>why did they make archtops without soundholes even before they had electric pickups
Without any soundholes? I'm not aware of any, do you have a picture or a link? In theory it would still work, it would be like a closed speaker cabinet instead of an open one.
>also is there an archtop with a bridge pickup? but like a jazz hollowbody not just a semihollow like a es335
I know that the retrofitted pickups (in the very early days) were mostly in the neck position for some reason (warmer tone was more suitable for jazz, or they didn't know any better?). I'm no expert, you can browse big music stores for hollowbodies and see if some come up with a bridge pickup. Be aware though that a complete hollowbody guitar can have issues with feedback if you play amplified, that was one of the reasons why they made semi-hollows.
>>
>>74095678
They're made in mexico, mexican labour is cheaper so they can be produced cheaper. Because of that they are also the "cheaper line" of Fender guitars, meaning they use some cheaper hardware and pickups than the american ones. Not a massive difference. People also say that quality control is tighter on the american made ones, so the standard of production should be higher with these but who knows honestly. And if you get one and have a luthier work on it to make it perfect (if that is necessary) then there won't be a real difference between the two except for slightly different hardware and pickups.
>>
>>74095708
well not rounded holes, just small f holes i suppose they would be very quiet

>>
>>74095760
Hmm...I'll consider the Mexican one. Is the country of origin disclosed when buying or are there any specific ones to look out for? Also any specific model you would recommend?
>>
>>74095789
Cellos and upright basses also just use tiny F holes, the hole doesn't generate the sound, the vibrating top does. It's basically a speaker membrane (kinda). The holes just need to be able to let a tiny amount of air through, f holes are just fine for that.
>>74095814

>>

>>74095855
The mexican ones are cheaper, it clearly says "made in mexico" on the headstock and it should also say that on the product page. In your price range I'm pretty sure you'll only find made in mexico fender guitars.

Basically, the country of origin is already (kinda) the product line. You'll see a "fender standard stratocaster mim" mim stands for made in mexico. And then there would be a "fender standard stratocaster mia", made in america. Those are clearly labeled and 2 different lines of products. And actually they rebranded the standard mia line to the "american professional" series now, they start at 1500 as far as I could tell.

Basically, a fender standard stratocaster in your price range will be made in mexico most likely. They have some specialized models, but just the base model or maybe an HSS strat (humbucker single coil single coils instead of 3 single coil pickups) should serve you just fine. But I'd definitely go to a store and try them out, and also other brands of course.

Sorry if that was confusing, I should structure these better.
>>
>>74095955
No need for apologies, I appreciate any and all information I can get on the matter.

I might actually consider pitching in myself to get an American made guitar. I'm sure the Mexican ones are great but it's just something that calls to me about having an American made Fender.

Quite a dumb idea considering it's gonna cost more but this will probably become a family heirloom so I guess only the best is good enough.
>>
>>74095629
Repost, but the old thread died quickly.
I'm eyeing a custom made LP-ish guitar and my goal is to modernize the design (a bit) an to get rid of the inherent flaws in it. Of course it'll also be made to my liking, but that's the main goal.

The idea is:
Mahogany body with flamed maple top. Maybe a thinner body to make it more comfortable, could this result in head dive issues since it's reducing the weight of the body?
A better headstock design, more shallow angle, reinforced joint area, different headstock shape so the strings actually go over the nut straight (tuning machines moving inward). This should eliminate most of the tuning stability issues that LPs have. Oh and probably proper modern locking tuning machines or something like that.
A maple neck? I'm still reading up on this, but hardrock maple is considerably harder than most if not all mahogany. It just seems like it would be more stable and I like that.
2 humbuckers and the traditional control layout (2T, 2V, 3-way toggle), but I'd add two 3-way mini switches so I can switch the humbuckers to serial/parallel/single coil individually. Also, treble bleed or something similar on both volume controls.
24 frets (don't judge me)
A different bridge? Does the traditional tune o matic have issues? Not sure, never had a proper LP.

