How do I get better at guitar?
I don't mean necessarily writing music. I frankly don't have the time to dedicate a large amount of time to Guitar, but I do have the chance to practice for about 10-15 minutes twice a day, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less.
I have 0 problems with tabs, and I can decorate chord-only sheets decently well.. but where do I go from here? How do I begin getting truly good at guitar? People that hear me play say that I'm fantastic but frankly it doesn't feel like it, since all that I can do well is play from sheets that others wrote, riff a *tiny* bit, and make progressions not sound super shitty.

>People that hear me play say that I'm fantastic but frankly it doesn't feel like it, since all that I can do well is play from sheets that others wrote, riff a *tiny* bit, and make progressions not sound super shitty.

that's all anyone ever does bro. Only thing that separates people like us and the guitar grandmasters is they have played so much they memorized tons of songs front to back and know the patterns to them.

I remember once Satriani was giving a lesson and someone told him to play stairway. He played the first few notes then couldn't figure out the rest and just said "lol idk" You think jimmi hendrix improvised the star spangled banner? Hell no, he spend weeks practicing it and memorizing exactly how he would play it. If you spent as long as these guys do thinking about one song you'd eventually get really, really good at it, but then try to play something else you don't know as well and you fall flat. There's not going to be a magic moment where you can just play everything.

Playing by ear and all that bullshit isn't an acquired skill, it's just autists who memorized a ton of shit. No different from guys who memorize digits of pi.

>>
>>73769156

there's no such thing as left/right handedness on guitar. You use both hands to play, how can you say one way is left and one is right?

Think about it, you're either using your dominant hand to finger chords or using it to pick. Both take equal amounts of dexterity. They're just different ways of playing, has nothing to do with whether you're right or left handed

Ultex and celluloid have a brighter sound when hitting the string I.E. a better attack. It took me getting used to the Ultex because it's so bright. But it's well worth it and they are tough as all hell.
Every time I've used a Tortex it just sounded dull compared to both cell and Ultex..
>>
>>73773757
hmm sounds like a better pick
hows the midrange and the lows though?

They're fine as the string resonance takes over after the initial attack is gone. Of course the fresher the strings the better.

Important reminder:

Metal is the worst genre of music ever. It's not necessarily even the music that makes this the case though, but the people who are into metal.

Metal guitarists and fans are greasy, disgusting, female repellent, untalented, wastes of space. Every single one of them is a cunt.

You all dress the same, look the same, have the same haircut, play the same music, play the same licks, even play the same fucking guitars and move in the same ways.

Could one or two of you guys do me a huge favor? I'm really not sure what classifies as a "low" action on guitar. I know it very well on my basses but I'm really not sure here.
If you have a guitar set up with a low or very low action could you capo the first fret (or press the string down with your finger, to eliminate nut height from the equation) and measure the height from the 12th fret (or any fret really) to the low E and high E string?

It would be awesome to have proper measurements for this stuff so I know in what ballpark I am in regards to string height.

I want to be able to start making music in at least a year 1/2 - 2 years. I just picked up guitar and have been using justin guitar for lessons. It was really helpful at first but I no longer feel like I am making progress. I'm 22 and feel like time is ticking if i want to make music one day.

When did you guys start playing? How long did it take you to get "good" and guitar? How many hours do you practice and how many days a weeks? How long did it take for you to start writing your own music? How old are you now?

Good as a modding platform. Get one, install new pickups, do a proper fret job and re-do the wiring if necessary or desired and you'll be good to go. Potentially swapping the bridge or tuning machines as well if they're not good enough for you. Oh and replace the crappy plastic nut that most come with.
That is if you buy the super cheap models, I'm not sure if the more expensive ones are worth it but I heard they're actually pretty decent if you don't have super high standards.

21 and picked up guitar few months ago (having background in bass) and started learning a fuckton of chords, playing everyday (30minutes to 3 hours). Just get a library of chords into your head, learn different strumming patterns, practice to a metronome and you're good to go.

If your main focus is songwriting, then being great technically doesn't mean shit if you can't build a nice melody.

Weak bait
>>
>>73777798
How is this bait? I'm sick of retards saying my posts are "bait" because they were offended in some way.

It's true, the reason guitar music is dying is because it's full of absolute faggots. Reminds me of that Rollins interview (although I hate him too) when he was being interviewed by that poser kid.

Some people just get it... others don't and never will.

At the end of the day, it's all about good music, and creating good music... some just don't have it in them.

A good artist is a good leader with a vision, not some weak bedroom noodler who got into guitar as escapism from being wedgied by some fuck in high school.

