The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

>Breadhead vs Comet
I liked Red a good deal. While more harrowing, considerably more cynical, and I felt, in some cases, underlying sinister, than ITCOKC, I still found it to be a fascinating piece of prog rock. Definitely an adventurous record, and I can see why it is considered a highlight for the band's discography.

Damn. Phil Spector sure knows how to produce some solid pop tunes. I love Be My Baby by The Ronettes, probably is still one of my favorite songs, both the original version and the John Galm cover. I love how you love me is stellar as well. The Ronettes, Paris Sisters were only that definitely stood. The production is catchy, beautiful and lavish, some I expected. Phil really had it down to a formula for sure. My fear though with this record was that considering its 3 and half hour length, that same formula might keep completely draining, boring. And sadly, that did happen starting on the third disc. Which sucked. Hard. There will still some highlights on the third disc, but still very samey samey. And then it just felt like some of the mixing was smudgy so it was kinda sad to me. The Christmas CD wasn't that great either. Admittedly felt phoned in. And I wanted to really love this record. Maybe a relisten will make me even more fond of it, but as of now, in full, it's just draining.

TL;DR: Also, a very difficult match here. In fact, after listening to the Phil Spector, I had relisten to Red to reclarify the winner. And it was. Good job Breadhead, you may advance.

Also, 1 spot left for Tourney #2

===borzoi vs Comet===

>Cocteau Twins - Blue Bell Knoll
>Dream Pop

I never liked this group, after getting through only half of Victorialand. I feel like I'm listening to the instrument recordings that come on an electric Roland piano, and Elizabeth Fraser's voice isn't enough to save this.

I mean I know it's 1988 but geez i aint feelin the dreamy of this pop

This makes Julee Cruise actually sound enticing

5/10

>Jason Webley - Counterpoint
>Singer/Songwriter, Folk

A very nice variety of bleak/heartfelt songwriting. This isn't no Leonard Cohen album-- Webley's voice reaches to the depths of a Heavy Metal throughout, but it works very well in the squalid town the song takes place. Backed by 15 different instrumental players, this album stays fresh during the entire runtime.

"this was my concept record... Twelve songs in twelve keys, with recurring themes and each song written with a balancing counterpart."

Yup, save this album for a listenalong.

7/10

===theSound vs Ethy===

>Time Machines - S/T
>Drone

This is the first album to give me headaches while listening to it

I'm sure it's placebo but this album is actually pain

I get the idea of "temporal slips" when it comes to drone music, but I experience that a LOT with other drone-ish albums. So it really just gets a Meh and a half.

5/10

>Cluster - Cluster II
>Krautrock/Space Ambient

Hypnotic and active at the same time. Later in the album, I'm reminded of Boris - Flood. The 3rd track and B-Side is a lot stronger in combining the contrasting acoustic and digital moods, and it makes up for the awkward opening.

===jimmy jazz vs post-feelist===

>Graham Lambkin - Amateur Doubles
>Field Recording, Musique Concrete

The album recorded solely in a car. I've had this on my backlog for a while.

It's important to note that Lambkin didn't create the 70's progressive electronic pieces heard throughout this album himself.

This is a combination of a field recording and plunderphonics. You can actually hear the full albums for the first and second tracks here:

http://gonzairecords.com/album/pole

https://mellowrecords.bandcamp.com/album/philippe-grancher-3000-miles-away

Recorded in low-fidelity, the cheesiness (and shittiness) of these prog rock albums are obscured by throbbing ambient hums, the voice of Lambkin's son, and soft crackles. It would be nice to imagine that he was arranging the samples himself-- but I think he just threw a CD in and let them play, and recorded that. It does seem like a cheap way to make the album feel personal, experiment and all. Lambkin does have some interesting ideas about listening to music itself, and I'm sure there may be something greater within his body of work.

6/10

>Richard Dawson - Nothing Important
>Avant-Folk

I honestly didn't enjoy the first track or the closer. The real meat is the title track and The Vile Stuff. Narratively interesting with some real good lines, and a howling finish for both songs.

Like it or not, Dawson's lyricism has the same cryptic messages that Bon Iver likes to use. Dawson, however, cultivates his tracks in tragedy and refuses to simply approach them head-on; Bon Iver likes to embrace lavish, accessible melodies.

