i'm co, you're co, he, she, we are co

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Half Japanese - Horrible (1982)
>Noise Rock
A chaotic quickie from the fine boys of Half Japanese. Beefheart-agenda-set rock 'n' roll with that trademark Half Jap half-assedness. The lyrics are all depraved and horror-themed, which is cute. Some songs have a neat little groove ("Thing With a Hook," "Vampire") while some just flail about aimlessly ("Don't Go to Bed," "Walk Through Walls").

you think that's horrible? get a load of this. Worst thing I've heard in a good while:

The KLF - Mu (1996)
>Stadium House, Acid, Instrumental Hip-Hop
It's very unclear how self-aware this isn't. The first track, "3 A.M. Eternal (Live at the S.S.L.)" is not even a real live recordings, so the crowd cheering and rapper/hype man were perhaps included facetiously? "Justified and Ancient (All Bound for Mu Mu Land)" fits in with the band's formative mysticism themes, but does so in the cheesiest way possible. Over an already corny disco/house fusion beat, a pop soul vocal awkwardly croons scripture, hyping up the band as Gods in their own slapdash pseudo-religion, separated by basic rapping and hyping ('bring the beat back!', 'let's go to the bridge now!', 'shake your booty!'). I can't tell if it'd be funnier if this were ironic.

A lot of these beats are actually pretty great too (think 808 State with a bigger sound), they just get swamped by awfully cheesy singing and somehow even worse rapping. Like, why is the best part so low in the mix?

Citrus - Wispy, No Mercy (2000)
>Noise Pop
This is bizarre. Chaotic Japanese noise pop is not exactly rare, but the way this EP delivers it is startlingly unique.

The songwriting is bizarre. Within each song, progression is just so scattershot. They're flying all over the place, melodically and stylistically. Like, it's catchy as hell, it's just completely unpredictable.

The production is bizarre. Parts are shoe-gazing noise pop bliss, a sweet symphony of sound, while others are janky and lo-fi. It actually sounds like live and studio recordings were both mashed together in the mix. It's bizarre.

so much fucking fun. this thing was just off the walls nuts. its full of pitched up vocals, trap hihats, ridiculous tempos, red bull ads, goofy synths, the whole works. its just an all around awesome DJ mix that gives a great taste as to what PC Music is all about. very well may rise to a 4 soon.

i agree with the majority that the atmosphere on this is superb, but the music itself didn't capture me that much. there were some moments that were absolutely gorgeous (12 minutes in) but other than that the music was just pretty good. but, again, the atmosphere really raises the mood and feel of this album

man, this feels like something i should love but i just wasnt really feeling it. theres a lot of krautrock-y rhythms on here, and very pretty, psychedelic melodies, lots of subtle experimentations and good orchestration, but i was just kinda bored i guess. i do feel like if i revisit this later on, itll grow on me (or maybe even click). but, for now, it was alright.

Sympathy Nervous - No More Expo (1980)
>Minimal Synth
Viscious lo-fi synth shit from 80s Japan, with an intense rhythmic focus. The tracks on the first half of the album are all really long (pushing 6-7 minutes) and almost tedious for how repetitive they are--they're instead, weirdly hypnotic though, so the time flies. The second half is much shorter, but no softer than the first. It's almost proto-techno with how crazed and hard-hitting it is. The Pink Floyd cover here ("Heart of the Sun") is virtually unrecognizable.

Women - Public Strain (2010)
>Post-Punk, Indie Rock
This isn't as mysterious as the cover would have you believe. Most of the material here boils down to pop songs coated thick in reverby ooze.

Not a terrible aesthetic for these guys. The songs are pretty great; the vocal harmonies evoke Beach Boys-esque effortlessness of motion. "Eyesore," in particular, is kind of a marvel, taking angular melodic turns down a highway to a blissful coda.

Not sure why I put this off for so long.

last one for the night

Active Child - You Are All I See
>Synth Pop
Stately but massive synth pop, built for the stadium. Phil Collins influence is written all over this thing (but that could also be partly by the design of producer Ariel Rechtshaid). Also cool though is the modern classical influences also in the fold. Delicate piano, dulcimers, and synthetic strings play all over these songs, adding an extra layer of faux-sophistication (really in itself its own appreciable aesthetic) to the already rich synthesized textures.

