Hello /gg/, I've recently started learning to play guitar on a shitty squier strat and I've been looking to get a better guitar. I was browsing goodwill.com and I saw this listing. I noticed immediately that the body of this guitar is similar to a jazzmaster and that the guitar only has a single pickup. It is also made in Japan apparently. Do you think it would play good or should I just pass? It's relatively cheap right now. Thanks.

wew double reply to the same guy

1. yes if youre only working 6 hour days you'll have plenty of time. consider most people work eight or nine hour days (7+1 or 8+1) plus an hour or two of total commute time.

although it depends a lot on what you mean by 'freelance'. if youre playing nightly gigs and have to get up early for work the next day, you might be in for a rough go. if youre just sitting at home practicing and producing you should have no problems.

2. that description just sounds like a regular person. a manchild imo is somebody who can't do anything for themselves and needs to be taken care of.

>>73278612
pass!

only buy from craigslist if youre shopping for a particular item and you happen to find it online and in good condition. i dont want to say craigslist/2nd hand stuff is bad, but ive bought enough stuff to know that 2nd hand impulse buys rarely work out well. do your research and find out exactly what kind of guitar you want (by going to a guitar store and testing out every guitar they have) BEFORE you start shopping.
>>
>>73278761
Alright I'll pass but unfortunately I can't use craigslist because I live in a pretty small town. I'll see if any pawn shops are selling guitars though
>>
>>73278839
ebay will ultimately be your best bet for finding used instruments if you so choose

pawn shop guitars are often overpriced for the quality you're getting, but can be a bargain if you buy during a sale. a lot of times pawn shops are just selling stickers (ie will price guitars based solely on brand rather than playability or condition).

the most important part of the guitar is the neck; almost everything else can be fixed/replaced. if the neck is warped or the frets are a) too worn down or b) uneven then you'll be in for a serious and costly repair. if a shop/person is selling a guitar with a high action, theyre probably doing it to hide a problem with the neck of the guitar! be careful!

stock speaker is really nice, albeit a little dark. replace it with a g12t for a brighter crunch.

Can an eq pedal make a metal tone "tighter"? I like my amp's dirty channel, the problem is that I can't get anything past classic metal.I want to get a more modern metal sound. I am planning on getting the mxr 10 band eq pedal because I heard that you can "open up" the sound of an amp's dirty channel by dialing the right settings. I don't want to run a distortion pedal through the clean channel, because as I said, I like the tone of the dirty channel, just wished it had more "oomph" to it.

Anyone have any experience with Rivera Clubster Royale and specifically its lead channel? How does it handle metal? Thoughts on Rivera in general?
>>
>>73282519
Had a Knuckle Head Tre year back. Really great clean channel and the crunch and lead channels were great too.
>>
>>73282629
So I've heard. I actually contacted Rivera and some nice guy assured me that the Royale can keep up with high gain amps very well. He described the distortion as smooth but on their videos the sound is quite gnarly, so I guess it's a matter of having the right settings.
>>
>>73282788
They are known for their clean and their dirty has a lot of room from slight od to crunch to all out metal. It depends on who you buy the amp from, but if you dont like it, most place will take it back no questions asked for a full refund or money towards another amp.
>>
>>73282827
I live in Finland and because we don't have a Rivera distributor anymore, I'd order it from Thomann. If I remember correctly, their return policy is quite good.

My main goal is to get an amp that can handle 80's and 90's black and death metal on a reasonable volume. Essentially a high end practice amp for metal. A little help from a pedal is acceptable. I already have another amp for softer music. My other choise is the Marshall Mini Jubilee but the Royale seems more versatile.

I always though of "drop" voicings a bit more spread out, you take a chord and you knock one of the notes lower, while with the inverted ones you just go up the neck and remain on the same set of strings, but I agree, they are very similar and I could be totally wrong. In the end, the actual terminology is not that important, as long as you know what is the type of sound you are after.

I think you should start without pedals and then decide what sounds you want after you played a while. Also, half the job is having an amplifier that's good quality and right for your music genre. I'd get that down first.

Dirty amp (Marshall, Peavey, Soldano, etc) and a bridge humbucker is a good start. You can also use whatever the fuck kind of amp you want with a bridge humbucker and use a pedal for the gain. Punk isn't too picky with how it sounds as long as it's dirty

Get a chord book and just read through it. Or try to remember the different notes on the guitar's fretboard. I personally spent quite a long time just remembering where all of the notes in C were on the fretboard, and it helped me figure out which chords to use, and where their 3rds were.
Throwing that alongside the CAGED system, and you're pretty much almost set to play anything as long as you know how to properly barre chords.

Limit fast playing to a certain number of beats. Play a melody then play fast again. Repeat.
>>
>>73296407
I have and it's insane how many choices there are out there. I agree with you though, my Bass Big Muff is like a default sound. It does the job I need it to but I want some thing crazy loud and fuzzy pedal that'll shake rooms and push my amp hard.

I liked the Supercollider fuzz but no way I can get that right now. EQD has the new Erupter and Fuzz Master General that's just out right crazy fuzz, I dig it on bass. Malekko Diabolic is also fucking heavy on the lows.

Idk might just go with a Rat based distortion like the IdiotBox Effects Blower Box or Fuzzrocious Rat Tail.

Thanks for the (You) reply.

You probably want an amp sim, trying to get a good tone out of stock DAW plugins sucks for anything other than a really simple clean. Guitar Rig and Amplitube are popular, but they don't sound that great. I hear BIAS is good, but maybe that's just the shills

I already know how to play other instruments and a fairly decent level like a wind instrument or the piano so I can also read music sheets easily.

>>
>>73299654

>>
>>73299654
Honestly I think the best thing you can do for this is record yourself and listen back to your playing, you will almost certainly not sound as good as you think while you're playing. Listening to your own playing from a third person point of view then going back and correcting what you think is less than ideal is the best way to improve imo.At least that's how it is for me, it's common sense beyond that.
>>
>>73299924
Very funny. Every time I try to do this I get a bunch of shit about amp settings, nothing to do with actual playing.

I'm trying to get guitar tone in Paper Cuts by Nirvana here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMDGO8RjJEg
but the only pedals I have are a Big Muff, a boss sd-1 (yellow mid-boosting overdrive) and a boss blues driver clone. I feel like the muff will be too 'wall-of-sound' to get the distortion definition so I want to try and make the tone of the Big Muff more piercing with the sd-1 placed before it, bringing the mids back in that the big muff scoops, making it more well heard. Will something like this work/sound defined enough?
I know it's a bit ridiculous so don't just tell me to get a ds-1 instead, or that it's silly to try to make the big muff sound like something else, or that the tone in the example isn't 'defined', it's just what in a direction i'm looking for. I just want to know if you'll think it'd work.
>>
>>73303523
>I want to try and make the tone of the Big Muff more piercing with the sd-1 placed before it, bringing the mids back in that the big muff scoops, making it more well heard. Will something like this work/sound defined enough?
