Winter beater Bianchi Bobcat. I pulled the frame off a trash pile a couple years back and built it with parts I had hanging around. Only spent $5 on replacement bottom bracket bearings.

in the land of the best government that money can buy there are subsidies for turning corn into high fructose corn syrup - food companies make more profits selling junk foods and sodas than fruits, vegetables, fish, lean meats, etc.. the US food and drug administration protect the industry and not the people.

This poor thing I picked up for free from a Co-op by donating a few hours of work fixing bikes. It's too small for me (49cm) so I'll be restoring it for the female unit. This one will be all original with date stamped Campi parts. Right now I'm in the process of having the frame bead blasted and painted. Pic related is current frame, following pic is what she'll look like.

I'm really stuck on whether I should get a Camber or an Epic now that I work for a Spec. dealer - how do you like your bike?
>>
>>938530
Loving it so far! I had the Camber Expert Evo last year (I work at a dealer too) and the new design is a noticeable improvement.

The biggest thing I've noticed are the shorter chainstays. It's ridiculously easy to manual!

The Epic is great too. However, it's first and foremost an XC race bike. I'd only ever choose an Epic over an equivalent Camber if I was focused exclusively on that.

The Camber is a much better all rounder for most riders imo.

Lastly, I've yet to ride the Expert/S-Works level Cambers this year, but I'm not the largest fan of the Brain for general riding... Even with the "improvements" they've made this year... That's the main reason I'm upgrading a Comp Carbon rather than going with an Expert Carbon.

I wash my ride every other week or so, only takes 20 min.

Get some power green de-greaser and afterwards a little spray wax will keep your paint from fading to shit.

It should not fade in a year anyway, that sounds bogus, what manufacturer was it?

He said about 30km/h and nearly 40km/h, 10km is 6.2 miles so the actual increase is probably more like 5mph. It's not unbelievable that two bikes could result in a speed difference of that much, I can do about 18mph on a 40lb mountain bike on the flat and I could definitely get a light ass road bike over 23mph (bear in mind I made my previous post before he posted his old bike).

Nice. 70's road bikes always look thinner than 80's road bike for some reason. Who manufactured it?

Here's my 1994 Schwinn Passage I got almost a month ago while I was still in a sling for a broken collarbone. Replaced the stem, brake pads, and bar tape so far. The gumwalls on it right now don't look great but they still feel pretty grippy and don't have an rips so they'll be fine temporarily. I REALLY need to change out the saddle though; I'm currently using the saddle off my other bike whenever I ride it.

Paramount lust is really a modern invention. Paramounts used to just be Schwinns that were made to the quality of a European brand. This is especially true of the Japanese Paramounts. It used to be if you wanted a top quality frame, it came from Europe, if you wanted a frame that wasn't from Europe you got a Paramount. That changed with the Japanese bikes, which made bikes just as good for less, and now everyone is used to buying Taiwanese and Chinese crap that frames made in the first world have some kind of mystique. Paramounts never carried that prestige back then. Paramounts are only valued because Waterford exists.

geo is most stable i've ridden. not as quick underfoot as my Diamondback Prevail (tange prestige vs. tange 2? slightly longer wheelbase/rear triangle? flexy, heavy 36h wheels?) or the CAAD4. It rides comfortably over choppy roads even with 23mm rubber. The drops feel a little too deep and my hands are used to more modern/ergo hoods. The gearing is a little steep for the biggest hills (42 x 26).

All that said, I don't think I will ever sell this bike, considering how well it rides, and also having gotten it "complete" ie full suntour superbe group.

Anyway, if you have another chance to pick one up, I think three-fifty would be a good price to offer for a Lotus

I've never seen the point of it either really. Although I've never felt the need to use lockout if I did it wouldn't be in a situation where I couldn't stop riding or even quickly reach down and flip a lever.

Remotes for droppers I can understand, they're used much more frequently and it's better to have both hands on the bars when moving your arse to adjust the height. My dropper doesn't have a remote and I mostly used to adjust it whilst stopped, basically just a more convenient alternative to a quick release seatpost clamp.
>>
>>939381
I hardly use it either, with such a good suspension platform there's no need

hey, fellow tallbro. sweet bike but trim that rear brake housing jesus.

also, I get how you matched your sidewalls to frame in rear and to headtube, stem, and tape in front, but it's a failed experiment. Red sidewalls always look terrible, and just one draws more attention. Both whitewall/grey/whatever the front one is would look a lot better when you eventually replace, IMO.
>>
>>939492
I put electrical tape/vinyl wrap over the Shimano components and put Trek frame protector stickers over that. From 5 feet away, it looks "stock" rather than visually apparent that logos were covered. I pretend it goofs some riders on group rides that try to see what components I have, but aren't savvy enough to recognize without the logo.