Songs like the cascading pop waltz "Hanging On" are the standouts here (that song in particular), while the worst ("Playing House") are shitty pseudo-pop raps set to synthesizers (think One Direction, extra auto-tuned, with an orchestra of synths backing). Really not sure what they were thinking with that one. The lyrical content throughout is that of somewhat trite anti-love songs, but the mournful, soaring falsetto vocals make up for whatever they're saying.

Dude wears a turtleneck and blazer on stage. Just imagine the kind of music that guy makes.

Melvins - Gluey Porch Treatments

The Melvins successfully blend punk, metal, and a touch of psychedelic rock on Gluey Porch Treatments. A handful of the trademarks of the genre they are famous for pioneering, Sludge Metal, is the use of guitar feedbacking, the occasional off key note, and drawly shouted vocals , Buzzo uses these to great effect throughout this album. Tempo switches mid song from hardcore to stoned out doom metal ones. Some of the songs on here, such as the titular “Gluey Porch Treatments,” are below one minute in length, but they certainly don’t feel like it.
Strong 4

The United States of America - s/t

I was immediately surprised when hearing this album just how ahead of its time it was in so many ways. There’s still a heavy presence of classic rock and roll tropes of course, but the keys and even bass work in the album can get pretty far out, man. Noisy hits, droning parts in the back that almost sound out of key, phasers all over, and plenty more quintessentially psychedelic effects. They even have a violinist, an electric one specifically, which adds even more to their sonic personality. A must listen for anyone vaguely a fan of psychedelic music.
Honestly this is incredible. strong 4.5 I think, maybe even a 5

Sampha - Process (2017)
>alternative R&B

There is some amazing production on here, especially in the more frenetic, busy tracks. "Kora Sings" and it's addictive, technicolor production is one of the best songs I've heard all year, and "Timmy's Prayer" isn't far behind. Sampha's strengths might lie mainly in production, but his singing is great as well, very much in that same ghostly James Blake-esque register. The slower songs are where this album really takes a dive. There's nothing bad about them, but there's nothing good about them either, they're just slow, plodding piano ballads without any really memorable features. An album that focuses on Sampha's production would be wonderful, as is this is still pretty nice.

2.5+

Paramore - After Laughter (2017)
>new wave, alternative dance

This Talking Heads-lite style is so popular now, and it's weird to see Paramore doing it better than anything else. Williams' charismatic vocals lead every single track here, even the ones that aren't that great. Technically she is a great singer, and she holds her own on ballads, but the tracks where she lets loose over more colorful instrumentation are the album's best. Both of the singles and "Grudges" are damn fine pop tracks, but the band does get stuck in a bit of a rut over the rest of the album. It tends to repeat itself rather often production wise, and the songwriting can sometimes seem quite weak when compared to the sound itself. I still gotta say, I'm pleasantly surprised by this.

Djeli Moussa Diawara - Yasimika (1983)
>mande music

This is really damn pretty, if too one-note in its approach. Diawara occasionally re-uses some melodic lines in his playing, and I guess it can't entirely sustain a whole album, but god, it's some damn expressive, emotional, beautiful playing. The balafon playing is gorgeous too, I love the way that instrument sounds. The whole album is also very meditative and free-flowing, which adds to the appeal. I'm not as burnt up about this as some people are, but I still really like it.

3.0+

Hallelujah Chicken Run Band - Take One (2006)
>jit

Once again, very one-note and with some songs that don't really hit their mark, but it's feel-good pop through and through. The guitar work here is great, it's poppy and simple but still really groovy and rhythmic, and the call and response vocals are great. The relatively simple percussion is nice as well, most songs just use either or a shaker or a repeated hi-hat and it works really well. Some really great stuff spread over a slightly bloated package.

