Most guitars that aren't absolute bottom-barrel models from Gibson, especially if you're willing to go used. Seriously, $500 isn't that low of a budget for a good electric, most things you find in that range are going to be at least decent.

Mexican Fenders share a lot of parts and other features in common with American models. The biggest differences are in the pickups and the prestige of owning an American one (although either way, a Mexican is assembling it). If you just want a functional guitar and don't care that it was made across the border from the US plant, MIM Fenders are perfectly fine.

Once you start to get gud you can't put it down I somehow completely passed the time from 12am-2pm playing guitar. I had the time to do it for that long yesterday and it was nice. You need a couple of hours of practice stop viewing it as a schedule and think of it as you're the only person who's going to further yourself getting better and every minute is an important minute. You can't play anything by ear yet because you don't have enough association with the sound of notes I listen to music a lot and I'm playing a good chunk of my time so its starting to feel more natural like when you pick up a video game controller.

Rics are cool, but I feel like their build Quality can waver from time to time. I'd say try some locally if you can, and if you find a good one get it. New Gibson T-Birds are absolute Garbage, stay away. You'd be better off getting a Japanese Market Greco Copy for cheaper, much better build quality and they actually look and feel like a vintage T-Bird, pic related

I picked up a telecaster for the first time yesterday. Pretty new to guitar. Only know basic acoustic chords. Messing around with a tiny bit of picking and some of the pickup settings on the guitar itself. No pedals but reverb + presence up on the amp.

Any tips?

Listened to like a minute, and while it's not my kind of music and I don't find it outstanding in anyway, the guitar playing is clean from what I've heard(clean as in solid, makes sense) there's a good firmness in the rhythm playing in the beginning (very generic though) and a confidence in bridging when the drums come in, I'm gonna summe the string is structured cohesively but formulaic and boring. Also your voice is so fucking awkward, I'm guessing you're not from America. The lyrics are subpar, but musically speaking its music, but like I said not outstanding in any way. If you're not from America please work and develop your accent so you can have a better singing voice, you'll also need to work on range and projection I'm guessing. Your voice is just weird. Try and work on expanding your mind more so you can write better lyrics also. No one except low IQ mongs will listen to it, and they would have to be programmed to. I don't think you're selling your soul anytime soon though

>>
>>74898938
I would assume mimicry of other vocalist within your range, and moving past that, to push yourself and practice often. Practice behind a piano, sing the notes on your guitar, get a pitch playing in the background(like of your room, from a computer), sing that pitch, and try to change your voice as you do, record yourself doing it. Really be self critical. Examine other music. but I'm not you, you like your voice and I wish I had that self confidence personally, don't be too insulted by my words, you made some music and I'm guessing you love doing it and that's what important. But you obviously do what inpurt so I'd say find your voice, you sound OKAY at some points but then just have this weird throaty(?) tone. Cartoonish. I'm no vocal coach or anything though.

Twin + Drive pedal = god tier clean channel, and a great drive/distortion channel that can be tailor-made to fit your taste, limited only by the thousands of distortion pedals out there. Also delivers effects with greater clarity than any Marshall.
Marshall = God tier drive channel/brown with shit tier cleans aside from a JTM45, which is still shitty conpared to basically any blackface. Modulation effects sound muddy in general.

Marshall cleans at their best are 2203/2204 and JTM through the low input, and then you're eating into your drive/brown and it still isn't as good as a Blackface and the headroom and bass response isn't there.
I mean if you want the best of both worlds get a 1st gen modded 5150 II with a re-bias and custom output transformer -- still not as clean as a Fender, but it's better than even the glassiest Marshall with a 800-series crunch.
>>
>>74900778
The brown sound: 92 octaves below the lowest Eb.
>>
>>74900778
I'm not sure how old you are or how long you've been playing guitar, but typically the more agressive modern Marshall overdrive from JCM-series D/TSL-series and boosted SLP-series is referring to "brown sound" that was characterized from the late 70s on.
>>
any tips on bending an output jack contact back into place, cable keeps coming loose intermittently while playing
>>
>>74900954
I agree that he's an idiot who deserves an erroneous South Park reference in response, but I think a lot of people would consider earlier Marshalls capable of producing a brown sound.