If they were passionate about music, they wouldn't give a fuck about none of that.

Right. i mean it would be cool if there would any bands to revive rock music. of 70's and 80's era because we are really missing that. even nu metal sort of went away.
we have influx of blues, jazz and metal and it seems like those 3 genres are automatically occupied by new musicians.
i probably listened to alot of bands by now and i think i didn't even see ONE guy or a band that composed classical music other than movie type composers that do scores and soundtracks.

Have the composition link the different instruments together and create depth from that.
Cynic does that extremely well by having the bass "mimicking" the riffs but not outright playing them

Dysrhythmia takes another approach and just makes it almost impossible to distinguish between the guitar and the bass at some times.

I don't actually know why Mustaine left Jackson in the first place. Usually guitar companies lure (some) artists with hefty endorsment contracts. I know for sure that his latest deal with Dean was just because they offered him huge amount of money he couldn't decline the offer.

I don't know which guitarist has actually good signature line, something which is actually in line with quality. Probably Petrucci with his 3k+ guitars? Too bad the shape is bit goofy imho.

Also surprised that Friedman's latest signature model has 'only' 22 frets. Considering he is a "shredder". It's good looking guitar for sure. On his promo video about the new MF-1 model he explained something that he wants to hear each and every note with total and complete clarity, and he hates when you fret a note and the string starts to resonate against the fret. That's probably one reason he opted for tuning pegs on both sides of the nut. But usually...just increasing string height should do the trick anyway...

I agree, the Music Man looks too rounded, too bottom heavy and the nut somehow resembles a clef. Petrucci admitted in recent interview that altough people like the specs of the guitar and how it plays and sounds they haven't been too keen on how it looks in the past. But 'recently' that opinion has changed a bit.
>>
>>73780148
I absolutely love the shape of this guitar. Too bad that every review I have checked out has said that it isn't that good of a deal for $600 bucks. I have to try one out at my local guitar store whenever I have a chance. I agree, it really is bizarre that Marty Friendman opted for only 22 frets, when he himself loves to go to those higher up frets a lot(Hangar 18, etc). Marty is a really weird fellow, and that shows on his playing, that's why it is so great.
>>
>>73780081
Check out Gorguts/Krallice while you're at it, they share some members with Dysrhythmia and they're about as intricate.

>>73780069
Some artists signed at Ibanez get some rather unique stuff. Tosin Abasi's got a "not-strandberg" with an asymetrical neck profile, Fredrik Thordendal has two signatures, one of which being a massive 30" scale length 8 string, the other being a unique shape, Pablo Gilberto has his Fireman, Joe satriani's got his own shape too.
I think it's better than just taking a regular shape, slapping a name on it and saying "hey look, buy this shit".

JP's Majesty don't look so jarring in real life though.

I think, for him for example the success in life has come from the fact that he has been on constant move. First he accuired his huge talent by practicing few years sitting inside his bedroom while living in Hawaii and after that he's been utilizing his skills. Never staying too long in one place.

That's totally different from other people's normal lives with loans and credit cards, dead end jobs.... Usually we all are more or less slaves to something.

Yeah, I mean, he could have stayed on megadeth, and literally just play Rust In Peace on repeat, and he would still make bank. However, he got tired of playing metal, and decided to move to Japan, and do his own thing. He even hosted a tv show on Japan, a gaijin had his own channel on one of the most xenophobic countries of all time. To me, that is huge. I've been a long time follower of these guys, both Dave and Marty. Some thing what I don't understand is that his reason to quit Megadeth was that he wanted to play 'more melodic' music and Megadeth was always 'gun metal grey'. Looking the material he puts out now is still metal but it's just very progressive. And he also did few melodic solo records while he was playing in Megadeth...so he had big opportunity to express himself artistically while still playing high speed metal riffage.

I'm sure there was something happening behind the scenes what they haven't publicly told.

He just got tired of dealing with Mustaine's shit. I mean, even David Ellefson got tired of Mustaine's shit, enough to even sue him. It's a shame really, because Marty Friedman, and Mustaine had something special. In my opinion, one of the best guitar duos of all time. Mustaine as the riff god, and Friedman as the lead god. I would have loved to see how Friedman's current style of playing would have blended with Megadeth. I know they wouldn't have released something as good as Rust in Peace, but boy would it have been fun.

Just get V shape... It's cool guitar and actually much better to play while sitting down than regular strat shaped one because V is properly between your legs. Dean is probably not good idea but there's loads of other brands.