I have a pair of gold marzocchi bomber forks but they're so saggy and I can't find springs for them. Is the frame worth keeping? I couldn't really find any info on it. It is 7005 alu and feels pretty light. All I've really done is tune it up, new tires and a chain. The second chain ring is shark toothed to shit, I want to replace it asap.

Filename matches bar angle. Seriously, sort that shit out. Buy a bar that fits you if you have to.
>>
>>939616
>Is the frame worth keeping?
I don't see why not. It looks quite cheap with those dropouts and fixed derailer hanger but it's adequate, I just like it because of the paint job.
>>
>>939633
So it wouldn't make sense to buy a smaller steel frame that fits better if it's not cheaper than what I paid for the bike. The frame is like an inch or two bigger than what I should be on but it's rideable as is
>>
>>939640
If the parts on that are in as good condition as they look (i.e. the wheels aren't buckled, the fork isn't shot, none of the bearings need replacing) then $100 for those to put on a different frame isn't a bad deal. It wouldn't be so terrible to spend more than that on a new frame if it's one that's worth it, but then such a frame really deserves better components.

I'd say get the cheap aluminium frame you can find in the right size that's not beat to fuck (steel isn't worth bothering with) as it's not going to be any worse than that one, I'd imagine you could probably pick one up for like $50.

I don't understand what's going on with the housing. I pull it forward so that there's a fair amount up front and not too much in the back but over use it pulls itself back like that. I assume it has to do with the cable itself catching the housing or whatever.

And as for the tires it was actually never intentional but just practical. I had two white tires, but when it came time to replace one of them the red ones were on sale so I bought one of those instead. Provided there's not a big price differential again I'm gonna go with a replacement white tire next time.

Sucks being a tallbro tho. Fucking finding used frames and shit

The "wood" would be some sort of foam, to stop the fork from hitting the frame if you didn't already know. The "tensioner" and "ehh" bits look like they're chainguard mounts, not too unusual on kid's bikes. As for the frame design there's probably no practical reason it was made that way, it's just supposed to look cool.

I'm not that poster but treks are great bikes. There are only 3 bike shops in my city and the one that sells treks is by far the best in terms of products and employees.

Yes. Yes, I do. It looks incredibly gaudy and ruins the impression of an otherwise good-looking bike. There is absolutely no reason to prins TREK or Cannondale (most common offenders) or whatever multiple times on every angle of the bike.

>Rides like a motherfucking rocket.

I'll assume you mean downhill. skiing gets more expensive all the time. gotta buy a special summertime ski these days.
>>
>>940254
I know he doesn't specify the exact gear ratio but you could at least use some common sense. That chainring is 32t at the smallest and single speed hubs typically range from like 9t to 16t.

Even if you were confused by how the chain tensioner pushes on the lower chain run to make it look like it had a larger cog on the rear you can see that it doesn't stick out from behind the dropout.
>>
>>940254
Man, it's not really 1:1. The tensioner makes it look funny, but the rear cog is kind of small. Don't really remember how many teeth though. The max speed is about 35km/h, until you can no longer spin the cranks, but for the city, that's great. Gives me trouble downhill though, can't go fast enough.
But the rocket part meant my obsession with jumping on and off stuff, taking some wicked paths to avoid people and cars, riding down stairs, dropping off everything. Just having fun and riding through every obstacle.
Not calling myself a freerider, or a dirt jumper, but I just love riding the way I ride, not caring about the "true" meaning of urban freeride, or other things like that.

>There is absolutely no reason to prins TREK or Cannondale (most common offenders) or whatever multiple times on every angle of the bike.
There is for team bikes. You know, the people that can actually ride a bike and ride it fast? Having a company name or logo easily visible on a race bike or kit is how it is and how has always been. Even Merckx had large MOLTENIs written on his jersey, shorts, and cycling cap.
Then there are the people that like to buy bikes that look like the race bikes, so manufacturers offer some models with paint schemes that are replicas of their team bikes or at least share similar styling or design elements.

I find it easy to understand why you aren't a fan of visually busy racing designs or styling, but you must be very dense to have no idea why some people don't get so damn worked up about it and just enjoy the colors or why some people find it appealing.

You can even buy a nice Trek and dress it up in whatever "good-looking" colors you want from the factory with ProjectOne
>>

Fat and unhealthy faggot here so gimmie a break. I am going to try and make an effort to lose some weight/get fitter.

Got this from Halfords (No don't laugh). Seems a nice bike. Not ridden much before really. I can't understand the gears for shit (well I can but this whole using the middle chain rings for middle gears and big chain ring at front small at back etc for smaller gears to avoid putting strain on the derailleur just gives me a headache. When trying to actually get in a gear that is right for my ability I get all muddled).

