The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

John Abercrombie – The Third Quartet (ECM, 2007)

Guitar and violin is a pretty neat combination for a jazz group, and Abercrombie and Feldman clearly lead the ensemble, with Johnson on bass and Baron on drums providing a solid foundation. I’m not all too impressed with the record, though. It’s a bit too relaxed for me, from start to finish, nothing to really grab my attention that much. I’d have liked more interplay between Abercrombie and Feldman, rather than them taking turns soloing, but then again that’s clearly not the kind of music they were going for here.

I think most people here wouldn't really care for it, not recommended.

Dara Puspita – 1966-1968 (Sublime Frequencies, 2010)

Dara Puspita was an all-girl Indonesian garage rock band, and they sound more or less exactly like The 5,6,7,8’s, for lack of a better comparison. The recordings are fairly crude, but sound good enough. There is no apparent folk influence here at all, it’s straight up American pop music, and had this not been released in Indonesia I probably wouldn’t have been even remotely interested. Surprisingly short for the number of tracks, but no wonder since they’re all just around 2:30 long or so. Very samey throughout.

yeah i have done that. i've got a super roots 7 cd lying around somewhere actually...
>>73229311
hello yes i'll do this systematically.
tim buckley - i listened to starsailor the other day and immediately realised that this album has been incredibly influential either directly or indirectly on a whole bunch of stuff i listen to. i listened to it while doing otherstuff and there was a lot going on so i was planning on listening to it with no distractions sometime soon.
jazz - i've only listened to a little bit of jazz. i want to familiarise myself more with it but the genre is so large and i think i'm mostly just interested in the experimental side, but you can't just skip straight to it or it doesn't make any sense.
minimalism - i have no intelligent thoughts except that i don't know enough about classical music to be able to place it in an important way. like, i've listened to music for 18 musicians and tabula rasa and some basic stuff like that but i just don't feel like i know that terrain well enough to make sense of what i'm listening to other than "i like/don't like this". not that there's anything wrong with that, i'd just like to know more, so i'm trying to explore classical more atm.
pigs - i went to thailand once and the kids made a pig noise by going "oot" instead of "oink oink" and it threw me off.
>>
>>73229350
thank you! one of the better youtube recs i've gotten recently.

There's nothing wrong with skipping to the styles of jazz you're interested in and working backwards; it'd be like saying you can't listen to led zeppelin until you've heard Robert Johnson or something. Jazz shouldn't be intimidating from a historical or theoretical standpoint, after all it was started by black musicians who couldn't read music as a way to fill a set.
Good pig story btw, has me grinning.

Rahsaan Roland Kirk & Al Hibbler – A Meeting of the Times (Atlantic, 1972)

This has some seriously strong improvisations, particularly by Kirk. He’s playing really fast and super clean, and has a great dynamic with Hibbler’s singing. I’ve got to say that it feels a lot older than ’72, though. If I had just heard this as is, I would’ve probably guessed late 30s or 40s. Apart from the really good improvisations, it sounds a lot like your typical “vocal jazz ballad” record from that time period. The only “original” piece is Carney and Begard Place, which is also instrumental and I think the best track on the album, as it features more lengthy improvisations without interruption from vocals.

In discussion, specifically

Then again, I guess glitch /kind of/ falls under the category, if it's music that depends on sounds created solely by malfunctioning hardware or manipilated programs. The musician doesn't know what sounds are going to come from his tools, which isn't unlike indeterminacy

If it's something like glitch hop/pop that just has a certain sound to it, then it's usually not comparable

Ethnic Minority Music of Northeast Cambodia (Sublime Frequencies, 2006)

A great little collection of modern (as in still alive and performed) folk musics from Cambodia. All of it seems to be proper field recordings, but some are too clear in their sound quality and with few background noises for me to be sure. Some of the recordings here are really nice sounding, like the very moody “3-Day Ceremony”. Many new instruments here that I can’t place at all, but definitely a lot of flutes, metal percussion and of course vocals like in most folk music that is used in rituals (which I’m guessing most of this is, although I absolutely lack the cultural context or language to know).

