Should I get an acoustic guitar? I kinda want something with a wider nut, but I just can't find an electric that does that. That and strumming chords just sounds so much better on an acoustic.

You never asked for it brother, you said you didn't have the money for one and I offered help. Just cause I earned it don't mean I spent it. The bands don't get much, I get like $110 to $300 a gig depending on the siatuation. We get a lot of grad parties and weddings this time of year, around August it slows down a lot til late september. I'm only doing ridiculous hours at work cause we lost 5 guys to a different energy company. Things will slow down. If we loved a bit closer i'd just make you a new nut, I'm about to buy the files off StewMac once I actually get a chance to use them. Brasil is a little bit too far from the midwest for that though.

Samuel, I'm going out to get wasted now.

Here it is: post a pic of your Les Paul with an address clearly written on a piece of paper and I'll send a money order to the address. I'll post pics here so you can see when it's coming.

Then understand I don't care what happens to it after I put it into the mail but if it does arrive I'd like you to post pics of you opening the letter.

If you get it, cool. If not who gives a shit. If you want the money just post the pic and I'll send it.

Bringing the discussion back to guitar stuff a bit...

I recently played through the most perfect amp I've ever heard: a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. I mostly play single-coil guitars like Strats, and every single guitar I've played through that amp sounds AMAZING. I don't know what it is about the Hot Rod amps in particular, but they give every note so much character. I think what I love most about it is the amp's natural distortion: it breaks up in this very Hendrix-ish way. My Egnater head sounds incredibly sterile in comparison.

>>74080157
Idk, I've played through an Axe-FX before and while I think it's great for a more modern high-gain sound, it doesn't have that "bite" that some tube amps have.

If you kinda know the genre you wnat, you should study songs similar to that genre, copy them, study their tricks, try to reproduce them similarly but not exactly, gather a lot of those resources so that once oyu master them you can use them in different ways and create something new

tips for improving at speed excersises?

i just grab one excersise, warm up at slow tempo then start 20 bpm lower than my limit tempo, then see if i can play it perfect 2 times in a row, if i can, increase 5bpm if i cant decrease 5bpm.

Will this make me play good?

Depends I guess. It can be easy enough to go from 80 to 100 (accurate to a click) but it takes much longer to go from 100 to 120. Above that is lunacy unless you're "cheating" and play less notes per beat. You want to have about 4 notes per beat or so. At least that's what I do. It can be beneficial to pack some more in as it helps with keeping time.

I wouldn't worry about how long it takes, make a small goal and meet it in a few weeks. Say increasing 5 bpm.

>>74090095
I would definitely not practice the same sequence over and over again ad nauseam. That's a great way to get bored and it won't prepare you for actually playing music. If you only practice 12-14-15-14-12 (e string), you're gonna flub when you have to move to another string mid-sequence. It helps to have that muscle memory already built up. You get that by practicing a bunch of sequences of all types, 4/4, 3/4, triplets, 1 string, 3 strings, chromatic, skipping around, etc. So I would find a bunch, and play them all until you're sick of them and then play them more. Seek out sequences that are tough for you and make you slip up then make them your bitch. That will help more than anything.

This applies for all types of picking, though I'm mostly talking about alternate here. Hope that helps dude.

ok WHAT THE FUCK

My fuckdamn bass strings are too high beyond the 12th fret, at the 21st fret its about 0.5' of relief insteand of 0.02'.
I'm new to setting up guitars, but tightened the truss rod to make the neck as straight as possible without giving any buzz and lowered the saddles as far as they will go.
It's slightly less than 0.02 relief at the first fret without any buzz, adjusting the truss made it lower here but its still bullshit at the other end?
Whats wrong here? Does it need a shim in the neck joint? To be fixed by a luthier?
Above the 12th fret its all good low action, below is almost impossible to play yet the neck is straight.

I'm new to setting up guitars and all

how the fuck have you managed to play guitar for five years without being able to sing to it?

Yes thats completely normal, sometimes you have bad days and of course it can/will take years or a lifetime to master an instrument. I play drums, guitar, bass and some other stuff for a long time and am still always learning.
Going through that rote basic is really boring but will pay off as you learn more stuff and can be mixed into what you do.
If you get bored of the basics, you could just listen to your favourite artists and copy what they do, learn from them.

a shim on the neck joint would do the exact same effect on the action as lowering the bridge. unless you cant lower it any more

>>
>>74092592

Yeah I couldn't lower it anymore so had to shim up. It might need a thicker shim to get a perfect balance of string height along the neck but that would involve fucking around with the truss some more.
Havent tested it with the amp yet but I'm sure the vibration transfer loss would be minimal and certaintly worth it for a playable instrument.

