It's a lot more normie friendly, because most post metal and stoner/doom doesn't have edgy things as it's primary aesthetic. Other than a few disgusting wookie hippies at a Sleep concert, most people looked pretty normal at the few 'hipster metal' concerts I've been to. Also most people I've encountered that like buttmetal and nu metal have found instrumental doom like ufomammut and bongripper cool, like, "whoa dude this is like pantera but slower xD". With that said I'm sure it's true that the hipsters that are into metal are into this sort of metal.