Dawson also really likes to delay the climaxes of verses, and fuck does it work.

===blapp vs lamb===

>Basic Channel - BCD-2
>Minimal/Dub Techno

Second compilation of the infamous duo, Basic Channel.

Already, Enforcement is 13 minute opus, grinding patterns together like no one's business. The shift in the synth's crunchiness in the first track alone, from grimy to choppy, makes for a satisfying intro. Other tracks makes use of contesting beats-- the hi hats and bass competing with off-kilter synth echoes. The noises that come out from these loops never feel misplaced, either. They supplement the illusion that the track is progressing much faster than it actually is.

It's all still minimal, indeed-- but there's the perfect amount of sound here to keep the whole mix from floating off. I'm more than happy to accept that this and BCD-1 were the fathers of their genre.

8/10

>Scott Johnson - John Somebody
>Post-Minimalism

My favorite part about Different Trains, composed by Steve Reich, is how it composes melodies alongside the natural pitches of the voice. This album does that too, but isn't nearly as minimal with its samples and instruments. There's all kinds of symphonic woodwinds and percussion, guitar and bass, playing over, around stuttering, laughter, and looping speech. Even then, the vocal samples being used aren't just overlaid like Reich's earliest work. They're laid on strict edges, harmonizing with each other, seemingly singing with the progressive melodies, forming the percussion, or serving as a strange placeholder between tracks.

This album sounds like a They Might Be Giants and Steve Reich collaboration. Having been released in 1986, this may have been the first album to compose music out of speech.

8/10

More revolutionary than you may think given the context though. I just like the five or so major distinct characters that defined the movement though and how they interact (Schulze, Dinger, Czukay, etc.). Like Harmonia is members of Cluster and Neu! and sounds like a crazy missing link between the two to me.

and honestly, just listen to Sinjin Hawke first. I'm not sure if the female voice he uses throughout the album is artificial, or a really nice manipulated sample. The brass and shorter tracks kinda remind me of Hudson Mohawke actually

Just another day at the office (anyone else watch the Chase here? Favourite chaser?).

>Com Truise - Galactic Melt. Listened to it for the album cover, holy heck is this good. All sorts of glitch-influenced synths and melodic time structures.
>Klaus Mittfoch. First time listening to Polish music, felt like a slice myself ;) anyhow the album was brilliant and the vocals had a ton of personality to them, I don't know what a kurdupelka is nor do I care but hell if I've seen energy like that before on an album.
>Kyuss - Wretch. Like this far more than Welcome to Sky Valley, at least as far as my first two listens go. The sweeping hooks on Son of a Bitch, Black Widow and Isolation penetrate far more than there other material and the pulsing bass helps to accentuate that.
>Kyuss - Blues For The Red Sun. Probably the weakest of the three so far, 50 Million Year Trip (Downside Up) was pretty good though the album as a whole leaved more to be desired, that being said it certainly seemed the "heavier" of the three.
>Siekiera - Nowa Alexandria. Couldn't understand a word of it though for coldwave it seemed to get pretty hot with some soaring guitar riffs and rattling high-hats pitted throughout.
>Wire - Pink Flag. As I expected it seems a little outdated though I enjoyed it nonetheless, not. Surgeon's Girl and Pink Flag provided a nice two-song combo and 12 X U seemed a suitable closer, see how my opinion changes when I've given it the full 20.

>The Flashbulb - Soundtrack To A Vacant Life (2008)
This is definitely The Flashbulb's most diverse release, with tons of different styles across the 31 tracks. Overall the mood is very cinematic and emotional; it really does sound like the soundtrack to a nonexistent movie. I just wish that I had a better idea of the significance of all the songs though. As of now it's just a series of nice, vaguely connected tidbits to me. It makes me really want to track down the Producer's Editions, because I'm sure that Benn's commentary will greatly increase my enjoyment. 3.5-
(aside: the current top review on RYM for this album sucks ass, basically says "this is really good but I wanted IDM, 3/5")

>The Flashbulb - That Missing Week (2007)
A collection of B-sides and remixes that was kind of like a promo for Soundtracks To A Vacant Life. It's all over the place as expected, but even moreso due to the ecletic nature of the album this is promoting. I gotta give props to Our Furry Past Life for being one of the most happy tracks under the Flashbulb name though. 3-

>Belong - October Language
8
Amongst the fullest dreamy+noisy ambient I've ever heard, with lots to hear upon relistens. I would recommend this to others before Jefre Cantu, as an accessible introduction to noise.