EVH, who as I'm to understand it popularised the term, used undervoltaged 1959s to create his brown sound.
>>
>>74900972
Just buy a new jack, they're like fifty cents.

Or you could get a fancy one for a few dollars.
>>
>>74901044
this is more me wanting to get a quick fix for now until it arrives in the post.

dont know whether to try heating it up a bit since i'm not finding it easy to bend it the right way
>>
>>74901027
They do.
EVH did this with SLPs, and a cranked TS produces a saturation on-par with JCM style amps that are both considered "brown."
It was the "second coming" in terms of Marshall drive before hogh gain preamp transformers became a thing as you know, but I'm not sure why I'm telling you this, you're knowledgeable.
>>
>>74901106
Edit:
>A cranked TS in front of a traditional Marshall.
>>
>>74901106
At this point I have to admit that I'm extremely impaired and missed the 'boosted SLP-series' part of your post the first time around.
>>
>>74901165
It's okay. It's nice to talk to someone in this shithole that knows something instead of people championing amp brands without even knowing how their sound evolved or why. Cheers anon.
>>
>>74901210
Nice one, dude. Now to serenade the neighbours by turning my JVM up to 7.

>>74901271
I find it suspicious that you've switched from not knowing what 'brown' means in the context of guitar tone to opining about the correct usage of the term.
>>
/gg/, say I've been learning how to play on a shitty acoustic and now I want to upgrade. The thing is, I don't have a very good job, and even if I did, my country's wages aren't very impressive (minimum wage is around 80 bucks on paper, and even less when it comes to facts). Buying even a somewhat decent budget guitar like a Squier would put a noticeable strain on my wallet (and that's not counting amp and other fancy stuff).
Lately I've been interested in bass. I have never played bass, never even saw one in person, but now I'm considering picking one up. Should I go through with it or should I stick with guitars? I probably won't be able to buy another for a long time.
>>
>>74901271
You're retarded then, because it's the sound that characterized the 80s. Say what you want about Ed, but that nigga' had unbelievable tone and guitar-making knowledge -- even modern Fender Wolfgangs shit all over other Fenders and Gibsons, Ed was integral to the jump to Marshall providing higher gain.
Also thats why I said drive/brown; "drive" alluding to classic Marshall tones and "brown" alluding to boosted classic tones as well as DSL/JCM "2nd era" sounds.
>>
>>74887545
hey /gg/, I'm interested in trying out playing at an open mic at a bar near where I live, but I need a loud enough amp to do that. Anyone have any recommendations for a good giggable amp under $500? I won't be going for tones heavier than how heavy typical indie/alternative music tends to be.
>>
>>74901324
Buy a Squier guitar and stick with it. Being distracted kills talent.
>>
>>74901382
Bassbreaker or Katana. Seriously.
>>
>>74901306
>JVM.
How is it good anon?
The TSL series was a bit underwhelming. Do they offer a low-wattage combo?
>>
>>74901324
i'd say definitely buy a better guitar rather than a bass. Bass is easier to pick up after 6 string than the other way round, you can just play basslines on your 6 string if you need a fix
>>
>>74901383
>>74901419
Cheers.
>>
>>74901324
i know that feel man, a squier bullet is like a minimum wage here.
if its an electric that you want to upgrade to, id say you'll be fine upgrading to a cheap used one, youll just have to test them before buying to see if it stays in tune. from that a cheap pickup upgrade after some time will make it sound pretty decent.
if its a better acoustic that youre wanting, the decent ones are still a bit cheaper than a squier bullet, and you still can get an entry level bass that at least stays in tune.
>>
>>74901383
tfw been distracted with the computer 24/7 for years
>>
>>74901415
I have to say that I really enjoyed the abrasive sound of the Crunch channel on the TSL (I did pick one up as it was dirt cheap). But yes, it definitely wasn't everyone's cup of tea.

