Let's talk about this bold, exciting, innovative, nice, quirky, fearless artist, Claire Elise Boucher aka Grimey aka Grimes. Always envied, never surpassed.

You better watch this short video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmYgJhrvv84
Vote for Venus Fly video: http://mmva.muchmusic.com/vote/

>it's annoying i know haha, but my albums take a long time to create because i don't buy songs/ hire producers/ writers or engineers. the majority of artists do, so they are able to release music faster. unfortunately it takes me longer because if there's a style i need to learn i just have to figure it out by trial and error, or if im stuck on a lyric or beat sometimes i have to start again. i think it leads to more original product though, and hopefully the fans are happier in the long run. that said, i am making a lot of music right now, but i also want to have more of a sonic theme to this album so i'm using less of the stuff i'm recording. in any case, ill try to be as swift as possible!"

Be nice to Grimes!
>>

it doesn't matter if you don't want to be a pro musician, dip. you're still playing music. you criticized her and said she can't play instruments, but what did you achieve to have the arrogance to deny her skills?

fyi her main instruments are synths, samplers and voice. maybe she isn't very skilled live performer, but she gets tremendous results from them in the studio. this is what really matters.

>>
>>73405018
>but what did you achieve to have the arrogance to deny her skills?
clearly you measure achievement based on fame, which is the last way I would measure achievement. I can't really have a reasonable conversation with someone like that. Music is a mere hobby of mine. It is the last thing I would want to turn into my profession. You obviously have a different opinion for yourself as you are clearly projecting. I respect that but you should respect mine too.

>fyi her main instruments are synths, samplers and voice
I know, that's my point.

>but she gets tremendous results from them in the studio.
I disagree. not tremendous.

>this is what really matters.
yet again, I disagree.
>>
>>73404999
>meanwhile this man releases 2 albums a year and keeps getting better.
I should certainly hope so. Practice makes perfect, after all.
>>
>>73405173
>clearly you measure achievement based on fame
i don't. i measure achievement based on fame, talent and actual results (in this case, music). if you succeed at these 3 things you could call yourself a real successful artist.

>I know, that's my point.
that's your point? dude you questioned her ability to play her instruments >>73403859. did you even see her live? watch this and see how she entertains a festival crowd: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4k3593

>>
>>73405173
>clearly you measure achievement based on fame
Not the anon you were responding to (this is was also >>73404937 .) However...
I'm a classically trained professional musician with extensive performance/touring experience (spanning several continents) in the classical music realm ( (as well as some composition credits in the neo-classical.) Achievement in music is measured by the sounds a given musician creates. Full stop.
Grimes makes wonderful sounding music (both live and on record) assuming you have a taste for her style. Which makes her a great musician in practice (the only sort of greatness that actually counts in my business at the end of the day.) End of discussion.
>>
>>73405323
>actual results
well ain't that vague. stop bullshitting, anon. You clearly measure achievement based primarily on popularity.

>that's your point? dude you questioned her ability to play her instruments
playing "synths, samplers and voice" are not as hard as other instruments.

>btw why did you write here like a retard >>73403859 (You) then here >>73404002 (You) and then here you changed your whole approach and even the capitalisation of your sentences?

>>

>making objective statements on an objectively subjective matter

>>
>>73405450

...objective statements about how things are properly measured (which is an OBJECTIVE topic) - not how those measurements are then properly interpreted (which is the SUBJECTIVE portion of thins to which you are erroneously referring in reference to my comments.) I thought you said you were a lawyer?
>>
>>73405433
>well ain't that vague. stop bullshitting, anon. You clearly measure achievement based primarily on popularity.
do you know better than me how i measure achievement, ffs? for instance, grimes is barely known in the grand scheme of things (e.g. compared to taylor swift). i like her because i enjoy her music, simple as that. she achieved what she wanted: to be the world's best weird popstar.

>playing "synths, samplers and voice" are not as hard as other instruments.
idiotic reply. is this a competition of instruments, like if you play a harder instrument you're automatically superior? that's stupid. btw, try playing synths and samplers and singing with decent results to see how "easy" it is.