>Fuuka ASMR - NXCXTC
8
Really catchy and catchy sample chopping and splicing, whipping by at a breakneck pace in the first two tracks. The 3rd lets up a bit, but the 4th was disappointing that it didn't really hit a Rustie-esque high.

I'm assuming the voices are from animations? They fit the album art really well.

>Toshimaru Nakamura - No Input Mixing Board
8
Not what I expected for Onkyo. Some of this isn't even abrasive, but I like it. It's mind-numbing loops, that somehow manage a variety of sounds like a minimal Returnal-- all with no input.

Maybe give this album a shot if you don't like Good Morning, Good Night. There's still a REALLY high frequency part about 20 minutes in, so be warned.

>Grouper - AIA Dream Loss
7
I think this might actually be better than Alien Observer, but I'll have to relisten to the the latter.

>Nicolas Jaar - Nymphs III
7
Looks like i gotta listen to EPs 1 and 2 now

>Waclaw Zimpel - Lines
7
Overdubbing instruments = sounds like there's more than one guy playing = Hey That's Neat

Not very ground-breaking, but there wasn't one moment I didn't like. Title track has a perfect usage of the sax, too.

>D/P/I - Composer
7
Rhythmic noise. Progressive Electronic without the melodies, making up for it with catchy beats alone.

>Piotr Kudek - Edena
7
Crumbs fall from overhead, in a forgotten apartment room of the misty, cold town. A glow emits from underneath white blankets, covering artifacts and debris alike. On a small, CRT television, a 16 bit child explores a castle, the woods, a mountain shrine...

Prog electronic and dungeon synth melodies, with modern touches of voice layering.

>Fourth World Magazine - Pinhead in Fantasia
7

A notably strange crossroad between a selection of experimental electronic genres. Dungeon Synth leads, collage background samples, Nu Age aesthetic, Tribal-like percussion; it's very evocative. Some entity is trying to communicate through this, but they're purely abstract. Rodriguez, I think you'd like this.

Bonus: math video tutorials sound really nice with this

>ayashi{!} - ZENITH
6
Was surprised by some of the verses on here. Bit more substantial instrumental hiphop than usual, bit more sad than usual.

>Loops of Your Heart - And Never Ending Nights
6

The Field does a side project with mostly Ambient + Prog Electronic, following 3 albums under The Field. A very slow and winding album, hearkens back to a lot of older producers.

>Demen - Nektyr
6
Above-average ambient, dark pop. Give this a try if you like Blade Runner, but don't expect a city atmosphere. The singer's from Sweden, and her voice has a nice range-- but the producer seems to like hitting snares and giving them echo a bit too much.

>No Devotion - Permanence
5

Lead vocalist of Thursday joins pop rock band Lostprophets, and knowingly create shoegaze/punk corny music, sounding like The Cure/M83. It's a BIG improvement for lostprophets. Not just musically, but for the band itself, ever since Ian Watkins, their lead singer, was charged for sexual offenses.

This album is a lot like The Temper Trap - Conditions. Permanent Sunlight is the "Sweet Disposition" of the record, a gorgeous nocturnal anthem, and extremely catchy. But the rest of the album is just meh.

I like it when the album art is neat but the album's Unknown Mortal Orchestra without the hooks, and made of floaty soul and R&B. I'm probably underrating this, but this felt really dead.

>KITTY - Frostbite
3
Perfectly serviceable dance pop. Should have gotten her husband, Sam "Will Toledo is a Bean Burrito" Ray, to produce this instead.

Why are the reviews on rym for this so fuckhuge. Is this a """"girl"""" thing so i wont get these lyrics

Zane, esplain urself

>Marian Hill - Act One
>R&B, Art Pop, Trap
3

N o r m i e - c o r e

I do appreciate the plain approach it takes to R&B-- these tracks aren't afraid to make use of silence in place of the standard, boring backgrounds for recently huge artists.
Hill's voice isn't awful, but god the trap drops are so... blegh. Lyrics don't get any better, either. Pretty obvious that this album was an attempt to get big.

