Too bad these things costs more than most of the shitboxes people on /o/ owns.

I wouldn't mind getting into RC cars, it looks fun doing them up and modifying them and stuff. But I dunno if I would ever go race them, and i think drifting around parking lots would end up getting boring after a while.

I was at one point in time. And getting to know the area of the city I'm in I found a RC hobby shop a few blocks from my house.

Might check it out and start up again.
>>

do they not include inner chassis covers anymore to protect the drive gears/shaft/belt ?

my old HPI RS4 had an under tray with top that totally enclosed the electronics and drive belts to protect it from dirt/mud/stones

I had a lot of RC cars, usually got a new one every 3 years or so to keep up with what was being raced. The 1/18th onroad was really popular here
>>
One of my colleagues is very into RC cars.
He went into national championships and spends way too much money on those cars.

They are amazing little machines tho, the ones that are made to be competitive are as customizable as real race cars.
Camber, caster, ride height, kingpin, ackerman, fast and slow damping, weight bias, spring rates, tire compounds and additives to put on tires (which are accepted in competitions apparently), extensive engine tuning, extensive customisation of the way servos work, respond and filter your inputs. There is almost nothing that cannot be set up as you like, they even have fucking pit stops during races.

It's amazing to look at them racing, but as many hobbies it can be a money pit when taken seriously.
>>
>>14038868
still 100 times cheaper than real car racing.
>>
>>14038880
Oh well that's for sure.
Still pretty expensive tho, I've heard people racing RC cars in world championships spend the better part of $100k for each season on those things. Those are levels where you start having to deal with sponsorships and legit teams to even have an hope of being competitive.

I have a Tamiya Frog, love the little thing but always forget i have it. I like the classic ones more than the new ones.
>>
>>14035558

R/C cars are hella cool to a point. If you've spent more than a grand on one, then you're moving into the territory where you could have bought yourself a real motorcycle which is infinitely cooler and more fun than a toy car.
>>
>>14040624
i have both and get much more joy out of the R/C cars than either my vtwin or thumper bikes.

Who cares if you look like a child playing with a toy car if it makes you happy?
>>
I was thinking of getting one for drifting while I wait on funds for a real drift car.
not sure how smooth of a surface you need though for it to drive smooth
>>
>>14040673
Theyre pretty much ok on anything without gigantic cracks or potholes.
>>14040624
1200 bucks gets you a beat to shit dirtbike or a 1/5 scale (like 3 feet long) gas-powered rc.
>>

>>
>>14040695

>>
>>14035745
Sounds like crawling is for you. No need for a track or even a lot of space to have fun. You can take it to any old outdoor area or just make obstacles out of furniture and shit inside.
What's more is the potential for modification is nearly endless.
>>14038970 This guy has the right idea.
Is that an SCX10?
>>
I've wanted to build a Mugen E-Truggy, MBX7?, but $1200 for a RC car is a bit much right now.
>>
What brands should I be looking at if I wanted to get into this? How cheap is too cheap for a first car? Checked Hobbytown's website since there are a couple near me and they have a couple 1/10 scales under $300 that I think look neat.

Also I don't want motorcycle, or even fast 1:1 car.

I want to play with RC cars.

from what I read they are good and sturdy but something of a money pit in hop ups to make them handle well
the main benefit is that lots of people have them so spares are easy to come by
>>
>>14041857

Anything Tamiya is great, any of the TT0 (something) series 1/10's are perfect beginners cars all with mountains of upgrade parts available for when you break shit.

Pro tips, buy a 4000mah 7.2v Nimh battery, buy a alloy drive shaft and read up on how to shim the slack out of the front end.

Done, thats it.
>>
>>14041857
>>14042185
>>14042204

I have TT-01E, it's good as baginner car, but nothing more. If you wan't more don't buy hop-ups, just save to buy better chassis.
>>
>>14042217

Depends on what he/she wants to do with it, want to just drift, a TT01ED is perfect with those few hopups
>>
>>14042223
As far as I know TT-01 even ED are too heavy, too much mass is located on front and rear and too much slack all around.
It's good as rally car, thanks to covered diffs and sturdy gears.
>>
>>14042238

I've got a TT01ED and the only major difference is its factory roller bearings instead of the bush type plastic shit. So the weight difference is well worth it, mostly because when the bush bearings flog out (and they will) they will get replaced with roller bearings anyway. So a little more weight for MUCH better overall rolling efficiency

That and 'drift' style wheels out the box.
>>
>>14042260
I mean that TT-01 is heavy in general. I have TT-01E and Space-R S2, and TT is heavy as fuck.
It's a tank, not a racer.

