If you had unlimited money, what bike would you get?

I'd probably get a 'rello Dogma 2bh.
>>
>>1035849
I know it's a meme bike, but I love those S-Works Venge ViaS Discs that pop up on Insta. Murdered out with some 60mm Rovals, Rotor cranks and E-Tap.
>>
>>1035849
Geez, Bicycling Magazine regularly trots out $10000 road race bikes, any of which I'm sure would be awesome to race on, but beyond scoffing at way too expensive bikes they review, I don't think about them too much. I'd be perfectly happy with a Wilier Zero Point Nine or Zero Point Seven, for that matter, and they're affordable enough that I should be able to save for one of them.
>>
>>1035849
The exact same bike as your picture, OP. But with full campy and in full black. How much does that frame set costs?
>>
Its not even that expensive I just absolutely lust over the Endurace CF SLX, guess I'd get it with di2 Dura Ace and all the other top of the line gear. Im not a racer and probably wont ever be, so I'd prefer that over the Ultimate.
>>
>>1035880

And if I could get two, Id get some kind of fancy gravel bike as well. Maybe a tricked out GT Grade.

Probably a lugged carbon Colnago with Super Record if it was going to be my one and only bike. A custom handbuilt steel frame would also be high on my list.

A Bianchi Specialissima with Reynolds RZR 46 wheels and SRAM Red eTap.
>>
>>1035891
I would go the custom route as well.
I'd take the frame builder out to dinner and discuss what I'm looking for. Go riding with him so he can see my abilities and limitations. Put lots of effort into my personal fitting, because my arthritis means my body does not adapt well to some idealized athlete's geometry.

So many great frame builders. Paul Sadoff (Rock Lobster) and John Caletti (Caletti Cycles) are local - they'd be my pick. A Specialized frame might have more engineering, but I prefer having a human connection with my frame builder.

I've ridden with folks from my local shops for a few decades and trust them to source and assemble parts that I'll be happy with twenty years from now, if I'm lucky enough to still be alive and riding. Campagnolo, Mavic, Chris King, Ritchey, SMP, and Challenge.

Specialissima is my dream bike but with mechanical super record and the same wheels as in your pic, though I'd probably want some Shamals for everyday riding.
>>
I'd go with a mid travel mountain bike. 160mm travel with a custom fit frame, possibly using the magic link, Pinion gearbox, every possible made of carbon and titanium bolts where appropriate, Hope components because I'd want to support a UK company, and I suppose if funds are unlimited I could convince Rockshox to make a long travel RS1. Would like to stay 26" but would probably end up with 27.5" because that'll give the most tyre options in the future, allowing clearance for plus sized tyres just in case I ever wanted to try that out.

At a rough guess I'd probably say around £10k minus the fork and I couldn't even begin to guess how much that would cost (could be another £10k, could be £50k).

OP here. I think yours has beaten mine actually.

I fucking love Colnagos, I didn't realise you could still get them lugged like that, I thought they modernised them.

My dad's got a C40, carbon lugs and everything, with a flat top tube like all old bikes had.

In fact here's a pic from google - not my dad's obviously, but exactly the same frame in the same paint job. My dad's got everything Dura-Ace, apart from the drivetrain which is Ultegra (I think because you can't get a Dura-Ace compact, or something weird like that. Or maybe he just saved some bucks.)

I've ridden it on a couple of occasions, it's fucking sick. I've ridden his other bikes (both aluminium) for much long periods, because the Colnago is his prized possession. The difference of the full carbon Colnago to the other two is insane. Especially going up hills, that's when you really feel it. It's like you've halved in weight.

Custom titanium frame, something like gt grade or kona rove for geo but with some modifications for bigger tires. Hydraulic dick breakers and whatever is the nicest drivetrain with triple cranks and drop bar levers.

I really don't care about these chinese carbon bikes with 25c tires and rim brakes. Nice to look at maybe. But wouldn't want to ride that daily.

