>>
>>14882654
i guess you're right. I'm sure it's a very capabl, although gutless bike. I considered it before i got my BMW, but it just lacked the power and is rather heavy for it's size

also, 10.000 km means nothing, it's how/when maintenance has been performed, and if the bike has been abused or not

and 2,5k to 3k euros looks like the upper price limit for KLE500s here in germany, most seem to be sold for 1500 to 2000 euros

but srsly I'm going to sell two bikes this year.

And this bike was in the "shit bike category" price
but it got new pistons, new cam shaft and new valves.

Looking for a sv650 for a first bike, considering this:

http://york.craigslist.org/mcy/5482796808.html

Contacted the guy, says frame has 23k miles, he did an engine swap. says bike was garage kept, and dings were there when he bought it, but he was sure it had "only been layed down". Says he selling only because he wants a 1000RR.

I smell fish, but what do you all think? If i go to inspect it, what should I look for?
>>
>>14883139
Why is it so good?
>inb4 because ur license goes up to 400cc ;^)
>>
>>14883187
no!
Leather should not be cleaned with mineral water or tap water.
You can wash it in a tub or something but get a two or three canisters of distilled water. The leather wont feel brittle afterwards.
If you want to take extra good care of your leather, get some leather oil. You can usually find leather oil at shops for horsemen. (This sounds strange, not sure how to translate it correctly, I mean a shop where people who own a horse buy stuff for it)
>>

it is the lightest Bandit, with a dry weight of only 163kg or around 360 lbs and revs all the way up to 15000rpm.
And as it was the best bike you could have in japan( they didnt sell big bikes there) it is made verry well, with dual disc brakes front etc.

>>14883234
to play devil's advocate, if this guy got it from someone else and swapped the engine himself, that could be a GOOD sign as to the mechanical integrity of this particular engine. and if he says it was laid down it was most likely laid down (albeit at speed). if it were hit by something or itself hit something at high speed, you would be able to tell. and if it were highsided you would be able to tell. check the frame. small bends are OK (although make sure you test ride that bitch), creases are the opposite of OK. if you have a friend who rides bieks have him ride it for you and tell you what's up. if you on't and you notice anything raising red flags, walk away.

really just look for anything overt that signifies more than cosmetic damage. bikes are generally pretty sturdy and can handle being slid across the ground at speed if they are properly repaired, so don't let rashes or anything like that throw you off.

In a single day I rode it for 13+ hours (16 hour start to finish), from 30°C in Italy to >0°C on La Bonette. Comfy as fuck, coming from a 6'6" fatass. Odometer is currently at 125k~ kilometers. Has never broken down in all that time. Only broken parts due to user error. Very forgiving, decent allrounder. It really doesn't have any weak points when it comes to reliability.

Don't buy it if you want powerwheelies, don't buy it if you dislike a straight up seating position, don't buy it if you're looking to impress the ladies, don't buy it if you're looking to do serious offroading thats not just sand (pic related). no, but it's a bad idea. you are far more likely to completely wreck your bike than you are to completely wreck a car, especially as a new rider. and there is the chance that something happens and you get scared and swear off riding altogether and then you're stuck with a bike that might take a while to get rid of, with no transportation.

just get a small-bore learner bike and see if it's for you. put in 6 months and you'll be able to tell if it's going to be something you can stick with over the long term

You mean before anyone ever tried to design a bike around performance?

That's like saying riding in a blimp is fucking amazing because of how efficient it was before passenger liners.

Hey, asshole. Riding in a blimp is fucking amazing. Not because of how efficient it was before passenger liners, but BECAUSE YOU'RE FUCKING FLYING.
Cafe racers are cool to cafe racer guys, because they fucking like riding a genuine old BMW that they restored with their late father or something, and they like the riding postition with rear-sets and clip ons.

Somebody posted a TDM850 in this thread, which may not be a bad bike to consider. Its a bit more road oriented, but still has a similar seating position and a front wheel thats larger than the rear. More power than the Transalp. Its not as faultless as the Transalp though.

I picked up a 2005 Piaggio X9 500 a few months ago. Came with a Givi carry case. I've replaced some fluids, oil filter, etc. It's got some fairing damage that I've been wanting to fix, but I've been unsure what to use. Most of the damage is just some top-layer chipping of the plastic. There's a few broken-off parts towards the front that I've kept for when I can repair it completely. Got a spare indicator switch coming in the mail too, since mine is a little nutty.

I'm probably making it sound really bad, but it runs rather well, and I've been having fun on it. Just need to do some fairing repairs and replace that switch when it comes in.

More like back in one piece, amirite?
Seriously though, it's given me no trouble that I didn't deserve. I broke the clutch by dropping it twice on one side, first one fucked up the bark buster, so I put it in my pack, then put my foot down in some mud that was way deep and it landed on the now vulnerable clutch lever. New lever, new master cylinder seals.

>>14883951
Then when I got this (loud AF) exhaust this happened to the OEM rear indicator
>pic 100% related

>>14883941

>>
>>14883881
You may want to shy away from the XT if you're that tall, or at least take a test ride. It's already a very heavy bike without a lot of power, with someone your size on it it'd probably have a hard time getting out of it's own way.
>>
>>14883970
I think they are aftermarket?

I found them in my garage (which I inherited off my old man, along with contents) and he's never owned a suzuki afaik. (certainly not in the last 30 years)

They are designed for a fairing mount though. everything turned out better than I expected, and they are less likely to snag on shit now.
>>

I was used to really old, light bikes before I got my Piaggio. This thing is 213kg. Light for a maxi scooter, though. It's not a big deal for me, besides backing out of tight corners.
That's how I got a chip in my front fairing. I wasn't even riding it.
How expensive was the exhaust? Some of those aftermarket pieces can be really expensive.

Practice more. You just need a quick ~1k rpm rev, anon not a half throttle rev. Or you can do it the lazy way and hold in the clutch, click down a gear when you meet the speed requirements, keep clicking down till you get to first at a stop.

I was under the impression you were doing something illegal and evaded detection by policemen with a warrant who'd fine you or something. I may have read that incorrectly.

I was confused why an aftermarket exhaust would be illegal, unless it made really loud noises, but figured (the above) when I mis-read your text.

>>
>>14884196
Hehe, sorry. Weird NZ vocabulary. Yes, the exhaust is too loud to be street legal (bike shop doesn't really care about that sort of thing usually, but I wasn't gonna take chances)

And when I say warrant, I mean people in NZ need a Drivers License, their vehicle needs to have a CURRENT Registration, AND (and this is the kicker, usually) a Warrant of Fitness.

This means every year (or every 6 months for older vehicles) you need to pay some fags your hard earned dollarydoos to check off a list consisting of dumb shit like headlight, tail light, indicators, horn, brakes etc

The checks are very cursory, and really don't speak for the road-worthiness of the vehicle. AND they will nail you for any possible thing they can (my ute failed a WoF once because the headlights were like 1" too low at 5m, there is a simple adjustment screw to change the angle, but no. I have to do that and then apply for another check. Fucking fags)

DISCLAIMER: There are (and have never been) any warrants for my arrest.
>>
>>14884237
Sounds like a pain. At least you're having a good time riding, yeah? How are your roads? My immediate area has a lot of dead plant life.

How difficult is it to acquire a Warrant of Fitness?