Yeah, any input, any ideas, anything I missed or didn't specify, anything stupid I mentioned, let me know.

Most important issues, the ones I am really not sure about: maple neck? different bridge? thinner body? but I welcome any ideas, questions, tips, etc. Just anything really.
>>
>>74096038
Eh, it is your decision. I personally think that there is nothing mystical about the MIA Fenders, but just try them out and see for yourself. The new ones, the american professional line, also changed some minor things I think. Some modernizations or tweaks, not sure. But the difference between the american models and the standard mexican ones seems to have widened a bit with the refresh.
>>
What's a guitar with a floating whammy bar that isn't from Blender, or isn't a jazzmaster/jaguar/mustang, u don't want to give them any more money
>>
>>74096038

I dont honestly think that having AMERICAN on your headstock justifies the price and workmanship that goes into a modern day Fender guitar

>>
>>74096157
Yes on the maple neck. Expensive Gibson Archtops have them and you rarely see them with broken headstocks (though it could be because it's a more careful type of owner)
>>
>>74096157

I personally consider maple necks to be disgusting

What's a good guitar with humbuckers that i can find for 1000-1800$? I'd trade this strat pro us that i got in a trade. Looking for thst classic rock sound but dont have the cash for a les paul. I love strats clean tone but feel like they sound like shit with distortion. What do?

>>
>>74096293

Maybe you are a post modern faggot who does not care about pink guitars?
>>
>>74096038
>>74096196
I looked it up, new and "better" pickups, a new neck profile (subjective), frets are shaped differently (subjective), treble bleed on the volume control (a technicality, most players don't really use the volume control too much and at home it's not that relevant), better tremolo system, slightly better hardware, allegedly better quality control.
That's what you're getting with the USA model over the mexican one. Again, I'd say you should go to a store and maybe even compare them side to side and decide for yourself if it's worth the extra money.
>>
>>74096235
I'm very tempted and I have some hints on why it "should" theoretically be better. Not sure.
>>74096237
Why?
>you really to to custom a custom guitar?
erm, what? Do I really need one? Basically, I want an LP-style, kinda, guitar but I'm really not happy with the 60 year old design that has many flaws. So I'd get one that is exactly how I want it with the modifications that I like. It will be based on an existing design, which is based on an LP from a luthier here, it won't be complete custom madness for 10,000 bucks, I just want to get it right and not miss anything.

The reality is the real froosh severely disabled this general over 3 year ago. This nu-froosh character is just picking the bones and finishing the job, if it's not just the actual froosh/roman, knowing his shenanigans over the years it would be no surprise. Who knows. There have been so many copycats at this point, I don't think even froosh himself can account for it all.

Feeling like shit lately. Every time I try to pick up the guitar and write something, nothing new comes out. I keep listening to mid-west emo stuff lately and I'm thinking this has something to do with it. I don't know, it feels easier to do something that I'm comfortable with and trying to be creative late just hasn't been working for the past few months. I keep thinking I'm a talentless hack but I know there's got to be some ideas knocking around there somewhere. I just changed my strings and I felt much better playing than I have recently so there's that. Any interesting chords you guys like to use that are "angular" sounding and in standard tuning?

I just had a band practice session today and had a heart to heart with everyone. Our drummer brought up how he felt like after 4 years of being together we haven't gotten much progress done, and that's true. He said he's lost the starry-eyed gaze that we had when we first started out and has become more realistic in his idea on where our band can go. Though he told us that he hasn't been putting in much effort in trying to get us shows and linking up with other local bands because of his job, he says he still loves playing with us and thinks we make better music now than we ever have before. Right now we're trying harder to book us some gigs and tomorrow we're going into the studio, but I'm extremely heartbroken because I feel like I'm chasing after something unrealistic and maybe I should quit while I'm ahead.

