hey, /dat/ is having an argument, do scooters handle better than full motorbikes in urban environments? somebody is claiming that motorbikes handle better, but isn't being specific except that turning circle has nothing to do with handling...
>>13971936
I dig these headlights. Is it a vfr400? I heard it has this queer engine setup and nasty-sounding engine.
>>13972010
They handle about the same, its about the size of the scooter or bike that really makes the difference
>>13971985
Have fun
Squid gang
>>13972017

>>13972010
impossible to say.
Even motorcycles handle different, there is no motorcycle versus scooters. there is motorcycle vs other motorcycle vs scooter vs other scooter
tl;dr depends on what scooter and motorcycle you compare
>>13972021
>>13972016
He also claimed that scooters can't filter and filtering is an important safety maneuver, i may have been baited. or this guy is a nut
>>13972025
I don't even like scooters but this guy is full of shit.

Although it shares headlights with the VFR400, Thats a MC22 CBR250RR. Inline 4 250cc with a redline of 19,000rpm and rev limit of around 20,000rpm. Fun as fuck to ride because you sound like a F1 car going sanic but you're only going 60km/h

>>13972010
You can't compare the two categories, especially now that the lines are blurring.
You can only compare on a model 's model basis.
Turning circle is relevant because it tells you how sharp it can turn when doing maneuvers such as a U turn.
Some bikes/scooters can do one in the width of a street while others may need to do a 3 point turn.
>>13972010
I never road a scoot but supermoto/enduro is GOAT for local riding.
>>13972010
The scooter guy actually implied turning circles was what made handling. The other guy was saying turning circle isn't the only contributing factor. He then gave a relatively detailed explanation which the scooter guy ignored.
>>13972029
The post about filtering was mine. I was saying that while it can filter, it's going to be more dangerous due to the lack of power if the traffic starts moving and when you've gotta take off.
Long story short, scooter guy is misquoting the people that disagree with him.
>>13972005
is this specifically for bikes? how does it compare to a HANS device?
>pic related
>>13972025
>i may have been baited. or this guy is a nut
uh filtering is a safety maneuver small profile bikes like dirt bikes and scooters get rear ended by cars sitting in traffic all the time way safer not to be there at all
>>13972097
Let me put it this way
if you take a supermoto/enduro. give it road tyres, and lower it. you'll have something that can turn almost as sharply as a scooter.
of course dirt bikes can also hop around on things, take far rougher terrain, ect. so can be a lot better for urban exploration especially in really shitty cities. scooters are good for one thing and one thing only. Urban usage at subhighway speeds. Taking one on the highway is like taking a cruiser into the city. Doable, but not the best idea. they can get to 100kph but without the headroom you need to do it safely without at least 200cc of scooter power at the bare minimum.
>>13972105

I got the engine running on my old CBR250RR again about a month ago now. A car cleaned it up in August and smashed the shit out of it.
Engine turns over on it's own now, but it hasn't gone for a ride yet (no brakes and bent forks/handlebars). Once I finish the rebuild I'm going to give it to my little brother. He'll be old enough to get his learners permit next year.

Take something like a CT110 and you could almost do it without moving.
>>13972103
>while it can filter, it's going to be more dangerous due to the lack of power if the traffic starts moving and when you've gotta take off.
Na m8, traffic will not all of the sudden rip a hole shot and drag race to the next light.
Even a low powered bike/ scoot will be fine.
>>13972127
>Na m8, traffic will not all of the sudden rip a hole shot and drag race to the next light.
This happens all the time. When I filter to the front I almost always block the car. It's very common in this city for drivers to decide they're going to get in front of you at the lights and try to launch it.
This has happened in every place I've ridden at least once.