>What is your point? You're being pedantic on irrelevant matters.

Don't you think that the lives of many fans in general are empty? I've seen many of these threads and everyone posts about how much they love Grimes and her music, but it's simply too much, more often than not they're saying that she's a goddess when she clearly isn't one, she has many flaws and also her music. She's good, but not the best.

She's a human, so stop worshiping her so much, it looks disgusting and it's not funny. She would probably feel scared reading the worshippers' posts.

And I almost forget, Grimes is pretty basic, she's a professional musician with the level of an intermediate player.

Thanks a lot for the list and upload, very kind of you! I'm a user of Spotify Premium myself, so I can find most of the songs through the client, but I'll take the mixtape regardless because some songs don't seem to be available. Thanks again!

You're welcome. One more thing: I'd like to see your opinion about this mixtape after you listen to it. You could post on this thread or a new one, assuming this one will die.

>she's a professional musician with the level of an intermediate player.
Anon, if Grimes is a professional musician, then whatever level of live playing ability she has is what it takes to be at a professional level, by definition.
>>
>>73414702
Btw, I do have to say that from Art Angels I -did- like SCREAM a lot. It kinda feels as if she could make fucking awesome hip-hop/post-deathmetal-influenced tracks with the dark feel and heavy-hitting screams along with Aristophanes' Mandarin verses.
>>
>>73414740
Fwiw her most recent release (another collab with Aristophanes https://youtu.be/BHmVqMISPLw ) is along similar lines. So imo it wouldn't be wildly unrealistic to expect to hear more of that from her next album (she tends to go through a distinct musical phase with each of her records.)
>>
>>73414740
Grimes tried many things in her music. IMO almost everything worked fine. Try also Medieval Warfare which is low key Scream.

Also Ya Vas Lyubil which was the prototype of Scream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiVPvFy69NY

Maybe you will like this incredible live version of Symphonia IX too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSWwVYuqsVM

The last part is so intense. Fucking amazing.

Ya Vas Lyubil is amazing and the same counts for Symphonia IX live. Didn't think it would sound this good. I like her playing around with the cutoff and res values on Circumambient, the atmosphere of her live gigs is awesome. Somehow it even reminds me of Trent Reznor's industrial sound. Think I'm starting to like her
>>
>>73414972
Also I don't know how Grimes and Russian became a combo but I dig it. Have personally been studying the language for a while now, especially the literary side, so this speaks to me on a ton of levels.

Well, she's a NIN fan.

>That’s why, in describing the unique, at times painfully paradoxical position she occupies in the pop world, she’s probably more inclined to align herself with Nine Inch Nails mastermind and inveterate DIY-er Trent Reznor than anybody else: “Trent Reznor started out making music on computers,” she says. “He was smart. He was into math. He was coming at it from an intellectual perspective and a scientific perspective. He made Pretty Hate Machine all by himself. That’s where I came from.”

>In returning to the alternative rock sounds she gravitated to in high school—not just in Reznor but also in mainstream iconoclasts like Marilyn Manson and Billy Corgan—she says she’s also coming home to the truth of the Grimes project: “Representing the alternative,” she says. “Not having to answer to a big label. Not having to answer to anyone artistically, but also being visible. I think being visible is important to me because I’m trying to represent something politically.” I ask her what she thinks that is. “That women can do technical work,” she says without missing a beat. “That I can be a producer and a pop star and also very experimental.”

Her music taste is diverse, from Skinny Puppy, The KLF and Tool to Mariah Carey, Dolly Parton and Depeche Mode.

Her grandmother has Ukrainean origins. She loves Russian culture: their classical music, literature, films etc. She can even speak a bit of Russian and on the cover of Visions her name is written in that language too.

> What was behind the choice to put a Russian poem on your album cover?

My grandma’s Ukrainian, and because my parents worked a lot I basically grew up with my grandparents, hearing Russian spoken a lot. They’re actually lines from two different poems by Anna Akhmatova, two different approaches to death. I kind of identified with her – she wrote a lot of poems about being a girl in the scene, all that shit. She’s a pretty cool lady. I also just wanted to put some writing on the cover, because I like the way fonts look.

