The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Disclosure - Settle
The music is very mediocre though I suppose there is a somewhat smart choice of guest vocals, which are decent contributors to some songs ("White Noise", "Voices"), sometimes being basically the only good thing about a song ("Latch", "Help Me Lose My Mind"). Some songs with samples instead of guest vocals overdo the repetitiveness to the point it's irritating ("Grab Her", "When A Fire Starts To Burn"), the rest of the album is pretty much average without anything outstanding.

Esplendor Geométrico - Sheikh Aljama
From the first track I expected it to be Esplendor Geométrico heading into Muslimgauze direction, but the arab vibe is actually barely apparent there. Some tracks are standing out for me ("Tráfica", "Descontrol", "Min Dahul", "Animatriz"), the rest were easy forgettable. I guess a good feature about the piece is that though the music is repetitive, at least it's not dragged for too long.

New Order - Power, Corruption & Lies
First two tracks are too much Joy Division for me, but it gets better from there, the synth direction was a good one to take for them. Still, only a couple of really catchy tracks for me on the album ("The Village", "Your Silent Face").

Tried the following;

>Eddy Current Suppression Ring - Primary Colours. This is a brilliant garage rock/ post-punk album that bears slight resemblance to The Feelies given the emphasis on percussion though is slightly less unique in sound. On the whole though great and Brendon Suppression's vocals come feature great eccentricity throughout.
>Eddy Current Suppression Ring - s/t. Perhaps even better than Primary Colours, slightly harsher and energetic even if its not as polished.
>Total Control - Typical System. This leans more towards the more electronic end of the post-punk spectrum being more along the lines of synthpunk. I didn't enjoy it as much as Primary Colours though the lighter more atmospheric tracks such as "Liberal Party" and "Hunter" granted some enjoyment. Wasn't too keen on this overall.

I'm finally carrying on with this chart

>Harmonia - Deluxe
Still not really impressed with these guys desu. It's a bit more focused than Musik von Harmonia but it isn't really a huge improvement. Some of the synth work on side A is great at times but overall amounts to little and side B is just uneven as fuck, though Monza was a nice change of pace. I definitely appreciate it for its influence on electronic music, but there's better kraut electronic out there.
2

>Cluster - Zuckerzeit
This just seems like a failed attempt at italo disco to me. It's just more space-y electronic but this time condensed into mostly 3-4 minute songs. Some of these tracks have some good ideas, Fotschi Tong and Marzipan have great melodies in particular. However, as an album it feels disjointed, almost like snippets were cut from longer pieces and then just given a title and put on here.
2

also changed some scores
>>
>>74745590
Those are some harsh scores. I guess you just don't really like the electronic side of krautrock.

hey /daily/.

i really like some doom/sludge metal, but i want to branch out and find more artists. unfortunately i really am not a fan of stuff that's really progressive, atmoshit, or excessively melodic. i just want some really twisted, gross, heavy doom. not too bluesy or reverb-drenched.

i like sunn, the body, and toadliquor.

FOUR PEOPLE REMAINING
++++++++++++++++++++++

good friend rodriguez:
>Mountain Goats - Luna
Evolution of clearly-spoken singers:
Owl City -> Death Cab for Cutie -> Mountain Goats
Not as different as I expected it to be from Goths, and this song seems to be like a reemergence of conflict in the narrative of this album.

trip up:
>rhucle - wading birds
when the album art is a stock image of a playground you know it's gotta be good
For real, this is some nice comfy shit.

Letov:
>Adam Strug i Kwadrofonik - Czemu tak rychło, Panie (Requiem ludowe)
Not a huge fan of the vocals. While the instrumentation reminds me of minimalist composers (or Peter Broderick), it wasn't particularly stirring. Like the high-fidelity worked against it.

nyarlathot:
>Jessica Pratt - Back, Baby
Initial reaction: repulsion
After relistening: less repulsed but it's staler than your last recc
It's enough for me to enjoy more than Kanzler's just barely.

=============

Kanzler:
>Ma Russie - Shortparis
I'm getting early 2000's vibes from this. Obviously, it's produced better, but this didn't stand out at any point. Would have passed if it was earlier in the rounds, sorry.

>Queens of the Stone Age – Villains

I feared the worst because of Ronson, but it turned out to be fine. Maybe even great?!
Homme goes for swing rather than grit and delivers a very danceable rock record.

