I don't think so.

>>73133570
I haven't read a lot of "classics" since high school because I'm a philistine like that. I've read Shakespear, Dante, Homer, Plato and Sophocles kinda recently, only very little of some of them. A Journey Round My Skull by Karinthy Frigyes and The Door by Szabó Magda are both Hungarian not-so-modern classics in a sense and they both have supposedly good English translations. Catch-22 maybe, I love that book but I don't know if it's considered a classic at all. Maldoror I'm pretty sure is not a classic but I gotta plug it.
That's the problem, besides the most obvious picks I'm having a hard time thinking of anything because "classic literature" isn't really a thing (classical literature is, but it's a different thing). I suppose you're asking because you've been reading Milton, so I'd recommend looking at the literature of the late English Renaissance and the Restoration, or just the Renaissance in general. I don't know much about these periods.

>rhucle - yellow beach
lovely, emotional ambient with atmospheric field recordings. the textures are sparse and warm, and they evoke a new type of nostalgia for me, one more nature-oriented than anything else. great.
>steffen basho-junghans - in the morning twilight
this really reminds me of james blackshaw's stuff, except it's far more technical and studied, while retaining that same emotional edge. some astounding moments here - most tracks come to a feverish head of joyous, tumbling sound. love it.

>>
>>73134861
Better, I would say, although it comes down to your tastes in the end. This one's got a richer sound, more instrumentation going on, well-produced and all, I can imagine some would be more into the sparser and more lo-fi sound of The Magic Bridge though (an album I also really like). I think Dawson's songwriting is really peaking on this one, though.

essential daily.jpg
3MB, 4231x6355px
Oookay! I figured "daily" is neither obligation nor limitation, so I heard two albums from the essentials today, these I got recommended to start with.
First Eureka by Jim O'Rourke, which I really liked. Some laid-back singer-songwriter style with pretty lyrics and vocals reminding me of Simon and Garfunkel in parts.
It sets all kind of moods and delivers emotion at all time, wonderful, I can see why you all like this.
But I expected something else from the cover haha

The second one was Jorge Ben. I kinda have a problem with music in languages I don't understand, it creates such a distance, I can't relate to it and I constantly feel like i'm missing something important out. So i tried to focus more on the sounds and rythms but I couldn't find much I like there, sorry :(
How do I overcome that?

And any suggestions what to hear next?
I only know I should wait with the Fishmans
>>
>>73137054
definitely Musical Abortions next
>>

>>
>>73137092
ok! looks like black metal, I'm very new to that
>>73137098
yesss, i'm trying, but then i get the feeling i miss an important part of the music
it's dumb i know
>>
>>73137250
>an important part of the music
lyrical meaning is not music
>>
>>73137054
I think you're putting too much value in lyrics there, don't let something as superficial as a language barrier get in the way of your enjoyment, it'll become an issue if you're trying to widen your musical horizons. You can always look up the translated lyrics if you want, but the vocal delivery, the emotion, is more important.

Additionally, take Loveless or any shoegaze album for that matter. The lyrics are in English but I can barely make them out. Doesn't hinder my enjoyment and it shouldn't. The melody is more important, not the words.
>>
>>73137237
i know this sounds dumb, but yes, I can't relate to joyful music most of the times
>>73137269
hmm yes, i should have said "work of art" or something then, i don't know
>>
>>73137288
but that's exactly what I mean

the meaning of words said in music is an amusical quality. You're not alone in thinking that lyirical meaning is an important musical quality.

It's something really important to get past. You can use poetry in music but music isn't just poetry + sound.

very great
>>
>>73137394
maybe it's an amusical quality, but it's part of the album, no? so for me it makes sense to include these in the rating when i rate the album,
hmm or not, i don't take stuff like artwork into account either... this is confusing
but you are right, i should learn to get past it to enjoy albums like these more
>>73137280
oh the loveless comparison is good, i got alot out of that when i heard it even without understanding much, somehow i saw the vocals more as instrument and mood setter there

I will try to focus more on delivery or more important less on the actual lyrics the next time i listen to a foreign album!
/daily/ is already helpful, i'm glad i came here ^^

>>
>>73137054
>I only know I should wait with the Fishmans

>>
>>73137054
Do Escape from Noise next.

About the lyrics thing, start listening to genres that obscure the vocals like shoegaze and some types of extreme metal. You will soon forget the lyrics have meaning and focus more on delivery and emotion.
>>
>>73137503
The Replica comparison is kind of a meme, but it convinced me to listen to the album so I included it. Glad you liked it.

