LET. IT. DIE!!!!!!!!

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

curious, is anyone here /nathanforyou/?

been really digging the show lately after actually watching full eps and holy shit Smokers Allowed and The Hero are easily some of the greatest comedy episodes I've ever seen on television

while I don't think they're as hilarious as some other Nathan moments, they certainly go beyond just being funny and hit some sort of emotional level through Nathan's awkward humour

maybe I'm overanalyzing but either way Nathan Fielder is a comedic genius

yeah, it really makes Nathan's character go from being just the really awkward guy in season 1 to a man that really needs some help

when I first started watching clips of the show on Youtube like a year or two ago I wouldn't have expected it to be as damn amazing is this desu

really one of the most inventive shows of the 10s and dare I say it, of all time

>AL-90 - Code-915913
Decent danceable lo-fi house music that draws from organic sounds as opposed to cold machine loops. The first five tracks are quite nice, but then the album seems to run out of ideas, drawing from the same vocal samples and sonic palette. This is a perfect example of an album that does not justify its length as it essentially serves up the same song over and over again. I had to double check multiple times that I hadn't accidentally turned on the repeat track button. Despite not being all that interesting and kind of forgettable in the end, save for a few tracks, it is comfy, and I think that has some value.

>Oxbow - New Oxbow
The backing instrumentation has its bombastic moments, but the vocalist is the key player here. Without his fantastic and strange performances this album wouldn't be nearly as interesting or fun. Worth a listen.

>Luciano Cilio - Dialoghi del presente
The first track is just stunning. That moment when the vocals kick in and create a harmonizing, droning effect is something to behold, especially for its time. Unfortunately, I don't think the rest of the album quite reaches that height. It kind of washes over me and blends together. The percussion is moody and subtle, and I appreciate the atmosphere created but nothing wowed me. Will continue to listen a bit more. I assume this is an album you have to be in the mood for, so I'll save it for a late night.

Russian dude - Russian Baby Album

Somewhat similar to the other two albums by Letov, it is a bit more psychedelic and dynamic.

3.5

Russian Dude and Friends - Punk Album with pipes on it

Pretty similar to the other one, I enjoyed it about the same amount.

3.5

Public Image ltd - Metal Box

Some songs I enjoyed, others I was lukewarm to and some I did not at all. But they were all interesting at the very least and I wouldn’t say there are 2 same songs on the album.

>good friend rodriguez vs trip up
I was most definitely excited to see how this would turn out. A fight between two Japanese psychedelic rock bands who are held to high esteem? Interesting fight.

First off, the drumming on Boredoms is fantastic and was the number one attribute that I could hold into high regard. The rest of the instrumentation was very lush, livid, energetic. I like the use of flanger-like effects, and the little pierces of texture attempting to seep through the mix are a nice touch. My only fluke is how the drums feel like they carry a lot of the music together, so while the instrumentation is pretty, it doesn't stand out as much as the drumming, and feels like it could fall apart easily if no drumming was in the recording. Definitely was a nice listen experience.

In comparison, Fishman's 1998 live album was on the other end of the energy spectrum. The instrumentals were very lush and pretty, nice in both realms of dub and dream pop, but I think the problem for me lies in the vocal performance. It's ok for vocals, but at some points it can feel cartoonish, flat, which especially doesn't feel like it should fit with the instrumentals. Another point of skepticism for me is why this is so highly praised in the context of dub and dream pop scenes. I like the album but I feel need to relisten to it more to get used to the vocals and sound overall. Stinks too because I thought I would love this one on first listen. But my god, Long Season was so lovely.

This was tough, but overall, our good friend rodriguez wins this round. You may advance forward my dude.

This is actually pretty fun.

>The Flashbulb - Arboreal (2010)
It's a shame that Undiscovered Colors is the one song that everyone remembers, because there's so much more that this album has to offer. The mood is cohesive but not restricting, and all the songs are really dynamic. There's a lot less of the glitchy IDM/breakcore sound from his older albums, but in its stead there's more atmospheric downtempo stuff which is great. The only complaint I have is that there's a long stretch of more subdued tracks in the second half; it could've used some more variety. 4+

>The Flashbulb - Girls Suck But You Don't (2003)
This is just a random collection of tracks cobbled together for a small Japanese label, and it shows. The songs are all over the place, and most of them are pretty short so they end before anything interesting can happen. There's a bit of a playful vibe going on, but I think that's just a consequence of the songs originally not being intended for release. It's still The Flashbulb though, so it's a decent listen even if he's just messing around. 2.5-