The Ruins of Beverast - Exuvia (2017)
>death doom metal

A cool, innovative modern metal album that often gets caught up in its own ambition and bombast. The black metal sound of the band's prior works is completely shedded save for a few blast beat sections, replaced with an expansive, ambient-influenced doomy sound. It works, in short bursts. The longer tracks tend to very much overstay their welcome, even if they may have good ideas to begin with. Shorter formats really lets this sound shine, but this is still one of the better metal albums of the decade I've heard.

Mary Lou Williams - Black Christ of the Andes (1964)
>jazz

Awkward, stiffly arranged choral pieces drag down the jaunty beauty of Williams' piano pieces. The piano pieces truly are great, they've got a similar genial simplicity to stuff by Vince Guaraldi, but they differ due to the inclusion of Williams' passionate, gospel-infused vocals. This style is where Williams' strengths lie, and the choral pieces do nothing but bring this album down.

Yowie - Synchromysticism (2017)
>math rock, brutal prog, avant-prog

I'll never say that Cryptooology is a perfect album, but it's unique approach to math rock composition and it's absolutely brutal, balls to the wall approach is really refreshing and impressive. Thirteen years has definitely taken some vigor out of the band, because this is a pretty stale, repetitive affair. Every performance here is pitch-perfect, especially the hypnotic drums, but the compositions are too straightforward and the production is far too thin. The last track is a massive krautrock groove-fest that almost makes up for the prior 25 or so minutes of flat, uninspired boredom, but it misses that mark. For fans of Shellac or other related bands, but fans of Cryptooology will probably be disappointed by the relatively straightforward nature of this.

Collin Walcott - Cloud Dance (1976)
>ECM style jazz

About as floaty and new agey as your average ECM release with this kind of cover, but this kind of style is done well here. Walcott's sitar work is a really great touch, but Holland's bass work is honestly the star of the show here. His style is incredibly percussive and it plays off of Walcott's reverberating sitar perfectly. A lot of it honestly sounds like instrumental breaks from a prog rock track, so it's a distinctly rock-based take on jazz, but a whole lot better than that sounds.

>Good friend rodriguez vs Mark And

When I first Person Pitch years back, I had no comprehension of what I was listening to. So I decided to relisten to it again after all these years, and I've definitely felt better about what I'm listening to for sure. The mixing and sounds are very shimmery, sheek. Maybe it's because I just listen to that Phil Spector comp, but this definitely reminds me of that wall of sound production, with more reverb and delay. The way the record is layered most definitely reminds me of techno (makes sense especially, knowing that one of the influences listed was Basic Channel). Like techno meets psychedelic drum circle. Something about it feels at points a bit too loose, loosely looped, and sometimes the production comes out more disorienting than it does charming. A second listen helped to clear those issues and made me more familiar about the territory I had placed myself in, making the album catchier and some fuzzy textures more noticeable to my ears. I enjoyed it.

I loved XTC's Skylarking, how catchy and blissful it was. To an extent, English Settlement still has a bit of that jangly and jittery sound that Skylarking had, but it sounds a bit more "anxious", especially with the political lyrics Patridge goes into with this album. That isn't to say there aren't any good tracks on this album. No Thugs is catchy, so too is Yacht Dance, and All Of A Sudden. Most, if not all, of these tracks in what or another have a very catchy hook or line. One track I'd even say has a ska vibe to it and the band makes it work. I guess I was just hopeful of more in this case. At worst, the tracks on this album are just middle of the road. But I had fun with it nonetheless.

TL;DR: Ah, damn. Both of these are fun, both of these I could see as albums to chill in a hot tub on a summer day too. But the winner goes to Rodriguez. Congrats, you may advance. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm getting in a hot tub.

>blapp vs Breadheadツ

Oh boy.

So I love '77 Live. And it appears that the entire album, say for one track, is still from the same album, except the order is mixed up. I liked 77 live in terms of cohesion but this is still great. The thick-ribbed and skeletal drums and bassline are fantastic, and insane dissonance and distortion that shrouds and compliments the foundation in a stellar way. In my honest opinion, the bad cohesion is kind of what kills it for me, as well as the recording of People Choose, which isn't that good of a track (more hazy distortion with little backbone to offer).

