The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Electro-Acoustic Improvisation

Free Improvisation, usually associated with noise or drone and textures. I guess you could say it's basically improv with a greater focus on instrumental variety, conventional or not. In no way easy to get into, but here's an EAI release that I really liked recently:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YO5HeT-TNWY
Good Morning Good Night (that one album that's a meme) is another famous example. I guess I would start with something quieter and simpler before getting into "let's destroy your ears" sounds, like this:

>Various Artists - Imaginational Anthem, Vol. 8: The Private Press (2016)

A collection of uber-obscure American Primitive cuts just in case one needed a reminder that the genre exists outside the 10-or-so names that get thrown around. Of course, none here seem as skilled as the heavy hitters, but the loose nature of the "genre" allows for quite a bit of experimentation and varied inspiration, so the sound is all over the map--from more traditional folk guitar to Indian ragas accompanied by a tabla.
6.5/10

>Judee Sill - Heart Food (1973)

I do like Judee Sill a bit and can conceivably recognize her as one of the great songwriters and know that there are some deep layers here that reveal themselves over time, but how slowly and subtly it all comes. I've spent years now with her two studio albums and I can't say I've totally grasped everything going on there outside of some great arrangements, clever lyrics, and pleasant melodies. I know how thorough she must have been writing this album, but its sweetness verges on Disney soundtrack at times like near-eight-minute closer, "The Donor", until you crack its code, so to speak. She's Joni Mitchell for people with patience. I'm just going to have to spend more time.
6/10

>Randy Burns - Evening of the Magician (1968)

This is pretty great and Randy Burns nails some of the things that drew me to folk in the first place. The feeling here is palpable--he has a great ability to dictate the mood with some always-spot-on, meticulously selected melodies (all with truly perfectly paired faint orchestral arrangements in the background, mind you), if that's not too much of an abstraction to claim. It's so quaint and pleasant and never over-reaching in the same manner as some of the timeless folksingers like Seeger himself. Maybe that's some of the cultural appeal of folk music--this ability to stand outside of complexity (and time at its very best) just to make a heartfelt statement.

Getting through another film rec.

>Persona (1966)

The key here is: "Nothing."

This film has already been talked about to no end through more lenses than you could imagine, and it's hard not to project interpretations on it due to its abstract representation of the psyche. Why does it have so many debated interpretations? The most obvious answer is because of some experimental, symbol-heavy, provocative montages throughout--most notably the bookended scenes--but also because Ingmar Bergman charts into some hazy territory regarding our understanding of this thing called the ego.

That's my take on it, at least. What's concretely here is the story of a successful actress that's given up on playing characters to the point where she refuses to speak altogether. She's hospitalized under the pretense of insanity and eventually retreats to a vacation home with her nurse caretaker with whom she develops a relationship. Every critic will inevitably point to the two lead characters here as two vague sides of a single entity, which is less-than-subtly suggested throughout the film: the nurse whose name translates to "Soul" and whose own sanity is violently challenged by a nihilistic worldview, and the actress who's disillusionment has driven her to non-action.

The common projection-interpretation of this film is a compliment to how well it represents this existential dread we all experience through varying degrees and manifestations in the face of mortality and insignificance--a common theme throughout Bergman's films. I'm reminded of Ernest Hemingway's A Clean, Well-Lighted place, which ends famously with the lines "Nada y pues nada y nada y pues nada." Both writers here fill their stories with modern, disillusioned characters without desire and characters who openly self-deceive just to avoid nothingness.

You are into music because you want to make music and have that be "your purpose". But you can't. So instead you revolve you're life around analyzing the music that everyone else is making.
Other people don't care about music that much, so they just listen to whatever. This angers you.

oh yeah that post in the redpill thread
good thing people in /daily/ already make music, and I'm very slowly working on it myself

>Miss Miracle - Walk On War
>Dark Ambient
So clearly the first sounds I can interpret is reversed audio clips, which is why I was uncertain going into this album-- being that reversed audio has a lot of internet cliches attached to them. I don't think I was able to get past that on the first track, but Let Down Your Pain's second half was a more interesting step in sound collage.