I changed the seat for some cheap saddle I got from Lidl made by Medicus. Yeah I know a little about those other saddles (Brooks etc) but it seems comfy enough for now. I've only done a little local riding for the moment as I am waiting on a decent hand pump to be delivered and don't want to get caught out miles from anywhere yet. I will probably get some Marathon Plus tires later on if punctures become too much of an issue but for now I need to 'toughen up' because I am fat and unfit.

I got a bike bracket and screwed it to the wall to hang the bike off the pedal. Not sure how clever that is but I don't have much room and live on the third floor of an apartment.

I also changed the front stem to raise the handlebars up and towards me. I am trying to find a comfortable riding position but am still experimenting with that. At first my legs were locking out but now I am not locking out enough so raised the seat a bit for the next time I go out. I've mostly been just getting essential accessories and tools and acting like a faggot about the weather. Oh and I also got a Saris Solo (bit flimsy) for taking it outside my shitty urban landscape (London burbs).

I'm not confident riding in traffic right now. I wobble and get out of breath too much.

My biggest issue is the strain on my wrists and forearms. I get some pain and am wondering if it's my position or if I just need to get some muscle tone or something. Maybe get some wrist supports?

Start by raising your saddle. A lot. If you can't the bike is much too big for you. Either could explain your discomfort.

I've done a couple of adjustments just sitting on the bike against the wall. I used some guides on basic bike fitting. I will try the plumb line later but from what I can tell my heel locks out right now and after moving my seat slightly forwards my knee looks like it lines up right with the end of the crank shaft (but plumb line will verify that when I get around to it). I am also not sure if I have the stem raised too far back for my back but that will have to wait for some actual riding to see.

I'm pretty sure the frame looks like that because it originally accommodated rear suspension, but the Chinese factory ran out of springs that week so they just welded pieces of steel to the frame to fit the definition of a bicycle.
I see this all the time in Brooklyn. They are often ridden by old Chinese guys who probably got the absolute cheapest bike possible
>>
>>940376
Doubtful, to fit suspension to that frame would require many modifications, basically an entirely new rear end, pivot for the rear end, and a shock mount on the front triangle. The work needed to make all those modifications wouldn't justify using a frame that originally added suspension, and putting a more traditional seat tube on it wouldn't be much more work.

It's just meant to look neat to little kids, like a big boys full susser from 10 feet away.

>>

Nothing wrong here. Flat is fine but a well setup dropper is amazing. The benefit from added positioning and ability to hammer away on the drop while railing the roads and pathways makes it well worth the investment.
>>

>>
>>940319

Possibly this >>940323

Saddle height should be adjusted to allow for your legs to become extended roughly 80%, leaving a slight bend. Once that's adjusted, you should try and position your handbars so that they are slightly below your saddle in order to achieve a good riding position. If this is uncomfortable, you can keep with what you've done for now but do realize that over time you should try and move towards this positioning in order to keep good form and avoid stressing joints.

Another really important thing to do is position your brakes and shifters properly. A good starting point is roughly 30deg downward but you can toy with this. This will put you in a position where you're less likely to rest your weight on a bent wrist but more so with a slightly bent, natural position with the meat of your palms taking the brunt. If this fixes things for a bit and you notice pain from really long rides, look into picking up some silicon grips or larger, softer grips.

Overall, it's probably just best to realize that you're just starting out and still figuring everything out. Don't be afraid to change things around, try new heights, or even take up a bit of off-saddle training to strengthen problem areas. After a while, you'll love the shit out of riding that thing!
>>
>>940394
I thought a flat bar wouldn't be all that great but ended up really liking it on my own bike.

i'm not a racer or a fitness rider. I commute to and from work and literally everywhere else I need to go. Gets me where I need to go at decent speeds which are around 18-20mph casual goings.

I do live in SLC though so humping up the valley can be a dick at times. Still one of my favorite things to do is be a lazy cunt and take a bus to the top of the foothills and mountain path. Then I just coast down for 5-8 or so miles straight with no stops at fucking all. It's like a cheap ass rollercoaster.

I don't know if that makes me super lazy or what but god is it relaxing.

18-20mph ain't all that fast. It is a nice trek bar and I bike every day about 10 miles. 5 miles to work and 5 miles back. If I have to go anywhere I bike there. So I average 80 or so miles a week? Sometimes around 100 if I do something on the weekends. Almost 5 years now.

I'm not that in shape but man my legs and thighs are rock solid. I could kick like a horse.

gonna add that I have always been a sporty person and played football from middle school all the way into a couple years of college. I also like hiking in the mountains near park city (pic related, my own).

but I'm honestly not pushin it on my bike. Downhill I limit myself to around 30mph because I feel like I'm going to crash and die miserably. There are some hardcore bikers in SLC. There is this old couple that rockets past me all the god damn time. They do that shit going up the god damn mountain roads like it ain't no thang as well. A ride that would destroy me. They have to be at least 65.