>>73231353

>Doopees - Doopee Time
A really strange record that manages to be extremely charming. I have a soft spot for albums that seem otherworldly or disconnected from reality. It also has some extremely catchy art pop numbers. The main flaw of this album is the random experimental filler that doesn't really serve a purpose. Also, on repeated listens the narrative elements may begin to annoy me, yet they do have an endearing, emotional quality to them.

>White Suns - Sinews
Fucking shreds when the vocalist isn't busy reading his edgy spoken word poetry, trying his best to sound as angry as possible. Also, the production of this album is quite bad. It's supposed to be a fucking noise rock album. I shouldn't have to keep bumping up the volume just to feel some impact. Thankfully, they fix this problem in the album following which is far better and more fleshed out. I have high hopes for their album coming out this year.

>Jaga Jazzist - A Living Room Hush
Commits the cardinal sin of having an interesting opening track that is literally the only good track. It all sounds fine and dandy, but it's just boring background music at the end of the day. It also is just doing the same things as many contemporary bands but worse. It doesn't know what to do with itself. Straight up jazz with no swing, no bite, no emotion? Elevator music? Rip off Amon Tobin and Tortoise? I guess I shouldn't have expected much when I saw the tags nu-jazz and drum and bass. Which, by the way, are never utilized properly in conjunction with each other apart from the opener. Not worth another listen.

After school, with my degree in Microbiology, I got a job testing produce for E. coli and other bacteria. It made $15 an hour. I ended up quitting and going back to school for an advanced certification.
My brother worked at a pizza place when CA announced the living minimum wage. He started making $15 an hour plus tips as a delivery boy.
So you had me, working in a science job that you need a degree for and $20000 in debt, and my brother, delivering pizzas while going to community college, making the same amount. Shit's fucked.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - From Her to Eternity
God fucking damn this is a bad album, and I actually LIKE Nick Cave...
They start with Avelance, a cover of the Leonard Cohen song, ripe material for a quality cover, but a quality cover this is not. Hearing Cave ham the fuck out of this song is downright offensive, considering that it's supposed to be quite reserved and restrained. He's effectively pulling a Christina Aguilera here, over singing the fuck out of everything, it comes across as begging for attention, like he needs to prove it to several reality television contestants under his charge that they will never be as good a singer as him. He does this all over the album, it's fucking insufferable. This album is amateurish and heavy-footed as fuck, I know that Cave and co. can and have done better, hence the score.

>considering that's supposed to be quite reserved and restrained
Sure the original cover is pretty quiet but that doesn't mean Nick has to play the same exact song. Matter of fact I prefer his version much more, because not only he yells as you say but there's also plenty of buildup and atmosphere and his voice and interpretation do fit the lyrics better than Cohen's. The music might feel primitive and a bit simple but in no way amateurish, it sets the mood with little work leaving a lot of room for Cave's vocals which might feel more eccentric because of that. Yet with this kind of raw post-punk I think his kind of singing is what goes best.
>>
>>73233822
>Sure the original cover is pretty quiet but that doesn't mean Nick has to play the same exact song.
You're right, he doesn't have to do that.
I didn't really have that much of an issue with the instrumentation behind him, more his singing in general, which I found to be really grating and over the top, and when the vocals are this prominent and this annoying you have a problem on your hands (in my opinion)

Folk and Pop Sounds of Sumatra (Sublime Frequencies, 2005)

Just like the first volume, this is a cool compilation of pop and folk musics recorded in Indonesia, but there’s clearly a focus on the pop side. Of course, this pop music is heavily influenced by the traditional musics of the area, which is great. The instrumentation is definitely South East Asian in all tracks, and the vocal melodies are really nice.

Hi!

I finished the top row, it has been a great journey so far.

First I heard the Fishmans mixtape, where I didn't like every song, but some moments were just beautiful and aww the singer has such a lovely voice <3
After it I heard the live album from the essentials chart and I can definitely see why you recommended me to hear the mixtape first! These versions are alot more impactful after I heard the originals. Especially the Long Season tracks were soo dreamy and beauteous.

