The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Finishing up my Obscure chart
----
>Christopher Hobbs/John Adams/Gavin Bryars - Ensemble Pieces
>Minimalism
The remastered version of this release actually removes a track because they realized that John Adams was better off a journalist than composer. American Standard is heavily diluted romanticism for old television. There's also a preacher trying to convince a man to follow God over the radio, and the ensemble's notes turn foul as the the preacher is told to politely fuck off. 1, 2, 1-2-3-4 is just as weary of a sludge, like a lounge after a huge event. A distant warble plays with typical piano + bass and strings, while initially giving a charming image, should not be 15 minutes in length.

Hobbs' compositions (Aran and McCrimmon) take the clockwork influences of Machine Music but surgically induces its minimalism, not through decay. Compensates for the longer halves of this album, somewhat.

5/10

>Max Eastley / David Toop - New and Rediscovered Musical Instruments
>Free Improv, Minimalism
First track starts real strong with the usage of a hydrophone, detecting eerie moans underwater. Metallophone is a little less impressive, being just cascades of metal strikes. I couldn't find any information on the Centrophone, but it was metallic and sounded like it belonged in a temple. The Elastic Aerophone is apparently a wind-propelled instrument, but belongs in a feverish nightmare. All four Eastley tracks are more like exhibitions than actual music, ambient at best.

David Toop's side is very discomforting, with an androgynous Arca falsetto whispering of the "Bathosphere". The Divination Of follows with periods of silence and temple bells, and The Chairs Story brings back the same discomforting voice with woodwinds. It's unusual, partially intriguing, but broken up by periods of mediocrity.

>Tom Phillips/Gavin Bryars - Irma
>Modern Classical, Minimalism
The final release from Obscure records, an experimental opera. "The score involved 93 random phrases taken from the 1892 novel A Human Document by W.H. Mallock", from widipedia. The overture progresses in quarters, until Howard Skempton and Lucie Skeaping's voices come in-- Skempton's fairly plain, Skeaping's more opulent. They add their own complexity as the orchestra's chords expand with it.

Dunno if I could discern any real meaning from the randomness, but it's still a dreamy listen. Not really an opera, more like These New Puritans with Paddy McAloon.

Igorrr - Savage Sinusoid
Can't deny he's good at his schtick but this didn't feel as ingenious as the other one I've heard. He's still using a lot of different material and sticking it together well but there's much more straightforward metal riff/breaks parts. Also weirdly compressed at times.

Bolts - Collecting Dust
A couple of jazzy beats (one samples some polish song, will have to find out what that is), nothing stands out but it's solid. Not what I expected after hearing a couple really unique singular tracks on later compilations

Mikko Joensuu - Amen 3
Teenage sounding dude trying to distract you from senseless lyrics by making his backings as dull and long as possible. I guess he was going for a Coil kind of ambience but it doesn't work out well.

ugh

The story goes like this: Earth is captured by a technocapital singularity as renaissance rationalitization and oceanic navigation lock into commoditization take-off. Logistically accelerating techno-economic interactivity crumbles social order in auto-sophisticating machine runaway. As markets learn to manufacture intelligence, politics modernizes, upgrades paranoia, and tries to get a grip.
The body count climbs through a series of globewars. Emergent Planetary Commercium trashes the Holy Roman Empire, the Napoleonic Continental System, the Second and Third Reich, and the Soviet International, cranking-up world disorder through compressing phases. Deregulation and the state arms-race each other into cyberspace.

By the time soft-engineering slithers out of its box into yours, human security is lurching into crisis. Cloning, lateral genodata transfer, transversal replication, and cyberotics, flood in amongst a relapse onto bacterial sex.

Neo-China arrives from the future.

Hypersynthetic drugs click into digital voodoo.

Retro-disease.

Nanospasm.

>Vico C - Angel Que Habia Muerto
vico c is back from jail after getting arrested for getting in a motorcycle accident while drunk, and he has hit his full potential here. lots of great hits on this, a rework of La Recta Final (one of his early tracks with fantastic lyrics but his young voice, awful delivery and primitive beats ruined), and of course great rhymes. jail (and a better producer) served him pretty well, probably the only work of his i would recommend.

>tego calderon - el abayarde contra-ataca
he really is just puertorrican 2pac: nearly identical voice, just as overrated, and probably alive in serbia making fast raps.

Time-pressure, by its very nature, is difficult to think about. Typically, while the opportunity for deliberation is not necessarily presumed, it is at least – with overwhelming likelihood – mistaken for an historical constant, rather than a variable. If there was ever time to think, we think, there still is and will always be. The definite probability that the allotment of time to decision-making is undergoing systematic compression remains a neglected consideration, even among those paying explicit and exceptional attention to the increasing rapidity of change.

