I detuned the E string on my dreadnought fairly low just to see what happens and it still had quite the presence. I would assume with a longer scale length, a bigger body and thicker strings that would actually be even better. What am I missing? Is it that bass just needs to be louder to be heard over higher frequencies? Or is it because it lacks fundamental (that detuned guitar had loads of mids but the fundamental wasn't that strong). Just curious, I never tried an acoustic bass guitar.

Not him but it's debatable if it really makes a noticable difference on electric guitars. Neckwoods are chosen for structural reasons and the body of an electric guitar is a thick slab of wood, it doesn't vibrate freely like an acoustic. Not to mention that this would have to somehow translate back into the strings themselves since only the strings are being picked up, not the vibration of the body.

It doesnt make a massive difference but it does showcase a woods subtle qualities. Now we get into the argument of if pickups sound better in certain woods and ones technique and methods of playing and its role. From my personal experience i would say that evo pickups are hella bassy and warm in basswood bodies and the same pickup is much different in an alder body.

I've played two strats with identical specs with the exception that one had an alder body and one had an ash body. Solely based off of my experience, I'd say that wood does make a difference in the body; however, even two guitars with identical specs can sound different sometimes, so it's possible it wasn't the wood at all.

You couldn't have possibly kept all other variables the same. That's the problem. Same wiring? Same potentiometers? Same pickup position to 1/10th of a mm? Same strings, completely fresh? i've used the petrucci jazz 3s for months now. i really like them and they don't slip around, i dont know what material they use for the grippy part of the pick but it's very comfortable and it's "dry" enough that it won't be slipping around in your fingers. some people don't like how it sounds though, i personally like it though. it's slightly larger than a jazz 3 too.

First i made sure i did the fx loop trick. It really does work. Alot of people complain about a lack of gain but thats with the 5881 tubes. Mine is an earlier model that came with el34 and currently is running el34ls. This shit is so ballsy that my body started making its own estrogen in high amount due to the testosterone inducing chug this bitch has. That is with active emg pickups. With my shawbucker i get excellent mid to hi gain. Sounds really good in channel A if you are using lower gain settings or styles. I do for some things on standard guitar, and it's basically essential playing lap steel, dobro, pedal steel stuff. I think it's good for certain banjo styles, but bad for others (clawhammer mainly).

My preferred approach is just using a thumbpick though, since it's easy to go between fingerstyle and flatpicking. But I fucked up one of my right hand nails recently and so I've just been using a normal pick while I wait for it to grow back.
