The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Echo Lane Afterschool Inc. - The April Tape
>ambient, drone

Cozy and hypnotizing! There isn’t really much happening on paper in this album, but starting with the first track it creates a pretty nice nostaligic mood just with a couple of looped melodica chords and some lo-fi musique concrete noodling in the foreground. It’s simple, but warm and atmospheric. The other two, much shorter tracks follow a similar structure, albeit with different instruments and textures. And with those sampled bird noises in the third one? It’s like the memory of warm sunny afternoon in a town you grew up in!

Had to review the new godawful Tigers Jaw album for a club at skool. Was passable emo pop punk in the worst of ways. Doubt even Tigers Jaws and huge fans of the genre would even like it.

BUT person who runs the club is cool and loves them so I gave it a 3/10 on RYM and I'm gonna give it a 5/10 for the club.

Is this how even people who are good writers (not me) become corrupt and start giving the worst shit 7.2s?

Yeah, that's awkward. I will say people here just generally have a different rating scale, and that the right thing to do for a school newspaper is adjust to the norm. The average score from my RYM friends (you guys) is ALWAYS lower than the rest of RYM. People already see 5/10 as a total pan even though it literally means average, etc. Maybe it goes back to the grading system in school where 5/10 would be an F.

great jams, but much weaker 2nd half.

>>74883001
Yeah that's what I've thought. Because people apply "school" ratings to everything (especially at a uni) it means that getting a 6/10 is near-worthless, like a D- on a test. But I've enjoyed plenty of albums I've given 3 stars on RYM. Tones of great albums I wouldn't hesitate to rec to others are sitting with that rating, they just aren't favorites.

It's a totally bullshit comparison though, since in school if you only learned half of the material then of course you failed. However, if you never use the lower half of your music reviewing scale, why even have it? Why can't you just assign letter grades instead? It makes much more sense, but shilling/need for clicks and ad revenue will always prevent it from being so.
>>
>>74883235
Good points. School grades should correct themselves to end the inflation. Go past F all the way to like T

I liked it. The best part about the album was how effective the vocals were in bolstering the album's sound and atmosphere. Robert Ashley has a real talent for vocals, and it proves that he does not need lyrics to provide a cerebral performance.

I felt as if the sound design could have been better, maybe in terms of pacing. I wouldn't have minded if this was a slow burning 1 hr+ project.

It was incredibly well made, and the recurring motif of that John Zorn song was used well. Most of the techniques that were criticized by it's detractors were also effective. The off-screen violence was disturbing, and the 4th wall-breaking moments elicited nervous laughter.

Most of my qualms lie with the film's ethos; not so much with the message, but how it was communicated. The film could have been a lot less "on the nose" at parts, and at times it felt a little patronizing.

A little side note: A couple of Haneke films I watched (The White Ribbon and Cache) had relatively non-violent premises with extremely graphic scenes that stood out from it's setting. So it was a little ironic to watch a film of his with a violent premise that shied away from showing most of the violence.

get hyped for my possible folk/blues radio show

Mark E - Works 2005 - 2009: Selected Tracks & Edits (2010)
>nu-disco, deep house

Really fun disco, through and through. Great when it sticks more towards traditional, organic disco compared to the straight-up deep house, while the combination of both these styles is where the album really shines. The best tracks here combine the sound of classic disco with the late-night, sleepy atmosphere of deep house. As Mark E doesn't particularly do plain ol' deep house that well, some track miss their mark. The majority do hit, though, and they hit hard.

3.0+

The New Blockaders - History of Nothing (2001)
>noise

Some of the most industrial noise I've ever heard, even though it doesn't particularly subscribe to the sound of the industrial genre. It doesn't move or pulse or writhe like most industrial music does, it truly does emulate the sounds of a factory. A haunted abandoned factory, sure, but a factory nonetheless. It's a really cool idea for a noise record, and it's unique in the genre because of that, but it lacks power and any real memorability. Interesting, though, and I love the parts at the end where it sounds like a gun being shot.

Yeah, good points. I've seen bits of White Ribbon, will have to check out more.

About that stated aim of the film, I think that's always something you have to take with a grain of salt. Directors don't dictate meaning like they think they do, and people like to point out how it's guilty of what it condemns, express anger about it being essentially a "fuck you" to a paying audience, etc.

And then on the other hand, all the outraged viewers debating it don't realize that that validates some intention.

What a mindfuck that it's a punishment to watch and that that's the takeaway.

I hate all neo-medieval folk I've ever heard, so I went into this with somewhat low expectations. While the folkier tracks here do tend to be my least favorite, the prog/rock here is absolutely incredible. I've really never heard anything quite like it, it draws so much from typical prog traditions while still sounding entirely singular and unique. That's a pretty succint description of the whole album, really. Great stuff.

Fall of Saigon - s/t
Sweet but cool and distanced stuff. Couple songs consisting of just looped percussion/synths + guitar but varied atmospherically, 2 vocalists with cute french accents and it all fits together perfectly.

Olga Bell - Tempo
Wow the first 3 tracks are great. A production style that I'm a big fan of and vocal with just the right amount of weird. There's a couple duds later ("AM I FUCKIN USELESS?") and dull moments when Olga takes a break but it's fine.

WWO - We Własnej Osobie
Only for people interested in polish rap and only a couple essential & very influential tracks. The rest is disposable

Black Magic - Freedom
Great funky bassline, alright soulful vocals. The dubs aren't much to talk about. Preceded by a silly intro, eh.