As you can guess, her Russian fans adore her.

Couldn't tell from the wording whether you were referring to it or Scream. And since Scream is better known, I went with the safer bet.
>>
>>73415067
Tool, Depeche Mode, and Nine Inch Nails are bands I've been listening to from a young age, gotta hand it to her, she seems really diverse in where she gets her inspiration from.

>>73415101
The exact same counts for this, it's pretty original for an artist of this kind of music to incorporate literature and lyrics from a relatively underrepresented country in the Western world. I've heard her being called a Renaissance woman, and I think I understand why now. She's a super relatable person with the varied taste in genres and interest in literature, films, and classical music.

>>73415166
You're right, by the way. Understandable. I just had the luck that I recognized the name Aristophanes, which caught my interest because of Greek mythology, and decided to check the first song I could find of her out. Wasn't disappointed at all, had it on repeat for an hour
>>
>>73415166
Actually now I've almost finished the mixtape, I recognize a lot of her synthesizer/FX-usage as things I would do or ideas I wanted to implement. Some of her songs are quite like stuff I've been working on in the past year, especially the more industrial-sounding ones. There's a bunch of similarities in chord progression and (reverb usage). My opinion of her changed completely because of you anon, thanks

In which case, why are you posting on 4chan?
>>
>>73415220
>I've heard her being called a Renaissance woman, and I think I understand why now.
That's right. She was inspired by Hildegard von Bingen. Grimes is truly interesting because of her peculiar vision which includes influences from sci fi (Dune, Star Wars, Tarkovsy's films), fantasy (Lord of the Rings, Final Fantasy), Japanese culture, Russian culture, medieval music, industrial music, synthpop and so on. There's a pasta about that: >>73401346

About Hildegard:
>Hildegard of Bingen, O.S.B. (German: Hildegard von Bingen; Latin: Hildegardis Bingensis; 1098 – 17 September 1179), also known as Saint Hildegard and Sibyl of the Rhine, was a German Benedictine abbess, writer, composer, philosopher, Christian mystic, visionary, and polymath. She is considered to be the founder of scientific natural history in Germany.

>Hildegard was elected magistra by her fellow nuns in 1136; she founded the monasteries of Rupertsberg in 1150 and Eibingen in 1165. One of her works as a composer, the Ordo Virtutum, is an early example of liturgical drama and arguably the oldest surviving morality play. She wrote theological, botanical, and medicinal texts, as well as letters, liturgical songs, and poems, while supervising miniature illuminations in the Rupertsberg manuscript of her first work, Scivias. She is also noted for the invention of a constructed language known as Lingua Ignota.

>Although the history of her formal consideration is complicated, she has been recognized as a saint by branches of the Roman Catholic Church for centuries. On 7 October 2012, Pope Benedict XVI named her a Doctor of the Church.
>>
>>73415257
Can't take credit for that (my only posts in this conversation were >>73414862 and >>73415166 ) but cool!
>>
>>73415257
She's hard to pin down. Someone who listened only to her latest album Art Angels would get an incomplete perspective of how diverse she is. That early stuff has been done by herself using just a computer with GarageBand installed, a Roland Juno-G synth, a Roland sampler and some pedals and effects. She did all that without knowing music theory or music producing.

She was and she is really ambitious:
>A former goth kid from Vancouver, Claire originally moved to Montreal to study Russian literature at McGill University, before switching to the neuroscience course. Music never seemed like a viable option until she started hanging out at La Brique's predecessor Lab Synthèse, where she was encouraged to produce her own tracks by her now-manager and engineer Sebastian Cowan. When Lab Synthèse's co-founder David Matthew Peet killed himself in 2008, she decided that she owed it to him to submit to her to true calling.