Pink Floyd's Piper was a solid effort, but, in many ways, felt more like a contemporary effort, something psychedelic like that of the Brit rock of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's, or even The Zombies' Odyssey and Oracle, but with more hints of LSD (poor analogy? My apologies.). I like it in many ways, its zany and carnival-like sound is very nice and welcoming.

TL;DR: Painful choice, and my heart is obviously in a stirr (sorry, gotta act dramatic), both are good, as always. But it goes to Blapp. Good job, you can advance.

>The Sundays - Reading, Writing and Arithmetic
>Jangle pop
4
What a great pop album, first of all I'm not big into jangle pop so I'm sorry the only thing I have to compare it to is the Smiths, but I mean the guitar work here really reminds me of what you can find in The Queen is Dead, also it has those dreamy elements that paired with a (great) female voice kind of evokes the work of Cocteau Twins, specially Heaven or Las Vegas. 10 Songs, less than 40 minutes, great example that simple things can be beautiful too.
Favorite tracks: Here's Where the Story Ends, Hideous Towns, My Finest Hour.

>Three 6 Mafia - Chpt. 2: "World Domination"
>Memphis rap
2.5-
This is dope. Like it takes a pair of minutes to get started with Will Blast, which is actually short and leaves you wanting for more, but most of the following tracks are complete bangers (and some laid back ones too). The now dated effects serve as a plus to its aesthetics while the lyrics work to make their point pretty clear, you don't fuck with the mafia. "Tajante como la esencia del samurai". It just goes for too long that gets repetitive, lost some interest at the last of second half until Land of the Lost. Anyway, you have to play this loud.
Favorite tracks: Motivated, Hit a Muthafucka, Late Nite Tip.

Supertramp is basically mid-Floyd innit, i don't like it
Fugazi's better the closer they are to straight hardcore, really hit-miss stuff
Quadrophenia's really good, consistently so, especially the last side

Born of immigrants, his entire artistic upbringing happened in New York, he collaborated mainly with US artists, put his stuff out mainly on US labels, he sounds like hes from the US, his sound is pretty much as east coast as it gets. He is not a representant of british hip hop.
>>

He really doesn't. His accent is pretty thick and he's made a decent amount of references to London.

All this older material might be rougher than I expected.

>The Flashbulb - FLY! (2001)
I Think In A Minute Or So I'll Explode is the highlight here. The rest isn't very good. 2/5

>M3 (2000)
This really doesn't hold up anymore. A lot of the tracks are somewhat sparse and make the percussion do most of the work, but the breaks/glitch/distorted bass drums aren't appealing enough to make up for it. Some of the tracks are alright though, especially the longer ones. Brown #12 is solid, and I like the melody on Ambered Shores. 2/5

>FlexE - Programmable Love Songs: Volume 1 (2004)
I gotta admit, I'm completely out of my element here. I don't listen to acid at all, but this doesn't even seem like a "normal" acid album in the first place. Sure, there's a lot of 303, but the tracks themselves are all over the place. A lot of it falls under acid house/techno, but even then they range from soft downtempo to some seriously funky stuff. There's a few straight-up breakcore tracks, some electro, and even a bizarre chiptune medley too. It's more cohesive than you'd expect because the acid brings most of it together, but it still just leaves me baffled. 2.5-

>Sunshine Has Blown
this seems to be the eai album that everyone raves about the most, and i guess i can see the reason. it takes a while to really get into the swing of it, but there were some very lush, relaxing parts buried in here. the last track kind of reminded me of the caretaker with the old-timey samples (that is, if the caretaker did eai). it leans really positive for me, but im gonna relisten soon to solidify my thoughts.
3.5-
>Naang Naang - Le Ywei Sin Tei Mya
besides "B"GT, this has gotta be my favorite on the chart so far. super dense, lofi, psychedelic pop tunes. its almost too lofi, with all its crackles and ear-piercing quality. but for me, that adds to the charm and feel of the tape, and it makes it a way more fun, psychedelic experience. the vocals are killer, and everything about it is just summery and fun. i absolutely loved it.
4.0+
>Laddio Bolocko - Strange Warmings of...
Blew my freakin socks off. This album is PUMMELING and tons of fun. Sure, they play up the noise and dissonance a lot, but you can't deny how damn groovy this album is. I thought the play up of the noise added to the album, and made it more mind-blowingly enjoyable. For yr noisy, krautrock-flavored needs, see this album.
4.0-
>The Books - The Way Out
pretty alright, but not nearly as charming as Lemon of Pink. it has a little bit more energy and upbeatness to it, but its not nearly as soothing, or atmospheric. nevertheless, still a good listen.

