I played this at work the other day for some reason.

It only took 10 minutes for my boss to ask what the fuck we were listening to and then demanding I change it to something else.

Anyone else here revealed their autism to their co-workers?

I've got a story, I told it on /mu/ about a year and half ago but have tried repressing the memory since

>At work tidying up the store with co-workers at the time
>Manager usually lets us play music on the loud speaker. Although i never do
>Co-worker "Anon you never put your music on"
>I laugh and try and try and joke it off
>Next thing i know 10 of my co-workers chanting "Put your music on!"
>I finally submit and walk to the loud speaker and plug in my phone
>Don't know what to put on and just put on shuffle
>I walk back to where i was with my co workers about a 2 minute and a half walk from the loud speaker.
>First song is fine
>The second song though....
>I listen i hear the radio sample..."Jeromes Dream" i said to myself.
>I know what's coming
>I start walking fast Co workers saying "where's anon going?"
>It's a battle with time at this point
>Suddenly the loud guitars come in Co-workers shouting "What the fuck is this shit?"
>The screaming comes in i hear laughs from across the store "Is that a fuckin' chicken lol" i hear.
>Finally get to my phone and unplug it from the loud speaker in embarrassment.
>Continue to hear laughs from across the store and warehouse
>Get back co-workers laughing
>"Anon i didn't know you were one of those goths" "I BET HE BITES BATS HEADS OFF LIKE THAT GUY OZZY OSBOURNE LOL"
>I just stand in silence ashamed
>Co-worker put his phone on loud speaker Iggy Azalea - Fancy plays.
>Known as the "Goth" guy to this day despite not resembling one at all.

I really dont see the big deal. Why didny you just shurg, say its only 3 minutes, the riffs are good. I found it interesting and different, etc. Unplugging the phone and acting in shame is fucking weird.
My last job I would put on grouper and blast it. I'd put on philip glass akhnaten album. Or something from the Prologue label, or blast Godspeed. Sometimes Id put on Stars of the Lid. People just listened b/c after the comments theyd have no choice but to listen, and some people ended up liking the stuff i played. Daphne Orams Public dreams and Private nightmares was bought by another coworker who showed it to a lot of his friends.
So it goes man, and so do we.

I'm socially autistic and used to extremely lack confidence.
>>
>>75015431

Because people are sanctimonious about music for some odd reason, no matter their actual interest
>>
>>75015682
I guess at that last job it helped there were a few other autists about. One has a cassette collection and showed me sonic youth, which i loved.
People do get weirded out though when you play things they have never heard of.
Once at a construction job a guy was playing pandora on some kind of country hip hop mix channel, where it was country music with rap beats. He asked me if i wanted to play anything so i said ok and put it on a stars of the lid channel. A few minutes in he asked, very offended, "What the hell IS THIS?" He couldnt wrap his mind around something that wasnt smothered with stale stock beat samples and mindless lyrics with a simple rhyming tune.
It is funny to watch their initial reactions.
I cant quite put my finger on what makes us different.
>>

>>
Recently found out about post-rock only maybe 2 months ago. Is it widely received as consistently good music?
>>
>>75015670
It's just not always that easy. There is a large gap between lyrical music and instrumental music. You have to have a certain level of understanding and appreciation for music to develop an ear for instrumental music.
Whenever I show people some of my favorite albums, bands, songs, etc., I typically get 'when are the vocals coming in?' 'is there really no singing at all?' 'this music just sort of drones on anon..' That last one, someone said it about the song The Great Plains by STS. Which is prime prog, nothing slow moving and massive like Astralia or hubris.
It hurts knowing the only real way someone else will like the music you do is if they sit and listen to it for themselves.
>>
>>75015820
People become offended almost when it doesnt take or adhere to the nomal song structure of radio hits.
Again as i said in an earlier post, im not quite positive what makes us different. More imagination?
>>

no you fucking don't. every god damn normies love the shit out of hans zimmer's shitty ass film scores. because he introduced to them thru a massive pop culture films
>>
>>75015841
>Again as i said in an earlier post, im not quite positive what makes us different. More imagination?
I think experience is the #1 thing. Most people just don't care, they want background noise and nice singing or whatever. For example, have you ever tried using Linux or some complicated distro? Linux enthusiasts would tell you it's amazing, it's great, you get all the control over your computer as opposed to Windows or Mac. But most people just won't care. Not the best example, I know, but most people don't "listen" to music, it's just noise and entertainment to pass time.
>>
>>75015858
Why do you care so much about how you are perceived?
>>
>>75015888
because unlike you neets. if you want a pay raise at your job. you need fucking social skills to rank up. its half about how good you are and majority about how your bosses and co-workers feel about you.
>>
>>75015447

>>
>>75015916

>>
>>75015885
Ah yeah thats a good point, the same way I'll typically use the internet to learn or discuss something, but I see a lot of people with their phones just opened up to facebook...just scrolling mindlessly. They arent even having fun, it seems more of an addiction to scrolling through a vast torrent of data.
>>
>>75015875
Idk what normies you're hanging around, but, at their absolute zenith, the people I'm around MIGHT have a videogame OST song or two in their playlist. And if it's anything else instrumental, it's typically beat-tapes or piano. Only my non normie friends have scores they enjoy and listen to. And desu, two of them are major film buffs.

