Serious question right now:

I pretty much only ride street right now, but I absolutely adore the looks of enduro bikes. Would buying a full on enduro like a KTM 690 Enduro or a Yamaha XT660R just be a waste and suck on the street, or are they viable options for riding longer tours, and also some commuting?

dual sports themselves are tradeoffs, and are considered jacks of all trades but masters of none. in other words, they kinda suck on road and kinda suck off road.
doing any kind of prolonged street riding would probably be very poor on those bikes probably even with a supermoto conversion. the gearing and aero are not really suited for it. plus the maintenance would be much more frequent riding it on street due to putting miles on more quickly.
i'd say swap out some wheels and change sprocket when you go street. it wont be terrible that way, but without any changes, they will be pretty bad at it.

That's nice, but it typically takes multiple tries to get those right. Often even identical bikes can require different things to run properly. And lots of bikes require removing the seat and tank to wedge the carb through a really tight gap.

With EFI you can generally stick with the stock tune unless you start to remove restrictive parts. Often you will be able to find maps already made for an opened up bike. EFI also measures itself and self adjusts.

I must comment though, if you don't know how to ride a motorcycle, you might want to spare yourself the cost of buying new. Learning to shift on a motorcycle, especially during its break in period can be abusive to the bike. This is not just about the transmission, but also messing with the computer as it dials itself in while you learn to rev match.

My experience of buying a thrashed bike and learning on that for 10 months saved me money, and after I was confident and competent, I went and bought new.

Do what you think is right for you, but you can get a clean pre-gen Ninja 250 or Ninja 500 for under $2500 easily, that is half of the asking value of a Dealer new Ninja 300, before the fees are taken into account.

Please, do all us other motorcyclists a favor and find a couple days to take the MSF course or your countries equivalent. Learning on your own is a good way to fuck yourself up. If your are to petulant to do that, at least watch Twist of the Wrist on Youtube.

its all about learning your bike too, for my XR at sealevel its happy with a 60-160 jetting and it works good up to about 5k feet, a 57-155 covers 0-7000 fairly well but i havent gone higher than that yet. i like rich jetting to help avoid over heating since all i have is air cooling.

My helmet is an HJC CL-17, and it's DOT and Snell certified. I thought as long as it's certified then the rest is mainly extra features for comfort, comms, etc.? that's the best the best. My friend has one, did an europe tour with it and will do again this year. Also in Finland we see many of those in trackdays for some reason. Its been very reliable if maintained properly. Teh carb'd one is smooth as silk also. It's very fun to ride but i'd advise against getting foot down MX style unless you are a pro....
Alternatives include the Duc. Hypermotard and Apr. Dorsoduro, similar power and weight.