>Benn Jordan - Sleep (1996)
I dunno what the deal is with this. Why are some of these tracks so uncharacteristically bubbly? Why does a song called Nightmares sound like cheery new age with a beat? Why is the most boring song the longest one? Rendered Shores always reminds me of the godly slowed down version that gets posted on /f/ though, so I can't dislike this. 2.5+

Okay this format usually sucks so i wanted to come up with a way to spice things up, couldn't think of anything novel so i just copied an idea from another (dead) general:
Blindfold listenalong.
Whole album merged into one file, no tags.
Because maybe by eliminating some factors we get fairer ratings or at least more participants.
On the other hand maybe less since we lose the possibility of streaming, and maybe once the first reviews are in it wouldn't have made a difference anyways.
We'll see how it plays out i guess.
This isn't supposed to be a guessing game by the way, please, even if you can correctly guess the album/artist, just shut up or play along.
I'm gonna reveal what it is once updates stop coming in.

excellent stuff, way more enthralling and captivating than 1st. its rawer, noisier, denser, and just all around better. plus that last track kicks more ass than most noise albums (it definitely deserves the #1 spot for the rym noise page)
4.0-
>Art Blakey - A Night In Tunisia
good hard bop. blakey is an excellent drummer (obviously) and he really shines on this album, id say his drumming carries most of the album, but the sax is good too.
3.0+
>Brian Wilson
really loved this. it felt like a great medium between smile and pet sounds. just 40 minutes of dense, luscious walls of sound that Wilson knows best
3.5+
>Amnesia Scanner - Angels Rig Hook
lol im sorry but this just wasnt good. i really didnt enjoy it. i think it was the whole narration to it, it really put me off and made the experience kind of pretentious and unenjoyable for me. although some parts did make me laugh out loud (www.yourdicklooksgreatinthoseheels.com), and there were some musical moments that were pretty nice.
2.5-

>s vs Mark And
Brainbombs was just bad. Like the riffs and the instruments were nice in terms of punk, but they got easily irrating after the 3 minute mark, and the vocalist is god awful. He sounds like an edgy Swedish teenager who just learned some English slang and decided to be edgy while recording lyrics that don't fit the instrumental tempo in any way through a shitty mic, whispering cuz he doesn't have the balls to curse around his parents. Fuck I'm agitated.

Ground Zero was so much easier to get into after that. I get a John Zorn vibe from it, so that's a good start. The integration of record samples with the live instrumentation was extraordinarily seamless. It was almost like a zany, glitchy, esoteric soundtrack for an obscure action film with a protagonist that is mentally falling apart. So it was definitely more entertaining. My only fluke was that some of the samples were overly repetitive, and at some points, some of the pieces of the album felt long-winded.

Winner was not a hard choice. Good job Mark And, you can advance.

4/5
>Demilich - 20th Adversary of Emptiness
Liked this a lot, wish I would've liked it a little more than I did, however. I wasn't a huge fan of the vocals, and it could have been faster and less sludgy, but that's just my personal taste. This was still monolithic though, the kind of shit that you'd expect to be the soundtrack of some horribly evil monster eating the universe.

These guys are just really good. I loved the noise-pop elements, sort of reminded me of AnCo at times.

>Accel vs blapp
Kiran Leonard's Grapefruit was a very interesting listen. The music had moments of interesting post-rock, alt-rock work, math rock as well, some of the mannerisms in the vocals reminded me of Jeff Buckley, some people in RYM mentioned Radiohead, which wasn't as noticeable, but still telling. It was colorful to say the least. The problem in this case might lie in the vocal performances, as well as the sporadic passages of instrumentation, but those inconsistencies are far and few in between. I liked it.

Disco Inferno's D. I. Go Pop was also very good. The mix of post-punk, sound collage and samplers I found to be very engaging, hypnotic, chaotic at some points, yet almost like a wave of cloth that engulfs the listener. My problem is, again, the vocals. The lyrics are incomprehensible and poorly muddled in the mixing to where if the lyrics were to be hypnotic or cryptic, it would be of difficult to even interpret what is being said at all. The lethargic delivery of the vocals actually helps instrumentals, but the accent might be a little jagged. I liked this one too.

TL;DR: Damn. This was a tough match, but I think the winner for this round goes to blapp. Congrats, you may advance.

Also 3 spots left on Tourney #2, and a spot left available for my 2017 Tourney.

Hey /daily/ !
I feel alot better already, sorry for all the whining the last three days, I shouldn't talk about that stuff on here. But it got better and I now can continue exploring the chart.