I see, so that's why every female guitarist that I see plays a tele. Really interesting. Never seen one playing a casino though.

Yep, one's weakness was the other one's strength. I pray everyday that we can at least get an album from those two, together in the future. Preferably with a decent drummer, (Dave Lombardo plz). May Gar Samuelson, and Nick Menza rest in peace.

that's sexy. no idea what you paid for it but i know they average $1100-$1500 depending on the condition.

These guys could die any minute now. Dave is going bald and looking at his earlier life it's surprise he doesn't have hepatitis c.

But the sad thing is that if you like certain kind of music, mostly which were invented in 80s, you have this huge bunch of guys born approximately during same time (from about 65 or so and even bit earlier). They all get to old age mostly same time and probably die off like flies in the future. Priest, Maiden, 2 bands starting with M and lot of others. They are all mostly same age.

>Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman might die in your lifetime.

Fuck you for reminding me of that. I need to see them live at least once before they bite the bullet.

I legit don't know how Dave isn't straight up dead at this point, the dude did EVERYTHING that could get him killed in one way or another. Dude even dealt with black magic lol. The fact that he is still kicking to this day, is enough to make any non-believer believe in miracles.

It's sad really. There's a lot of amazing band nowadays, but sadly, rock/metal, will never be as big, or powerful as it once was. Maybe a few years in the future when people get tired of electronic music, and shitty pop, and want to listen to something more "analogous", maybe then guitar music will make a comeback.

This is what I fear that once the big generation of guitar players (not only in metal but there's loads of other players too) the guitar music will die, or at least go into this very niche place. I don't know. I don't have much hope for the future of mankind anyway so it doesn't probably matter that much. But all the way before 1990 guitar was pretty dominant in all kinds of pop music but after that it's been nonexistent.
>>
>>73781801
More like

>femanon gets triggered by a simple joke made by another anon, because she has no social interactions besides 4chan. Making her unable to take a joke.

>>
>>73781635
wow that's a good deal for an amazing amp. JCM900's are hard to find in that good a shape, they're usually pretty heavily beat up; like any good piece of equipment, it gets used alot. and you can always get new black tolex covering and grate mesh for dirt cheap. you did good, anon.
>>
>>73781836
I mean, if you wanna blame someone, blame computers. Computers singlehandly both killed, and keeps guitar music relevant for the masses. Sounds like an oxymoron, but hear me out. It "killed" guitar music because computers can make any sound in history, at the click of a mouse, more efficiently, and cheaper than paying a bunch of musicians to play a music piece. However, computers keep guitar music relevant, because people have more access to different bands by said click of a mouse. I believe that guitar music still has some gas on the tank, and I honestly don't care if it "dies" for the general population. As long as we, musicians, keep it alive on our own "niche" space.
>>
>>73781945
Yes because females should enjoy when you make misogynistic jokes based on the objectification of women in online groups. btw I have no problem with lgbt people and am bi myself, it's just terfs are unbelievably stuck up and retarded, much like you.

What is the best emulation software to get decent metal and rock sounds? I have used Amplitube but for example it's JCM-800 emulation sounds tinny as shit no matter how much EQ I add. It lacks depth and always sounds really really dry and treble is overwhelming everything. Or maybe I just suck.

Make sure your Barre is right in front of the fret. not directly above the fret, and not too far behind the fret.

Generally speaking, always pressing the string right before the fret produces the cleanest sound and make it easier to play imo
>>
>>73782194
You fucked up. You blew your cover. Now I know you are just baiting me. Now you are a programmer all of the sudden? This is bait. No female would be smart enough to be a programmer, or be a guitarist. You made it too obvious on your last replies. Nice try though, try harder next time.

lol women love being objectified, they crave it
it's in their nature

pretty little ornaments love when a guy tells them what to do

when will this meme of feminism fucking end?

why can't women just admit they love being bossed around and made to bend over and fucked from behind like an animal?
i always found it ironic that 9 out of 10 women's favourite position is literally called doggy style but they're all into feminism online cos "we're all equal"

fuck off dumb cunts, just accept who you are already

The guitars in both sound too bright and over-powering. Partly the mix and partly the tone. At 14 seconds on the second track it sounds like the lick was flubbed. Too bad because it fits there. On the same track somewhere near the beginning, I heard two "lazy" notes just before a verse. Even though I don't like the language, I can admit that the singers had their shit together.
>>
>>73782724
I prefer the first, but like >>73783023 said, the acoustic guitar takes up too much space in the mix, and the bass is also obscured by the second singer. The bass should be brought up in the mix, and the acoustic guitar lowered
