uleh
Same reason my brother is currently talking to someone about buying their RB20DE Auto cefiro. boring nana spec car. but since im told it has the same drivetrain as the skylines an RB20DET should be a drop in swap.

In other news i took my road car to its first trackday. had alot of fun, top speed was 170.1km/h.
