Not, it would be my DD, but I could always just drive my brothers car if I need practicality, so it's not that big a deal!

The E36 is better in almost every aspect but cost. It will go down to which kind of car you like the most OP, they are very different cars.

Get a miata. Cheaper car, cheaper to modify, can outtrack a stock e36 M3 for half the money .

Either way I'd be working on the car myself, so it's more just cost of parts.

And just to add, I've driven both a bit, and can't make up my mind, hence why I need your help!

How much more more or less unreliable would a a E36 M3 be over a Turbo Miata? I'd like a E36 as a second car but fuck if the problems from it being 20 years old and German aren't scaring me. They're already old enough any example could need diff rebuilds, headgaskets, transmission detents changed, etc. aside from stupid oil leaks.

If you are going to strip it, get rid of all the confort and go full race car the Miata will be better as it is cheaper and more reliable and it is already uncomfortable stock. If you want a more practical daily and do some simple mods to have fun occasionally then i'd say go for the e36.

That is incorrect. Pretty much the only thing BMW has going for it is the engine and that is more practical. Miata is cheaper to own and maintain, lighter, has double wishbone suspension and handles better especially if you install a rollbar.

Except the E36 is stiffer, more powerful, and requires far less work to perform at a high-enough level (at least the M3s, maintenance aside just coilovers, swaybars, wheels and tires, and simple bolt ons) that's comparable to a modern car without much compromises in comfort/livability.

If it is going to be tour daily go for de E36 no boubt. The 318IS may be to slow i would go for a 325 or a 323. The handling is almlost as good as a miata but more powerful and much more practical for daily use. Some suspension work and you've got a pretty fin car.

Then go for it OP! I've owned multiple E36's through out my life from a 318is to an M3 321hp (Spainfag) and if you treat them well they are amazing drivers cars. If you get a well mantained unit (which is hard this days) you will hace fin for years to come.>>14654639

Have you compared it to any Japanese sports cars? How does it compare? US M3 (same as Euro 321hp M3....except with 240hp and solid rotors) vs 350Z and AP1 S2000 especially.

I've never driven the US spec, but i've owned the 286hp EUR version and i think it has a better powerband compared to the japanese cars i've driven. More torque, more power through all the rpm (at leats that is what i've felt). Handling wise the M3 was one of them best handling cars of its time so...

The E36 has a better engine, far more comfortable interior (not saying much since miatas have garbage interiors) and in my opinion feels better to drive. The miata is a good car, but it's still Japanese.
