Bass below the 5th is fucking hard, from here >>>74165162

any tips?
>>
>>74165973
loosen that kung fu grip. your thumb should just be resting, no need to choke out the neck.
your thumb pivots your hand to flow over to I III & V.
this will involve stretching and practice.
>>
>>74166070
>your thumb pivots your hand to flow over to I III & V.

So, I actually move my hand? Aren't I supposed to keep the fingers on their corresponding frets at all times?
>>
>>74165872
Hey guys, do you believe in tonewood?
>>
Why am I so lazy
>>
>>74166092
>>74166070
By the way, if I don't 'choke the neck', there's always buzz, specially on those frets.

is what i mean. for 1 finger 1 fret you may need to reach with your pinky and this pivot will help you get to the fret. over 5 frets your thumb should stay in the same spot while your hand moves.

Adam Neeley (professional bassist) actually recommends the opposite: keep fingers diagonal to fretboard and straighten the wrist.

theres buzz becaue you dont press the strings enoff
you shouldnt press the strings by pressing your thumb against the neck you should be able to fret even without the thumb, the thumb isnt to make any strenght

tfw ring finger joint doesn't bend enough for high e string to ring out in A Shape barre chord
>>
>>74166291
Honestly, the first five frets are kinda iffy on a bass. I don't notice any speed/fretting difference when switching from to thumb towards headstock to thumb towards first string. The first method however is much more comfortable. But again that might depend on how big are your hands, and whether you're playing 4/5/6 string.
>>
>>74167085
Seeing this actually made me go practice. Thanks anon, I'll try to remember this everytime I don't want to do anything.
>>
>>74167667
Well, when I point the thumb to the headstock, it's more comfortable but harder to stretch the hand. If I angle the wrist and point the thumb upwards, I can stretch the hand more but it really tenses up my arm and hand.

how is he doing the D shape chord in this?

example: the first C he does he seems to be adding a note with his third finger?
but that would throw my understanding of theory out the window if he was adding that note
or is he simply muting the string?

is anchoring bad or no
>>
>>74170104
That "rule" isn't even true. If anything, bigger guitars tend to be more bassy and boomy, and smaller ones are brighter and punchier. Big guitars like jumbos/dreadnaughts can still be very dull and comparatively quiet, depending on a lot of factors.

As a beginner, you shouldn't be too concerned with the "perfect" guitar for a certain sound/style, because you haven't developed that preference yet. Go to a store and try out a bunch of shit, pick one that sounds good to you, and more importantly, feels comfortable.
>>

>>
>>74170911
it's not really bad, plenty of good guys do it. i anchored since i started playing and then learned how to play without anchoring. i can go back and forth now. the only difference is i feel more 'loose' when i play without anchoring, kind of hard to describe. i'd say it's worth learning how to play without anchoring though, just by focusing on picking i improved a lot.

>>74171304
so buy the proper files..
>>
>>74170911
I wouldn't call it flat-out bad, but I don't think it helps any. And I noticed that with my acoustic, if I anchor, there's a big change in tone that sounds really thuddy and the overall tone gets duller. Never noticed that issue on electric though.
>>
any tips/videos for fast arpeggios/"sweeps" on bass ?
especially for the right hand when ascending, the only technique I've found is to use the index's nail as some sort of pick and glide across the strings but it's kinda hard to switch between that and regular bass plucking

>>74171339
>if I anchor, there's a big change in tone that sounds really thuddy and the overall tone gets duller.
that's because you're preventing the top of the acoustic from vibrating
>>
Hey guys Im wondering if this setup would work
Guitar -> usb interface input -> laptop
Then
Usb interface output -> rca(red white) to 1/4 inch adapter -> amp
If i do this would i be able to send my signal from fl studio out my amp? I also need the adapter as my interface only has one 1/4 inch input and the rest is rca. Id like to do this to use all the pedals in fl instead of dropping all my very limited money on analoh. Is there anything blatantly wrong or anything i need to know?
>>
Finally got my custom Mauler Dually 2x15's last night! Loaded them up with Eminence Delta-15A's I got from a friend of mine who could get them at cost, which helped keep cost down. Paired with the Super Bassman these cabs howl!
>>
>>74172320
lol idk. Make sure the output of the interface isn't too high. There might be a lot of lag too.

Try it and let us know if you blow your amp.

