Mingus the Merciless edition
What have you been listening to lately and how is it? Any recent purchases?
What jazz albums do you think are the most underrated?
Post/share/discuss jazz.
Man, how Mingus was Merciless.
Why does jazz sound like shit?

he wasn't merciless if you knew your shit
>>73435240
Why can't ur mum take a hit? Haha sry I couldn't resist
>>73435271
merely a play on Ming the Merciless I assure you
>>73435205
Is there any slow and/or melancholic jazz that is actually good? Idle Moments hits that spot for me but a lot of bebop is very upbeat.
>>73435205
I just noticed that the /mu/core MEGA doesn't include much if any jazz.
Shouldn't there be a folder included for it alone? What would be in that folder anyways? There's got to be at least a good 10 or so solid albums to represent the genre
>Bop
>Cuban
>Big band
>Fusion
>Free
etc etc. Wish I had a good source for Bitches Brew.

bought a new Ikea Kallax to house my overflowing vinyl collection - listening to cool albums that I haven't listened in a while that I come across while moving albums to their new home.
Now listening to pic related - it's an interesting group with seven horns and a drummer, pretty traditional stuff if you know Lester Bowie from The Art Ensemble of Chigago

The /jazz/ general should have a pasta with MEGA links to recommended albums and links to the good review sites and stuff.
>>73437860
There are good jazz review sites?
>>73437978
Yeah, allaboutjazz has ok reviews and freejazzblog.org is good for free jazz. allmusic.com usually has pretty reliable reviews and ratings of classic jazz albums.

look into Doom Jazz
Bohren & Der Club of Gore and Mt. Fuji Doomjazz Co are both great
Been really diggin' this. I kind of slpet on it right after I got it cause I was really feeling Red Clay by Freddie. But damn. This album gets in to some fun grooves, while just being the perfect amount of out there.

listening to this rn. Real great. II BS and I X Love are fire. So moody.
>>73443671
>>73443650
Also this. Love Grant's playing and the focus on the guitar. Some of his solos are pretty goofy, but still fun. The gospel tunes are real fun. Herbie is nice as well.
this is really, really good
>>73438762
I just heard Orrin Evans on this album. It wasn't the best thing I've ever heard but I'd recommend it if you're into post bop type of stuff.
>>73435205
how come no ones mentioned that ass though
>>73435205

>>73444067
This album was pretty good. Evans' playing definitely raised the level of the whole album.
>>73444148
I hear it in 7. There's just a lot of 16th note syncopation. It's pretty cool btw.

Does anyone know of any good Jazz documentaries out there? I'm really interested in finding one that covers the history and evolution of Jazz music as a whole. Though also interested in good docs about certain eras or Jazz musicians.
>>73451793
Sadly the Ken Burns documentary is the closest thing to a comprehensive documentary. Its coverage of the very early roots of jazz is great, but there start to be some glaring omissions in everything it covers after Louis Armstrong.
