My current track
>>1038649
>>1039205
>>1039506

Current thing I am working on. Finding out why pick related's drive wheels click when they are moving. Chessie System and Burl Northern doing the clicking. The Illinois Central Gulf would work for the inglenook puzzle but it doesnt seem to have the power to pull cars very well.

Having an issue with the car following the loco derailing, caused by the loco's coupler angle. Works fine on engines where the coupler is part of the wheel set instead of attached to the body.

The loco that would handle this is a 6-6 Burl Northern (size up from picture) but it can't take a 12in radius corner.
>>
>>1039557

Took apart the Chessie System. That gear on the side where the wheel has been removed is loose, causing the noise. Figure ill put it together and run it so I have one to use this weekend. Will have to replace the unit shown in pic, will hit the shop on monday.

Need to open the Burl next to see if its the same thing.
>>
>>1039565

On the Burl the issue was caused because at some point it was probably dropped which popped the gear next to the wheel out of position. It caused wear where it would be spinning and wont stay in position. Will have to replace the thing shown in the previous post on this engine too.

Will probably convert both to DCC while I have them open.
>>
Do you clean out and repack the gears with new grease? If so what kind?

I recall a guy at a model train club I used to belong to in Calgary in the mid 80's who had a trio of HO Athearn SD40-2's beautifully detailed to represent then current CP Rail (one was actually featured in MR Magazine model of the month). What also stood out was that compared to everyone elses his were freakin' quiet & smooth. Everyone assumed he repowered them with Sagami can motors but he said he just cleaned all the stock gunk out and repacked it with grease.

Anyone else do this?
>>
>>1039589

Because I know I will be replacing them I did not bother with grease. Cleaned and used some basic lubricant to see if I could get them working right, but in both cases turned out to be an actual mechanical failure. I plan on getting some good heavy bearing grease and repacking my other engines. All but three of my 20-30 engines have not been run in 20 years with exception of testing for problems and cleaning wheels, as well as trying to get a few workin for my puzzle.

Thanks for bringing up the grease issue, i'll do that and post results sometime later in the week.

Managed to get one of the yard switchers working and did a bunch of puzzle rounds.
>>
>>1039589
I use automotive synthetic wheel bearing & chassis grease, just enough that there's a skim on any surface that needs it. Little bit more running drag than using any kind of light oil but the legit grease stays in there a lot longer (whether the train is used heavy or stored) and it's a lot quieter and smoother.

>>1039594
>Cleaned and used some basic lubricant to see if I could get them working right
I do that with freshly acquired used stuff of questionable quality or condition; once it definitely works properly then I grease it and it's typically good for ages unless it actually breaks somehow.

>>1039551
Thanks or the dump, neat that a station has models about their own history everywhere.
>>
Imma convince y'all why N scale is the best scale.

>takes up less space than HO scale, allowing for more complex layouts
>smallest scale to support DCC
>even smaller scales aren't as commercially supported
>you can easily identify it by placing your thumb on top of the cars, since they're the same size
>the scale and track gauge are nice, round, easy to remember numbers
>British stuff isn't nearly as out of scale; OO stuff looks ridiculous next to HO stuff

etc etc
>>
>>1039828

As a kid I always wanted to do N scale. But now that I am older and inheirated 10+k of HO stuff, pretty sure I am sunk cost HO for life
>>
>>1039828
I wish I had the ability to turn back time & start again with N gauge. Stuck with 00 but I'll manage when I eventually get round to building my layout...

Thanks for the info, I wasn't sure what to use.

>1039835
In the mid-80s N scale looked and ran like crap. Even the N-scalers then told me so. LoL. What I was interested in was only available in HO and I was heavily influenced by what I saw at the local HO scale club and they were a bunch of nice normal guys with a broad spectrum of train interests.

Plus at the time the N-scalers weren't too enthusiastic and rarely met and the O-scale guys were notoriously private and restricted outsiders. So HO it was for me.

