I've been on this ride for about 2 years now. Discovered her music and got into it pretty heavily. If you're asking why the hype exists, I think it might be that she was very grassroots. Came out of fucking nowhere, started a music career (has no real background in music apparently) and just straight up exploded.

I think people get affixed to these stories because it gives people hope that they too can find relevance and validation in this world. That she came out of nowhere and became so widely known and toured and met with such success is why the hype exists.

Whether she's objectively good or bad (at making music) is subjective and really up to individual tastes. I think she's pretty damn good, unique even in my opinion. Yeah your play by play is fairly accurate. I'd say it isn't uncommon for people to come up out of nowhere. I think it's her lack of musical background that has allowed her to truly be experimental.

Now granted, I don't have a musical background either so my deduction of her skill is based purely on how well her music jives with my mind. Again, not everything she makes is magic to me. In fact, most people like Visions and I don't really put it that high up on my list of favorite albums.

I hate to be that person, but to really get what the hype is about you'll just have to go over some of her music. If you want suggestions or want to let me know some of your tastes I can point you towards what you might want to hear.

Every album she's made is different. They each play to different crowds so you may like or not like her music from album to album. I'd honestly suggest going into some of her unreleased work because there's a lot of great stuff in there too.