>>75015841
My honest thought is more patience. But more imagination isn't far off either, imo. Lyrics are fairly concrete, pee set imagery which fits over commonly felt emotions. Whereas instrumentals have very little moldings, and tap raw emotion which spawns as whatever you see in your mind. Far more intimate; even regardless of lyrics relating specific emotions.
>>
>>75015815
Only the first wave (Talk Talk, Slint, Bark Psychosis, Swans) and part of the second (GY!BE). Third wave is mostly trash crescendocore except for some original artists like Matryoshka or World's end Girlfriend, which arent even really post-rock

>be me
>appreciate noise but true love for post-rock/psychedelic mostly
>often brag about my love for noise and harsh-noise for lulz
>People get very weirded out
>often try to reject me at first
>Later they discover I'm human too
>accept me
>I still taunt them when they talk about objectively bad music
>get away with it because they don't understand my views on music anyway.

That's my general attitude in life. just don't take yourself or what you like too seriously.
I can befriend someone while they accept me as who I am. Interaction with people become also more interesting because you can insult/taunt them on their taste as they do on yours.
And this is especially funny when you're defending Merzbow against some random untalented rapper using autotune. The usual normie will get so confused. I have actually won some of these arguments. not by making the normie like merzbow but simply letting him so confused, without argument and probably a bit triggered on the way.
>>
>>75015885
But that's exactly how I got into instrumental music in the first place. And whenever I'm talking with coworkers snout the rap and shit that they play, they even tell me they mostly like the beats and rhythms. So it really amazes me that people will listen lyrical music about bullshit for the beats, but won't listen to INSTRUMENTAL music for the same purposes.
I also partially believe it's because those people aren't entirely comfortable in their minds, and are uneasy with music they isn't quite literally talking to them.

When it's good it's great, but a lot of it is very, very dull. Even the core bands that popularized the genre (Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, Sigur Pos) have a lot of filler.
Best post rock: Godspeed, Do Make Say Think, Talk Talk (Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock), Sigur Pos (Ageatis Byjrun and Untitled), Mogwai - Young Team through to Mr Beast are all pretty solid, Explosions - Those Who Tell the Truth....., This Will Destroy You, recent Swans, early ISIS (post metal), Bark Psychosis.

But there are always people to talk to, you know? Even online. Your mind is a sanctuary, there's no good reason to be uncomfortable in there. Talk to people if you want conversation and comfort; listen to music if you want tranquility and balance. That balance us only found with raw music, no words.

Nahh, I've got loads of mates into post-rock.
Even had a bunch of mates start a couple of post-rock bands because I introduced them to it.
You've just gotta show them the more upbeat math rock/post-rock stuff to ease them in as it's a bit more accessable than a 25 minute drone tune.
>>
>>75017531
still depends on the vibe. Once i got a friend into godspeed when he was smoking and playing GTA V. At the end of every crescendo he basically died and the whole thing was always accidentally on perfect time with the music so he fell in love it.
People without imagination will have trouble filling in the blacks with long movement pieces bc they cant imagine a story, where never taught how or forgot how. But playing during an activity they see the light of it.

Yeah, when I was 15 or so, oh my god... I was trying to obtain good taste in music, and I got a bunch of CDs for Christmas like Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Do Make Say Think, and My Bloody Valentine. I did like these albums, appreciated them, but it was a little forced, as hopefully it always is when you're trying to broaden your artistic horizons. Anyway, my aunt was having us for New Year's, a few states north, so we drove up there, and for some reason I brought a shoebox packed with every CD I own. We were only going to be there for the weekend. I can see now, looking back, that a big part of my personality was (and still is to some extent) the desire to have people think I had good taste in art. I brought the shoebox full of CDs to show off. That's not even the embarrassing part. The embarrassing part is that (this is hard to type) my aunt whose house we went to, she's a pretty woman and a serious painter, and the only person in my family who I thought might have a sophisticated artistic sense. So what I did was, while she was in the kitchen talking to my mom and while my dad was standing outside the kitchen clutching a beer and bullshitting with some guy I didn't know, and while other people were milling about, I asked her if I could put some music on. She said sure. I went to the stereo, put Godspeed You! Black Emperor's "Lift Yr. Skinny Fists" in the CD tray and adjusted the volume so that it wasn't too loud, but loud enough for the sound to enter the kitchen. I was hoping that my aunt would hear the music, be intrigued, and come out of the kitchen and ask me about it. This was how I imagined it. I realize almost immediately that I've made a mistake. It doesn't sound right, not the right vibe, what was I thinking? Halfway through the first track, I turn it off. My aunt is still in the kitchen talking and laughing, not paying any attention, and the guy talking to my dad, when he hears the music stop, sees it was me who turned it off and says "Thank you."
>>
>>75017927
This physically made me cringe.
>>
>>75017927