I also listened to the last borzoi-rec, Substrata by Biosphere, and I really liked this, this actually helped me to calm down a bit, haha, usually use Boards of Canada for that, but Substrata delivers the perfect ambient atmosphere with a darker mood, so that was even helpful, thank you borzoi!

From the chart I listened to Spiderland by Slint and this was very interesting, I loved the dynamics that went on in most songs. "For Dinner" was a bit of a letdown on its own, but I think it serves as a good build-up for the great final, "Good Morning Captain". Wow, this was incredible emotional, I actually cried on the last "I MISS YOU". Definitely a new favourite track ^^

As you can see I dropped the idea to do one per trip first, because I got recced mostly stuff from people I already heard albums from.
I once more lost track on all these recommendations, so you just gotta tell me again what to listen to next, haha.

I'm pretty new to more experimental music, especially the bad recording quality on alot of these albums bothers me, but people are already trying to get me into noisy stuff ^^

As for Mingus, I have a hard time understanding the big appeal of jazz, I'm definitely missing something, and someone already gave me a thing to look for, so hopefully I can appreciate it more next time.

I forgot to mention that a lot of the albums in the middle section are relistens, but my memory sucks so it's okay.

>The Flashbulb - Kirlian Selections (2005)
I've always been really averse to albums with lots of short tracks, but this was a lot less scattered and chaotic than I expected. Sure, it has its fair share of glitchy breakcore, but the craziest songs are mostly frontloaded. The rest is a lot more downtempo and cinematic. I still feel like this album would've been better if it was shorter, but I ended up enjoying every single track which was a pleasant surprise. 4/5

>CHR15TPUNCH3R (2000)
The name is probably more interesting than the actual music to be honest. The first couple tracks are nice ambient glitch stuff, but the rest is kind of cheesy and not my taste. 2+/5

>The Flashbulb - Compositions For Piano (2015)
I wasn't sure what to expect from this, but it was quite nice. Most of the pieces are jazzy and have a subdued playfulness to them, which is pretty different from the piano pieces in his earlier albums. A lot of the songs don't really stand out, but there's a few more overtly interesting pieces interspersed throughout the album (the two for prepared piano at the end in particular). I'm probably overrating this because I'm ignorant about classical and jazz, but it's a very pleasant listen, which is enough for me. 3.5/5
>>
>>73421140
I tried Kirlian Sections, but it was just ok.

What Flashbulb album would you reccomend me giving a go?
>>
>>73421539
I haven't listened to it yet, but Reunion is apparently completely analog and very jazzy, kind of like a foil to Kirlian Selections. Might be worth a try.

had to listen to an appropriate album

Kanye West - Graduation (2007)
>pop rap, hip hop

Save for the full-on pop experiment known as 808s & Heartbreak, this is certainly West's weakest album. I've got issues with The College Dropout and Late Registration, but one thing I love about both of them is that they have soul, both in the beats and in West's delivery. This album doesn't have soul when it comes to either of those. West's synthpop production stylings here are awkward, and his raps are lazy. It's got a cool sound to it courtesy of the massive house influences, which are sadly used a bit too sparingly and even completely forgone on truly awful tracks like the "Sing Swan Song"-sampling "Drunk and Hot Girls". Underwhelming.

Anna von Hausswolff - The Miraculous (2015)
>experimental rock

A slight improvement over Ceremony, still falling into some of the same traps. It takes a much more distinctly rock-based approach than it's predecessor, almost entirely abandoning the floaty ambient pop style. Sounds quite a bit like a lighter Swans with Kate Bush's vocals, but a bit less cooler than that. Hausswolff has an obscene amount of talent as a singer and a composer, and she quite nearly fulfills that talent here, but here she fails to hone in on what makes her really special—her voice.

2.5+

Anthony Davis - Variations in Dream-Time (1983)
>avant-garde jazz, third stream

Makes being completely deconstrucive and out-there sound like the most deliberate thing in the world. The second piece seems to be a marked improvement over the first, with the first's overly loose tendencies almost seeming like pure racket at points, even if that was certainly Davis' intention. The first piece is still solid in it's freeness, but the second piece is a wonderful piece of forboding, minimalist jazz music. An improvement over Lady of the Mirrors.

3.0+

Lou Reed - Berlin (1973)
>art rock

Reed's approach to emotional songwriting is a bit overwhelmingly maudlin, but the songs are really beautiful and the arrangements perfectly delicate. Reed's voice is the powerhouse here, he sounds more tired than I've ever heard a vocalist sound, and it fits the content of the songs perfectly. Some of this is definitely a bit on the nose, which can't take much away from the beautiful, glacial-paced songwriting on display here.

