Do you ACTUALLY belong on /mu/?

If yes, post your top 10 albums of all time (be honest!), followed by your obscurity score.

How can you know your obscurity score? Pretty easy.
1) Go to RYM and write the number of ratings for each of your 10 favorite albums.
2) Write the following formula into google (replacing all the "x"s with the amount of RYM ratings for each album).
(log(x)+log(x)+log(x)+log(x)+log(x)+log(x)+log(x)+log(x)+log(x)+log(x))/10
3) ???
4) PROFIT!

Now, do you ACTUALLY belong on /mu/?
>4.0+
You have to go back >>>/b/
>3.5 to 3.9
/mu/drone, lurk more before posting again.
>3.0 to 3.4
Not a /mu/drone, but you should explore less popular music more.
>2.5 to 2.9
Good taste, you keep /mu/ quality high.
>2.0 to 2.4
Great taste, /mu/ should follow your example.
>0 to 1.9
Awesome taste. Are you sure you didn't cheat though?

Let's begin!

>>
>No, but when your favorites happen to be obscure, then you can be pretty sure those are high quality albums.
uh i'd think you'd be pretty sure that your favorite albums are high quality regardless of how obscure they are, if they're your favorite albums

>It also means you have an open minded musical taste
not necessarily. you can dig down into the deepest obscurities of, say, a particular genre, and still be completely closed off to anything outside that genre. likewise, you can have the most basic entry-level knowledge, but still enjoy all sorts of strange and obscure music that other people might rec you, for instance

>>74255700
>>"good taste" = "listens to music that is good"
>common misconception but this is not true
this is actually a really good point. like, if someone exclusively listened to pink floyd, the beatles, and radiohead - all very well-known/entry-level bands. one may consider those bands good (maybe you don't but we're saying they are for this example), but if that's all they know, or worse yet, all they like even after listening to other stuff. so yeah i agree with you here and you have educated me

Yes, but you get the idea. Those obscure albums ended in the top 10 because of merit, against all the odds.
>not necessarily.
>you can dig down into the deepest obscurities of, say, a particular genre, and still be completely closed off to anything outside that genre.
I would argue their taste would be good if they are competent at their specific niche, regardless if they are close minded. But it's a fair point anyways.

>likewise, you can have the most basic entry-level knowledge, but still enjoy all sorts of strange and obscure music that other people might rec you, for instance
If your obscurity score is high then I highly doubt it.

>>74256724

Every song except for one has a very intense climax, and it's fun all the way. Mindblowing stuff, and pretty innovative sense of rhythm as well.

right, but not to the 16 year olds here
in case you haven't noticed this entire thread and most of mu is just a pissing race about who has the most "cultured"/"developed" taste. most of the people here get basically jack shit out of music for its actual content. it's all about the fucking image on this garbage board.

>>74257859

They wouldn't have that taste if they actually cared to explore about music.

>>74257867
>but that's wrong you idiot
It's not. People who actually listen to less popular music end up having some less popular stuff as their favorites.
>>
>>74257706
I think you're overestimating his influence. Let's go down his top 10:
1. TMR is pretty well-known, it's even in the Rolling Stone best albums list, and people like Matt Groening say that it's their favorite album.
2. Robert Wyatt was a member of Soft Machine, the most famous band of the Canterbury Scene. His solo work would be known just from that.
3. Faust is one of the best-known krautrock bands.
4. and 5. Obviously would be extremely well known without Scaruffi.
6. Popol Vuh scored a lot of the films of Werner Herzog (a very well-known director).
7. Pere Ubu were extremely influential in the development of post-punk (a very popular genre among those who like rock music).
8. I will give you this one, they would be pretty obscure without Scaruffi.
9. John Fahey's popularity is probably more due to Scaruffi than most of the rest of the list but he's still a pretty big deal among guitarists.
10. Nico would be popular just because of TVU&N.

Now, I'm not saying Scaruffi didn't play a role in making these albums better known among people who use rym. But if Scaruffi never existed and I plugged his albums into that algorithm I doubt I'd score below a 3.

Because if you actually listened to stuff that's not popular, eventually some would become your favorites. It's definitely not a coincidence when you have Radiohead, Beatles and other /mu/core in your top 10.

>Because you, a single person on /mu/, are representative of every other person who browses /mu/ and listens to obscure music.
From my experience browsing threads such as /charts/ I have seen that people with /mu/core top 10 tend to have /mu/core top 100, and it's evident from there that they don't actually listen to stuff that's not popular.

Not really. One album alone doesn't do much to lift up the score. You are lucky though, you kind of "cheated" (not intentionally) the formula, because RYM doesn't have much ratings for The Pillows who are pretty popular nor that specific Bill Evans recording (too specific from an artists with so many recordings). It's a surprisingly entry level thing but at the same time it's also not, because the pillows has little penetration here, and so does Titãs. She Her Her Hers and Mouse on the Keys aren't popular at all, then it's a gradual increase in popularity reaching its zenith with Revolver that just stands head and shoulders above everyone else. There are some that definitely aren't leaving that any time soon (Quadrophenia and Revolver are probably my top 2 albums as a whole), while others will depend on how deep do I explore the genres.

yeah, but top 10 of all time favorites? not necessarily. maybe within like top 30 or something, but not everyone would find shit that they would like so much that they put it in their top 10.
>>
>>74260022
>but top 10 of all time favorites?
Yes
>maybe within like top 30 or something
From my experience browsing chart threads, people have top 10s that correlate with their top 100s regarding obscurity.
>but not everyone would find shit that they would like so much that they put it in their top 10
Yeah, because they think they listen to less popular stuff but they actually don't.
>>
>>74260038
do you think that everyone reacts to art in the same way? this post in particular does not allude to that idea, but many of the other posts you've made do.
>>
>>74252795
I like you. Everyone else here is a /mu/drone nowadays.
>>
>>74260090
Eh, I don't see the point of your post. Also, almost everything I have said ITT is along the same lines of that post.