Ouch. Last summer I worked at a farm that made our produce into pizzas. One day the owner was late, so I put on some Do Make Say Think and tended the bar, was talking to people, I thought DMST added to the vibes really well. The owner got back, unplugged my phone and said, "At least you played......something," as he started his typical Bob Dylan playlist.

Some music is better through headphones than speakers, I guess. Like Pretend, I would never play them over speakers to anyone.
>>
Another story. Same era.

Playing "Pet Sounds" for my mom and my sister in the car.

MOM: This is The Beach Boys?
SISTER: It sounds like Christmas music.
MOM: Let me see the CD. [Turns it over] I don't recognize any of these songs and I grew up in the 60s. "Help Me Rhonda," "California Girls," those are the hits.
ME: This is the good Beach Boys album.
MOM: I don't see anything good.
SISTER: It sounds like Christmas music.
ME: This is when Brian Wilson started taking LSD.
MOM: Yeah, it sounds like it.
SISTER: It sounds like Christmas music.

Throughout my life my good taste in music has been accompanied by a complete cluelessness about when that music should be played. It's like I know how to wear a tuxedo but keep wearing it to Wal-Mart.
>>
>>750209>>37
I guess AC/DC, Green Day, System Of A Down, Linkin Park, Eminem,

if you're a /mu/ drone your mental health is shit on and offline
>>
>>75015431
It's actually the case the other way around as well.
The shittier someone's taste, the more confident they are playing it in public.

indeed. it does.

>Have professor that always plays music in class because he firmly believes that the youth of today doesn't have good taste in music.
>Oh boy, it's one of these guys.
>Plays a Bob Dylan cover where the singer stops for a moment and states that is she is very nervous and apologizes for having forgotten the lyrics.
>Professor comments afterwards that he likes this particular live recording because it feels more human than extremely high fidelity music that extracts the soul of the musician.
>He often plays folk music, usually just whatever is on his mind.
Even if his taste in music isn't Patricianâ„¢ (he admits to not thinking Bob Dylan's music was notable until later in life) he genuinely enjoys what he listens to and that is why he wants to share it.

I don't think it's worth showing other people your music unless you genuinely enjoy listening to it and feel that someone else might enjoy it too. Listening to music with others is fundamentally a social experience.

When I was 16 I once played Merzbow for the entire class because the projector was on and I couldn't resist myself. We had 5 minutes left before the end of the class and we could play something. Got some weirds looks and the teacher asked me "do you really listen to this?" and I said "sometimes."

It was this track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SDv8VBrXao

>Played Nebraska and 12 Golden Country Greats at work

In high school the girl I liked sent me some indie-folk music to check out because she really liked it.

I sent her back some prog.

You can probably guess what did (or didn't) happen next.

>we'd listen to music in the morning on a radio with an aux jack on it
>spic bitch manager would put on either the top 40 station or the fucking Mexican station
>worked with a bunch of hipsters and pop punk kids
>one day get back to the back before manager does and plug my ipod in and put on some pop punk
>manager instantly starts complaining about it
>says nobody else wants to listen to it
>literally ask everyone right there on the spot if they mind listening to this
>they say no and some people say they'd much rather listen to this than the radio
>mfw later I put on Madvillainy and still nobody cared except the manager

>>
>>75023192
The Mars Volta, Karnivool.

Probably could have been worse (if included classic prog like Rush, Genesis, Yes) but I still cringe pretty hard thinking about it
>>
>>75015552
The people you tell that to must think you're the only person on earth who doesn't like music.
I'd much rather have people think that I just listen to "weird stuff" rather than be the fool who "just doesn't like music".

i love this kind of shit

>blank stare

>see girl in joy division shirt
>ask if she's ever seen them live

>see girl in doc martens

1997, third grade, got a bunch of hand-me-down clothes from my uncle, included is a Weezer shirt that's absolutely gigantic on me, wear it to school anyway, tell people it's a WWF shirt, because that's what I think it is.

Lmao at the misfits part that is hilarious. These are all quality social interactions
>>
>>75023693

It's not even that weird. If you played Beefheart you probably would have had a Rite of Spring type situation
>>
>>75023285
I don't know Rush and Yes are pretty mainstream for prog (at least more than mars volta)
>>
>>75024607
More mainstream, but also more nerdy/goofy and more likely to be considered a loser
>>
>>75019754
I've found this to be true also