I also did the third borzoi-rec, Yellow Swans, and it is a very noisy ambient landscape, I couldn't really get behind it for now, but I know there are times and moods that are more suitable occasions. Even if I didn't particularly liked this one, I can understand what makes it interesting and I'm confident I'll return to it someday and like it more, thanks borzoi!

I also started with the individual picks, first album here was Public Strain by Women and I loved it! Fantastic vocals and the whole mood was so melancholic and cold. And I thought the noise bits really added something to that atmosphere!

Time for one or two more today ^^

That album with the Kennedy assassination cover is actually kinda nice, I like the cover of These Boots Are Made For Walkin'.
>>
>>73235638
would say better if they weren't all sluts.
>>
>>73235650
lol idc dude u may be jokin but i can take mean comments on the interwebs. i agree the boots cover is the best
you got me thinking: don't u hate when people describe an album as "not for everyone"? like what are you apart of some exclusive club just bc you understand/like an album no all music is for everyone people can just have different opinions on it.
i just think it's so pretentious to say that about an album
>>
>>73235735
I think with "not for everyone" people mean that you might need to hear music in similar styles first to appreciate it

or something
>>
>>73235695
bears are bad but sluts are good so im not seeing what ur getting at rn
>>
>>73235784
ok, but in my mind, why not explain why you like an album to help someone understand it? like if someone doesnt get/like it or yr writing a review for an album, i think saying its "not for everyone" just makes it so secretive. its like yr hogging the album, rather than sharing yr love for it, u know what i mean?
>>
>>73234957
Holy fug I ripped that from my university library once, like ten years ago... think I've lost the files since then. Where did you access it?
>>
>>73235886
i really only wanna fuck people i know on some level. that's why i'm into rule 34. there's automatic context to what i'm seeing. not my thing.
>>
>>73235898
Yeah I get it, because it really IS for everyone just that some people may need to put down some extra work to like it
Just saying it's a difficult album would be enough probably

>>73235907
I'm 100% slut and disagree with you completely

"Not for everyone" is fair I think, but sometimes it's understood as the kinda thing Hampus got a couple of aneurysms over when people suggested that you need to listen to this or that before you get to appreciate the real *advanced* stuff (like >>73235784, would you look at that) and that is pretty dumb. Sure, people can have different opinions as you say and some kinds of music have broader appeal than others. I like some p ass stuff for reasons I wouldn't expect most people to be able to sympathise with no matter what. I could explain but that doesn't make it more appealing to people, it's just exposing it to people to whom it already appeals to. Niche stuff like that is literally not for everyone. It's for idiots.

Folk and Pop Music of Myanmar Vol. 3: Music of Nat Pwe (Sublime Frequencies, 2003)

I relistened this after a mention earlier, and yes I agree, it’s different from other Myamnar traditional musics. It’s a lot more rhythmically strict and sparse, relying more on repetition of shorter rhythmic passages. Similarly, with the melodies, it utilizes shorter phrases more than other Myanmar music I’ve heard. This is perhaps closer to what one would expect from popular musics, but it is without a doubt rooted in ceremonial tradition and uses entirely traditional instrumentation, with some minor studio trickery like reverb seemingly added for effect (although too could be natural, depending on the environment in which it is recorded).
I think anyone who liked this would also like the Sumatran entries of the same record series (Folk and Pop Music/Sounds of), and vice versa. They are superficially rather similar at points. A very good record, I would recommend it.
>>
>>73235735
for me when i say not for everyone i usually mean "this caters to my specific taste more than overarching quality"

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>believing in overarching quality in music
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>music is objective
>>>>>>>>LOL
>>
>>73236000
nice digits and those are some good points. i agree you dont need to be well rooted in other genres before you listen to an album, you should just go right into it.
i guess i just dont like how it makes the album sound exclusive. i like some pretty ass stuff as well but im still gonna shill it lol
>>
>>73236173
maybe quality was the wrong word
"appeal" is probably better
>>
>>73236279
So 4/4 with bass on 1 and 3, snare on 2 and 4, simple repeated four chord progression, basic melodies that are repeated for 2-3 verse-chorus segments, maybe with a bridge segment thrown in somewhere, intro and outro bookending the whole thing. Lyrics with repeated power words, particularly in the chorus, which does not change at all between verses. All performed in a studio by a pretty face front figure backed by a big name producer, financed by a rich white man at the head of a larger record company.