That said, N-scale has really improved. I have seen several layouts at various shows and it looks really good.
>>
>>1040068
Love those signals! One of my favourite things to see on layouts, especially if they function realistically.
>>
>>1040138
They do. It's a Digitrax (I know) system for DCC, but the block logic is all handled by JMRI.
2038 and 334 (GP60B) are Athearn blue box units.

468 started as an Athearn Genesis unit and has been extensively over-worked. The unseen Mt. Hood set behind it has been built from scratch.

Now this is a train I can replicate. Aside from it being B&O. Can anyone else replicate this?
>>
>>1040334

Used. Coming from factory would be insane with the whole Rivarossi not making replacement parts thing.

I took it to my local train shop to look at before I proceeded. Had 50 of insurance on it so I wanted to see if it would be worth it to just repair. Told me the last time they got replacement parts was the 80s where a guy bought locos by the case, dismantled, and sold the parts. Pretty sure other than my grandpas I have in the shop I will be staying away from rivarossi.

Seller finally got pissed when I showed him the actual broken pieces and told me that if I am sending it back to do it and stop wasting his time because he has tons of other people who want to buy it.

>>1040347
I really like the looks of those. I have the same looks in a Burlington Northern and a few others. Considering buying one with dcc/sound for my shunting puzzle.
>>
>>1040376
For running gear stuffs look at Northwest Short Line. They have all kinds of repower stuff.

Not sure where to go for details. I have a Rivarossi Big Boy that needs a new roof on the cab, because cats are assholes.

But it runs fine otherwise.

>>1040391
Confirmed foamer here (Proto:87, Proto:48, 1 3/4" scale / 7.5" gauge)

Though I only start foaming over my own stuff. For a "cheap" ready to run, the Athearn GP35's are nice. $99 US retail. Add in a $20 US Digitrax decoder, and you're all set.

See >>1040068 for an example.
>>
>>1039565

Closer look at the hobby shop. Cracked gears, no replacements. Have to go to train swaps.

Gonna try to get some manufactured by 33333DDDDD

Got pic related cleaned up and added some connectors. Good as new. Only a decade+ older than me
>>
>>1040155
What are you using to build it, what is the cost and where can I buy it?
>>
>>1040436

1/8 x 1/8 balsa or basswood. Currently using basswood but I hear it doesnt last as good over time under pressure.

Use a "the chopper" made for doing cuts with this wood easy. Then some superglue for the main joints and some hobby glue for holding the remainder together.

See if I get pictures to work this time. Working on first stages of an iron mine dump. Off to the right will eventually be a mountain with an iron mine. I have some ore cars coming in the mail along with some long couplers to see if I can make magnetic decoupling work.
>>
>>1040869
Nice! Do you plan on adding any more or are you just sticking with that one board?
>>
>>1040896

Yeah. I ran out of 1/8 by 1/8, weather delayed package. Going to do a little more work on this building and then built an intermediate building between tracks, then place the conveyer between the two. Conveyer will be wide enough for some of those fat rubber bands. Going to crazy glue a few end to end. Then build some trusses so that it makes sense.

At some point need to put a road in for the scale semi-truck I have as well.
>>

That's pretty decent! I'm in a bach suite and looking at a shelf type layout for now. I'm thinking 3 modules (for future ease of removal) along one wall that's 15 ft long.

In the meantime the accumulation (hoarding??) of rolling stock continues on a casual basis. I just obtained this tonight for $20 from an estate being liquidated. Already painted and detailed with a decorated interior. Toying with the idea of lighting it up inside at some point.