>>74260132
I know, right? I thought it was just bias at first, but just by looking at chart threads from the past you can see there are way more /mu/drones than before.
>>
>>74260241
so, are you just going to answer the question, or...?
>>
>>74260241
I do enjoy you, though you throw the gatekeeping kinda high and I disagree with your opinions on prog. That said, I do find that you're decent enough at explaining your opinions.
>>
>>74260290
The answer is obviously not. I don't know why you needed me to answer that. Do you believe water is wet?
>>
This thread is pretty funny. OP is either a massive autist or doing a funny impression of one. Hard to tell. I feel bad for all the people that have sincerely posted their "obscurity score" though. Their lives must be pretty depressing.
>>
>>74260335
why is it that you think everyone reacts the same upon listening to more obscure music, then?
>>
>>74253205
>IOSYS
Lmao, you can't be serious, can you?
>>
>>74260325
Thank you anon, that means a lot to me.
But how come high? I mean, the categories above seem alright, with the exception that some people can get an artificially low score (not the other way around though), but I guess that can be fixed by using LastFM instead of RYM.
Also, I'm always right when it comes to prog c:<

>>74260351
t. plebeian who started browsing /mu/ 3 months ago

>>74260361
Because music doesn't sound obscure, so people react the same way to music if it's popular or obscure.
>>
>>74260389
Most IOSYS stuff is pretty simple, but their Denpa Collection albums (and Hyper Denpa) are something completely different. Mind blowing stuff.
>>
>>74260390
but, what if someone's favorites are all relatively popular releases and even upon listening to plenty of "obscure" albums their taste remains the same, is what i'm asking.
>people react the same way to music if it's popular or obscure.
this is simply not true. people react to art in many different ways and the context behind how they are introduced to the music and what they are expecting, as well as how the music is described beforehand can have a significant impact on the listener's opinion.
>>
Is this a trick question? Albums I listen to aren't on RYM.
>>
>>74260438
That doesn't happen. Surely it could in theory, but I have never seen such a thing. Odds are if you actually listen to less popular stuff, you will end up liking some of it. Obscure music isn't of lower quality than popular, you should know that already.

>>74260450
In which case assume it has 1 rating. If it's a classical release, choose the number of ratings of the most popular recordings of your favourite compositions multiplied by two.
>>
2.94201351764
>>
>>74260390
The gatekeeping thing is more that while I fully agree that people ought to lurk more just in general, I do think that there should be a more widespread discussion on how to get started - flowcharts being an interesting way of doing this, but also chart threads. Even just getting beyond /mu/core is kind of difficult, especially when you want to get into a genre.
>>
>>74260473
>Obscure music isn't of lower quality than popular
beauty is all in the eye of the beholder. again, a listener's experience can be molded and shaped in completely different ways depending on the context regarding their exposure to the artist.
>>
>>74260484
I guess. The thing is charts and flowcharts further promote this stagnation. You have flowcharts for Radiohead and Zappa etc for example, and genre flow charts aren't very good.
I have been thinking of making some charts of best rock albums and best music in general (with the idea of bests being most original with the intention of reaching the higher diversity possible with the fewest albums), but I still haven't started.
Now, Patriciancore charts are a great idea. The only charts I believe are truly helpful. Check them out if you haven't.

>>74260509
Okay, if they think lower of an album because it's obscure then their taste is irredeemable shit and we are back to what I have been saying.

No, I fucking don't. I hate this board! I am far too old to be here and I have been ever since I first came here. It is clear that the average /mu/tant is ~17 years old (and on top of that American) and the kind of music discussed here reflects that. But you know how it is, we can't leave.

>Okay, if they think lower of an album because it's obscure then their taste is irredeemable shit and we are back to what I have been saying.
what if someone thinks higher of an album because it's obscure? what if someone thinks lower of an album because it's popular, as you seem to do? i think you have trouble grasping the idea that music can be like any other possession. there can be all sorts of feelings and thoughts attached to it for the listener. memories brought back of old friends, or thoughts brought back from a not so great time in someone's life. for example, the album posted here was my favorite album when i was much younger. i listen to it now and i notice many flaws with it, but i still find it a very enjoyable experience, because it brings me back quite some time, to a period which i now look back at with positive sentiments.
basically, what i am saying here is that listening to music is a deeply personal experience for some people, and that it can change how a work is thought of completely.

I was just like you a while back. I had made a post very similar to this in a chart or collage thread because I thought I had genuinely good taste because I had listened to a couple noise compilations, had just started exploring footwork, and liked Xiu Xiu. The truth is everyone has their own unique sensibilities and if you look deep enough you will find music that seems made specifically for you. Others might nit have picked up on it and it may not have gained much traction but now that you have found it you're life is greatly enriched because you've found something that checks all of you boxes. The fact that it's obscure doesn't really add to it and if you truly love it you'll want others to know about it so you won't feel alone in liking this album you think is perfect. Keep looking, anon. You'll find that perfect album that will break you. I know I'm still looking.