Or what are you talking about?
>>
>>73236279
eh make that "current state of critical narrative within this or that community"
>>
>>73236230
I don't think saying an album "isn't for everyone" does not necessarily mean they are being pretentious. More likely they are being prematurely defensive about the album. I'd personally phrase it different. There are a few albums I love that I would rarely rec to people because I feel as though they cater directly to my taste.
>>
>>73236369
Better, now you just sound like a colossal twat.

There's really never any place to say "I like this but I don't think others will", because you have no fucking idea what other people will or won't like. Just describe the damn record and if someone thinks it sounds appealing, they can listen to it for themselves.
>>
>>73236412

maybe it's more appropriate as an expression of experience i.e. i've recommended this record to people and they largely do not seem to enjoy it and from this i can make the vague statement that the record is "not for everyone"
i guess really you can't ever say anything about other people's opinions but that's really sort of a basic "don't generalize" rule

Damian and the Criterions - Avant Garde (1982)
>Synth-pop, Outsider Music
At times it’s like a complete amateur tried to make an 80s big budget-sounding stadium-filling record and didn’t even notice that it came out totally fucked. At times it’s like an alien tries to recreate rockabilly or disco or something idk. It’s really hard to imagine what Damian was going for here. It mangles a lot of the tropes of cheesy, 80s synth-lead music (complete with some weird concept album-like skit tracks [“Witches Brew”]) with some dance elements, and comes up with something really wacky and strangely compelling. It’s not unlike a zany, maximalist Suicide.

Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You
The first couple of songs on this album led me to believe I was just listening to Fugazi with synths in the back, but around halfway through disc 1 of Leaves Turn Inside You with the cut “Terminus,” Unwound began to make some interesting advances. The synths in this album aren’t that important to the big picture, every song on this album is catchy enough, and each one tries some unique trait, sometimes in the composition of the song or sometimes with the production of it. Songs like “Scarlette” present some of the more interesting ideas on the album, with raspy whispered vocals and phasers all over. In general, much of the music on this album is very layered, I recall hearing some hand drumming, reversed delay here and there, some strings, and piano came out on the second disc. The best tracks on here were the longer ones. “Radio Gra,” “Terminus,” and “Below the salt,” are the standout tracks.
Decent 3.5, probably going to listen to this again, may go up to a 4

S W A N S A R E D E A D
This is one of those live albums that rivals the studio material in quality. I think the version of “I Crawled” presented on this album is better than the original studio one from the Young God EP. Not gonna lie I jumped a bit when Gira screamed at the end of disc 1. Jarboe’s singing isn’t that great but Gira brings his A game on this album.
Strong 4 to a decent 4.5 on this one

Letov wins!
I guess I'll do a drone chart on him now or some such.

In Utero is secured. I gave Entertainment a second listen to be sure, but yeah, In Utero narrowly makes it. The sparse sound on Entertainment gets tiresome for me over a full album, I guess I prefer the bombast of Nirvana's brand of punk. Plus Nirvana gives /daily/ a shout out on the last track.

>Ur not a psych guy tho, are you?
I go through phases, I'm not really interested in rock right now but it was my fav genre at one point.
The album is overrated because of the 'freeform freak outs' which are essentially 200 people in a studio making various noises with no coordination. Once you realize it's just last-minute filler for a few admittedly pretty good psych songs the album loses it's charm. It's good but certainly doesn't deserve to be above a 7 imo.
Everything else there is an 8-9 (except xiu xiu which I haven't heard).