Apparently SLC has it's own tour coure path now and the biking scene is growing fast.. It kinda sucks biking here in the winter because the air quality is atrocious. The smog in the winter is choking and there are actually warning telling people to not go outside it get's so bad.
>>

I was just about to start complaining that nobody cares for me and my bike, but hey, you do!
And yes, it is quite heavy - empty, but with all them accessories bolted on it's ca. 17 kilos. It's a "trekking cross" type a bike (so a tourer in non-marketing speak, right?) and the only ""aero"" stuff available is the tilting/adjustable/whatever stem (that I dropped down a bit).
All that being said, this is a rather cheaper bike that I have had 0 (zero) problems with. It might be heavy and slow but it's tough and reliable. Only ever replaced the tyres, grips, chain and cassette, break pads and the fucking mudguards, so the usual stuff. Even the shocks are working and not making any trabbu since day one (and that was in early April 2009, mind you).
Anyway, I was not trying to compare that thing to a road bike or anything, rather than to the fact that that other guy got himself a "fast bike" and, indeed, started going significantly faster. However, I already missed my only opportunity to get a new one (20% off of catalogue price for a _current year_ cyclo cross model bike on shimano 105, sans the crank, and beautiful colour). But whatever.
Cheers.

Depends, if you're talking about flecks of rust on a chromed steel part you can apply some oil-based lube (wd40 is ideal) and scour the rust spots off with steel wool. On a frame things get more complicated because of the paint - if the rust spots are small it can make the most sense just to ignore them unless you live near salt water or are going to abuse your frame by storing it outside/somewhere damp, but the scouring described above will work (just be gentle to avoid removing more paint. For larger spots, and doubly so if the rust is deep enough to cause pitting, you should chemically convert the rust with something like oxalic acid or naval jelly, either of which will stop the rust and provide some short term protection - but if you want a proper long term solution you'll need to repaint the bare steel to protect it from moisture.
>>

It's 24 inches. I'm 6'2, its a little too big for me but just barely. Still fairly comfortable.
>>
>>940631
oh, im 6'3 and ive been looking for a damn 24 inches road bike for months now.
>>
>>939026
Fuck you. I hate this fucking bike. You're abusing that frame. Give it to someone who will stop raping it.
>>
>>940638
Yea when I was looking for vintage bikes in my area all of the bikes were either like 24 in or 19 in.

thoughts on critical fixed gears?
bout to start cycling again and was concidering this

M'lady with her dancin' shoes on ;)

>>939066
Do you really need these huge-ass rotors?
>>
>>940218
Combine with this >>939004 and it will be perfect.
>>

Some of the frames look sleek as fuck, but they definitely aren't high quality.
The componets are also lower quality, but the real concern is the wheelset. At that price, it's almost guaranteed that those wheels won't last a year of semi-serious cycling.
I think bikes direct sells a fixie/SS with a Reynolds frame, but I can't be bothered to look up how much it is. That would probably be a better bet if you plan on riding a lot.

The critical bikes would probably be fine as campus commuters or beer bikes, but I definitely wouldn't become dependant on one.

Swapped the Vittoria gumwalls for some Schwalbe Ones. Was getting punctures on every single ride, they're so soft.

You can't see it in this light but the Schwalbe have blue piping where the sidewall meets the tread.
>>
>>940669
Lose at least 2/3 of the Mercury decals, your bike's frame is busy-looking enough as it is.
>>
>>940319
>I can't understand the gears for shit
just stay in the middle gear at the front all the time until you get used to the back one

make sure you anticipate coming to a stop and downshift your gears appropriately for taking off again
>>
>>940439
>that fucking top tube
just go die, specialized designers.
>>
>>940711
Unless you're a weight weenie or your frame or fork can't fit a larger disc/handle the forces there's little reason to use smaller discs. You've got less heat dissipation and less braking force.
>>
How come nobody rates/critiques anymore?

Beautifull. Pull all but one Mercury off each wheel and it'll be perfect. Or perhaps keep only the stealth logos.

No one was asking how big your frame was.

Not at all, I can appreciate both extravagance and subtlety, but as a student in a tiny apartment I only have room for one bike, so I brought my race bike.

Huh, being the self centred arsehole that I am I had thought he was asking me, obviously didn't check the thumbnail properly.

fucking mint. I know bikes like this aren't popular, but after rocking a shit '87 schwinn cruiser around downtown Chi-town for a few months, I have nothing but good things to say about cozy utility. Baskets too; get a set of the Wald baskets for the back and double your fun. Trust me, if you have a grocery store nearby, you'll love using your bike to pick stuff up. Have fun out there.
>>
>>940908
Thanks dude, I plan min keeping this bike forever