>Julius Eastman - Unjust Malaise
What an incredibly daring compilation, and I'll be damned if Eastman doesn't know how to make a statement through his music. This is a super tiring listen, clocking in at 3 hours of dissonant classical pieces. But each piece brings something new to the table. Stay On It narrates the ensemble as they attempt to keep on a melody, but continuously fumble back into dissonance, ending with the slow, dreary harmony to the melody. The Nigger Trilogy offers some of the most intense and hypnotic piano playing ever recorded, probably. Hold Presence of Joan d'Arc is totally electrifying. It's sounds like war, raging on. The low points are the 2nd and 3rd tracks, but they're still pretty captivating in their own way. Overall, its deep, its long, its tiring, but its well worth the listen.
3.5+

im dropping goodbye babylon bc i realize that i dont have the motivation to find time to listen to a 6 hour box set atm, so im just gonna cool it and finish up with what i have. ill get to that someday.

Relax, I'll get to music in a minute.

>The Stranger Beside Me: Ted Bundy The Shocking Inside Story
This is an inherently interesting premise--Ann Rule was writing a true crime story about a killing spree by a man who turned out to be her friend, Ted Bundy. That being said, the major problem here is that there's still not a ton of insight here that that allows us. Ideally, a book about one of history's most infamous serial killers should provide some analysis--both about psychological motives and general cultural relevance of the case. I'm afraid she just wasn't up to the task a lot of the time and it reads more like a mass marketed crime novel, which one may or may not have moral objections to.
6.5/10

>Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and Its Legacy
This won the Pulitzer for history this year. There's thorough, straight-forward, no-frills reporting on the terrible conditions that led to the prison uprising and its subsequent racially-fueled massacre. The thing is, this ends about halfway through and the rest is an extremely dry recounting of the civil rights court cases in its aftermath.
6.5/10

>Hex
The dread reading this book brought me. I was intrigued by a spooky It Follows-esque premise, but this variety of recent trendy not-just-for-genre-fans genre fiction (The Martian, etc.) invariable reads like a Reddit thread. Seriously embarrassing. Is it too serious or not serious enough?
2/10
>>
>>73458475

>>
>>73458518
>Portnoy's Complaint
Roth is in a class of maybe three other post-WWII American authors that just understand human nature and social dynamics better than anyone. This is an extremely funny look the idolization and fetishization young men feel towards women in their lives. Understanding to the point where it almost doesn't feel perverted.
8/10

>Against Everything: Essays
The title is a bit of a misnomer. It's a collection of critical theory essays, to be sure, but I would say the stances aren't often contrarian in the way works by Slavoj Zizek, for example, might be. He covers a variety of pop culture topics from reality television to Radiohead to YouTube in the way David Foster Wallace might have done in his essays (albeit all a bit less challenging of the already-established popular critical opinion on these talking points that are quite trite for 2016), with the exception of an excellent multi-part essay on experience and the need for a balance between aesthetic and anaesthetic that pervades American culture...i.e. Wallace's main talking point regarding entertainment, explored more thoroughly here. This particular essay and one that takes a fresh look the police's role in America is worth the price of admission.
7/10

>First as Tragedy, Then as Farce
Say what you will about Zizek, but I'm always amazed at the connections he draws and the way he generally thinks. Thing is, his reasoning is all over the damn map to the point where you can't tell whether or not you agree with his theses.
7/10

>ju sei & Utah Kawasaki - ゆはゆたのゆ (U as in Utah)
>art pop
3+
Was expecting something sweet from this and it has it. The part 1 of the first track, in its almost 20 minutes is full of pleasant sounds all over the place that create some sort of a collage; childish vocals, mixture between soft and noisy electronic sounds, some acoustic guitar in there too, then EAI again.
In the rest parts it starts to stall, it's the same idea but in smaller doses, most of it just goes by and it's not enough to compensate the time it takes to get to parts 7 and 8 which are also to stand out.
Second disc is way better, divided in 3 parts there's a lot more insteresting stuff going on here and less weaker moments that I can see myself going back to it more often, it follows the same idea but also an ambient atmosphere is now present, it would've been nice to let it go longer but it gets surpassed by the art pop stuff.
Favorite moment: Part 7 of first disc, and all of second disc.