The Paragons - On the Beach (1967)
>rocksteady

I think “precious” is the best word to describe this album, because it basically exists in a parallel world where absolutely nothing bad happens and the worldly pasttime is to go to the beach and have some excellent fun. Any criticisms I could levy against this album are strictly based on my personal taste: it’s too light, not bassy enough, and the vocal group setup along with the sunniness of the album can be a bit overbearingly cheesy. When I take off my asshole goggles, this is an incredibly fun, incredibly chill, and most importantly, an incredibly summery album.

Hey guys! I'm back and doing a chart for my current psych and late 60s addiction

most of these I heard before the chart but I'll give some quick reviews to get up to speed and if they're starred that means I've heard em before and not relistening for the chart

*Pet Sounds: lovely music, you can hear the passion
Smile: some really interesting production and sounds here, but a bit cheesey and at times forgettable or dragging out
Forever Changes: such sweet music
Piper: Jesus they were weird and experimental back then. Imagine later floyd like this damn...
sgt pepper: classic I guess, some songs are kinda weak and it doesn't really flow (thx for the transition on 1 and 2) also Hey Rita is underrated
*Odessey&Oracle: one of those albums that has no weak track, lovely album, but nothing goes above and beyond to make it a 10
Experienced: Great sound but some of the songs on this are kind of a bore
The Doors: used to be a 4/10, some good but nothing goes crazy good and a lot sounds the same
*White Noise: fucking INSANE
Would You Believe: pet sounds made by the small faces
The Millennium - Begin
I think I'm inevitably going to bump this up. tons of perfect songs I just need to familiarize myself with. its like umami in psych pop form.
United States of America: great album, super cool stuff, but if it didnt have Wooden Wife it'd be a 10 like jesus christ that songs a zero its even got a thinly veiled political method and terrible lyrics. "AND A YORKSHIRE TERRIER TOO, SUGAR"
Village Green: the first time I listened to this I was anticipating a bad song to finally come, and one never did. Now The Kinks are one of my favourites.

I'm really excited to get to work on this chart, so if anyone sees anything they think I should jump ahead to, rec ahead! Also, I'm relistening to Surrealistic Pillow and Silver Apples for this (hohoho I sure cant wait for silver apples fuck that GARBAGE album)

Various Artists - Goodbye, Babylon (2003)
>gospel

I’ve said many times over that, as a non-religious person, the gospel music of yore makes me want to become a Christian. It’s the most sincere music on the planet, pure, unfettered depictions of love and devotion played simply with no pretention to be found. Goodbye, Babylon, a monolithic, nearly eight-hour long compilation, complies some of the best gospel music ever produced. Strictly looking at it as a compilation already earns it incredibly high marks. It flows wonderfully, the selections are incredibly obscure, and the restorations are beautiful, Dust-to-Digital really earns their name. It’s probably the most impressive various artists compilation I’ve ever seen, the sheer breadth of music it gets together in one place is incredibly impressive and a perfect representation of gospel and religious music as a whole, and while I don’t own a physical copy, the packaging is definitely quite beautiful. Musically, it’s of course absolutely stunning. Some selections I know, like tracks by Washington Phillips, Blind Willie Johnson, The Carter Family, and Mahalia Jackson, but the vast majority of this was completely unknown to me. Listening to this is like opening up a whole new world of music, even though I already consider myself to be a big gospel fan. From the opening track the mood is completely set, and the quality and passion in the music rarely falters throughout the compilation’s eight hours. The last disc is a little underwhelming, especially compared to the first five, but it’s still got highlights, and considering it’s the smallest weak link in an otherwise perfect chain, I can’t complain too much.

I think this is the 2nd or 3rd time hearing this.. and I guess I still don't get it? Like it was comfy and had a cool sleepy atmosphere, but really none of the tracks stood out as being great to me. Not necessarily boring, I guess, but definitely not captivating by any means.

>Alva Noto - Xerrox Vol.2
>Glitch, Drone, Noise

Instead of a jittery welcome like Vol.1, the opening track gets throws you right into its auditory sea, rivaling Tim Hecker in its robotic warmth and crunchy texture. It's less sporadic with its sound, and skips the 30 second transition tracks from Vol.1. Samples from Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O)))), Michael Nyman, and Ryuichi Sakamoto are used and manipulated here, seemingly erasing the disconnection of machine and reality.