Magnum - On a Storyteller's Night (1985)
>AOR, hard rock

I expected nothing from this, and my expectations were pretty much met. There's nothing offensively bad about this, it's just overblown, cheesy, AM radio-ready hard rock. In lacking anything offensively bad, it's just offensively mediocre through and through. The vocals are nothing special, the guitars are lackluster, the only real redeeming quality is the pounding bass, mainly because it's the only thing that's actually going on in the music.

Plug - Drum 'n' Bass for Papa (1996)
>drum and bass

Drum and bass is a genre that's simply not suited for albums. Long-form drum and bass/jungle mixtapes and DJ mixes work when they hit hard (Jungle Spliff), something this simply doesn't do. Vibert occasionally taps into a primal, banging sound that he stays away from far too often, opting instead for some vaguely jazzy soundscaping moments that do absolutely nothing. This guy's talented, something that's not explained very well here.

The Books - The Way Out
>plunderphonics, glitch pop

This was a real treat to listen to. The production on this album is just so insanely good, perfectly combining the organic (acoustic guitars and drums), the analogue (old voice and radio samples), and the digital (looping textures and buzzing electronics) into catchy tracks that probably sound nothing like you’ve heard before. Tracks like “The Story Of Hip Hop” and “A Cold Freezin’ Night” have some really bangin’ beats but theyre also filled to the brim with little sounds, samples, and details that you can really get lost in.
The only tracks on here I wasn’t completely in love with were the slower, more straightforward folk songs like “Face Translator” and “We Bought The Flood”. However, I know that it usually takes me a couple listens to get a grasp on lyrics and song structure, so I have no doubt that the whole album will grow on me over time! I’ll definitely be listening to this album a lot more to fully process everything that’s going on.

In the middle of a move - shit is always more stressful than I expect ugh. Anyway, quick updates.

Orange Juice was the biggest surprise on here - lots of 70s/80s elements I'm not usually a fan of but they blend in such a brilliant way. Super catchy too.

The stupid fucking bread project I found on RYM might be the worst EP I've ever heard. It's intentionally bad but that somehow makes it even more awful. It's only 14 minutes but it feels like it's at least 40. Morbid curiosity really got the best of me.

Mercyful Fate might be some peoples' cup of tea but I thought it was absolutely atrocious. One of the worst vocal performances I think I've ever heard. Seriously - why was this style so popular and how did this singer manage to make it so incredibly terrible? The music is pretty typical hard rock/early metal as far as I can tell but I couldn't get past the vocals t b h.

Obscured By Clouds is up there with my favorite Floyd albums already, has this super smooth guitar tone and improv feel I just love. Probably my favorite era from the band too with AHM and Meddle.

Griots had such an amazing blend of noise/experimental beats and almost shoegaze influence. Not in a cloud rap way though. One of the most unique hip-hop projects I've stumbled upon.

Easter Everywhere was pretty by the books psych but there's this jug being played in the background that absolutely fucks with the... dynamic of the thing? Every song on the album sounds wobbly, a little off and just on the verge of disintegration (especially "Earthquake"... of course) and I love it. Definitely growing on me in the brief time I've heard it.

I think I appreciate Waits' later material but his early stuff has clicked with me way more. His experimental albums are fascinating but too grating imo so it's a relief to hear another as bluesy as this one. Something oddly soothing about this even though it's depressing. Lots of corny elements but Waits pulls it off so well.

Anyway AMA

well on a computer i don't think it makes a huge difference cuz u can just get Adblock and listen to music out of tabs anyway. but without those features on mobile devices, it makes listening to music through YouTube basically pointless.
i only used it cuz i had it through google play music when I had an android phone, and I like to check YouTube and streaming for an album before I go to slsk, so I just got rly used to it. but now, it's so different without it, and the price per month for those two simple features is just absurd.

>>74887634
Looks good. You can replace that Yarn album with this one if you want something very different, Verbna Nedilya is very similar to the first albmu

New Casper is more bold, fun, interesting and emotional than any english language rap album released this year (that I'm aware of), y'all got no idea what you're missing out on.

But mostly i'm just glad it wasn't a huge letdown after the delay and the lame indie folk arrangements on his last desu.

>Ensemble Dastan & Salar Aghili - The Endless Ocean
That second track alone is one of the best things ever, but the whole thing fails to build the right atmosphere feeling repetitive at times.

Also, calling for Letov to come and tell me the name of his picks since I can't read emoji

I love this.

>ゑでぃまぁこん [Eddie Marcon] - 輝く墓標 (Shining on Graveposts) (2005)

I'm constantly coming back to this one these days, and I'm reaching for the reason why or a description of precisely what it sounds like. A reviewer here is onto something with a metaphor about being submerged underwater with only your mouth sticking out.

Oddly specific but it describes the sound well. Psychedelic folk will work as a genre tag, which can already realistically mean a variety of things, but most notably, it's a Japanese woman singing gently over a plucked acoustic guitar. It should be telling that this is at the forefront and one might not even notice a full band with the vague echo of sparse percussion and occasionally some piano backing as well, often with some slight and muddled studio tinkering somewhere in the mix. It's all on the lounge/jazzier side than any other sound, and some intricate production and arrangement should place this somewhat outside the realm of folk, as it subtly hints at dread underneath the gentle and pleasant exterior with some ever-so-slightly off-putting chord progressions combined with ethereal vocals.
8.5/10
