Honest thoughts on this album? I just pirated it and listened to all of the songs for the first time about a week ago and I'm addicted.

So many catchy riffs and unusually heavy breakdowns, I fucking love it. I think "Here Comes Revenge" is the best track on the album, feels like some really thrashy early Metallica sound mixed in with Death Magnetic.

It's a long post, but I have a theory that the real reason is MTV and subsequently YouTube. It used to be that people didn't even know how many bands/artists looked. But then came music TV, and they gave producers the idea that they could simply pick up some pretty girls/boys, make some sexy/gimmicky videos and make a lot cash. No one will remember their music? Critics will call it trash? Who cares, really. Money says you're wrong.
And it's way worse for genres and arts that lost mainstream appeal, which clinged to their 'true' roots. Books? You have 50 Shades of Grey as a bestseller. Mainstream metal? It went downhill, from glam to nu-metal to Babymetal.

I agree to an extent, but here're 2 counterpoints.
First, before MTV, only the biggest acts had this kind of musical exposure. Like Rolling Stones made their fame on their antics, but not many other bands enjoyed their spot on TV aside for non-music show appearances. There were some musical videos, but they were pretty shit—amateur production on cheap film, mostly. The music mattered way more. You could look like Geddy Lee or Meat Loaf, and still sell pretty well. Then with MTV the emphasis has slipped from music. Thriller is still the best-selling album of all time, and not in the least due to videos. Duran Duran and Madonna made their fame with image first. And the last straw was when Spice Girls and Britney appeared and dominated the charts, taking music out of music. All because of the unlimited exposure they got. And today we have YouTube instead which propelled Justin Bieber and Gangnam Style from zeroes to heroes. Same goes for "X got talent" shows and such.
Second, corporate labels do not necessarily take control from artists and/or screw them. Certainly, there are some bad cases, like big labels rejecting everything that doesn't sound like current big trend. But in other cases it's the artist themselves who choose to go in a more marketable direction. Take Metallica, Green Day or U2. Take glam shits who chose to wear makeup. Take Slipknot who still somehow sell.
All in all, the real issue here is: is there demand for your music? Or is there only demand for pretty girls/boys, and gimmicky entertaining shit?

This is partially true.
There are bands with lyrics that don't speak about religion.
If a band is anti-religious and comes from a christian country, it bashes Christianity.
But there are bands from the ME that insult Islam (for example Remains of a burnt mosque). Some Euro black metal artist have criticised islam, of course outrage was bigger than when they shitted on Christianity.
Satanism in black metal is shitty, but the genre can be cool

Find several metalheads which you see have common sense and like albums you like. Follow them. You will have their rating averages in green text added to site-wide ratings. You can then search their libraries and see other high-rated albums.
This is how you do it. Accurate ratings from real people.

That sounds like your problem. Firstly because, internet ratings or not, it's a very, very well known album that's namedropped by many musicians and appears in many anthologies (to call them something) on the genre(s). You can't just decide you're going to ignore an album of such renown because RYM told you to. Without trying to appeal to an ad populum, sometimes albums get to be in everyone's mouth for a reason. That's enough incentive to listen to it for yourself.

Instead of relying on reviews, you should rely on the commentary of musicians whose music you already like. See if you can read more than two interviews with the big names of death metal, thrash and even black without that album being mentioned.

There is no "buddy group", this is what you get wrong. I follow some people (afaik it's not displayed anywhere). They independent;y rate their albums, I rate mine. We don't communicate in any way.
But, when I see some album, I see not 1 but ratings. 1 from all RYM users, and 1 from my "friends"—people I follow. So I can see, is it worth listening or not.
Sometimes I go to rate some album and then look at what my friends rated it. Often it's in 0.5-star range or exact same rating.