The Fender, if you can stand the color. I don't know why he's calling it a Squire. It's a good Jap guitar.
>>
>>74172527
A guy told me it should be fine as long as do proper gain staging and leveling. I can control the output of my interface easily. Why would i blow my amp? Volume?
>>
>>74172568
You should be fine to be honest, I was just joking. As long as you have everything set up right at least. Keep the volume super low and work your way up once it's all set up.
>>
>>74172566
I was not a fan of the contemporary strat from late 80s early 90s. The locking nut ate strings like a motherfucker and the trem was not good at all.
>>
>>74172291 try it out at first slow with a metronome then work yourself up from there. There's no cutting Corners with the proper sweep/arpeggio
>>
>>74172909
The reason I decided against recommending this one was that tremolo Floyd Rose copies are Infamous for being utter failures
>>
>>74172709
Oh okay thanks. One more thing. Why dont more people do this? Does digital sound worse? I have pirated fl producers ed. so i have like 50 pedals, all the vsts, etc
>>
>>74173002
My brother had one of them, not sure which trem was on it, think it was a Kahler. They sold it as if it was a floyd rose style trem, but it doesn't have a recession for it.

>>
>>74173203
Dont anchor. Get used to keeping your hand floating
>>
>>74170832
>>74172909
>>74173002
In this case, there's no locking nut. It will act like a regular trem. I never had problems with my '85 and I used to work it with stupid shit like scoops, warbles and dive bombs.
>>
>>74173085
>that volume knob placement right next to the strings

strats are such repulsive hackery. the only useful reason to put it that close is volume swells and most people with half a brain will just use a volume pedal for that
>>
how long you been neeting
>>
>>74173050
Kahlers arent the worst but a weird issue they had was they would keep in tune if you lowered the pitch but if you lifted the bar and went back to normal it would get slightly out of tune. But it was easily fixed by lowering pitch and going back to normal. This is why almost every slayer solo with whammy work usually ends on a dive. Kerry king is readjusting and getting it back in tune.
>>
>>74173698
Well, the one my brother had ate strings and wouldn't stay in tune if you barely touched it.

I want to start practice more and more seriously to be able to play what I like, my biggest weakness is how fluent I play, alongside my fingers aren't as strong as I believe they should be, my Hammer ons and pull offs are sloppy

Does anyone know if there's a place where I can find more excersises like the spider? Something to make my fingers stronger?
>>
I want to be really good at the following genres:

-Psychedelic Rock
-Blues
-Classic Heavy Metal
-Stoner rock
-Doom metal

Is it too contradictory? im not very good with speed, but im afraid that if i get fast ill lose my sense of chill slow rythm
>>
Are Danelectro guitars good or are they a meme? I was looking into getting one of their 12 strings because they're so cheap.
>>
Is 29 years old, enough to become a good?, i mean i not a total newb but i know very little, if i started practicing, say, 2 hours per day, could i become a proficient guitar player in a year?
>>
>>74181174
Classic heavy metal is not that shreddy so you won't go too far into the guitar wanking that takes place
>>
>>74181234
Age is a a myth
When I was back in highschool I took a free course the school offered, open for anyone, even people outside the school, it didn't teach me much more than I knew, but my other classmates where men in their 40's and 50's
So yeah, there's that.
>>
>>74181257
well , its not that shreddy but like, to play shit like judas priest or led zeppeling you have to know your shit. also id like to know a bit of thrahs metal, but that kind of palm muting takes a lot of practice, right?
>>
>>74181275
but like, can you get really good if you dont start from really young
>>
>>74181314
If you want to do it the classic way (downstrokes only) it's a bit tricky
if you want everyone to yell at you for playing it "wrong" just alternate.
>>
>>74181356
>If you want to do it the classic way (downstrokes only) it's a bit tricky
i saw a video of the metallica guy playing master of puppets, now that hes old he does it alternate.

but anyway, is it a titanic task to get all those skills more or less under control these ones:>>74181174

or am i spreading myself too much
>>
>>74181356
alternate doesnt give the desired tension/punch you know that
>>
>>74181334
We all have heard from the guy that started playing since he was a fetus and played something by Joe Satriani at age 5.
With enough practice and dedication you can be on the same level regardless of age.
I do believe it's easier for younger players, because their muscles are still developing, but that's a myth
>>
>>74181314
Well i also like thos genres and from my experience being fast is more difficult but i find grooving slowly more fun, but you can do both, just saying being fast is harder
>>
>>74181391
>just saying being fast is harder
do i really have to do repetitive speed excersises for hours at a time or is there other way?
>>
>>74181160
do the spider exercise with only pullofs/hammerons