In all honestly I've only read a couple articles of his on Jacobite. Didn't find anything sticking around for there. I'm aware he used to be more of a lefty when he was with Ccru (at least I remember reading that somewhere) but I don't really care too much either way right now. I've been planning to get a book of his once I'm "finished" with Capitalism and Schizophrenia for good but even then he's low on the list.

Also theory-fiction is dumb and right-accelerationism is pseudo-philosophy for neolib romantics (judgment reserved over left-accelerationism).

Oren Ambarchi - Suspension
>ambient, drone

Ambarchi takes a much quieter and more subtle approach to long electronic compositions here than he did on Hubris. Most of the tracks here are extremely minimal, using only extremely low bass tones and the interference that occurs between them as the substance of the compositions. It’s done very well and the result can be very hypnotic if you let it drift into the background of your mind. Textures are great, atmosphere is dark and thoughtful, sounds are relatively varied; I have very few complaints with this!

Had to replace an album because I couldn't find it.

>Foxes In Fiction – Swung From The Branches
The first half is ambient, while the second half is a mix of ambient pop and dream pop. It corresponds with sides A and B of the cassette version (It was the inaugural release on Foxes In Fiction’s own label Orchid Tapes), but it’s still a pretty baffling decision. Normally it wouldn’t be that much of a problem, but the entirety of the vocal section is greatly inferior to the ambient section. The dream pop songs in particular are very bland, and don’t fit in very well with the ambient sound that is on all of the other songs. It’s a shame, because I really do like the ambient tracks.
3.0+

>Faultline – Your Love Means Everything (2004 reissue)
Boring downtempo/trip hop with an inexplicably star-studded collection of guest features.
2.5-

>Weaver At The Loom – I Was Searching And I Found
Basic alt-rock, but with cinematic post-rock instrumentation. Sounds like a painfully generic combination, and it totally is, but I’m a sucker for “sensitive” radio-friendly music with male vocals so I can dig it.
3.0

>Titus Andronicus – The Monitor
I’m surprised that none of the /daily/ users I’m friends with on RYM have listened to The Monitor, it’s essential 2010-core. That being said I have absolutely no exposure to any of the supposed clear influences at play here, and I have absolutely no interest in the themes presented across the album, so there’s not much for me to appreciate.
2.0

>Buckethead – Colma
I like new age music.
3.5+

>Hoquiam – Hoquiam
Fairly run of the mill sad folk, makes me think of early Songs:Ohia just a bit at times, though that comparison is a little generous. This is actually a Damien Jurado side project, which reminds me that I still need to listen to some of his work.

>Reggaeton
>written by Raquel Z. Rivera

i was scrolling through amazon one day and this book piqued my eye. a book about reggaeton? wow! i've always wanted to dig into a deeper understanding of the history of reggaeton! so i ordered it. and i paid for it. and i got it in the mail and read it.

this is a collection of essays relating to reggaeton's origins, popularization, toxic masculinity / under representation of women / women turned into objects, its politics, racial problems, etc. probably the most detailed book you'll find on the subject, although a bit dated now that reggaeton has decayed, returned and basically converted into trap music for the most part. it's a great way to understand everything about it if you haven't lived it first-hand.

not what i was expecting, digs way more into racial issues and origin stories than i would've wanted. there were some brilliant essays though, particularly the ones on censorship (i tell u politicians did the funniest stuff) and on overt masculinity. if it's online, i recommend reading "A Man Lives Here, Reggaeton's Hypermasculine Resident" by Alfredo Nieves Moreno. but for every brilliant essay, theres two boring ones that go nowhere.

I don't really see an audience for a book like this, most people who love reggaeton are cacos and yales that don't read at all and just want to dance to the music, and anyone who is nerdy enough to care about reading a book on a musical genre would definitely not be choosing reggaeton as their reading material.

should you read it? no. this is definitely only for the most pedantic of reggaeton enthusiasts. and that demographic probably only extends to the writers of these essays and me.

>Charles Mingus - Let My Children Hear Music
>Big Band, Third Stream

The classical influences are much more pronounced in this album, enough to make me recheck Black Saint. Adagio Ma Non Troppo was probably my favorite track, after how overwhelming Shoes of the Fisherman's Wife was (hearing it again). The Clown 's Afraid Too was also clever. I understand The Chill Of Death is a recitation, but I wished the presence of the band wasn't as muted.

There was never any point that gave me chills, or clicked internally. It was overabundant and familiar, and less preferable to Black Saint.

6/10

>Omni - Deluxe
>Post-Punk, Indie Rock
Women Clone #1
If anything, they're good at making grooves. Significantly less grabbing than any other lo-fi pop I've heard, but doesn't quite become grating.