>Hapshash and the Coloured Coat - Featuring the Human Host and the Heavy Metal Kids
>psychedelic rock
2.5-
The ideas here are great, was actually surprised to get more free folk out of this than some kind of Pink Floyd-esque psych rock, mainly because of the year we are talking about.
The musicians are nothing to be impressed about, it justs feels like an average jam session and nothing else.
Favorite tracks: Aoum, Empires of the Sun.

>Cold Cave - Cheerish the Light Years
>synthpop
3+
If I'm not mistaken Cold Cave is one of the biggest acts in what it was (is?) the latest synthpop revival, I still remember when I found out about this project circa 2010 but it just didn't caught my attention, I liked the previous work of Wesley Eisold in Give Up the Ghost and honestly I wasn't a fan of the idea of him taking his music to this directon.
After the first song all I could think was "I knew it, this doesn't sound good", but I'm glad the rest of the album proved me wrong, the vocals do get better and the instrumentation is always on point, it's dark but it's also danceable. Can see why this project got somewhat big, although it's nothing not seen before.
Favorite tracks: Pacing Around the Church, Underworld USA, Villians of the Moon.

Any idea of which I could do next? I'll have some time later today, if not I'll leave it for tomorrow :=)

Sadness Will Prevail.jpg
53KB, 500x500px
Today is the Day - Sadness Will Prevail (2002)
>Noisecore, Noise, Post-hardcore
This is an evil album. Far from the powerful, virtuostic, and highly emotional playing on "Willpower," "Sadness Will Prevail" opts for savage, primitive simplicity; it's just lots of furious, jagged riffs, and outright contempt for the listener--'nothing helps a bad mood like spreading it around.'

Listening to the whole two-plus-hour behemoth really makes me feel kind of sick and angry, so I guess it's an effective album if anything. Like, there's that pressure behind the eyes, and your teeth grit a bit. The lyrics (when intelligible) deal with at least isolation, depression, drug abuse, murder, cannibalism, and suicide. The mix purposefully plays down the low-end lending the album to a visceral shrieking sound not unlike that of bass-less Arab on Radar. It's 144 minutes of violent noisecore and more subdued but no less unsettling noise experiments, and the tracks all flow into one another like one unending nightmare.

Unfortunately, its length works against it. There's simply too much filler here. While there are some amazing tracks here, and the entire album is a uniquely punishing experience, most of these songs just aren't interesting. The ones I do enjoy the most are really just those closest to the sound of "Willpower." Though it's hardly even the same band that made "Willpower," which is incredibly disappointing.

im gonna say a thing or two about each album because i dont want to get a hundred replies asking "wah why didnt you like my album"

it's idm/glitchy beats for indie rockers. works alright most of the time

doesn't deserve half of the hate it gets. it's just insufferable to sit through because of the high frequencies. if they were toned down a bit i'd probably have a blast with it.

what kind of meme ass black metal is this lmao

akufen is a one note guy but he can sure play that one note quite alright

sounds at times like if the residents had the blues, im okay with waits but i don't like this style he's doing here too much

everything i hoped vision creation newsun would've been, luckily they did it here. some bits almost made me Super Cumming but then he had to do some weird singing (not talking about shine that one was good) or start messing around and high pitch the track for a second (the opener would've been so perfect without that)

i haven't heard jangle's yet because i wanna keep him and s in suspense to see who will grab that final spot on the left side...

confield is confield, aint no anti or lp5 or oversteps but its good.

>Django Reinhardt - Djangology
God I really wish I lived in the era where music like this would be played publicly.. on the radio, in bars, etc. It's just very lovely, especially as background music (as a sit down listening experience it can get a little tedious). This may end up becoming a 4/5, I'm not sure.
3.5/5
>Godspeed You! Black Emperor - 05.14.03: Nantes, France
A little long, but pretty good. Honestly I was hoping I'd like it more.. it doesn't necessarily stand out in GY!BE's discography to me. For sure some really powerful moments in this set though.
3.5/5
>Heavenly - Operation Heavenly
Pretty comfy with a nice twee aesthetic, but none of the tracks really stand out, and it honestly just felt decent.