I think another issue I have with much of this is how much of the sounds droop all over each other like melted ice cream, which isn't unexpected of reversed audio. As much as I like ambient, some solid, tangible sounds are good for giving the music a bit more oomph. Adding a bit of that gives something like a 40 minute drone record some flavor-- the majority of the record is sinewy and thin, with nothing to balance it out unlike Acid Memories.

I like a lot of the different sources used in the majority of this, even under the same filters-- The B-side in particular, from For Valorie, is warming on me. An Angel Gets Its Wings reminds me of Klein - Only, in a good way, and is probably my favorite track. I guess that personal bias is what's keeping me from getting on board with the rest of the album, unfortunately.

>Jorge - True Friendship
>""post-nightcore""
I'm really curious on hearing the sample sources for this, in however they've been manipulated from high-energy to space ambiance like this.

You are into shitposting because you want to make shitposts and have that be "your purpose". But you can't. So instead you revolve you're life around analyzing the society of spectacles that everyone else is living in.
Other people don't care about shitposting that much, so they just post :0 . This angers you.

big fan of how poppy this is without compromising interesting composition or dynamics - lots of the songs have really catchy, singalong melodies and chorusy choruses juxtaposed against the weird time signatures and twinkly gay mathy indie emo guitar work. this touches a lot of my musical fetishes, but does so from a different perspective from a telstar drugs or a women, and it kind of makes me want to listen to more emo, as terrible as that sounds. great stuff that scratches my feelsy indeh itch.

>Julian Wolfe - Steel Hammer
>Choral, Post-Minimalism
A real shame that this seems to have gone unnoticed by many. Wolfe takes dozens of interpretations of the famous American folk hero John Henry, and combines them into a fluctuating, mythical narration. This is most notable in "Characteristics", as the singers repeat and switch between traits of John Henry. The image of this man who overcame machine shifting as I listened was profoundly vivid; the way that stories change between word of mouth across time and places is wonderfully captured, and makes Henry's figure almost all the more imposing.

Musically, I'm reminded of Reich's operatic work, but delivered in a much more accessible, emotionally variable, and melodic fashion. Fiddles, tambourines, and handclaps are used to summon an Old America atmosphere, while still building off of the unique and progressive sound Reich is known for. I may just give this a 9 in due time.

This will be a shameful update. One more and then I'm done.

>Kronos Quartet - Kronos Quartet Performs Philip Glass (1995)

Another big case of "what do I know about modern classical music?" Kronos Quartet are about the biggest act in modern classical from what I can tell and perform some not-so-strict interpretations of music over a wide variety of genres. At his best, Philip Glass's compositions tend to appeal to this sense of wonder and magnificence--at mankind, at nature, at the cosmos, etc., hence his constant billing in projects of similar subjects--and the performance here by the Kronos Quartet really highlights that with some dynamic sheets of sound.
7/10

>The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground (1969)

It's sacrilege to say anything critical about these guys, right? There are so many points to make about how groundbreaking they were, how they changed the course of rock, etc. More power to them. I like the good songs and don't get the rest, just like plenty of other acts. Go figure. The songs on this album ditch the experimentalism of White Light/White Heat (with the exception of the nine-minute highlight, "The Murder Mystery") in lieu of a much mellower sound in the same vein as opener, "Sunday Morning", from the self-titled debut. This is clear in the straight-forward, accessible highlights of "Candy Says", "Pale Blue Eyes", and "After Hours"--all great songs with fantastically honest and plain vocal deliveries, letting the guitar shine through. At its worst, I can't help but think Lou Reed's songs like "Beginning to See the Light" were cut without even a hint of reflection, like neither the lyrics or the vocal melody had been decided before the tape started rolling.

>Kenny Knight - Crossroads (1980)

Hell, I forgot to write down my thoughts, so I'll write the review upon re-listening. Nice, pleasant country rock, nonetheless.

>Grateful Dead - Dave's Picks Volume 20: CU Events Center, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO 12/9/81 (2016)

I was on an '81 Dead kick recently, not knowing much about it, out of some curiosity. And what I found was just fine--obviously lacking the vigor and curiosity of the preceding '70s years, but not sloppy like one might expect from an '80s show. So be it. I'll say up front that the overwhelming draw here is the killer setlist. How spoiled the audience was to get such a loaded show. Take the second set for example: you'd be lucky to get any of these songs at a given show, and this lucky audience got one after another. Throw in a Bird Song and Satisfaction (I didn't even know they played this one) encore for good measure, and you've got a great release.