>>74181380
not if you actually practice
>>
>>74181380
Focus on one thing at the time, and focus on that one, once you got it down move on to the next.
You can play a variety of genres, styles, techniques, but take it slowly, too much too quickly gives no results.
>>
>>74181417
>Spider excersise with only Hammer ons and pull offs
How would that go? hammer the 6th and 8th fret, then pull off back to the 5th and 7th?
>>
>>74181444
hammer going up, pullof going down no secret

h1-h2-h3-h4-------------------------------p3-p2-p1-
-----------------h1-h2-h3-h4-p3-p2-p1--------------
repeat one fret up

or another pattern you may come up with
>>
>>74181412
There is no fun way to build up speed and technique unless you are into repetitive actions
>>
>>74181424
>too much too quickly gives no results.
i have practiced A LOT like this

also, im doing classes with a teacher and since im interested in improv for psych rock and trippy music he suggested i learn theory and jazz, so far i feel like i learned a lot but a lot of the stuff i have learned i find no way of applying it and the volume of information just keeps on piling up.

For example now im learning the chords of the lydian mode to play over a major key. I've studied them all, struggle to keep them in my memory but when i try to use them in a song i struggle to do anything else than mechanically repeating it and none of my ideas sound even vaguely musical.

Does learning jazz really pay off to do cool improv or can you get the same result just from learning licks?
>>
>>74181523
i find it "fun" to feel the progress and my fingers stretching and gettin strong

>i feel like i learned a lot but a lot of the stuff i have learned i find no way of applying it
>I've studied them all, struggle to keep them in my memory but when i try to use them in a song i struggle to do anything else than mechanically repeating it and none of my ideas sound even vaguely musical.
learn songs so you figure applied, musicalized theory
>>
what stuff i can "paint" on the sanded wood of my neck joint
>>
dead soon
>>
>>74181531
Have you ever heard a chord progression in your head but just can't get it to sound right coming out of your guitar?

Learning jazz will make that never happen again.
>>
bam bam bam satellite of love
>>
>>74182092
right now i think the only chord progression i can identify is a blues one.
>>
>>74182137
try learning to identify intervals themselves
>>
>>74182137
Just keep practicing. Everyone goes through that point when learning theory. Blues is simple as hell, so it's taught first. Naturally it's the first to click musically. Just keep on doing what you're doing.

Practice hard and often my dude. It'll come together in a few years.
>>
>>74182161
Today i spent at least 4 hours hours just running the chords from the lydian mode trough the neck. It fucked up my mind and felt like if i learned nothing
>>
>>74182185
try learning by small fragments like boxes
for me it worked finding the intervals around chord shapes cause you have the fifth and third already
>>
>>74182185
Yeah, take a break then. I get fatigued if I practice that long.

Usually at that point I make a generic progression using the chords of the mode that is fucking me up and loop it. Then I noodle over it for an hour and feel a little better about my progress. It's important to have fun with it sometimes.

The other anons also have good advice.

Silly looking pick guard and, of course, that's where the volume knob goes. I would end up drilling holes. Needs standard adjustable bridge, as well.

22 vs 24 frets equals a two note difference. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. (Not him.)

Next year you'll be 30. Better to be 30 with a year of guitar under your belt.

>>74181412

I always have fun applying the same picking to different notes. So creating runs that have the left hand changing direction, etc. The right hand would be allowed to skip strings for a switch and use inside or outside picking each time.

Paint some paint. There's a reason paint is both a noun and a verb.

I hit 9 inversions of 7th chords in less time. High and low voicings with some repeats, obviously, for a total of 63 strums. Not bragging about this. Just use your time wisely. (I just started the same for Harmonic Minor. So cool.)

Yes, the one you posted didn't look like that. Bigsby's and strat-style tremolo's are not what I meant, wrong type of vibrato, it has to look like the jazz style, like pic related.

The other ones are dogshit
>>
I know I sound like a pussy, but is their a way to make a guitar quieter while practicing? I'm very self conscious about disturbing others or them making fun of my lack of ability. I was practicing at my college last year and my roommate made fun of me, and I almost gave up on guitar afterwards but I've picked it back up this summer since I'm alone.

>>74182417
First answer, strat style and bigsby. Both good answers

>>74182504

When you exercise a task with your muscles repeatedly, you are helping your neurons make more and stronger connections with the muscle tissue required to perform the task.

Even most of the strength people get from weight lifting is this kind of muscle-neuron development, rather than packing actual muscle tissue.
>>
>>74177599
It actually does. Go to the 19:40 mark on this video and play through to 37:44

https://youtu.be/w-Spf-l0pmw?t=1180

It's amazing to me, but doing this daily at this slow to medium tempo has improved my picking speed tremendously in a relatively small amount of time. I use strictly alternate picking for this section.