I'm trying to replicate a Canadian Pacific train that operated in the 1950s after diesel took over from steam. I've got 3 of the 5 cars so far. This is a Rivarossi model and it's 100% accurate for the passenger car pictured, I found a picture of it taken in 1953 on the fallenflags website.
>>
>>1041140

Anyone else here use Kato track? Just in the process of switching my home layout over to it, fucking god-tier system desu compared to messing about with boards, dodgy wiring and worn out Peco track.
>>
>>1039533

lol new haven
>>
>>1041706
N scale Kato unitrack is god-tier and you can take it apart over and over again without wear on the connecting joints. Bachmann by comparison is garbage. You can fit a loop of the narrow radius curved track (216mm and less) on a normal sized coffee table with space left over. Keep in mind though that if you go that narrow only shorter 4-axle locomotives and 50' or less rolling stock will navigate the curves properly.
>>
I have a bunch of old steel track from my grandpa's HO set. When I am building new stuff I use nickle silver. Is there any point to keep the old steel stuff? Its tarnished. I could clean it up but is it worth it?
>>
>>
So what era and roads do you prefer to model?

I like the early 1970s since you can run early BN/WP rainbow consists and there are still plenty of Alcos and Baldwins around. Also had the best paint schemes.
>>
>>1041862
I haven't seen steel track in years. I'd try to give it away or maybe slip it into a free bin at the next train show. I still have the brass 9" sections from a Tyco trainset I got in 1975. Absolute crap as it tarnished like crazy. But I get all nostalgic and can't find myself to part with it. (hangs head in embarrassment).
>>
>>1041943
CPR 1953 -> 1957. Classic diesels with a classic paint scheme.
>>
>>1041996

Can't really comment too much myself. I spent like five hours organizing that track into bundles and putting it with all of the original loco boxes of my grandpas stuff into an old chest.
>>
>>1042000
Sounds good, do you model the western end? Got any pics?
>>
>>1041943
1960's Japanese National Railways, during the rural transition to electric and diesel. Although I can't help picking up some WP and SP stock as well.
>>
>>1041943
Current with a twist.

In my world, UP didn't scrap all their GP30 A's and B's, and instead sold them off. Some of these were bought and re-powered with EMD710's.

Problem is the foaming. For my own stuff, I'm a rivet counter, right down to the track (Proto:87 ultimate line), scratch built everything, etc.

Even doing DCC different, though I'm just in the start phases of that.
>>
>>1040869

New cars arrived. Bought eight bachmann ore cars. Sadly the place I bought them from did not have eight of one color. Swapped out the couplers on the Family Lines System switcher to 25/64 couplers. Much longer and now no corner is too tight.

I will probably buy a couple more ore cars because they will fit into the puzzle. I will then number them for making the puzzle go easier.

Will be going with iron mine motif.

Buddy of mine showed me the japanese HO stuff. Will be turning my overall 25 ft wall setup into a Japanese motif and will work this into the center. Will do a raised track going off 10 feet from this to each side to give me 4/5 in rise and a 1/2 percent grade.
>>
>>1042168

gonna try some weathering on the cars?
maybe have a few be loaded?
>>
>>1042217

I want to do loaded cars. Need to experiment with some lightweight authentic looking iron ore. Considering crumbling some styrofoam and finding a non styro-melting paint. Otherwise maybe some rock if the switch can handle it.

As far as weathering goes, how does one go about doing that well?
>>
>>1041943

British Rail sectorisation era, early to mid 1990s. Mostly just Network SouthEast but with a bit of freight and probably an Intercity HST to be added at some point because I just like the newer Dapol one and fully-detailed MkIIIs too much to ignore them.

Don't have a layout at the moment, just some Kato track that I'm expanding as soon as possible. I'm building up a decent sized collection of rolling stock to accurately fit the era and run on a club layout though now they have a large n gauge layout.
>>
>>1041943
>So what era and roads do you prefer to model?
Current is a mishmash of used shit.
Next one I do from scratch is either of these:
HO scale - late '50s era - No specific roads (too much autism), want to mix early diesel streamliners and the last dregs of steam with a couple electrics using both British and Murrican stuff.
N scale - recent/current era - Japan-centred for all the various funky-coloured JRT highspeeds.