>"I was like: 'Fuck, I could die. We could all die, at any time. Why the hell am I wasting my time? I'm just going to do what I want to do for the rest of my life. I don't need money.'" To the mild horror of her parents, Claire turned her back on the world of brain biology to pursue Grimes full time. "I've completely fucked my life," she admits cheerily. "I don't live anywhere, I don't see my friends. You have to sacrifice a lot of things to do this. But the pay-off is this incredible freedom."

>"Visions was an extremely cathartic album to make. I went through a period a few years back when I was really addicted to drugs. Two of my best friends died, I had this really fucked-up assault experience and I was constantly in and out of terrible relationships. I never really dealt with all that, but I eventually realised that by making songs I could work through these things that had been plaguing me for years."

I really suggest you giving a chance to Geidi Primes, Halfaxa and Visions. They're huge growers; one day you kinda like them and the next day you couldn't stop playing them. All these albums have an industrial vibe in stark contrast to her fragile voice. Behind the pop facade there's an experimental alien structure.

Imo something worth noting about your list:
1974: Autobahn
1977: Suicide (s/t)
1978: The Man-Machine
1979: The Pleasure Principle
1980: Freedom of Choice
1981: Architecture and Morality
1983: Power, Corruption and Lies
1990: Violator

2010: Halfaxa
2011: WMBtPCoO

2012: Visions
2015: Art Angels

Great music like fine wine - it has to be left to sit for a good long while before it can be appreciated as anything more than a sugary mess. Maybe 2012-onward is just too recent for you to be able to fully appreciate anything made up to now.

PS: What about Grimes' half of Darkbloom, which - imo - would be hands-down better tham Halfaxa (my personal favorite of her albums to date as well) if it were a full length?

>well it's not like I listened to those other albums when they came out
That's precisely my point. Music is neither created nor listened to in a vacuum.

Just like any other form of art, what surrounds a musician during their creative process (life experiences, cultural/music trends) has a profound subconscious (and/or conscious) effect on what it is they create - a creator context, if you will. Likewise, what surrounds a listener (life experiences, cultural/music trends) while they are listening to a particular work of music has a profound (usually) subconscious effect on how they feel about what they're hearing - a listener context, if you will. As a rule, a particular piece of music is always going to resonate the most with people whose listening context is similar to the creator context of the person who created it (i.e. people sharing a particular time and place/cultural background and knowledge of musical trends.)

This is actually the central conceit of pop music. Pop music is just music that manages to give (oftentimes accidentally) to a large group of people the impression that its context of creation is/was the same as their context in listening. By playing off of this shared sense of cultural time/place and the instant emotional resonance in most listeners it creates, music which by itself might be deemed absolutely awful gets routinely crowned as the greatest thing since sliced bread.

But what happens when the general public's listening context shifts away (as it inevitably does since time/levels of knowledge/cultural trends are always changing) from what was encoded (STRONGLY encoded in the case of "pop music") in a particular piece of music? If the music can't hold up on its own then it gets perceived as being "dated", falls out of fashion, and eventually gets ignored/forgotten by all but the most ardent music enthusiasts (ever heard of a little genre called disco?)

[1/2]

>>73424471
>[1/2]
>>
>>73424471
[2/2]
On the flip side, if a piece of music IS good enough by itself to hold up on its own (which is to say, it manages to resonate emotionally with a large group of people whose listening context ISN'T remarkably similar to the creator context of the person who created it) then it gets called "classic", and is remembered for many years to come (long enough, and it gets the super-special treatment: being called "classical" music.)

>>73421781
>well it's not like I listened to those other albums when they came out
If, like me, you happen to be one of those people whose listener context tends to be well out of the mainstream (which is to say, you actively dislike most contemporary pop music and most of your favorite music comes from eras you personally didn't experience) chances are that you will never be able to fully enjoy music being made right now/recently until after pop culture norms/music trends have distanced themselves enough from it that you no longer have a strong association betweeen the two. Which WILL happen eventually - the only question is how long.

So yeah - when the top-40 dreck on the radio stops sounding (to you) like Art Angels, THAT is when you should go back and revisit it to see if you actually like it.