One of you guys recommended me .010s for my acoustic guitar recently, Jesus Christ thank you. This plays like a dream now and I really don't need the extra volume and bass from the thicker strings. I actually prefer the overall sound of the guitar with 10s, it's a big dreadnought so it felt too bassy with the original .012s.

No, I thought "acoustics always come with .012s, I need to man up and play with .012s or it will sound terrible". It actually doesn't and I love this guitar now.

Ok Samuel, when you come back take a look at the way this is laid out:

RUA: HILDA DA COSTA, nº:191
CEP: 55590000
BAIRRO CENTRO

CIDADE: IPOJUCA
ESTADO: PERNAMBUCO
PAÍS: BRASIL

RECEIVER: SAMUEL CAMPOS FARIA or GABRIEL ALBUQUERQUE / FERREIRA / SILVA

I'm going to print this exact block of text out as a shipping label and attach it to the envelope so it has to be perfectly laid and spelled out so the goes where it's supposed to. If there are any mistakes or misspelled words tell me so I can correct it. All jokes aside I hope it actually arrives when I send it.

I might not get out until the middle of next month though so for right now don't hold your breath for it.
>>
So I was trying to play Teen Age Riot by Sonic Youth and I realised even though its in 4/4 I'm unable to figure out how to count the rhythm of the repeating part at the very start.
Normally I'm used to just feeling it without counting it but I should be able to count this easily right?
Are there any good ways to practice counting out rhythm?
>>
>>74186565
It just feels better to me (coming from electric guitar) in general. Simply strumming chords also feels much better with these thinner strings. I know that I gave up volume and some bass response, but that also doesn't bother me really.
>>
>>74186641

Are you trying to keep the same color or do you want a different kind of finish. Holy hell that is some porous ass grainy ass wood.

The code 25w is alright if you use NONE of the presets which all fuckin suck except for the marshall fury one but that might be because the others are so bad.

Funny thing is, I just arrived to ask about half stack marshalls. How many watts and what would you recommend for playing out at bars n shit?

I have a 75w line 6 spider IV I got when I was like 17, I'd prefer a marshall. A buddy of mine told me that amp is too weak for playing out. Any suggestions?

You know I've never had any issues with it. Only some cosmetic wear but it holds tune just fine

Try a jcm series amp I have a 900 and I absolutely love it it gets a lot of hate but those are the ones with the 5881 tubes. My amp is super loud and these are the type of amps that soind better louder. Not fit for bedroom practice. Thats why all the bedroom players hate it. They cant use its full potential.
What styles you mostly play

Sand with steel wool. And buy dye not stain. And good finishes take time and elbow grease. Alot of finishes have cure times in between steps that is what makes the end time so lengthy in high-end guitars
>>
>>74188211
im kindoff a newb, could you give me a quick class on amps, so far this is what i know:

marshall: nice distorted sound for agressive rock

orange: warm distortion , used in classic and stoner rock

rolland: sound cleaner than a scalpel before a surgery

but i dont know models and shit, what other basics should i know? what are tweeds good for? and how do i identify the models
>>
>>74188382
I'm a Randy rhoads fag, I also use a MXR distortion + pedal like the meme autist I am. So hopefully thats enough info

Do you do flutters and crazy dive-bombs or just basic vibrato

First learn about tubes. power and preamp. Then learn about speakers.
>>
>>74188445
I would say go with the jcm 800 but good luck trying to find one cheap. The 900 really likes compression and Miles boost to push it over the edge but will get muddy with any distortion pedal used all the way in Channel b. And funny thing is in the 900 all pedal sound amazing through the clean Channel a. Also look into jcm2000s and tsl

Ur welcome are you planning to rely on your distortion on the amp or on a pedal?
>>
>>74188438
dud just search these amps on youtube
tweeds are fender tweeds which is an era of fender amps
>>
>>74188882
Pedal, I find it easier to just use a clean setting then use pedal for distortion.

also i think i could be easily be fooled into buying a meme amp, luckily i dont have money yet.
>>
>>74189009
old country and blues guys used them
rock guys use them
they have really nice distortion
theyre also used for sparkly cleans, specially the bassman
>>
>>74188928
Okay but keep in mind that there are also amps with selectable channels. And if you're just going to rely on pedals that it's okay to get an amp that doesn't have the gain stage just cleans. Look @ blackstar ht pedals. And I also have a late 80s mxr Distortion plus pedal