Simon & Garfunkel - Bookends (1968)
>folk pop, folk rock

They tap into a really damn cool sound on a couple songs here. The first three tracks are unreasonably good. "Bookends Theme" is just a little instrumental guitar piece that would be uneventful on its own right, but the way it just crashes into the over-the-top, noisy "Save the Life of My Child", is amazing. That track is really something else, it's S&G's attempt at acid-fried psych rock, high-pitched synths and all, and it somehow works incredibly well. "America" brings the album back to more typical territory, but it does that in a wonderful with one of the band's prettiest and most evocative songs. From there on, the quality dips. "Fakin' It" is another upbeat psych-ish number that also works weirdly well, and "Mrs. Robinson" is, well, "Mrs. Robinson", but the rest is pretty standard S&G fare.

The first minute of this had me interested into what this was going to become, however nothing else came of it besides meandering. - I still don't like jazz and especially not free jazz.
4+/11

>David Holland Quartet - Conference of the Birds
Mostly the same as above, except a bit more focused with it's playing but lacking the calm tense drum-free interludes on Compulsion.
4+/11

Was hoping to like Dialoghi more but oh well.
Jimmy Jazz next.

>steve reich - the desert music
it's reich with a chorus - the instrumental bits sound like reich (repetitive, energetic strings and piano), and the chorus does its best to sound like the instrumental bits, rhythmic and constantly propelled forward, but never overly layered or complex in harmony. moments of beauty plenty, but never goes above a certain level.

I recently found out that some people use "Hauntology" as a genre when they talk about music of Ghost Box Records and I'm fairly fucking mad at this because even if their music is thematically hauntological using it in this way to narrowly describe a certain musical style erases the theoretical meaning behind a term that we are in dire need of.

>Joshua Abrams & Natural Information Society - Simultonality
Judging by the use of the same cover art with different colors in combination with a similar name, I'm assuming this is the sister album to Magnetoception which is one of my favorites from 2015. The style is kinda different since Natural Information Society bring more instrumental variety as well as a faster tempo. Songs from Magnetoception took their time to build and explore rhythms whereas songs from this album establish themselves quickly and layer instruments on top of each other. This results in a lack of atmosphere and depth, but on the other hand it is much more immediate and groovy. This album seems to be influenced more by psych rock than spiritual jazz. Once again Abrams absolutely kills it on the bass and propels each song with his playing style. I hardly care for the bass in a lot of jazz but his consistent, rhythmic playing is extremely engaging instead of being played in the background. Additionally, the varied percussion adds that psychedelic, drum circle vibe which I loved from Magnetoception. I highly recommend this to people who like big band jazz with a focus on rhythm.

>Dave Holland Quartet - Conference of the Birds
This was solid. I love organized chaos jazz and bird motifs. I especially love when the chaos is broken up by gorgeous songs like the title track. The album sounds like a more light-hearted version of one of my favorite albums of all time Richard Abrams - Levels and Degrees of Light with some minor tropical elements from McCoy Tyner - Sama Layuca. So it comes of no surprise to me that Anthony Braxton is also involved in this album. This is an album that needs more listens and more attention, but it had a great first impression on me. I could see this going up in the future. Maybe I'll properly review it then.

>John Fahey - The Great Santa Barbara Oil Slick
You know a live album has succeeded when you desperately wish you were actually there as you listen. Fahey seems like such a sweet guy judging by his stage banter. I liked pretty much everything here though nothing truly grabbed me like Fare Forward Voyagers did. This too needs more listens and more attention, but I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Something feels very wrong about panning someone (Kanzler) who left so recently.. it's like making fun of someone who just died :/. Overall: 2.80
>Placebo - Meds
Bad album in a genre that isn't good to begin with. It's alt rock man, at least have catchy hooks or something. I'd listen to something like BMTH - That's the Spirit over this anyday honestly. It's mainly just annoying. "Pierrot the Clown" and "Song to Say Goodbye" were actually kinda good, though.
2/5
>Einstürzende Neubauten - Strategies Against Architecture III (1991-2001)
Interesting at times, but overall not very captivating, and often boring and/ or cheesy. I don't like his voice at all.
2.5/5
>Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band - 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons
His voice man.. it's fucking TERRIBLE. Like really, really bad. Just stop singing, jesus christ. Also I don't really like string-based post rock. The only thing that saved this from being a 1/5 (my rating system skips 1.5/5), is the last track, which was actually decent at a few points. But really, this was not good, and this man needs to never sing again, it's grating.