It's great for beginner, but not worth upgrading. Instead of hop-ups better save for better chassis.
>>

they have very much same bell crank steering arrangement
and some of the problem is solved by adding extra baffles and grommets
even a little bit of paper over the lash inspection hatch helps extend gear life
I no longer drive in rain but sometimes there are puddles
>>
>>14042310
I plan to convert mine for Rally, more clearance, innerbody to protect against stones, some rally tires.
Little personal project for fun and to dump some money on.

Too bad no one RC Rally in my city...

I had a TTG Frog and a DF03 buggy a few years ago, but the Frog succumbed to the massive thrashing I gave it and the DF03 was driven full speed into a parked car by a friend and destroyed it's front suspension. The DF03 also liked to suck down batteries, while the Frog would go all day with RWD.

I didn't have the money to repair either, sadly, even though all the Frog needed were new wheels.

I used to be pretty heavy into drifting them.
Started with a TT-01 (full original spec, yee) and i think i've still got a team magic carbon fibre racing chassis sitting around somewhere with an expensive-ass dead brushless setup.
Was expensive but not ridiculously so.

Pic related, think this is what i've got.

So who else tried to take a camera to their RC only to find out that they're actually the roughest, bumpiest rides anyone has ever imagined?
>>
>>14045330
I'd say it's definitely worth it.
Also, there is a free to play version now.
You only get the spec versions of cars, though.
The adapter to use it with your real remote costs like 12€, shipping included. Keyboard and regular controllers work too, though.

>>
>>14045514
Losi made the best chassis for drifting back in the early days
>>
>>14045528
The 4x4s can be money pits, you're better off with a 2wd.

>Vxl-3S ESC a shit
>motor is too small for car, burns out
>breaks CV shafts like no tomorrow when you upgrade to a 4-pole
>upgrade to tekno driveshafts
And then you've sunk all that money into it and you still have the shit stock tires, stock servo, etc. 2wd is fine for most stuff, RPM front bumper, mg servo and ditch the servo saver, different tires, aluminum shock caps and ti-ni coated shafts and you're golden.
>>14045514
Losi and Associated are fighting constantly. Lodi revolutionized electric 1/10 with the 22 chassis, lot of nifty shit, associated stuck with the b4 for a long time, I think it's b5 or even b6 now.

You guys seen this thing? Huge and seemingly innovative while not too overpriced. not sure if want..
Slash 4x4 is one of the most popular all around trucks for good reason, I haven't had to replace anything but shafts and spur gears since I got it 2 years ago. My old rustler took lots of modding and wizardry to be reliable but god damn is it a monster with the right mix of RPM plastic and aluminum. hick town cops thought it was awesome and gunned it at 90mph.
It's winter now, I use 2.2 ripsaws on the slash and it is hilariously effective. put 'em on a 2wd stampede and it'll wheelie on ice. The rooster tails are heavenly

>>
>>14049724
/toy/ has barely any RC users, though. I've tried starting threads there.

/o/ more likely has more people interested in terrestrial RC.

>>14049821
>>14049851
Yeah, your average competition-grade 2wd RC buggy or short course truck will cost you around a grand in total, all things considered.

Easily into two or three grand for 1/8

This isn't taking maintenance into account.

Even more for Nitro RC.
>>
>>14049985
Isn't nitro cheaper than brushless overall?
Good motors and ESCs are expensive as fuck, as are decent batteries and chargers.
>>
>>14050080
Not sure, I've seen some $300+ high end nitro engines alone, excluding fuel lines/resevoirs/the second servo you need for Nitro.

Also as a general tip to the drivers here, never buy Maxamps.

They're average batteries overall that went through the trouble of fighting to bring down a pretty thorough review on them because the conclusion was that they're overpriced.

If you buy big-name brands electric gets expensive fast, but if you're smart you go to hobbypartz.com or hobby king or wherever and buy cheap batteries and motors that are literally just as good.
