Would absolutely LOVE that, although desu what she's doing right now (with regards to flirting with pop music conventions) actually comes out as more interesting in a way. Grimes' music already has a textural/timbral complexity to it that feels imo much more typical of something like ambient or classical music rather than pop. Hearing pop music with that sort of thing is extremely rare, whereas hearing ambient/classical with it is almost a matter of course. Tbh I probably wouldn't be listening to pop music AT ALL today if not for having stumbled on Grimes' music last year.

Cool to hear. It took me around a week-and-a-half of constant listening to her discography before I was able to decide whether I absolutely loved or hated it (eventually decided on love - she's currently my favorite living musical artist.) Discovering her music was a VERY strange experience for me in general desu.

Usually I do the following when I first discover an artist:
(1. Listen through their entire discography once (in chronological order - as God intended.)
(2. Pick out the individual albums/eps/singles that I liked.
(3. Listen to them on repeat until I can't stand most of their tracks.
(4. Pick out the individual tracks that still appeal to me.
(5. Listen to those on shuffle/repeat until I can't stand most of them.
(6. Add the remainder to my permanent music collection (usually between 2-8 tracks per artist.)

With Grimes, I was never able to properly get past step 3. I just kept listening - waiting for certain songs to become less interesting than others - until 1.5 months later it suddenly dawned on me that I hadn't listened to non-Grimes music in all that time/that I was beginning to develop noticeable tinnitus from virtually constant listening, and I had to immediately stop listening to any of it for the next several months in order to maintain my sanity/hearing. To this day, there still aren't any true Grimes songs (which is to say, ones produced by her) that I still can't listen to pretty much endlessly on repeat.

The genre titles seen on the periphery are approximate sonic reference points for people unfamiliar with Grimes' music to use in finding the easiest path (for them) to get into her music. Again, the point of the chart isn't to precisely categorize where Grimes' records fit in terms of imo largely antiquated genre distinctions. The point is to assist new listeners in identifying the best place to start with her music based on their own pre-existing musical tastes.

Tbh I was originally going to use some form of "indie" to describe Geidi Primes. But the problem there is that ALL of her records are indie - technically speaking. And the whole point of the chart is to give an idea of how her records differ from each other. Thus also why your suggestion of labeling them all as "electronic/experimental/ambient" (imo an absolutely accurate thing to say) would be pointless to this specific chart's purpose.

I find it ALL incredibly unnerving desu. 98% of her graphic art creeps me the hell out. But I'm sure that's the point - so I'm largely okay with it.

Tbh her art reminds me in a way of H.R. Giger's. Although with some very major differences (e.g. switch out Giger's obsession with rounded surfaces and eroticism for jagged, fuzzy edges where such things shouldn't be possible and cartoonish gore.)

I don't know if it's substances I need to be on or what. But most of it makes no sense to me. Albeit very cool. Some of it reminds me of art you'd see back in the 90's on skateboards and stuff. Me too, actually (although Art Angels follows close on Halfaxa's heels for me because of how great the production on it sounds.) Tbh Darkbloom would be my hands-down favorite release of hers to date if it were only longer (it's like the darker sonics of Halfaxa mixed with the improved production of Visions.)

I'm actually very optimistic that her next record is gonna be more along the lines of Darkbloom than anything else she's done so far. Art Angels overall was about as aggressively bright/fast-paced/upbeat of an album as you can get without killing people from the sugar high, and I HIGHLY doubt she is gonna try to top that anytime soon. She's even stated semi-recently in an interview that slow and stately is where she is heading next.

Art Angels is too... I dunno... poppy. but I unapologetically love World Princess 2 because it sounds fuckin' cool. Enjoyable but I dunno.

I saw Grimes at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn?t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