I would argue that the JVM is the best-sounding Marshall since the 800 series.
What it's really meant to be is a jack-of-all-trades of the various eras of the company. If you want a great-sounding amp that does most of the Marshall sounds, get one. If you want a fantastic-sounding amp that only does the 800 sound, get an 800.
Oh yes, and the JVM has a ridiculous amount of gain available if you want it. I hear a lot of metal guys like them.

As expected, there's a 50W combo version of the JVM (I have the 100W combo), but I don't know of any lower-power options. The 100W TSL combo has a 25W mode.

>>74901488

>>74901538
Exactly.

>>
>>74901324
Eat ramen (or borscht) for a while until you can afford it.
>>
>>74901613
The TSL wasn't all bad, but it didn't get the BROWNS of a DSL or 800. I never owned a 900, but I've head mixed reviews.
I ask because although I'm a "Blackface guy", I have a rehearsal space in my home, and the couple Fenders I own and single-channel Marshalls aren't really the tops for a jam where someone is jist jumping in and needs somenhigh saturation without a board or cranking the amp, and a multi-channel Marshall might be the ticket.

The only other amp that caught my eye was of course a Fender 5150, but I will now investigate the JVM to see how it compares.

Thanks anon, I will definitely look into it.
>>
>>74901843
Nice one. Here's the tl;dr version, as I see it:

>800 and prior
Legendary.
>900
Not good.
>TSL
If it's your thing (biased here). Otherwise... slightly less not good.
>DSL
Good.
>JCM
Great. Flexible, too.

There's something new coming out soon, probably next year. I don't think that Marshall are brave enough to make their next flagship a modelling amp, but given how good Kempers are, and how the JVM initiated moving towards ultra-flexible, it would be the logical move.
>>
>>74901798
I'm underweight by ~15 kg as it is, I don't think going on a diet is a good idea. I think I'll stick with just a guitar.
>>
>>74901932
My bad: replace 'JCM' with 'JVM'.
>>
>>74901726
This shit has literally come up in conversation with amp nuts over the years with me. It's just an anecdote, but the fact that MY BOY right here >>74901613 knew exactly what I was talking about just outs you as a fucking retard.
What's in your current amp wheelhouse anon? I'm curious.
Me? Just a Twin Reverb 15 Custom, and a handmade BB clone. I had a Mesa RK, but sold it literally the other night.
>>
>>74901932
That's pretty much what I figured for the 800/900/SLP/DSL/TSL. I'll try the JVM and see how it works out.
I'm also in the same pickle with modelling too, even Fripp is on board and double blinds are now impossible to discern for even seasoned amp nuts -- thst might be the ticket too. I have no problems dumping amps for a Kempler/Bias once the price is more enticing.
>>
>>74902025
Show you an example? Use Google. You will literally find a shit-ton of articles about brown sound, how it came to be, what it is, etc.
Are you that retarded that you need me to spoonfeed you?
>>
>>74902102
To be honest, I've essentially accepted that I'll keep my current valve amps for sentimental value, but that I'll buy a modeller (the best one available) when there's a decent selection to choose from - say ten years' time.
>>
>>74902128
Wat?
>>
>>74902144
I'm just waiting for the price to drop honestly. I'll hang on to the two amps I have now too... But I don't think it will be 10 years before something comes out that's indistinguishable from valves -- even when I remain doubtful about high-gain amp models in side-by-side shootouts.
>>
>>74901932
you forgot to mention 900s arent fully tube amps. this puts them another step below the other marshalls.
>>
>>74901948
>tfw using American idioms with foreigners
>>
>>74902249
I agree, I think they're already indistinguishable - I just want to see the technology come out of its infancy and be able to choose from a range of models.

The number of knobs on the Kemper, for example, is daft - I'd rather wait for something more well-thought-out.
>>
>>74902297
Google. I told you.
It's literally not my fault you're too ignorant to use the term. Go ahead, keep outing yourself as a fucking scrub. The only argument I'm seeing is "you must sink to my low level of knowledge" because you're literally too stupid to connecr dots.
>>
>>74902339
I've borrowed a Bias for the last little bit, and although it's apparently not as good as the Kempler, it was still superb.
Give it time.