Colin Stetson name-dropped this guy, for good reason. Lighty jazzy acoustic instrument work, bitter static textures, gently tumbling rhythms, and a rare wind-controlled analog synthesizer from the 1970's-- all improvised. Somehow, Walter managed to construct his own unique sound in this modern day.

The drums aren't on every track-- this is ambient music, at its core. But the jazz influences are clearly there, as Walter is a trumpet player.

Basically don't take my 9/10 too seriously, I'm a sucker for exploratory atmospheres in albums, and the fact that the cover art perfectly represents the music

Hello again!

I went on with the indicidual picks, starting with Loveless, an album probably everyone here has heard, haha
But unfortunately I did not have any strong opinions in this, just like I remember it from my first time listening, I hoped that would have changed. While some songs are very dreamy and melancholic, just like the whole mood, in the sum I couldn't find anything outstanding on it. Something that would make it the best shoegaze album ever, like so many websites and people tell me. I'm pretty sure I am missing something here, but I can't find what. Help me /daily/!

Then, as recommended by alot of people, I listened to Cross Paths by The Motifs and it's fascinating how good you already know my taste ^^ I absolutely loved this, it was so cute and soft and had such wonderful vocals!

Ohh and I completely lost track on what you told me to check out next, so I'm asking again for that, sorry, I will note it down this time...

Went on a chart thread and got recommended stuff, so now I've got to try it all, from what I've listened to thus far;

>The The - Soul Mining. This was brilliant, love the gritty vocals polarized by the dreamy synths, Giant and I've Been Waiting... stuck out the most to me, very much enjoyed it.
>The The - Infection. Didn't concentrate on this as much and it was a slight step down though still enjoyed it nonetheless, it did feel more consistent than the former however even if the tracks didn't really captivate me in the same way.
>The Raincoats - s/t. This was pretty interesting given that I hadn't listened to any female post-punk before and was far better than I had expected, love the jittery guitars and what sound like some bubbly synths. That being said I do feel like it was a bit front-loaded, that Kinks cover really caught me off-guard though.
>Tresspassers William - Anchor. Listening to this at the moment, its not doing much for me though I get the impression it will grow in the future, I've never really been a fan of country/ folk sounding material though the subtle layers of sound and reverb mixed on top of the comfy acoustic guitars is really starting to get pretty enjoyable, especially at this time of night.
>>
>>73254905
The dreamy and melancholic mood of Loveless is pretty much it's whole appeal, so if you didn't dig it there's not much left for you.

You'll probably enjoy Can Future Days and Coil Ape of Naples if you're looking for what to do next.
>>
>>73254905
it took me a long time to "get" why everyone loves loveless, and honestly its just the undeniable best shoegaze out there. theres other great shoegaze albums, sure, but nothing beats the lush melodies and incredible walls of sound on loveless. i guess you could consider it an objectively good listen. if you wanna try something else thats shoegaze, slowdive's on there. ive never heard slowdive tho.

Comus - First Utterance

Comus does a great job of making something remarkably unique using mostly acoustic instruments on this album. From the manic, psychedelic songs like “Diana,” and “Drip Drip,” to the more atmospheric “The Herald,” all the songs are executed well on First Utterance. The second side of this album introduces some more electric instruments, such as the freak out on the track “Bitten.”
4.5+/5, maybe a 5 after more listens