It's reassuring to hear that, with the second track, Alva Noto isn't planning on converting whatever his bit-crushing machine into listenable harmonies isn't his only plan. This album has points of noise that will switch your focus on and off.

Because of the aforementioned samples, this album leans towards the cinematic style that music today commonly uses, while still sounding like you're watching a monolithic electronic construct shift to and fro.

I'm left to question where Vol.3 will travel next.

7/10

>The Pop Group - Y
>Post Punk, Experimental Rock

>person complaining that this is unlistenable
>Grimes, Lana Del Ray, Bon Iver's For Emma in their 10/10's
pottery

This was actually pretty fun. The wackiness of someone like Zappa, channeled into some industrial world, where "savages" exist outside of city limits. Rock beats, punk vocals, jazz instruments, and a dubby guitar all in one escapade away from how punk SHOULD be? Sure thing.

This does make me ponder how Minutemen stood with their album, half a decade after this. There really is a diverse range of punk music-- primal rage, cynical wit, and manic verses all come from different albums at different periods of time.

Fav tracks: We Are Time, Thief of Fire

>Forest Swords - Engravings
>Ambient Dub, Downtempo

Was a little turned off by how dreary the first track was, but Thor's Stone is the kind of track that propels its listener into an ancient and fantastical world.

Knowing that Forest Swords has tinnitus, the same reluctance for greater sounds, like on Peter Silbermann's Impermanence, takes a subdued presence on this album. Rather than relying solely on silence, this album takes a myriad of colorful foreign samples, and puts it all through the same, gritty filter.

Following Irby Tremor, Onward is a slow and boring slog. The Weight of Gold climbs out of the mud with the help of An Hour; Anneka's Battle pierces a veil with the clearest vocals this has to offer. Gathering manages to be come hypnotic with chopped chanting, and plays to Forest Sword's strengths the most.

I think the usage of electric guitars is what keeps dragging back the listener from the clear atmosphere it has going for it. All they do is remind me that I'm just sitting at a desk when listening to this-- If I wanted pretty guitars, I'd listen to Mark McGuire.

An interesting listen, if a bit off-colour.

6/10

>Slowdive - Soulvaki
>Shoegaze

Was alright. Didn't make me think too much, which is good in its own way. Nothing that really reached out at me.

Except for Neil Halstead's shit-eating grin on the cover art. By far the best part about this album. Besides that, I'll revisit this.

>Christina Vantzou - No2
>Modern Classical + Ambience

With Stars of the Lid producer Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzi and a 15-piece ensemble, Vantzou uses her ingredients just as one would imagine; simple, somber, modern compositions. There is much more movement to these works than something like A Winged Victory for the Sullen, which many would find more enjoyable. Vantzou puts her group of 15 players to as much work as she can, not interested in sticking to a minimalist approach.

The title No2 has a second meaning, besides being Vantzou's sophomore album. All of these tracks sound like the 2nd movement for contemporary classical works. Not a bad thing for me, but if you aren't in to sad movie soundtracks, maybe steer clear of this.

7/10
>Jaga Jazzist - What We Must
>Post Rock, Nu Jazz

A Norwegian group of ten musicians, led by Lars Horntveth. The results are hard to put into words, hearing the huge collision of so many instruments on this album. Woodwinds and brass, synth textures and piano, guitars and string sections, percussion and vocals make this an extremely busy collection of music, with so much to listen to.

The melodies are more comparable to a shoegaze group, though the song structures play out progressively from 4 to 8 minutes in length. The first two tracks are the biggest on the album-- following the third, the jazzier side of this group comes through with some chilly grooves.

Note: If you didn't like Lars Horntventh - Kaleidoscopic, then you probably won't like this either.

>DJ Rashad - Double Cup
>Footwork

Jlin puts this to shame in terms of production, but Rashad is better off in composing smoother, easy to groove to tunes. Even though I'd say the usage of vocal samples here are even MORE irritating than Jlin, which says something. It's already bad when I hear it in other hip hop songs, but I can only take so much of some woman singing BABY BABY BABY.

The repeating note on I Don't Give a Fuck is godawful, the features are generic and could have been samples from anywhere, the closer track is embarassing, the pitch manipulation on the samples gets predictable, and when there IS lyrics, they aren't anything interesting for 2013.

On the other hand, the title track is great, Reggie is stupidly fun (even if it doesn't go anywhere), and the B-Side has some of the better features.