The HANS device protects the base of the skull from fracture. When your body is rapidly decelerating it gets held back by the belts while your head and neck get super extended and can kill you instantly when the base of the skull breaks because your brain stem is right there.
The HANS has straps that hold onto your helmet to hold it your head back from whipping forward.
The other brace protects from a different kind of injury.
iirc it protects the neck from breaking when you fall off your bike on your head. So iirc stops your neck from being crushed accordion style.
>>13972143
Roger m80. I was the guy saying filtering is unsafe on (small) scooters. Like I said, I'm not attacking you, mainly saying to be safe.
Riding is dangerous enough, and scooters do lack some of the key things that help motorcyclists stay alive.
>>13972122
Silly nips trying to ride a sumo like it's a sportbike. Would be interesting to see some of the European sumo riders have a go at gymkhana.
Since googling it mostly leads to erotica I'm asking here: what's prolonged travel like on a naked bike?
I'm nobike (in during get out) but next season I'm looking to buy some wheels and while 99% of riding would be in the city, I want to travel a little in the summer. I understand fairings exist for a reason. Would I be better off buying something with fairings?
>>13972148
Damn, my post was sloppy. Time for sleep.
>>13972153
It's pretty incredible though isn't it. I could do most of that on a CT, but some people are doing it on fucking Harleys and other huge bikes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjA4MWqKbmU
>>13972154
How far you talking? I don't have a lot of time in nakeds, but I imagine if you threw a decent windshield on it and had gearing that wasn't too low it'd be fine.
>>13972157
travel fag here, about 3 weeks in the Balkans, not sure about distance due to mountain passes but so far gas money budget is operating at a max of 4500km.
>>13972154
Better than sport bikes because of the more upright seating position but you'll still find your butt and back get sore on extended periods.
Also you might take a beating from the wind if you don't have a big enough windshield, so sport bikes have an advantage there. Easy to get one though so if you plan on doing it a lot it'll be worth it.
>>13972150
>scooters do lack some of the key things that help motorcyclists stay alive.
Like what tho?
>>13972154
Not having a windshield and a set of fairings mean that you are going to get wind buffeted on the highway which will tire you out faster.
So if you plan on taking a long trip at highway speeds maybe you can put on a removable windshield or be prepared to stop and rest.
>>13972167
That's a decent run, not really sure what to tell you, I've done long hours but usually not real far. I imagine a naked with a windshield wouldn't be too bad though.
>>13972170
>Like what tho?
Acceleration, braking and stability are the big three. Everyone has given it a bit of gas to escape a close or uncomfortable situation.
>>13972150
never ridden a bike, only ridden the 150 kymco and a 50cc honda today in the tests. the big wheels make a huge difference to stability, i would be very wary on those tiny toy wheels on most scooters. I've only had my bike for about a week, my top box hasn't even arrived off ebay.
>>13972170
yeah, what makes a full bike so safe? is it the added power, manual shifting control? heaver weight? I'll be using bikes for mostly low speed riding
>>13972140
Kek
This my WIP.
>>13972175
So would a 265cc scooter with disk breaks front and back be safe?
my 62 year old dad hopped on my kymco and rode it around without any problem, and i've found scooter really easy to ride, are bikes even easier?
>>13972181
Nice scoots m8
>>13972178
>the big wheels make a huge difference to stability
I'm sure they do, but it's a mix of things. Unless you're riding something particularly light motorcycles generally feel planted. It's hard to explain, but ride a few examples of both and you'll understand what I mean.
>yeah, what makes a full bike so safe? is it the added power, manual shifting control? heaver weight? I'll be using bikes for mostly low speed riding
Added power and brakes mainly. That 150cc Kymco looks to have the bare minimum brakes it needs to stop. There are also plenty of situations where having some power can get you out of situations.
Weight can go both ways, but if you do lots of highway travel a bit of extra heft can be appreciated. I was riding home last week and there were some pretty high speed winds. I only felt it when I was sitting at lights. On something like an NBC110 a strong crosswind can pretty much push you into a different lane.
>>13972182
Disc brakes are definitely a step in the right direction. You probably find the scooter easier because it's automatic. On a motorcycle the moment you're moving they're very stable and friendly to ride for the most part.
I'm the same person you were talking to in /dat/ I apologise if my posts came across as aggressive, wasn't my intention. Not all those posts were me however.

>>13972196
i wasn't the person arguing with you, i was playing video games and watching Fringe
I agree on the breaks. rear break slows it down. the front break almost stops it instantly, but i haven't tried that at high speeds
i have found the wind thing true, it's not quite as fun riding against or with a side wind
>>13972210
The brakes are still whimpy compared to a full sized back. I'd say that Kymco really just has adequate brakes if you know what I mean?
The brakes on my bike are fucking ridiculous though.
>i have found the wind thing true, it's not quite as fun riding against or with a side wind
I don't even notice it on that bike, but it was scary at times on my work bike.
We had them setup to carry the extra weight on the back, so when you're heading back to base, down a highway, on a windy day with nothing in the bags, cross winds are your enemy.
Like I said, the whole point I was trying to make it just to be safe. If you've been using /dat/ for awhile you probably saw what happened when a car didn't see me.
>>13972208
Better.
Did you loop a wheelie or something?
>>13972156
>>13972148

Seems HANS is specifically for seatbelted drivers, while the neck brace is for riders who have separated from their steed.