CAN - Tago Mago
I don’t know if I can definitively say there are any “bad” songs on Tago Mago after listening to it, maybe ten or so times. There are some very out there moments in this album, around 30 minutes of it are dedicated to total freakouts with little to no melody or traditional elements of music. Damo Suzuki’s idiosyncratic broken english vocals are great throughout, the drumming is incredible as usual, and the guitars, when present, make some memorable psychedelic jams. The only real complaint I have about this is that I don’t really think they needed to dedicate almost half of the album to their avant-garde sound collages. Still pretty much a perfect album though.
4.5+/5

i suppose the best part about listening to music as obsessively as me is that long albums really don't feel that long after a while

also this chart kinda ruled

Pärson Sound - Pärson Sound (2001)
>psychedelic rock, experimental rock

The tracks here more rooted in rock are really something else. Monolithically heavy for any time period, made all the more impressive by the fact that all this was recorded between 1966 and 1968. It's gotta be one of the most ahead of its time recordings ever, it's metal four years before Sabbath's debut; noise rock two years before White Light / White Heat; and krautrock three years before Phallus Dei and Monster Movie, and these guys aren't even German! Simply from a historical perspective it's incredibly interesting, and the songs more rooted in slow-burning, incredibly heavy rock are really great, but the drone is a bit uninteresting and overlong. The fact that this was obviously not recorded as an album gives it a bit of a pass, but these primitive takes on improvisational drone offer little interesting or new from a compositional or instrumental standpoint. Still cool, just pretty boring. This is still really cool and entertaining, and absolutely massive.

Funny Papa Smith - The Original Howling Wolf 1930 - 1931
>Blues
The guitar work and singing are great, but what really sets this apart is the highly original lyrics and song structures. This isn't your standard twelve-bar "my woman done left me" blues, but still has that raw emotive quality, and touches on themes from a personal angle. The duets with Magnolia Harris are also a very nice touch.
Check this shit out blooz doods.

NoveltyCondom. Overall: 2.83
>Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables
Was this supposed to be a comedy album or something? It really just felt like that to me, not saying that it was funny either. His voice was pretty awful, and I didn't feel like it matched a lot of the descriptors it had. Way too satirical, didn't feel like it took itself seriously at all. This sometimes works, but it didn't here. Was thinking about giving this a 2.5/5, but honestly I can't really think of any compliments I could give this album.
2/5
>Aesop Rock - Bazooka Tooth
Probably the best Aesop Rock I've heard, but that doesn't really say much since I don't like him.. kind of reminds me of Busdriver. I just don't think his voice is good for hip hop, and I don't really like his style either. This was actually pretty decent though, lots of good verses and beats.

Jens Lekman - Life Will See You Now (2017)
>indie pop, singer/songwriter

Seems that I can only get into Lekman when he's in his Oh You're So Silent Jens contemplative chamber pop mood. Lekman's vocals are always great, as are his witty lyrics, but I can't get behind the more electronic-tinged sound of this album. It's danceable, sunny, and pleasant, sure, but it's /so/ sunny and pleasant, there's no edge to it, it's more background music than anything else. Lekman's best songs are 100% sunny and pleasant as well, but they're so much more melodically complex and simply more interesting than the songs here. "Hotwire the Ferris Wheel" is infectious, though.

I think you'll enjoy their good use of melody/cohesive songwriting, an element I think you'd take great value in considering what you enjoy on RYM. Some of the best guitar + vocal work of 80's pop. >Stabscotch - Uncanny Valley
This had some real potential but holy fuck those vocals are absolutely unbearable. The musicality on this album is honestly good, its very aggressive, brutal prog that gets noisy and in-yr-face very well, but those vocals just absolutely ruin it for me. They feel too "edgy" I guess. Idk I just really didn't like this because of them.
2.5-
>Robert Ashley - Wolfman
pretty disappointing desu. wolfman is solid, its a good noise track, definitely impressive for the 60s. everything else on here was just alright. thats all i really have to say.
2.5
>King Tears Bat Trip - s/t
The percussion on this was so overwhelming (in a good way). I loved how chaotic this all was, and it was just awesome to listen to. I had a lot of fun with this album, will definitely continue revisiting it.
3.5-
>Gerogerigegege - Hell Driver
I'm honestly kind of middled about this. This is probably one of the toughest albums I've listened to in a while, not just because of how different and experimental it is, but also because of just how emotionally heavy it is. When Juntaro does sad, he does it as minimalistic as he can, which is against pretty much everything the Gero do. It works, for sure. The first two tracks on here are great, especially the long piano piece that dissolves into nothing. The 30 minute track is good, but I found myself getting distracted 15 minutes in, and I wasn't too gripped by the final tracks. Some parts of this honestly reminded me of Duos for Doris, in terms of atmosphere and emotion and intensity. If it kept that up, this would easily be a 4/5 album. But, for now, I think I'm gonna try and keep revisiting to see if this grows on me anytime soon. Maybe it will.