If you're planning a Kahler like pic related, and if you're somewhat confident with a router then it's only one hole you'd have to route on top. But I think with Kahlers it's preferred the neck be angled, but they were originally designed for Strat retrofits so you'll probably be fine. If you want a double-locking system, a Floyd nut is better, but it's not worth the work to retrofit one on a non-locking neck. The Kahler nuts are beyond easier to install, but I've seen them with varied success. Otherwise if you're not doing Kerry King wankery, you could look into locking tuners.

This is /gg/ in a nutshell. You have lifers and then you have the newbs who aggravate the shit out of them with dumbass questions because they're just going through a "guitar" phase and aren't serious about it at all.

All this general has ever been is that back and fourth. We're all losers with no place better to be but there's a deep distinction between the two types of people who post here.

Pro tip: if you're wondering which category you fall into then you're a newb. Lifers don't come to a shithole like 4chan and ask retarded questions about gear or music.

Get a cheap digital combo, like a Mustang GT or Line 6 or some shit like that. You can basically play them at any level (or headphones) and they're going to sound the same, unlike tube amps.

Gear snobs justifiably shit on them, because they are not something you should consider gigging/recording with (unless you specifically want a fake sound or are super lazy/broke/&c.), BUT they are a decent, cheap intro to the wide variety of guitar sounds you can get through different amp styles and effects.

From there you can branch out into "real gear" with a sense of what you're looking for, instead of just buying blind.

The fact that you worry about "meme or pleb shit" is meme and pleb shit in its own right. There's no escape.

So I figured I'd just ask here.

For any jazz dudes out there, on a ii V I do you put in a couple of altered tones from the V'alt into your ii licks? Just recently started learning jazz guitar and sticking with the notes in a chord for a ii V I w/ occasional chord extensions just sounds...like it's lacking something.
>>
>>74111855
I live in Florida and there are almost no music stores here at all in some areas. Across the panhandle there's not a single big music store any more
>>
>>74114127
First of all, I'm curious what you mean by "licks," because for me a lick is a phrase/soloing idea that's practiced rather than improvised. So in a jazz context, a soloist playing "licks" basically means there's very little in ways of improvisation.

Second, V's (and other chords functioning in a dominant manner) are probably the most "appropriate" play to insert altered/outside ideas, but by no means the only. You basically can make alterations/substitutions anywhere, and the preference for doing that varies from player to player.

I would suggest experimenting with it in as many variations you can think of, and studying other musicians solos to get a sense of their preferences. Right now it sounds like you're boxing yourself in a little to tight and methodically for the sake of being "correct."
>>
>>74114591
I guess I didn't really mean "licks" in that sense, more just whatever comes out of soloing over a ii V I.

It's just that whenever I see a tutorial about single-note soloing over a ii V I (or about soloing in general), the tutorial usually says something along the lines of "we'll just play through the root, third, and fifth--and hey, let's add a 9 in there and put in an approach tone in the beginning to spice things up" and it actually sounds interesting.

But when I try to improvise solo over a ii V I backing track with these things in mind, I just end up sounding...bland, I guess would be the best description. If I'm improvising over a ii V I in C major, on the ii I'll just do a quick C-D approach and then F A E D to mix things up, but it's still lacking something that other soloists seem to have.

From the terminology I've heard so far, it always sounds like I'm playing "inside." I'd like to be playing more "outside," but even with the altered scale I'm still sounding a bit inside. I'll try out different modes and whatnot and experiment. Cheers.

I mostly stick with Jeff Schneider for music theory and soloing stuff. This video is pretty much describing what I'm trying to achieve: a balance of playing inside and outside.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGwwKhNCIm4&t=75s

In terms of what I think is the ideal "outside" sound I'm trying to replicate to some degree, Yussef Kamaal has a guitarist that solos brilliantly. Hopefully I linked the right time in the video, this is a long performance:

https://youtu.be/AvFwjUZSkzg?t=30m47s

There are other points in the video where his solos are a bit faster, but I can't find them. This is the only one I could find offhand.
>>
>>74114855
>I guess I didn't really mean "licks" in that sense, more just whatever comes out of soloing over a ii V I.
I kind of figured, but I have also met people who tend to rely on stock licks a little too much when they're "improvising."