Is mahogany just a worse wood for the neck of a guitar than hard rock maple? I may have a custom LP style (ish) guitar built and I wonder whether a maple neck would make more sense.
In general it'll be a mahogany body with flamed maple top, 2 humbuckers, 3-way toggle switch, 2 mini switches (serial parallel single coil for each pickup), 2x tone 2x volume, 24 frets, a more modern headstock design to get rid of the tuning issues and the headstock issues, etc.

What I'm still wondering, do LP bridges (tune o matic style) have issues (I'm happy to go for a more modern bridge design) and is maple just better for the neck than mahogany? Bass necks are under much more tension and I rarely see a complete mahogany bass neck, if they are mahogany then it's always multi layer and mixed with other woods there.

Any input? What other modernisations would you like on your personal LP? Do LPs tend to headdive? I saw that the strap button doesn't even reach the 14th fret.

Not only was it just sandpaper, and just sandpaper so haphazardly put in it fucked up the neck even more, but a piece of sandpaper the size of a cig butt.
So they used it as a cheap fix for a shitty design and also cheaped out on the amount of sandpaper "shim" going into each one.

Pretty gay for a €700 bass, looks like I wont be buying anything made in Asia ever again until I can buy it practically for free.

G&L you said? That's just fucked up, I heard good things about these guys even the tribute line. I assume you live in the US? There are some amazing, smaller manufacturers in europe, and for 800-1200 you could have gotten something made in Europe at (almost) custom shop niveau, better than mass produced mia fenders. I would assume you have similar manufacturers in america somewhere but I have no clue about the market there.
>>
>>74093436
make sure you get 10% off of everything at guitar center.
>>
>>74093705
>>74093886
And what I also wanted to say, shimming is kind of a shitty fix for a bad design but it has essentially zero effect on the sound. My bass has a shim in the neck pocket and it sounds amazing, but I'm pretty sure it is supposed to be a proper shim made out of a wood veneer.

I'm pretty sure making an angled neck pocket was harder back in the day and/or at least it was more machine time and not that easy for CNC machines (someone correct me if I'm talking bs here) so that's why this solution became so popular, a very quick and easy fix that works really well if it's done right. Fender also used to make guitars that had a screw to tilt the neck, they dropped that though.

They are made properly but the finishing touches are awful, ther most obvious being drilled holes and filed nuts without the excess material being sanded away, and this shim bullshit. I cant blame these sweatshop workers for not giving a fuck when they are being disrespected with shit wages.

So many aspects of electric guitars are pure shitty design, bolt on necks, gibson headstocks, floyd rose etc. The shim works well and I'm happy with it, not a big deal to do it.

Sandberg and Maruszczyk. You can find Maruszczyk basses (and mensinger guitars, the same people are building them) at public-peace.de
They're made in Poland and at least my bass, and the basses of other people on forums, are really great. 800-900 for a basic model (with superb pickups though) but also ridiculously customizable if you want to go that way, etc.

Sandberg just make amazing basses (they also make guitars but nobody really stocks them afaik), a basic J, P or MM style bass should set you back 1200-1300. They are superb and super consistent since they use a PLEK machine for the fretwork.

Reading through my post again, I swear I'm not a shill, but both of these basses I own are just so much better than any MIA fender I ever tried.
>>
>>74094022
Yup, I thought as much about the body, but I'm not 100% sure if the body won't be somewhat slimmer. I'm still not sure about the neck, a nice hardrock maple neck, in my head, just seems like it's more stable. Maybe it's completely irrational, I don't know.
>>
What's a good guitar with the same quality of a gibson les paul but without the overblown price for the headstock? Something around the 1000-1800 range?
>>
>>74094188

Those Maruszczyk basses look fucking sick, cant believe I never heard of them. A friend of mine is sponsored by a Polish bass drum pedal manufacturer, a very small company but they make really good stuff even though they are unknown.
I always thought Sandberg were just meme djent 13 sting wanksticks, looks like they have some nice basses too.
In future all my guitar stuff will be made properly by people who are being paid properly. I'm a huge fan of pearl drums and though they are made in Taiwan it pretty hard to fuck up a drum.

