Bass is a shit instrument most of the time. It's just there cause if it wasn't there the song wouldn't feel full and it doesn't matter what it's playing as long as it's on key. Guitar is more protagonist, be it as a lead, rhythm or just chords. It's also more versatile.

There's always stuff like Primus but bass is easily the worst instrument overall.

This is an example of a song in which most people wont even notice the bass, even though it's clearly audible.

Here's one in which it's barely audible, although it'd be easy to tell the difference if it wasn't there, in both songs the bass is pretty much just existing, while the guitar takes the lead.
If you removed the bass from those tracks, it'd just sound weird to the untrained ear. If you removed the guitar, it'd sound awfully incomplete.