All that being said, does anything here stand out in particular? Well, it's totally solid and you won't find weak spots to nitpick, but I also think it's generally unremarkable as far as this band goes. Who can nitpick with a setlist like this anyway?

>ozric tentacles - pungent effulgent
my first foray into Actual Space Rock, meaning the subgenre of progressive rock with distinctly spacey themes and sounds, NOT meaning sadboy indie that sounds like space like in the cases of Duster or Spiritualized, and it surprised me quite a bit, mostly because of how downright cheesy it is, from the 80s synth sounds to the guitar soloing. only more surprising was how well that cheesiness worked; these sounds inhabit some forgotten plane of retro-space paradise, like umbrellas in your Mars Martini, or something vaguely spacey and distinctly commercial like that. the music itself is mellow, and reminds me of Can in a lot of places, in how it's content to wallow in itself and its atmosphere with only the drums and a groovy bassline to anchor it to the concept of motion. the highlight is Ayurvedic, which is pretty much a microcosm of what the album does as a whole, with a sincerely fantastic bassline and energetic drumming leading into some of the best spacey drums + bass jam stuff i've heard. despite its charm, the album's schtick wears thin as it goes on, and it loses its enjoyability by the last two tracks. really interesting release overall.

Dum Dum Girls - I Will Be (2010)
>noise pop, lo-fi indie

This sounds pretty much exactly how I expected it to sound like: simple, twee garage pop. It does this shtick better than their contemporaries like the Vivian Girls, Wavves. etc., but they can't beat the masters of the genre like Tiger Trap or Black Tambourine, and instead settle for mindlessly aping their awesome sound without the songwriting chops. I do have a total weakness for this sound, and the Dum Dum Girls pull it off with major confidence, but they don't go above and beyond their masters, or even their contemporaries.

2.0+

His Hero Is Gone - Monuments to Thieves (1997)
>crust punk

Longer songs would do this band a great service. The longer tracks here, that experiment with taking crust punk into a much more progressive direction, are the best. The shorter tracks, that show up with a single metallic theme, leave little of an impression, and get quite repetitive. These longer tracks, though, my god are they good. The production is incredible, heavy and dirgey yet still clean, and the song structures are weirdly progressive despite never letting up on the heaviness. Don't overlook this if you're into metal or punk.

3.0+

Chocolate Watch Band - The Inner Mystique (1968)
>psychedelic rock, garage rock

The garage rock style is like a lot of other bands from around this time period, in that it's very generic and far too indebted to (read: a total rip-off of) R&B and blues. The psych is really cool, though. Overly meandering, I suppose, but dense and thick in a way that a lot of psych from this time period isn't. Pretty cool stuff.

Ugly God - The Booty Tape (2017)
>trap rap, southern hip hop, comedy rap

Stupid, jokey rap that actually has some merit to it. The first track is the best thing the album has, juxtaposing some self-deprecating humor with a really wonderful verse from Ugly God coupled with some decent trap production. The joke wears thin after a while, especially since Ugly God doesn't have that many production tricks up his sleeve. It's a pretty fun time, but it's about ankle-deep, and it's not even that terribly funny. This guy could probably go places, though.

2.0+

21 Savage & Metro Boomin - Savage Mode (2016)
>trap rap, southern hip hop

Metro Boomin's beats are dark and eerie, as it 21 Savage's delivery, but even the cool aesthetic can't make up for how boring and one-note this is. 21 Savage may be one of the few rappers to actually come off as threatening as his subject manner, but he re-uses practically the same delivery on every track. Metro Boomin, despite otherwise being quite a good producer, is quite repetitive as well. This could be good, even great, but it's a failed experiment for the genre.

>Sophie - Product
This fucking bangs. Holy shit. The way they mix these dance-y melodies with the hard hitting beats is really incredible. Loads of fun, very much recommended.

>Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left
Quite similar to Pink Moon in songwriting but the strings really accentuate the songwriting and they make it that much better imo.
3/5

>Gravediggaz - 6 Feet Deep
I'm not too sure about the first few tracks but everything from 1800 Suicide on is fucking incredible. Hard-hitting beats and the storytelling in some of the tracks is beyond me.
3/5

>Richard Dawson - Peasant
I don't really know what I'm missing in this. In the first few tracks I felt that he added too many unnecessary quirks, but then the following tracks didn't have them and they felt too 'naked'. I think the songs need the quirks to not be too formulaic but I felt the ones he used didn't really work out. The melodies are amazing though and he writes good songs.
2/5

>Ashkenazy - Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 1
The piano playing was really good but somehow the orchestration was sometimes lacking.

>Ashkenazy - Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 2
I think most people would know this piece. It's absolutely amazing and Ashkenazy's playing is as good as always.
4/5

>Ashkenazy - Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 3
This really surprised me, it features a lot more variation than the previous two concertos andit can get really chaotic sometimes, but it fits the piece really well, especially when the chaos comes together again into the subtle solo piano of Ashkenazy. Outstanding.
4/5

>Laura Nyro - New York Tendaberry
Her voice is amazing. I think I need to relisten to find more variation between the songs, because I felt it was there but it kind of went over my head? Everything sounds absolutely beautiful, so I'm positive I'll get more out of it after future listens.

3/5

>Annie Gosfield - Flying Sparks & Heavy Machinery
Very interesting album. Sounds quite like you'd expect based on the title, albeit a little more drone-y, which I loved. The second track 'Puncher' even had a kind of beat going on and I was even bobbing along to some machinery because of it. Beautifully executed concept.
3/5

Listening to Jackie O Motherfucker - Liberation now, but so far it feels a lot less adventurous than their other albums I've heard, which really is a shame. Only Rachmaninov's 4th Piano Concerto and Xiu Xiu's Forget after, I'll see if I can manage those tonight.

Oh and I also made my next chart, but it's on my laptop so I'm going to try and recreate it in text and post it in a min.

宇波拓、佳村萠と秋山徹次 - ホンタテドリ (Hontatedori) (2013)
>avant-folk

Onkyo titans come together and record what might be the quietest, most precious avant-folk album in the world. All three of the artists here make pretty radical departures from what they normally do with the folk here, even though onkyo sections are still decently prominent. The onkyo here isn't the greatest, the usage of silence feels more like a crutch than an artistic statement, and it just takes away from the radically pretty folk on display here. Bossa nova influence takes over this whole thing, but it's an odd, deconstructed approach to the genre, that luckily loses none of its characteristic charm and coziness. Recommended for anyone that likes onkyo or folk.

3.0-

2Pac - All Eyez on Me (1996)
>west coast hip hop, gangsta rap

The length of this thing is laughable, honestly. It's admirable, given that it has no skits whatsoever, but around the second disc it's clear that 2Pac runs out of things to raps and the producers run out of interesting beats. The first disc is pretty great all the way through. The beats are all great, 2Pac is in top form, and it's remarkably consistent and, above all, funky as hell. The second disc starts off strong with the George Clinton-featuring "Can't C Me", and then it promptly falls off a cliff. It still stays consistent, that's for sure, but this consistency is also it's downfall. Every beat blends together, 2Pac's subject matter and flow is all pretty much the same, the entire second disc is just a total slog through and through. Keep the first disc only, and you've got a hip hop classic, but bring in the second disc and you get a bloated misfire.

Madonna - The Immaculate Collection (1990)
>dance-pop

No one can deny the pop genius of tracks like "Like a Prayer", "Into the Groove", "Vogue", etc., but there are certainly some misfires to be found here. Madonna is really not that great of a vocalist, which makes her ballad songs falter horribly. Singles such as "Like a Virgin" and "Material Girl" also seem horribly dated (as an aside, I always fill in the "Like a Surgeon" lyrics whenever I hear the original track). The best tracks are really fun, and this is worth a listen if not just to see the work of one of the undeniable queens of pop.

looks nice

here's some hipster pseud reviews

Swans - The Glowing Man
More meditative and similar to their live albums than 'To Be Kind' and more uniform than 'The Seer.'
A large focus on repeating massive resonant chords leading to repetitive and glacial chord progressions on long tracks like 'Frankie M' and 'The Glowing Man.'
The couple of shorter tracks are a bit more lyrically focused and give a little room to Gira himself besides his concept of Swans.
4.0-