>Those Maruszczyk basses look fucking sick, cant believe I never heard of them.
Check them out, they also have a configurator under "custom shop" so you can see how much you'd pay for a customized bass. They actually seem to have raised their prices recently, I saw several of their basses for 800-900. Also, I don't know about their own "maruszczyk" pickups, but delano and haeussel are just top notch. They also have a shitton of demo videos for all kinds of pickups and basses on their youtube channel, public peace.

>I always thought Sandberg were just meme djent 13 sting wanksticks, looks like they have some nice basses too.
That's Strandberg, you're not the first to confuse the two. Sandberg is a German company, the basses are made in Germany (except for the Electra line, the sub 1000€ basses) and, as I said, PLEK'd so the fretwork is just superb (and should be ridiculously consistent). Electronics are made from Glockenklang for them (so it says "sandberg electronics" on their active basses sometimes) and the pickups are delano (again, some of them made specifically for sandberg so they say "sandberg pickups"), I think they make their bridges and tuning machines in korea, but I've never had an issue with them. They also have a configurator on their website if you want to play around with different woods, finishes, hardware colour, scale lengths, etc.

They're a classic design, many people's heroes have played them so they love them and want to play them as well.
>sound like shit
Maybe you don't like humbuckers in general? There's pros and cons and you can always split them to single coils.
>all of those knobs
The idea behind it is that you "set" a tone and volume for the neck and "set" a tone and volume for the bridge pickup and then don't touch it anymore. Basically your lead sound from the bridge (maybe tone all the way up and full volume) and your rhythm sound from the neck (maybe more quiet, so less overdrive, and slight tone cut). While you're playing you literally just switch between them and you also have the "somewhere in the middle" option. That's the gist of how they're supposed to be used.

is a standard strat hss a good guitar? ive never played electric. i can get one for a little under $400 in good condition
>>
>>74094655
I play a boss katana 100 in an apartment, at the 0.5W setting. I also have a tiny 5W bass amp with a 410 cabinet set up. I asked the neighbours (specifically the ones living below me) and they said you can kinda hear it but it's no big deal. I make sure not to play on holidays/sundays and at night, obviously. Again, no issues whatsoever so far.

A Fender Standard, made in mexico? Not a Squier? Yeah, should be more than fine. HSS is nice and flexible and with a mim fender you shouldn't have any real issues.

Get off this board fucktard, the next time I see you post stupid shit here I'm going to strangle an infant.

>fuck Gibson, Fender and Marshall too for charging 5x the price for these features and only giving you an Indonesian tier guitar for €1000.
>The big brand stuff has gotten insane recently.
That's literally the conclusion I came to, they charge ridiculous amounts of money for these mass produced guitars while people here, locally, are making them better for less money. I'm not willing to pay for Fenders or Gibsons advertising campaign.
I'd still urge you to try them at a store if you have the chance though. That alone, comparing them to the big brands, made me confident in ordering one, don't just trust some random guy on 4chan and see it for yourself (should be possible with sandberg at a large music store, not really possible with maruszczyk sadly).

>>74094952

You are lucky to have cool neighbours, last night my neighbours had a party and rented a big sound system playing ZZ top and ACDC until 3 in the morning.
It was so loud it sounded like the real ACDC was playing next door, the bass drum was reverberating off all the houses around the area, nobody said shit.
Nothing worse than nazi neighbours who make you walk on eggshells in your own home.

Youre inferior non knowledge powers do nothign to me, so prepare to fight with thoughts or be declared inferiors to me dear sir.
>>
>>74095116
Well, if they had such parties every week then I wouldn't be too happy about that either, both extremes kinda suck in that regard. But apparently one or two hours of my horrible playing a day are acceptable, one of my neighbours even told me that he liked hearing it from time to time and that he could tell that my playing was improving, that was super nice.
>>
>>74095132
Atleast I don't look like a fucking idiot playing my strat. The fucking les paul looks like a pear.

is that what they call an archtop? for what genres of guitar playing is it good?
>>
>>74095222
yes it is good
>>
>>74095192

>you turn on your amp
>tuning up the guitar
>before you have even tuned all 6 strings you hear a frantic knocking on the door

It's your neighbour telling you to shut the fuck up because he has to get up at 3 am to go to work in some shithole.
Thats killing your whole vibe.