5/10

>Mercury Rev - Yerself is Steam
>Neo-Psychedelia, Shoegaze
Really great instrumental for the opener, even if I'm not as enthusiastic about Donahue's voice interrupting the denser parts. On the other hand Blue and Black works with dramatized speech similar to Xiu Xiu, and pop punk melodies interrupted by unconventional sounds.

After the apocalyptic Sweet Oddysee, Frittering is a dreamy afterburn and respite from the stranger parts of the first half of the album. Very Sleepy Rivers wasn't as grand as I'd hope it'd be, but it was clearly meant to be the trippiest track. In this case, the bonus track is the true closer for the album. Lots of standout tracks, substantial release overall.

Winners
Letov - Geinoh Yamashirogumi - Osorezan / Do no Kenbai
Spook. Wah heavy psyche part sounded out of place. Quite a laundry list of genres on the rym page.
3.0-

Mark And - Jordaan Mason & the Horse Museum - Divorce Lawyers I Shaved My Head
Unfortunately average. Or above average, rather. And it's too long. I do like how genuine it is, but that doesn't make up for it being kinda boring.
3.0-

Losers
Tuco - Sun City Girls - Funeral Mariachi
This is the first Sun City Girls album I've heard in full. It's a decent sort of downbeat folky thing with some psyche-ish parts, but not some ultra eclectic avant zappa-esque thing like I expected from what I've heard about the band. Although from what I understand there's some emotional pretext to why this album is apparently different from their others.
2.5+

Nyar - Dreamend - I Ate Myself Bite by Bite
A psyche folk album that lacks the eccentricities of landmark bands like Comus or even Animal Collective (although I might just be saying that because the singer sounds just like avery and or panda at points), instead coming out sounding like less than the sum of its parts.
Enjoyable either way, reminiscient of Angels of Light or lighter Swans in a certain way of how the rhythm is handled on the first song at least, except unlike Micheal Gira's songwriting style, some of the songs build to a conclusion that doesn't happen, partially because the dynamics are terrible. And the punchy drum sound on some songs doesn't work that well.
I think this album is probably "good" but it just seems kinda unoriginal to me. The banjo playing is fairly unique (or at least uncommon) alongside the synth textural stuff in the background, especially on the closer.
2.5+

Accel - Hauschka - What If
Meminalism
2.5
cont.
>>
>>74929263
Nat - Something Like Elvis - Cigarette Smoke Phantom
The only one of the RYM genres I really think this classifies as is psychedelic rock.
I'm not exactly sure what I expected from this album, but it wasn't this, and I didn't think they did 'this' very well.
2.5-

Borzoi - Set Fire To The Flames - Sings Reign Rebuilder
Even if I hadn't known that they were labelmates to Godspeed, the similarities are obvious enough to make the comparison. Moya plays similar progressions to his Godspeed work, and so do the other members of Godspeed or the general constellation players.
You could call this album an expansion to the concepts on F#A#. That might be a bit reductive, but the two records are inseperably likeminded in tone and composition, although Elfrim's crescendo anthems make less of an appearance than their debut on F#, probably because Elfrim was too busy with Silver Mt Zion and Fly Pan Am, I guess, to be involved with yet another constellation experimental rock group besides Godspeed.
And oh yeah, the music is good too, considerably more "out there" than most Godspeed songs, and with the same high quality of sampling.
3.0-

Darklands - Spacemen 3 - Perfect Perscription (taken from his rym)
I don't what to say other than I expected something a bit more "neo" in terms of approach to psychedelic rock, got some pretty straight pink floyd-ish sounding songs alongside drony space ones.
I like Lou Reed's "Street Hassle" but I didn't really like their variations on its themes in track 3. The singing is also not something I enjoy.
2.5+

Next round restriction: playful/uplifting/similar meaning descriptor on rym, no sad musics pretty much, it doesn't even necessarily have to have the rym thing
Nat tentatively advances but will be replaced if/when darklands comes back before I finish this goddamn thing
because of the awkward way I did this accel and nat recc again but don't necessarily move forward
mark and and letov tiebreak with 1 (one) song

I'm not one to compare music with weather changes, although the sudden temperature drop and low pressure have brought a cloud canopy ripe for wrapping oneself up in and slipping on this cosy debut. Electronic drones and submerged percussion beats give a womby feel throughout, and the narcoleptic crooning that Owens' drapes across a selection of tracks are rather maternal too. Fans of East India Youth's synthesis of pop songwriting and more leftfield electronic styles will probably find something to enjoy here, although the comparatively hard-edged drum machines and motoric synth leads on the album's second half drain the illusion and betray an early Crystal Castles influence. Particularly interesting are the use of instruments drawn from Hindustani music - tabla carrying a riverine beat on opener 'S.O', mirrored by the use of a tanpura drone to close out the album. And whilst Owens may not have the strongest voice, she knows what to do with what she has to make a warm, dreamy, pop-tinged album good for curling up for on an unexpectedly cold day.

kinda what I was saying, but I never really fricked with hypna pop or blackgaze

emo rap is cool to me but it was done better like 20 years ago so who cares?