Anyways, don't be discouraged if things feel bland or forced in early stages, you're simply at a point where you're still getting a grasp on the ideas. It takes a long time to internalize this kind of stuff (and it's a perpetual work in progress).

On another note, I think there's merit in "methodical" outside ideas (studying specific scales, substitutions, etc.), but also play around with a sense of "freeness" that isn't simply going into the "proper" altered techniques. Do weird, unmethodical shit that you can't explain and see what happens. Doing that can take you to some interesting places. That cheesy old jazz quote "learn everything and then forget it" has a lot of truth to it.
>>
>>74114855
Try to play fewer notes and play a complete melody over several progressions rather than just separate "licks" on every chord. I have had the same problem with my Jazz soloing sounding pretty "corny" and a good piece of advice is to listen to some basic swing guys like Wes, Charlie Parker and even Django Reinhardt to get a good feel for the style. Soloing over basic 2 5 1s wont sound very contemporary or modern because its really not very contemporary harmony

Is my guitar posture shit? Have been playing for two months, thought I was getting along swimmingly, have learnt about 30 songs with some up to eight chords which I think is not bad for an adult learner, but I am really fucking struggling with the f barre chord. I need to be able to play it for the type of music I like.

I realised that I was holding the neck tilted away from me as in the pic, I find this most comfortable for my left wrist but I suspect this might be holding me back a bit? My fat bastard belly doesn't help. Anyone else play like this and does your performance suffer as a result?
>>
>>74114127
Usually V7alt sounds better when leading into a minor chord, like in a minor ii V i.

Like, play Am7b5, Dalt, Gm7.

People play Altered chords and licks and shit on V7's resolving to major chords, as well, but it's not as common and it usually doesn't sound as good in my opinion.

You should learn to play the Altered Scale (Also called the Super Locrian Scale and the 7th Mode of the Melodic Minor Scale) and dick around with that on altered dominant chords.

A really easy cheat way to get a similar effect as the Altered Scale is to play a Minor Pentatonic Scale on the Tonic minor chord of the key, but move the root notes down a half step.

Say you have a 2 chord jam going with 2 bars of Am7 and 2 bars of E7(alt), just going back and forth. You can jam in A Minor Pentatonic on the Am7 chord, then when the E7(alt) comes, just keep jamming A Minor Pentatonic but drop the root note down a half step to Ab instead of A.

So that covers the V i change, now just tack on a Bm7b5 at the beginning for your minor ii V i progression and you get some shit like this.

https://clyp.it/zhaupxuj

idk how to solo on a m7b5 chord to great cause I'm a little pussy so I just play the arpeggio.

I actually finally found a video that explained it well (Andy Guitar) and managed to barre all the chords on the first fret easily using a pincer shape with index finger straight rather than curved. Need to work on stretching the other fingers now but getting there at least. Also switching to light strings next time I change them, using medium gauge just now so that probably isn't doing me any favours.

Just noticed your post. I got a Seagull Entourage Mini Jumbo last month for £280 as my first acoustic (pic related), I absolutely love it and it was at a steal of a price. I am going to try and stick with it for a while and make my upgrade something very substantial a few years down the line, an all solid wood Martin or Gibson most likely.
>>
>>74116918
get a proper band fucking nerd weirdo
>>
>>74116987
nah
>>
>>74116984
Oh neat, yeah mine will be a coastline s6 spruce, apparently coastline means that the rop is pressure tested (whatever that means), and the S6 is just their take on the dreadnought, which is fine by me. I also really like their headstock design and the wider nut, pretty pumped to pick this up in the next few days. Oh and I never really mentioned, 250€ here in mainland europe, new it costs 500+ from what I could tell, 600+ for the one with the pickup. I kinda would have preferred something with a cutaway but this is literally my only complaint.