>>74095173

It's only every few months, I play the drums so had to go into work today with 2 hours sleep and had no moral leg to stand on.
>>
>>74095247
for the what genres of guitar is it for the playing of of good?
>>
>>74095222
Yeah that's an archtop, the top is literally arched like a violin or cello, not flat like a classical guitar or a normal steel string acoustic guitar.

Many of them aren't even fully acoustic though, they have a "sustain block" going through the entire length of the body, which means it's actually an electric guitar with hollow wings, a semi-hollow. The "original" archtop guitars back in the day didn't have any pickups and were obviously fully acoustic, the pickups came later.

>It's only every few months, I play the drums so had to go into work today with 2 hours sleep and had no moral leg to stand on.
I wouldn't have an issue with that if they let you know in advance, should be standard if you're having a planned party and you know that it'll get louder.

Jazz. They were used for Jazz mostly, or at least that's what they're famous for. They're even called jazz guitars sometimes. Jesus, calm down.
>>
>>74095320

They are nice enough to invite me everytime even though I never go.
The only problem is driving and working without sleep and potentially being injured because of it.
>>
>>74095266
ahh it kills the little princess' vibe
>>
>>74095181
Enjoy having 2 settings out of 5 where you can get a subpar humbucking effect.
Unless you like listening to every power grid with a 5 mile radius through your amp that is.
>>
>>74095365
Oh yeah, obviously that sucks. Proper earplugs every few months? I know it sucks that you would need to prepare for that and deal with it, but I personally would try to deal with it before trying to police the neighbourhood.

Dad said he'd get me a Stratocaster if I could play some Beatles tunes for him.

Is Fender a good choice? Some of my friends have Fenders but my budget is a little bigger than theirs was at the time of buying.

I'm thinking of something in the 1000$ range, possibly a bit more if it's worth it.
>>
>>74095359
>Jesus, calm down.
what if i told you i was gifted one of those but i am a shit player and can barely play blues much less jazz. But the guitar sounds so fucking good i just want to learn jazz just to play it
>>
>>74095429

Why do you care about budget if daddy is paying for it?
>>
>>74095323
Steve Howe of Yes has used his ES-175 since before he joined the band and still uses one as his main guitar.
Don't believe the instrument will limit what you can play with it.
>>
>>74095429
That would easily get you a made in mexico strat or a higher end ibanez super strat (different animal, but you might like it) or something along those lines. If you have the option then go to a store and test out a bunch of stuff in your price range, but getting a mexican strat and maybe having it adjusted, set up and "polished up" by a proper luthier (don't let guitar center or someone like them work on it) would be a solid choice.
>>
>>74095400
no its not a humbucking effect because its wired in parallell not series. turn out the bookreading genius has never read a book of electrics
>>
>>74095429
Get yourself a used Japanese strat. You won't regret it
>>
>>74095414

I agree with you that moderation is best, but just saying musicans who are able to practice in peace dont know how lucky they are. I have a set of electronic drums and it causes a lot of fights with my neighbours wherever I went. Even though I'm listening on headphones the people below can still hear the bass pedal through their roof and always went nuts until I was banned from playing, that left me with no particular purpose.
When my nieghbours do it now I just suffer it out and hope they have a good time.
>>
>>74095453
You can play metal on it, you can learn fingerpicking on it and play classical guitar pieces, you can play blues, jazz, funk or whatever else on it. It's a guitar, you don't need to play jazz on it just because that's what they are known for. Teles are associated with country music and there are some metal bands that use them, it doesn't matter.

But do learn jazz, it's great fun to play and you'll be forced to learn music theory.
>>
Might be a dumb place to ask, but does anyone here know an app that lets you record audio and isn't shitty adware or something? For some reason my smartphone doesn't have a fucking audio recorder
>>
>>74095533
Then I'll feel really lucky from now on that I can do just that. I can genuinely practice in peace except for upright bass, I have to have an electric one at home. It's not the same but any actual acoustic UB with a proper endpin would be unbearable for my neighbours.
>>
>>74095535
why did they make archtops without soundholes even before they had electric pickups
also is there an archtop with a bridge pickup? but like a jazz hollowbody not just a semihollow like a es335