Blackgaze was at least funny to make fun of. The entire genre produced one good song and it was the very first song on the only album from that genre that people care about. sun bat her was my entry into much better metal anyways so I have it to thank for that.

/new/ is what did it. It started a current events discussion board and turned into a slightly more focused version of /pol/ by the end of its life. Because he didn't like how 4chan was becoming involved in far right shit, he killed it off, but it just caused everything to spread - this is when /v/'s opinion on real world affairs went from making jokes about Obama and attacking Scientology to becoming an actively "anti-SJW" board and /tv/ got the obsession with black people. moot then brought in /pol/ in an attempt to contain all the political shitflinging but it was still too late. He also tried to kill off /r9k/, which resulted in the alpha Chad vs beta virgin shit getting all over the place.

Then the civil war in Ukraine happened and Russians and Ukrainians turned parts of the website into a shitposting warground (most of Ukraine is rangebanned to this day), which got him some negative attention on top of inspiring people on /pol/ to take a more active role in real world affairs.

Then the Fappening happened and moot got into a shitload of legal trouble, he nearly got destroyed in the courts.

Then Gamergate, where /v/ and /pol/ caused permanent damage to the gaming industry (in the exact opposite way they wanted) and cemented /pol/ as a media boogeyman for anything right wing related. With all of this, he threw in the towel and gave the website to the world's shadiest Japanese man.

Imagine founding a silly anime imageboard and seeing it become an infamous internet trolling website then a mainstream political hotspot.
>>
>>74939517
gamergate was so profoundly depressing to watch slowly begin. this website is bad. i need to leave. i really would be gone by now if daily wasn't around.

>>74939517

Trondheim Jazz Orchestra - In The End His Voice Will Be The Sound Of Paper
>avant-folk

I think I might need to give this one another listen, because I don’t really think I “got it” at all (which isn’t something I find myself saying about very many albums these days). The compositions on this album are incredibly abstract and freeform, aside from a few moments not really having much in the way of constant rhythm or melody. Most of the time, the group are experimenting with really esoteric textures, usually recording the sounds of their instruments when played the “wrong” way (frantically strumming an acoustic guitar while all the strings are muted, gliding a bow over a violin strings capturing only high pitched squeaks, etc). Even the vocals, provided by artpop singer Jenny Hval, are usually extremely sparse and disconnected from the instrumental backing. Again, I’d have to listen again to figure out what she’s saying and how it might connect with the rest of the album.

Overall, this was a pretty opaque listen. I can’t say it gave me much in the way of excitement or wonder, but it did confuse me a fair amount! Maybe that’s what it’s going for? I’ll be revisiting this album soon so I might change my score later.

>Moritz Von Oswald Trio - Fetch
>Ambient Dub, Minimal Techno
Really good album art choice for this. It's like the cameras are observing a bizarre creature or display; the rigid pace of Jam and its sound spurts reflect that. Of course, it comes at the cost of coming off as meandering, at 17 minutes in length. The transition to Dark is seamless, and at this point sounds a lot like trip hop. Club brings it back to pace, but it still didn't feel like it was progressing at all, unlike Yangissa.

6/10

>Sheena Ringo - Kalk Samen Kuri no Hana
>Weeb Art Pop/Rock
When their anime openings are already staffed with an orchestra, I shouldn't have been surprised to see the credits on an Japanese ART rock album. I'm not going to bother with picking out every single detail on this, but Japan hasn't disappointed me with its extravagant pop.

7/10

>/f - The Fourth bully
>Glitch, Free Improv
Turning up my volume to hear the second track while it's playing was a bad idea
But when I got to 07.27_ce, wow. Every time I see the genre "glitch" I expect noisy wank, but it's really like messy IDM. So much stuff to enjoy, from the screaming strings in the 6th track and the swelling pseudo-orchestra of girl who has led a sheltered life I, the gentle chimes behind 11+14+15 or the growth of the tenth track. Both pierenvuerl and the 12th track are monstrous, and I assume the Xtal here is related to Aphex Twin's Xtal. I can't quite place the setting for an album like this, but it all fits together.

How did these tasty messes come from some guy with tortillas on his album covers?

i don't usually listen to house albums so you're out of luck. I know even less about house than I do about techno, so it takes very little to not bore me.
this Andrés track for example feels p simple but it's fresh, it doesn't sound that safe
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2toRTEPJak4

I've been listening to a lot of Andrés and Theo Parrish lately, but looking at my track list I barely listen to house outside of them and some classics nowadays.
idk, I used to listen to a lot of pretty standard recent house music I know don't have much appreciation for. stuff like Folamour (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWBasi87dcQ) used to be my go to music and now I've grown tired of it.
