I don't know why this is surprising to you. The last "real" genres to form (black metal, sludge/stoner metal, industrial metal) all started in the nineties, over twenty years ago. And even then, that stuff was an evolution of earlier music. Black metal pioneers wedded neoclassical tremolo riffs to death metal brutality, and bands like Kyuss and Sleep revived the psychedelic jams of the late '60s. At the end of the day nothing in art is truly new, everyone takes from somewhere. Enjoy the things that are good and don't worry too much about what's cutting edge or not.