In his defence the only way to get proper low gears on road groupsets is either by mixing in mtb parts or kludgey stuff like the roadlink.
>>
>>1036031
How many gear inches is a "proper low gear"?
>>
>>1036034
I don't know anything about gear inches, but probably something where the biggest cog has more teeth than the smallest chainring by a decent amount. 34/28 or 34/32 is nice for climbing hills on a light road bike but add in a load or loose surface and it's struggling.

Well good for you, but I'm not you.
>>
>>1036035
Yeah the usual compact cranks and a big cassette is fine for summer training rides.
Unfortunately I need to carry stuff on my bikes, ride up hills with studded tires on roads with snow, ice and gravel, etc.
>>
>>1036778
>>inb4 muh grams
Q-factor, senpai. And chain rub. And Q-factor.
>>
>>1036778
>I like having plenty of gears to choose from and I haven't experienced any downsides with a triple.
Again, you don't seem to realize how gearing has changed since the days of 8/9 speed. A triple is no longer needed given the range 10/11 speed cassettes can now provide.
>>
Bianchi Eroica, then I'd only ride wearing all wool.
>>
>>1036778
You can use a road triple as a double. I use a Shimano 105 5703 triple crank with just a 42T big chainring and 24T small chainring for my touring rig (11-32 cogs). This gives me a low of 20 gear inches which is the standard most tourers try to reach using full triple cranks. Works quite well. I can climb pretty much anything loaded, even offroad, and still go fairly fast on the flat. I miss one upper gear when going downhill but it's no big deal for a non-race bike.

Why would you ever go with a Rohloff over a Pinion frame for a dream bike?
>>
>>1036722
what's the make on that beautiful black white and red frame, though?
>>
>>1036808
It's way easier to replace in case it gets destroyed.
>>
>>1036810
But it's less likely to get destroyed (not that a Rohloff is particularly fragile).

I'd actually say it'd take less effort to switch out a Pinion gearbox than to change a hub (assuming you didn't already have a spare laced to a rim). It's just six bolts to undo and then it drops out.

>>1036796
I know it's not needed. But more chainrings allows you to pick a tighter cassette and still have big range.
>>1036804
Sounds like a good bodge for many bikes, but i think this thread was about dream bikes or something like that. Might as well be able to use that outer ring if you have a triple crank.

All of the fuckin' off-the-rack chinese carbon fredsleds. Don't you folks have any imagination? If my budget was truly unlimited, you'd better bet your ass I'm getting something custom.

So many great builders - I've always wanted a genuine Bruce Gordon, for example. But if my unlimited budget has to go towards a single bike, I think it would have to be a Steve Potts - something like the trail bike collab he's doing with Monkey Wrench Cycles (pic related). Just needs slightly different geo for drop bars and some bright orange paint.
>>
>>1037106
That dude's shop is in my home town. Thinking about having him build a 650b frame for me if I decide to sell my motorcycle this spring.
>>
>>1036016
I'm still rocking 3x9 setups on three of my bikes and a 2x8 on the fourth. There's not a single derailleur on my bikes that's younger than 10 years old, and it all still works like new.

If I was spec'ing a dream bike, I'd totally go with a full NOS XTR M900 groupset - triple cranks, 8-speeds cassette, PD-M737 SPD pedals, everything.
>ok maybe not the cantis

>>1036034
Depends entirely on what you're doing.

For casual road riding in the Santa Cruz mountains, I'd consider a 34/28 (~33.2 gear-inches) to be about the highest I'd want my low gear to be. I know people who ride with higher bottom gears; I am not that hardcore.

My monstercross bike bottoms out with a 22/28, around 22.0 gear-inches. I've debated gearing down even further with a larger MTB cassette, but I like the tighter cassette for mixed road/dirt rides and I just HTFU on steep fireroad climbs.

My mountain bike with 26" wheels rocks a 22/34 on the low end, for a stump-pulling ~17.2 gear-inches. Not necessary, but nice on days with +5k ft of steep climbing.