Swans - Deliquescence
Opener and bulk of CD 1, 'The Knot' is a 45 minute jam with this great glissando-ish piano riff prominent throughout, along with the repetitive chords and drum patterns usually present in longer Swans songs.
In between the harmonic and driving guitar riffs on 'The Knot,' a focus is placed on the howl of the slide and tremolo arm manipulated guitars in contrast with the piano. I think this is one of nu-Swans best songs yet, easily the best one on the album.
'Deliquescing' is another new song that is both the corpse of 'The World Looks Red' and the prototype of 'The Man Who Refused To Be Unhappy.' The uncertainty of the song's identity shows through and it's not a terribly strong song compared to its counterparts.
A nice performance of 'Cloud Of Unknowing' opens CD 2. This song is a nice one for because it combines their rhythmic bassline with more harmonic, resonant parts in the latter half of the song.
The last new song 'The Man Who Refused To Be Unhappy' is a more rhythm based song with prominent vocals, somewhat in the style of TBK. It's ok.
Overall, the new song are pretty good, and the performances of older ones are great as well.

Jacob Hutto - Into the Storm. (2017)
>indie folk

Indie folk with an intense, repetitive style to it that gives off some major post-rock vibes. The lovely vocals and the intricate guitar work make up the core of this album, but the vocal overdubbing as well as the sample/tape usage is where the heart lies. Some of the longer tracks overstay their welcome and end up too repetitive, but altogether this is another really good album done by one of y'all.

Bucket Full of Teeth - I, II, III (2003)
>powerviolence, grindcore, screamo

Powerviolence and ambient, somehow a winning mix. The hardcore stuff is urgent, passionate, and angry. It does everything that good powerviolence/grindcore should do, and it does it well. The ambient isn't that special, but simply the the fact that it exists is cool enough. The fragmented short-song style doesn't work as well for these guys as it does for some other bands in this style, barring that this is great.

Just finished Einstein on the Beach! While very long and at times a little tiring, it's truly an incredibly beautiful work that paved way to further composition of the style. The way that Glass used the scalar patterns in the end with the swapping of quarter note triplets to eighth to I think sixteenth in the bass/bari-sax line is brilliant as the vocals soar above all else. It kind of feels like getting sucked into a black hole almost

Good-day /daily/, how are you all doing today? Tried the following;

>Led Zeppelin - s/t. It was okay, Stairway to Heaven was good though certainly not anything great or "best of all time", it may have been interesting for its time though it seemed very anti-climactic, was expecting some sort of Belew-like solo at the end and a ton of shredding.
>Pavement - Brighten the Corners. I was wrong to believe that they were going to drop off in quality here, in fact this might be one of my favourites of there's (though with only five studio albums its not as if there is a deluge of competition). The latter half of the album is especially fun to listen to, loved Blue Hawaiian, Passat Dream and Stereo.
>Pavement - Terror Twilight. Probably my least favourite Pavement release thus far though still great, Folk Jam offers a unique take on their brand of lo-fi that brings something fresh to the table, same goes for most of the album to be fair.

Here's a chart for modern post-punk. Listen to all of Sufjan Steven's albums, if you appreciate an artist then try all of their material for it is the only manner of determining which of their releases you like the most (personally Age of Adz is my favourite, though differs significantly from his other releases).

i started into merzbow with 1930, and that's a great album. my friend says its a great starting point for him. pulse demon is a meme, but you could still listen to it. other albums of his i see get a lot of praise would be venereology, flare gun, hybrid noisebloom, with memorial gadgets, and so on. he also has his stuff with boris, rock dream being the most popular. and of course, there's the infamous merzbox, when you're ready to take on the final boss of noise. im sure you can find a more in depth guide/flowchart somewhere on the web, but keep in mind the dude has literally hundreds of albums. hope this was some help.

