Dead again edition

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

This is a good album, but is so childish.Really is like if some group of children decided to make an album. And this group of children are feeling the same exact feel:love and happiness. And they express that emotions with the one thing that children love most:Noise. Minimalist, childish, noisey, unheardable vocals, happy, dreamy, lovely.

Portals was a pleasant surprise. It's poppy, but not so much as to detract from it's sincerity. It's also dense as hell, with it's busy production that exudes this out-doorsy vibe to it. In other words: the atmosphere was well wrought.

I already did a (shitty) thought on Lull. It's finely crafted drone/ambient, but it meanders in mediocrity.

>Enter Shikari - Take to the Skies
The intro was interesting but it went downhill from there, maybe Today Won't Go Down in Histoy stands out a little but that's just because of how boring the rest is, nothing really happened in the 52 minutes of this.
4

>A Silver Mt. Zion - 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons
The beginning was interesting and made me think this would be something like Natural Snow Buildings but it's just alternative rock going for longer than needed because it has nice instrumentation, and that's not how it works.

MIXTAPE TOURNAMENT UPDATE

flyicwiz
made me a mix of punk music
which was solid! but not one of the themes he had to pick from
it also included a song that Benji included on a mix for me last summer: damaged goods by gang of four
I still don't think it's super special. why does /daily/ like them so much?
cool artwork pick though.
good work wizzy, but s gets to advance. thank you very much for playing!!!!

darklands made me a mix of love songs
and it's fucking stellar. 13 by big star, a song I loved already after hearing a sondre lerche cover of it, a really excellent Camera Obscura track, the cure, otis redding, sam cooke, and an AMAZING closer by charles bradley, changes. the artwork you picked is really cool too!!! I like it a lot, I like paintings like this. thanks for the killer mix.

final round guidelines:
tape must be between 1 and 2 hours
cover art must be your favorite work of art
and music must fit one of these themes:
autumn
busy at work
under the influence
optimistic

here's some "reviews"
Agitation Free - Malesch
3.5-

Slayer - Reign In Blood
Slayer's chromatic, dissonant riffs and solos would inspire a lot of death metal bands that did it better than them in many instances.
3.0+

Hella - Church Gone Wild / Chirpin Hard
If Twin Infinitives was Trout Mask Replica for the grunge generation, then Church Gone Wild is the equivalent for Millenials.
I couldn't """""review""""" this album without being pretentious.
3.5+

Silencer - Death - Pierce Me
If you ignore Nattramn, it's almost good.
2.5

Tool - Lateralus
Just a really solid collection of Prog Metal songs - drums, bass, guitars are all killer, and the production is stellar as well.

Harumi - Harumi (1968)
>psychedelic pop, baroque pop, pop rock

"Don't Know What I'm Gonna Do (Love Song)" is an incredible tune, the rest of the first LP is lukewarm baroque pop with incredibly, hilariously awkward vocals. The vocals try to take on a crooner, Sinatra-esque approach, and they fail miserably. Arrangements are also a bit stilted, melodies don't stick and instruments pop out as being incredibly awkward. The last two tracks are cool, if overlong. An album with them, and maybe a bit more variation, would be nice.

2.0+

Secos & Molhados - Secos & Molhados (1974)
>progressive pop, contemporary folk

Not as good as their first one, the melodies are weaker and the sense of carefree exuberance is pretty much gone. There's a really out of place glammy influence that takes over this whole album, and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. When they get back to basics though, it's very nice.

2.5+

Miracle Legion - Surprise Surprise Surprise (1987)
>jangle pop

I'm one of the few people that doesn't really like that Polaris album, so this was a pleasant surprise. I like jangle pop that has a powerful edge to it (see Teenage Fanclub), and this fits the bill perfectly. The country influence is another nice touch, this whole thing has a very lovely down-to-earth, rootsy vibe to it without ever becoming overly country-fried. Some weak tunes here and there, and I'm still not a huge jangle pop fan as a whole. Otherwise, one of the best albums I've heard in the genre.

3.0-

Nolan Porter - No Apologies (1971)
>soul

Given this album's incredibly thick Zappa connections, I expected something more out-there. What I got was one of the most standard soul albums ever. Porter's got a decent voice, but it's not a voice that can effectively carry a soul album, and the arrangements are often weak. There's a pervading sense of fun that takes over the whole record, though, and the whole thing is very nice and easy to listen to.

Joplin Rice - Nine Songs (2016)

Cute little singer/songwriter stuff. Simple to a fault, and I can't get behind the vocals, but this is a pleasant listen all the way through. Nice Elliott Smith vibes too.

Really hit jackpot with this one. It's very well made pop which I'm a sucker for, it flows really well as a record and it ends before becoming boring. The production is cool and all the melodies are so incredibly sweeet. Mark gets the second place so far.

Batushka is pretty entry level bm, surprised that it's of the lowest there. Anyway if you like Ravel I think might have said it already, but you can try this next: https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/leonidas-kavakos-peter-nagy/sonate-posthume-tzigane-impressions-denfance-sonata-no_3/
Only the first and last pieces are by Ravel but all the works are pretty similar in mood.
And I speak Spanish and English with no problem and French decently, also can handle myself with Italian but mostly just spoken from being a month in Italy. I want to achieve fluency in the last two and then keep learning other ones.