is this gud enoff to start doing lessons

If you have an interface, get a DAW, record whatever play it on loop and play over it
>>
>>74117110
I know that this would work but I'm kinda looking for a "1 button" solution specifically for looping, the only audio recording software that I got used to was audacity, lol.
>>
>>74117110
>>74117142
and I just checked, audacity literally can't do that.
>>
everybody watch out for the new pinnacle of bedroom reaper productions
https://clyp.it/c5gjat0n

>>74117194
audacity can loop stuff just hold shift while clicking play or pressing space
>>
>>74117208
yes but you can't record over it while it's looping, that's literally not possible.
>>
>>74117070
Definitely got a great price on that and should sound and look great. Will have a solid spruce top which gives it a very desirable aesthetic and sound. Uses laminate cherry sides like most Seagull guitars but it looks good and is apparently a very high quality laminate. The select pressure tested thing just means that it is a decent grade wood as far as I know.

My guitar was exchanged but had been practically unused, normally goes for £430 - £450. Has a solid cedar top, provides a warm sound and looks great in sunburst. Also smells lovely! ;)
>>
>>74117222
ah yeah, true, its not possible
download reaper, its easy to learn, same thing as audacity
>>
>>74117286
I found something that seems to work, ambiloop.
Doesn't reaper cost money after the trial period? Or did I misunderstand something there?
>>
>>74117726
you can still use the program after the trial period, just the nag screen makes you wait longer. it's only $60 and your license is good for this and the next major version. I'd probably wait a minute on buying, reaper 6 might be coming pretty soon.
>>
>>74117267
Cool, thanks for the info. Laminated sides and back don't bother me too much. Any tips what I should look for when I check the guitar out? The seller is saying it's in great condition, but of course he'd say that. Obviously I'll look for any cracks or shrinkage in the wood, I'll check the action, intonation and the trussrod, what else?

Is there any place where I can buy a mustang body just like this?
>>
have there been any Chinese knockoff versions of the e-bow?
>>
>>74118257
nah i dont think you can find these molecules elsewhere
>>
>>74118377
Aww, looks like I'm going to have to carve one myself then.
>>
>>74118218
Sounds like you know what you are doing. For that price a few minor scratches or tiny dents to the body and headstock would be fair enough, I wouldn't even bother haggling to be honest as you won't find better at that cost assuming the guitar is as described.
>>
>>74118452
I don't haggle in person, especially not when we decided on a price beforehand. I just want to be able to spot any major issues that it might have, something that would make me not buy it at all. But I guess those should be obvious.

Nice! I'm digging the cherry burst. $300 is insane... What's the back story?
>>
>>74119014
Haha, clean them knobs. Some dirty-handed guitarist got all over them.
>>
i bet you cant tell which amps are these
https://clyp.it/axzuge4a
>>
>>74119187
Thanks man! I'm really loving the cherry burst too hadn't seen it irl before this one actually

The backstory is that I work in a small mom and pop music store and one of the teachers had a roommate that left the country and had to leave the guitar behind, came into work and asked 300 for it. Honestly I wasn't looking for a guitar but that price I figured fuck it

>>74119242
Haha yeah thats the next thing I need to do, changed strings, cleaned up the rest of it I just forgot the knobs actually
>>

For that price, I would even buy a Les Paul!

>but I am really fucking struggling with the f barre chord
Everybody struggles with barre chords, it's just finger strength at first, then figuring out exactly how much strength to use in order to not cramp up over long periods of playing.

Keep at it, do small adjustments to the angle of your fingers.

t. some asshole with arthritis in the fingers.
>>
>>74122871
Wasn't the guitar that fucked me over, but disc prolapse, OA and the start of stenosis doesn't help.
I bought a Yamaha APX recently, it's comfy as fuck to play since it doesn't weigh much at all.