>Taku Sugimoto & Moe Kamura - Live in Saritote
Extremely gentle and delicate avant-folk tunes, with clear onkyo structure. A very nice listen.
3.0
>Tayutau - Ichinichi no Naka o, Hanauta Dekimeru
The violin on this album is beautiful, especially in the longer songs. The vocals are very interesting, and overall, theres a lot to desire on this record. Again, a very nice listen.
3.0+
>Miles Davis - Get Up With It
He Loved Him Madly is more or less my definition of a perfect jazz song: slow, ambient, spacey, psychedelic. This is probably one of Davis' more underrated works. It's avant-garde in the sense that it focuses more on repetition and creating atmospheres, although there are plenty of more rhythmic songs on this record. This is close to a 4.5 for me, but we'll see on further listens. For now, I highly recommend this, if not for He Loved Him Madly alone
4.0+
>Denzel Curry - Imperial
Starts off bombastically with ULT and Gook, but slows down rather quickly for me. Overall, its a solid effort from Curry. Lots of great, aquatic beats (the Ronny J beats being my favorites), good features, and Curry definitely delivers some incredible lyricism. If every song were as hardhitting as the first two, this would be up there for one of the best trap rap projects for me. Regardless, I'm very ok with this being the #1 rated trap rap album on rym.
3.0+
>Untrance - Deleted Seniors
A very intriguing Hardcore EDM release brought to us by the one and only Pat Maherr, AKA Expressway Yo-Yo Dieting. If you're familiar with his other works, the sound and style of this album won't surprise you: It's lofi, noisy, atmospheric, dense, surreal, and psychedelic, but its also tons of fun. If you like his other works, definitely check this one out.

>Neu! - Neu! 75
I feel that Neu are at their best when they stick to the motorik based tracks, the 2 on here are the best tracks by far and they pretty much save this record. The ambient stuff is pretty much a snoozefest, similar stuff is done far better by other bands. The other two tracks are punkish and more aggressive, it's more interesting than the ambient stuff I guess but again its nothing that they do particularly well.
3

>Harmonia - Musik von Harmonia
The sounds on this record are interesting, the synths create a great atmosphere and the guitars compliment them really well. However it just seems so aimless. The sounds just meander without really going anywhere, the tracks don't seem to have a beginning or an end they sort of just float about going nowhere. The opening track Watussi is essentially the only song here that feels like it can stand on its own, the rest just falls flat.

13th Floor Elevators - The Psychedelic Sounds Of
One of the first psychedelic rock records. When it's not assaulting you with the staccato electric jug, it's slightly off-kilter garagey blues rock in the vein of Captain Beefheart's debut, which would come out the next year, but with a less charismatic singer.

The risks that keep the economy going, the risks that make for great stories, adventures and so forth. Every cool thing that could approach you you'll say no. And it's not just you its a large section of an entire generation. Wasting away in their cubicles counting down the time until the day of their death....

Well, I went to McDonald's today and got a Filet-O-Fish combo with a bacon cheeseburger on the side. I was eating it in my vehicle in the parking lot and listening to an audio book when I glanced up and saw the McDonald's worker I ordered outside having a cigarette.

She waved at me and I nodded and had to wait 7 minutes before she went back inside and I could eat in comfort again. I don't think that employees should be bothering or even trying to socialize with customers outside of the McDonald's restaurant or drive through, but that is another story.

I went to McDonald's for dinner tonight and got a McChicken combo with a bacon cheeseburger on the side. As I was driving to the second window the same girl was still working. She was acting somewhat obsequious and attempting small talk when she asked, 'why don't you come eat inside instead of in the parking lot where it is cold'.

That really bothered me for many reasons. First of all, I don't want my routine or actions to be tracked by a fast food employee. Secondly, she should not try to tell me how I should live my life. I do not want to eat inside because I find it less comfortable and would much rather be inside my vehicle listening to an audiobook and enjoying myself and my privacy.

Overall, I think it was very unprofessional to bring this up. I should have a clean slate with each drive through visit, not have to get the third degree because I committed some sort of faux pas. Which I don't think I did, because I often see people eating in fast food parking lots. How does she know I am not busy going to work or somewhere in a rush?

How do you feel about eating in your vehicle in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant versus eating inside the restaurant?

For me, I'd say listen to their first five (all great, but I'd start with Paranoid personally) and if you really need more Sabbath in your life listen to Sabotage, Heaven and Hell, and Mob Rules.

Nothing else is worth your time.