Peter Broderick you dumbass, why couldn't you find a bigger bass section for this. I get that the little amount of experience in the chorus is supposed to make it more "organic" but album doesn't have any lower singers to weigh it down.

The Machinefabriek remix on this is alright, but what you'd expect for turning a choir into ambient music.

Mount Eerie - "Singers" (2005)
>singer/songwriter, indie folk, lo-fi indie

There are some maximalist, full-bodied sections of both The Glow Pt. 2 and Mount Eerie, yet this is the only release of Elverum's I'd actually call upbeat. Even with such upbeat titles as "Ut Oh! It's Mourningtime Again" and "I Can't Believe You Actually Died", some of the most melodic, jaunty songwriting of Elverum's career is on display here, something that's heightened by the choral aspect here. The chorus really isn't that great, mostly off-pitch with some very irritating screams here and there. They do help the upbeat jauntiness most of the tracks have, but the best moments here are bar none when Elverum sings alone. Not the most successful experiment, but a fun one.

2.5-

Croatian Amor - The World (2013)
>ambient

Some decent textural work that goes nowhere. The tracks with a heavy emphasis on synth work fare the best, evoking images of '80s horror movies and the synth-laden scores accompanying them. The rest of the tracks seem like kind of a waste, as they stay in a much more ambient territory. The textures are still alright and all, but it's among the most dry and stock-still ambient I've ever heard, even 30 minutes is enough before it gets old.

2.0+

Hatred Surge - Deconstruct (2009)
>powerviolence

The pure emotion of anger condensed and put into an easily digestible, raucous, fun as hell powerviolence package. It sure as shit doesn't reinvent the wheel, and there's certainly better, more creative powerviolence/grindcore out there. For an enthralling, bone-shattering 20 minutes, though, you can't go wrong with this.

Telstar Drugs - Endless Straight (2014)
>post-punk, indie rock

I like this about ten times more than their LP, shoot me. Whatever I missed on their LP just clicks here. I still don't care for the vocals, but the brilliance of the guitar work is absolutely undeniable. It's not flashy at all, just perfectly lethargic and stoned, weaving itself around the carefully played drums immaculately. The last track is a tad overlong, the rest is really great.

P-Model - In a Model Room (1979)
>synth punk, new wave, zolo

I love Are We Not Men? with all my heart, so its Japanese counterpart gets me in just about the same way. I'm not too sold on the incredibly hiccuping vocals (even though I certainly do love Hirasawa's vocals with all my heart, they're just sort of off-putting here), and some of the synth tones could strip paint, but that's part of the charm. Just like it's American counterpart, this is pure nervous energy converted to song, the rhythms are jerky and the vocals are even more strained and anxious. Not to mention it's incredibly fun to listen to.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers - Damn the Torpedoes (1979)
>heartland rock, pop rock

I'm totally fine with heartland rock, but not Petty's poppy, tasteless throwback style of it. Some of the songs are alright, "Refugee" is super catchy and there are some cool progressive elements on "Louisiana Rain". Even if the songs themselves might be okay, the sterile production kills any chance they have to be anything more than vaguely catchy, and Petty's whiny vocals grate awfully. Petty's solo work still seems cool, can't say I like this, though.

it's not as good imo, but their whole discog is solid.

Have you heard Be Stiff? I almost prefer it to Are We Not Men? sometimes, though the lack of Eno production is a flaw.

Manu Dibango - Soul Makossa (1972)
>makossa, jazz-funk, jazz fusion

Easy listening jazz at its core, but it's the funkiest, most banging easy listening jazz on the planet. Everybody probably knows the title track due to its interpolation by Michael Jackson (and for being one of the first disco tracks), and it's certainly a wonderful song, but there are even better ones to be found here. "Oboso" with it's scratchy electric guitar lead, "New Bell" with its insanely catchy melody, this is hit after hit. The hits may be pretty forgettable, but hell, it's one of the most immediately enjoyable records I've ever heard.

>JLin - Free Fall EP
Some nice beats, but most miss that slight edge that she normally adds that makes her shit so much more fun than other footwork.

>Sade - Love Deluxe
She has a nice voice and this is generally pretty good, but a lot of the songs just blend together, nothing really distinctive.

>Nina Simone - Little Girl Blue
Absolutely beautiful. Simone's singing is wonderful and the jazz leading it is really really really good.

>Bobby Hutcherson - Components
Freddie Hubbard and Herbie Hancock do what you'd expect them to do and play fucking great, but the real star here is Hutcherson himself. His vibraphone and marimba playing makes this album very refreshing and distinctly different from other jazz at the time. Hubbard's playing is slightly more restrained than normal, but he's aloud to do his thing on the last few tracks, making the album progressively more 'free'.

>Bernstein - Hayden: Symphony No. 82 'The Bear' (1st of the Paris Symphonies)
This is quite horrible. It's riddled with clichés and sounds like carnival music. The strings in the second half of the second movement are the only redeemable thing here, getting my hopes up for a moment, only to be crushed again at the start of the third movement. Trite.

>Jacques Brel - Ces Gens-Là
I think Brel just isn't for me. I can appreciate some of the melodies, but I really can't see how people get something out of this without being able to understand the french.

extra:
Bedwetter - Flick Your Tongue etc.
This has some good bars, but I think illbient generally isn't really for me, though I can see the appeal.