The neck braces are purpose designed for motorcycle riders, they aim to prevent cervical fractures in the neck from side to side and front to back hyper extension that may cause paralysis. Basically your helmet hits the plastic and is prevented from moving in any direction to a dangerous degree.
Only downside is that they increase the odds of breaking your collar bones. A worthy trade off if you're a racer if you ask me.
Found this blast from the past. Went to get my tires mounted and saw this on the tank of what I believed to be a busa. Yes it's gay, but in the late 90's early 2000s this shit was considered cool as was stretching busa and chroming everything and puting spikes everywhere.
>>13972337

>>13972327
North NJ. Very urban but if I go up to ride near NY then yes I go faster.
>>13972335
But a broken collarbone is already one of the most common injuries from motorcycle racing, and that is without the neck brace. Spinal injuries are much less common.
>>13972341
Never was cool to me, actually it's really stupid. I just was saying that it was big at that time, now the negros have stepped away from that.
>>13972345
Competing harms. One is significantly worse than the other. I'll take broken collar bones all day long so long as it heals and I can still walk.
A quadriplegic with perfectly pristine collar bones really isn't going to count his blessings.

Older ones have. I'm very uncultured regarding this. Not sure when the change came about, but all vehicles before 2000 or something along that date have initials on their plates (M for Madrid, SV for Segovia, IB for Illes Balears and so forth) that indicate where the vehicle was registered.
Now we just have the country letter (E) plus digits and letters, none of which are related to where the vehicle was registered.

My dad has been riding motorcycles for over 40 years and still rides regularly. I want to get him something motorcycle related for Christmas.
What's some cool motorcycle accessory that I could buy him for around $50 (absolutely no more than $100 tops if it's really good) that you think he's likely not aware of? Something new that you use while riding or on your bike that is really cool. He already has a GoPro, so that isn't an option. I'm just trying to think of something unique. By hanging off of the bike you're giving the bike less lean angle and therefor allowing you to go faster around corners. Putting your foot out increases the lean angle of the bike itself because you're not shifting your center of gravity further into the turn.

What's up sluts, got my savage the other day, grandfather surprised my by slipping a screaming eagle slashcut on it while I was sleeping, picking up a pair of Harley drag bars off him this weekend, slowly but surely she's getting brought back. Gotta tear her down this coming week and plug an oil leak.

Yeah she was normal hair colors now.
I miss the vastness of the mainland, I know what you mean. The fact that you can pick a direction and just go 300km is a good feeling.
But there's plenty to explore here though. Even if you managed to explore every single road, beach (there's like 300+ of them) and mountain, you still have a ton of dirt roads crisscrossing the entire island. You could get a WR250 and still go crazy on those for a long time.

So I had quite a scare yesterday. Was doing 100kph on freeway when I hear this huge bang, thought my engine blew up or something. I instinctively pull in the clutch and stop on the side. Turns out my fucking chain snapped! I count myself hella lucky that it didn't catch on the real wheel..
Worst thing is though I have no one but myself to blame. I had installed a new chain about a week ago. I have no idea what I fucked up though, I have changed chain myself before without problems and I made sure the plate on connecting link was seated flush against the adjacent links.

Lean angle isn't a concern for supermotos. They're so narrow and lightweight that the tyres still grip just fine at extreme lean angles.
Racers stick their foot out because a) it keeps the front end more planted, b) there's no space for their feet when they're leaned over that far and c) because it's faster to transition when they're "counter-leaning".

When I start up my bike after a cold winter night, a ton of smelly, visible white exhaust comes out of the exhaust pipe. It goes away after a little bit. What does this mean?
Pic related, my "air filter," I'm figuring this has something to do with it?

The causes of white exhaust smoke can vary; however, it is common to see white exhaust smoke when first starting a bike, especially on cooler days. This is generally steam caused by condensation