Sure, but why wouldn't I like Art Angels/Visions if I liked We Must Become and Halfaxa, if all of those albums were released withing 5 years of each other? Also, I've never associated Art Angels with the mainstream, it sounds too different, although you are right about the contemporary pop thing. For me (Although I've heard this criticism be lobbed many times), I've never thought about Art Angels as being "too poppy", or any of that bullshit, I just don't like how it sounds, regardless of the interesting layering and experimentation. And it's not that it's "too experimental", either. I'll gladly enjoy shit like HNW or those weird brands of classical, AA just doesn't resonate with me. I will give it another try though.

>Sure, but why wouldn't I like Art Angels/Visions if I liked We Must Become and Halfaxa
Because neither Halfaxa nor WMBtPCoO sounded anything like mainstream pop records being made at the time. They're both (imo) thoroughly retro sounding - Maus of electronica circa the 1980s and Grimes of electronica circa the 1180s.

Halfaxa is a radically anachronistic album (the only one I know of desu.) Imo that's one of the main reasons why it's so cool:
>"This album is more like medieval times," she explains. "I feel like there's this vague aesthetic idea that pervades the album. It's not totally gimmicky, it's just sort of this weird abstract idea of what is medieval and what the dark ages would sound like if they could be interpreted in an electronic means... I want to combine the feeling of sitting in a beautiful church with a reverb-y choir, but I want to combine that with the feeling of dancing to really good music. They're both really animalistic interpretations of beauty but I wanted them to happen at the same time for the listener."
http://exclaim.ca/music/article/grimes_talks_medieval_times_of_halfaxa

>I guess that sounds weird but Halfaxa is sort of my ‘medieval’ album. I wanted to attempt to evoke the feeling of believing in God in a very Medieval Christian way. I wanted to capture the beauty of being in a beautiful cathedral and hearing reverbed (naturally), devotional, vocal music and really believing in heaven and hell, and that the art that you are experiencing (visually, architecturally, sonically etc) is related to a higher platonic, metaphysical space, or comes directly from it through the medium of the artistic prophet. Hildegard von Bingen is my idol right now, and I feel like she would be a good example of someone through whome God spoke and beautiful music was made via her body by a divine being (or so she claims, and I’d like to believe). I feel like art in the middle ages was always addressing something beyond earthly experience, and I want to do the same. But I wanted it to be vague as to what it is beyond earthly experience that is being addressed.
http://forthebeat.com/blog/2010/09/interview-with-grimes/

Saint (now) Hildegard von Bingen died in 1179 - hence why I referenced the 1180s.

Okay, I know Claire personally. I don't feel comfortable sharing this as she may find out who leaked this without her permission, but I know I'm amongst trustworthy friends here who will protect me and have my back. A few years back, me and Claire, along with a small group of 6 other people did a volunteer event in which we presented a seminar/workshop for foster kids. The purpose of the event was for young adults who were separated from their parents to asks questions and receive advice from our panel about what to do after high school. Those in the panel were staying in the same hotel and thought car pooling would better since it meant less rental cars and pollution, etc. I was in the group that Claire was in. We would take turns throughout the day switching up the driver. I remember Claire was asked to drive and pick us up some food we had ordered. I decided to go with her to help her out. This is where I got to meet the real Claire Boucher. While driving towards a 4 lane intersection I noticed the stoplight coming up had gone from green to yellow. The law states that a yellow light states for caution and that all drives should begin slowly their vehicles down, prepping for stoppage. Claire however did not. She did the exact opposite. She speed right through the yellow. I was flabbergasted. I couldn't believe what I just saw. Immediately I said to Claire, "do you realize what you just did". She simply replied "yeah, we almost got stuck in some nasty traffic". I couldn't believe that Claire had the audacity to say something like that so nonchalantly. I've never seen someone break the law before and show not even the slightest bit of sympathy or remorse. After that day, I never saw Claire the same nor did I want to be near her ever again.

I'm confused - the ceremony hasn't even started yet, but that one is already known. Is this one of those deals where the give/announce certain awards (that they can't fit into the main ceremony due to time constraints) early?