>Breadhead vs Comet
I liked Red a good deal. While more harrowing, considerably more cynical, and I felt, in some cases, underlying sinister, than ITCOKC, I still found it to be a fascinating piece of prog rock. Definitely an adventurous record, and I can see why it is considered a highlight for the band's discography.

Damn. Phil Spector sure knows how to produce some solid pop tunes. I love Be My Baby by The Ronettes, probably is still one of my favorite songs, both the original version and the John Galm cover. I love how you love me is stellar as well. The Ronettes, Paris Sisters were only that definitely stood. The production is catchy, beautiful and lavish, some I expected. Phil really had it down to a formula for sure. My fear though with this record was that considering its 3 and half hour length, that same formula might keep completely draining, boring. And sadly, that did happen starting on the third disc. Which sucked. Hard. There will still some highlights on the third disc, but still very samey samey. And then it just felt like some of the mixing was smudgy so it was kinda sad to me. The Christmas CD wasn't that great either. Admittedly felt phoned in. And I wanted to really love this record. Maybe a relisten will make me even more fond of it, but as of now, in full, it's just draining.

TL;DR: Also, a very difficult match here. In fact, after listening to the Phil Spector, I had relisten to Red to reclarify the winner. And it was. Good job Breadhead, you may advance.

Also, 2 spots left for Tourney #2

Getting busier and busier over the past few months, sorry for being so absent lately. Gonna be getting a new car in the next week or so and probably moving to a new apartment within a few months. Life is kinda stressful. Still have time to check out new music at work but I'm probably gonna stay this inconsistent at posting on /daily/ unfortunately. I'll be getting to that other chart soon I think.

Cool stuff recently.

Favorite has probably been the Brel which I liked way more than I had envisioned. Not my usual style of music but something about it is incredibly well done and strangely intriguing. Considering bumping it up to a 4.5 but I'm gonna give it a few more spins.

Drukqs was all over the damn place but for an hour so long and eccentric it kind of flew by. Lots of amazing ideas in the mix, just wish the piano pieces had been longer and the wacked out DnB had but cut. Great regardless, maybe my 2nd favorite from Apex. Thanks Fish.

Camel and Moondog both surprised me a lot too. The former was some of the more concise prog I've heard and it's basically everything I like about the genre with minimal downsides. You'd expect some heinous stuff looking at the cover but it's great. Moondog was great third stream, one of the better examples of the crossover imo. Weird that such a wild dude could come up with such great music.

Also started Unjust Malaise today and it's very intriguing. None of the movements so far have felt as long as they are and there's some great ideas packed in. I don't know much about Modern Classical but it seems cool. Not sure how long it'll take me to get through but it's nice so far.

Anyway, hmu if you got questions and all that.

>Heavenly - Operation Heavenly
Pretty decent, but not really my thing. Top heavy as well, the first few tracks were actually very enjoyable.
3.5/5
>Django Reinhardt - Djangology
God sometimes I really wished I lived during the time where music like this would be played through the radios, in bars. etc. I honestly love the aesthetic, and I very much enjoy it as background music. It's good, but as a sit down and listen experiment, it doesn't blow you away. Best track would be "Beyond The Sea (La Mer)." Lovely stuff

>Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime
zzz. The other Punk/Hardcore albums I've listened to on this chart did have many negatives going for them while still at least having some sort of element to enjoy. This release has nothing I'd consider "bad" but is just so lackluster and boring in every way. At least the song with the jackass theme woke me up, didn't know it came from this.
4-/11

>Albert Ayler - Lörrach/Paris 1966
Albert Ayler is basically the embodiment of everything so god-awful about free jazz for me. Scrapes off my ears and drives me insane, horrible to listen through.

DJ Screw – Bigtyme Vol. II: All Screwed Up
>Chopped & Skrewed, Southern Hip-Hop, Gangsta Rap
This would be great if all the tracks were like the slow, bass-heavy and trance inducing tracks at the beginning (After I Die is fucking amazing), but I really can’t deal with stuff like Backstreets that sounds like a damaged CD skipping constantly and completely ruins the whole smooth and relaxing yet somehow incredibly strange and melancholic atmosphere of this mixtape. 6/10

I am listening to this and hypothetically it features stuff I would love the fuck out of. It has Rallizes style soloing, Tomokawa style vocals, some charm that is taken from Velvet Underground but way more lo-fi....and yet I am not really digging it. It is just cluttered and feels a little bit tasteless. The way the drum machine on some of the tracks sounded against the guitar and the vocals was just lackluster.

Shrug desu. Maybe I'm starting to lose my edge a bit.
