Harleys are shit. They won't last, 99% of Harely riders are fair weather 2 weekend a month posers who throw on their worthless leather vest and pretend like they aren't 50 year old deadbeats.

The V-Strom is a nice bike. Its more road/touring oriented than dirt oriented for an adventure bike, but its a comfy ride, and won't let you down.

There are tons of standards out there, very well priced, comfortable, easy to handle. A used standard with some crash bars and frame sliders would probably be best for your first bike. The neutral riding position, and mid range power/handling lets you build a solid foundation for transitioning to pretty much any other bike of bike later on.

Ultimately it comes down to what you like. People buy what they think looks cool and disregard any flaws most of the time.