To achieve the effect, Ronson toned down the guitars and sprinkled a bunch of synths here and there. The latter seemed to be more noticeable for me than usual. The record honestly sounds like a terrible idea but it works somehow. It is obviously nowhere near what Rated R, Songs For The Deaf or even Like Clockwork was.

The record starts with just straight forward, often repetitive riffs with lots of energy. “Feet Don’t Fail Me Now” has a sweet riff and a very cool bridge with some nice guitar interplay. The rhythmic repetition reappears on the following “The Way You Used To”. This one is probably my least favorite, probably because it is just waaaay too straightforward for current day Homme and those goddamn claps annoy me. Whatever man. It’s fun to jump around to but I would expect slightly more after …Like Clockwork. Probably listener’s error.

“Domesticated Animals” gets a slight craze infusion. Sections of the track are introduced slightly unconventionally (even though it has fairly standard verse-chorus structure) with small parodying riffs appearing here and there, courtesy of both guitars and synths. The mix is spaceous with all the instruments appearing in the depths of the mix and up-front. Starting from this track, I had a sense of relief that Ronson didn’t butcher it as I expected. Key moment of the track is probably the appearance of strings. Where the fuck did that come from? Nice touch to compliment the hammering guitars. The way the strings close off and transition into the following track is just great.

“Fortress” is fantastic. My top 3 track on the album. The songwriting is great and the organic synth-guitars relationship bring out the best in the track. The lyrics are somewhat reminiscent of the …Like Clockwork themes, pushing harder on personal feelings and emotional walls that need to eventually be broken. I can relate to this topic for one reason or another, so extra points for impact.

“Head Like A Haunted House” returns back into the dance swing mode with heavy basslines pushing the track into the next gear. To me it sounds like a more standard QOTSA track with the tempo sped up and the guitar grit off. Bad thing? Not really. Just mindless dancing excursion. Good switch from the moodiness of the previous track. “Un-Reborn Again” sort of shares the standard QOTSA vibes with some grit in the guitars. While the grit is welcome, I feel like it is one of the weaker tracks on here. Then again it does have traces of the more upbeat tracks on …Like Clockwork, so maybe I will dig it more upon return.

The real manipulative love is thrown into a slow-ish track “Hideaway” where everyone seems to hide from this loving deviant. The instrumental is pretty much entirely riff-carcassed with Homme cooing softly, almost like a seduction trap. The smoothness of this track is then replaced by an immediate barrage of riffs. “The Evil Has Landed” is six and a half minutes of guitar acrobatics from the guys. The drums on this one sound flat as fuck but there is a certain punch from them regardless, especially with the rapid snare shots. In the end it turns into a 2 chord highway jingle.

The track I was expecting the most on here was the closer. “Villains Of Circumstance” was played by Josh during one of his solo gigs a long while ago and I LOVED IT. It was an acoustic ballad that was transformed into a somber and somewhat sad rock track. The lyrics have changed from the original version. They still don’t click with me as much, but that is obvious. The choruses turn a bit more pacey in contrast to the heavy bass-line slide fueled verses. Homme gives off a great vocal performance on here too. The finale of the track is brand new with a stammering rock bit that closes off the album.

I definitely liked it way more than I expected. Mark Ronson was a red flag but they managed to keep it “rock n roll” with a lot of swing to it while also keeping some of the darker sound elements from …Like Clockwork. Giving it a 7+ for now. Josh Homme is pretty much single-handedly keeping the mainstream rock wave alive.

7+/10

Hi /daily/!

Going back home for the weekend to encounter DEEEEPREEEESSSIIIOOOOOONNNNNN as Jandek would sing but I'm buying an electric piano or a synth tomorrow, so things aren't that bad.

I like the new QOTSA record. Anyone else liked it?

the new taylor swift song made me want to eat glass
hopefully the new new taylor will eventually make a passable song

cantigas de santa maria was excellent, a bit over my head but enjoyable through and through, anthony braxton is always excellent, the circulasione totale orchestra album was fucking long and dragged so god damned much especially considering the final piece is the best part and should have been the entirety of the album

Fellas, I'm trying to do a mixtape with songs about "cheering up and standing tall against the odds of bad times" for a friend who hasn't feeling very well lately, any suggestions that aren't saccharine radio pop?

(i mean srsly all the great songs are depressing af)