Giving out a lot of 4.5s lately. I'm not sure if that means I'm more lenient than usual or if I'm just listening to better stuff now that I'm doing freeforms. Anyway, AMA if you want more than these shitty reviews.

Red Crayola was really tight. Realistically, it's just solid psych with some free improv thrown in the mix but the sequencing keeps it interesting and I love the concept. Really cool album but we'll see if it grows or not.

Pharcyde somehow managed to top their debut with some absolutely brilliant jazzy production. Great, fun lyrics as always and songs like "Runnin" and "Drop" are obviously some of the best songs they made.

Components was really solid jazz split into two completely different halves. First half is mellow and almost ambient but the second is avant-garde /free for most of it. First half was better and "Tranquility" is one of the coolest jazz tracks I've heard but it's consistent. Not sure if I like the sequencing though.

Siembra is some groovy, danceable MPB, super consistent stuff. Sucker for this style but I don't know how else to describe it t b h.

Fantasma had some fantastic ideas but it felt like they were packed in awkwardly. Too eccentric and cartoonish for me honestly despite some great moments.

Syro had some absolutely brilliant moments, especially on half one but it gets tiresome over the course of 60+ minutes. Doesn't seem like a long album but it's a bit over-the-top for the concepts, especially with the more hectic tracks on side 2. Still not completely sold on this guy's style, it feels like he comes up with some great ambient ideas but then fucks with you for the rest of the album. Not sure how much I like that but there were some great tracks.

Dando Shaft - An Evening With Dando Shaft (1970)
>progressive folk, british folk rock

This is really nice, it's well-played, cozy, unpretentious folk and not much more. The sound may be stagnant, but the songwriting is deceptively complex, having the outward appearance of some simple guitar strumming, making some insanely complex, classical-inspired guitar lines. The mandolin work is killer too.

Thurston Moore - Rock n Roll Consciousness (2017)
>alternative rock, noise rock

It's a one-trick pony, without a doubt, packed with five driving, repetitive tracks that sound /exactly/ like lost Sonic Youth cuts. While most every track is structured practically the exact same way (soft intro leading to a big crescendo over the repeated addition of more and more instruments over a repetitive bass/drum line), which makes for a slightly tiring record, it's a nice sound that I'm really glad to hear again. It sounds just like a Sonic Youth album from the '90s, and Moore doesn't sound really uncool and overly nostalgic while doing it. Not extraordinary, but a fine return to form and a fine, no frills rock album in its own right. Also, he looks like Ty Segall on the cover.

the main thing that brings me to this comes from how he kills eli. for a movie called There Will Be Blood, up until the final scene, there is a significant lack of blood shown on screen, even in a scene where a man is shot point blank in the head. some have made the connection that this means the blood is the oil, but i think it's more literal than that.
Daniel throughout the entire movie works mechanically, without consequence. despite risking the safety of the lots he is drilling in many times over, the only real time his actions negatively effect him is when he has to confess himself as a sinner. in this scene, eli, within his sermon, fills daniel with what he calls the blood of the lord.
the most excessively bloody scene in the movie comes as daniel kills eli, putting the last nail in the coffin for eli's success. daniel has quietly been plotting this in the back of his mind for years, forcing eli with enough hardship to bring him to his presence.
eli has made a mockery of the town daniel tries to form, giving exaggerated sermons, forcing his way into daniel's plans, asking him to give blessings to his towers, taking credit for his work.
with the drawling of eli's blood, daniel has willed into creation what eli could only make as metaphor. the title of the movie itself and the font used for it give off a biblical vibe. and god says "there will be blood." it's fucking terrifying.
this is all capped off by the last line of the movie, daniel saying directly to the audience, that his plan is finished, and his creation is done.
it has some more stuff floating around, but that's the gist of it. good movie.