Ukrainian Guy - Stringy Strangy Suck My Wangy
Hmm idk about this, that droning wind thing is pretty neat but it does get grating after some time. The string sections towards the end were nice.
3.5

Phil Spector - Back To Mono
The majority of tracks on this album, I would say are good. Phil Spector is an excellent producer. However, many of the tracks sound the same, use of all these instruments, reverb, and harmonies to create the wall of sound results in little variety throughout. I wouldn't recommend listening to it in one sitting, but I would recommend it.
3.5+

V/A - Mikgazer vol. 1
A pretty decent collection of shoegaze with a neat quirk. Most of it is in a style akin to mbv that’s fairly noisy. Not that much variety but it was well put together and an interesting experiment.
3

Tuxedomoon - Desire
That’s some good shit. Jazz organ, sax, drum machines, nice bass. It’s still got that disconcerting post punk feeling and lyrics in low spirits.

Can - Future Days

Mingus is overrated as fuck. Dude's never had god tier musicians who can bring variety in improvisation so they suck at the
jazz part of his third stream style meanwhile the arrangements themselves are amateur baby tier stuff that even an amateur generic film/game composer does a better job of doing.

Annie Gosfield - Flying Sparks and Heavy Machinery (2001)
>musique concrète, electroacoustic

Like Gosfield's first album, she's definitely more about style over substance here. Rather, concept over substance. The industrial, factory-based concept here is interesting, and Gosfield can certainly tap into the sounds and bustling atmosphere of a factory, but there's really nothing here beyond the flash and vigor on the album's surface. Much of the music here can be reduced down to banging and scraping, which makes for some damn cool sounds, but it's really shallow from a compositional perspective. The weird poppiness here is also a bit of a turn-off, but that's mostly kept to a minimum. An improvement over her debut, that's for sure, but I can't help but shake the feeling that's just because the concept here is more interesting.

2.5

The Charlie Mingus Jazz Workshop - Pithecanthropus Erectus (1956)
>post-bop

The tone poem title track is one of Mingus' greatest pieces, and considering that it's the first track off his first major album, that's pretty impressive. The track twists and turns without ever losing the voice that the instruments have, solidified by the perfect instrumental performances here. Mingus' greatest gift is in arranging (if I may disagree with >>73464797), and this piece is probably his greatest accomplishment on that front. The remaining three tracks are solid pieces of post-bop that, while never achieving the glory of the title track, round out the album is satisfying way by taking on a less sophisticated, more bouncy tone. Can this man do no wrong?

La Monte Young - 31 VII 69 10:26 - 10:49 PM / 23 VIII 64 2:50:45-3:11 AM [aka The Black Record] (1969)
>drone, minimalism

Young, arguably the very first drone artist, does not fuck around when it comes to his drone. The first piece here is a slow-burning track led by throat singing-esque vocals, while the second is a very light rumbling stretched out to twenty minutes. "10:26 - 10:49 PM" is pretty beautiful, incredibly primitive but still quite gorgeous and well put-together. "2:50:45-3:11 AM" has too little going on to really appeal to me that much, it's texturally rich but it's drone taken to the most extreme levels possible. More interesting as a piece of musical history than anything else, but quite pretty in its own way.

Ibibio Sound Machine - Uyai (2017)
>afro-funk, afrobeat, electro

A modernized take on afrobeat and afro-funk that lacks the soul and passion that makes those genres so great. When these genres have a more pronounced influence on the music here, it's great, like on the closer "Trance Dance" (one of my new favorite songs of the year), but the standard EDM tracks range from boring to terribly cheap sounding. It's always somewhat danceable, but so much of this sounds really cheap and kind of lazy. There's a lot that can be done with this sound but the opportunity is a bit missed here.

Porter Ricks : Techno Animal - Symbiotics (1999)
>illbient, minimal techno

Both Porter Ricks and Techno Animal are impressively on point here. Some of the more ambient Porter Ricks tracks, like the 12-minute "Ionic" go on for too long, but their best tracks, like "Polytoxic 2", are incredible pieces of techno. Techno Animal is pretty much all golden here. They pretty much do everything here better on The Brotherhood of the Bomb, but the beats are still rock solid and pummeling, and they contrast with Porter Ricks slower, more deliberate pieces perfectly. Damn good split for anybody that likes either of these artists.