It's a kato model of an ED16, they were built as a smaller version of the mainline EF52, and were mostly used to haul limestone and general freight on the mountainous lines west of Tokyo. They were pretty durable, so some lasted from the 1930's till the 1980's.

>>
>>1042447

Was messing around with it today. Pretty sure I am just going to do it live. Will try to get the base set up tomorrow and if I can find the foam maybe some basic molding.

What would you say is a safe gradient for n gauge?
>>
>>1042913
Look up NMRA standards to be sure, but a 2% is usually safe.
>>
>>1042760
/li/ here, i've always wanted to do a trip involving the LIRR to greenport, bus to orient, ferry to new london, SLE to new haven, and MNR to new york

the only issue is that there would be a significant layover in new london and im not certain how safe it is

Nice. If you want some cheap N scale locos modeltrainstuff has the best deals, particularly the Bachmann DCC equipped ones.
>>
>>1043140

Cheap is not something I am concerned with. I was told to specifially avoid N scale bachmann. Shop said if I want to buy them I will have to do it online because they wont order them for me, they didnt want to deal with feeling responsible if they break.

Imagine I will stick mostly kato. Bought this as a test set to test gradients on my setup. Going to do almost entirely a japanese theme. Will pick up the full 16 car set shinkansen (nozumi) and two or three commuter lines. Do all the woodwork myself in building it. Hill against the wall with commuter running on top going by a hot spring and a shrine. Built a country setup and then a town with some waterfront. Shinkansen will run flat.

Curious, Graham Farish is Bachmann's N sclae UK line and they are generally pretty good.

Not sure what Bachmann's US range is like but their UK Graham Farish one is neither cheap, nor poorly made. At the moment some of the newer models especially are the best on the market in terms of quality and design with only occasional better alternatives. I mean don't get me wrong, there are a occasional mistakes by them like their Class 66s which still have issues with quality control and a design flaw in their gears but overall their range is top quality.

But depends on the age of what you're buying, go back 10-15 years and most n gauge was generally shitty, limited in range and badly made.

Pic related is my UK Bachmann Class 47 loco and some Mk2As, in the latter probably the best carriages in n gauge at the moment alongside Dapol's Mk3 ones from a few years ago.

So I went to a model train thing at my local mall. Was total shit. There was an O, two HO, and a G. One of the HO was interesting but everything else was like they didnt even try.

Decided to go nuclear and build an kek'n N set of my own to take next year. Right now in the planning stages. Will be an L some 16x6 ft. Will make it so it can be expanded later. Basic design attached.

Central lake, hills surrounding. Will run a tram on the hill down to small town on L. Lake in the center with a waterfall. The shinkansen will run flat down the middle area of L with some tunnels and a truss bridge over lake.

Going to do a japanese design, although will still run the amtrak because kek it this is America and I am free.

Kato layouts are perfect for multi-track drifting if you're quick on the switchers.

Fair enough, I know during the 50's & 60's BR did some experiments putting different regions locos on different regions tracks, know some V2's were trials on GWR lines, could get some historical accuracy there I guess? Snow must be the hardest thing to model. Look up a guy by the name of Mark Dance he has an N-scale layout called the Columbia & Western that features an impressive snow scene. Google him, he has youtube vids and is in this months Model Railroader magazine and numerous backissues of CRM.

I have a May 2013 issue of RMC that features his layout but it doesn't explain how he did the realistic snow. I think that was explained in an earlier issue.

Years ago I read about how a guy sprinkled diamond dust on top of plaster to get that sparkly blue-white look. But the material is expensive & exotic. Haven't heard anyone else using that.
>>
>>1047942
Yeah, Hornby do LNER Teak and Bahcman do LNER Thompson coaches which the D16's would have ran with, I've got a mix of them in BR livery as well as some MK 1's as I'm going to model 1950's/60's East Anglia when I have time/ money/ space to do it....

You'll probably be able to get it from several different online retailers for less than $100. Only fools pay MSRP for a locomotive, I don't think I ever have in my 3 years of buying N scale.