I'm glad this album was the first to kickstart footwork. It can only get better from here.

4/10

>Liturgy - Aesthetica

As heavy as this album's meme potency is, I actually enjoyed it. The opener is kickass when it breaks through, and the a capella on True Will has been stuck in my head for some time now. From there, the album simply won't let up, all for the better.

The claims about their composition being garbage could be true. They like to get stuck on single chords and measures, Reich without any subtlety, and the technical skill that's easier to hear on something like Slam metal isn't as obvious. Communication is present, yet it feels wasted by the direction the music takes.

However.

I could listen to the vocals all day. The drums feel REAL, and are the centerpiece of tracks at times. Their sound is /uplifting/-- absolutely contradictory for black metal-- but hot damn does it make their guitars glisten. The 2 guitars and bass don't stand on their own through solos, but in unison they form a fantastic layer of sound that can be used over and over to coat the adamant drums.

just fuck my non-existent reputation up

My laptop crashed while I was writing reviews. I had about 25 done and I may come back and do very small reviews for the few I was very passionate about or upon specific request. Idk I've been losing passion for /daily/ lately and I imagine I might quit after I go back home. I'll be around every once and a while but I won't be taking the name literally. It's been real <3 but I hope to finish this chart first.

What next?

btw the OS Runescape album ain't happening. Not abouta do a 26-hour album. Also, one of the Pafe albums doesn't exist online so I ordered the vinyl from buyee. I'll see what I can do about ripping it.

Oh I for sure won't LEAVE really, but I probably just won't use it as often. Once or twice a week maybe I'll come back with a review or something.

It's been a good couple years here! Thanks to everyone for helping expand my knowledge of my favorite art form, and overall just being very cool and knowledgeable! I really appreciate it :)

you didn't like the runescape OST? but muh nostalgia.

MUUM BREENG MORE TENDIES
>>
>>73148065
I love the RS album, and I reviewed several albums that were 3+ hours (the Django Reinhardt one being 6 1/2 iirc) but while the OSRS OST is amazing, it's literally more than a day long.

See >>73144632

Plus, the soundtrack you can find in its complete form online is just MIDI covers, not the actual soundtrack usually.

Here's the OST you can find everywhere:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyKj4gJ_Sl0

Here's how it SHOULD sound:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvEeGQSwNX4

Huge difference, right?

I'm not gonna waste 26 hours on a terrible bootleg.

interesting, why don't they just publish that shit? it would be a major seller, at least some free spotify bucks.

jagex is really protective of their shit I guess, also the OST is INSANELY long. I agree though, at least putting the most popular tracks on Spotify would generate so much revenue.

>I really should start to do /daily/. I work completely remotely so it's feasible. Some days I'm in the mood to listen to the same shit over and over again though.
Absolutely! Not everyone here (I'd say like half maybe) actually listens to an album a day. I'd say give it a shot, and if you don't like it or don't feel like it, no one's holding a gun to your head or anything.

>>73148223
Right? I expected to dig it, but async to me just felt like a collection of really nice, pleasant sounds rather than anything that was full enough to really satisfy me. I just didn't dig how empty and untextured it could be at times. I dig the shit out of Sakamoto's work, but this wasn't something I was huge on.

>/f - the fourth bully
this is one of the most inconsistent albums i've heard - some of it is competently composed and beautiful, while other parts just seem like aimless wank. the textures and sounds are remarkably diverse, but to me it sounds like they're directionless half the time. really, i think i need to give this more attention for the more abstract ideas to really catch.
>gato - the third world
it sounds like a Pharoah Sanders album, but not as... potent, i guess? i'm not sure - it's still very enjoyable and has great musicianship throughout, but i don't feel myself as engaged by a lot of the passages. still good though.

An interesting & unfocused listen. Moments of cool stuff, but very little was fleshed out. Mostly a mess of half-ideas & passion.

6~ some moments worthy of 7 (Boedha, for example), but they were too rare.

I Would Set Myself On Fire For You - Believes In Patterns (2006)
>Screamo, Post-Hardcore

IWSMOFFY is a pretty unique band, and I have listened to them before a couple of times but nothing has ever stuck (last time was maybe two years ago or so). This album is really good, a mix of screamo, post-hardcore, and post-rock, and besides using the normal setup for a screamo band they also employ strings and brass. The songs build up very good, and the composition overall is extremely well done and you can really hear that they are talented musicians.
The faults I can think of though is mostly that I wish they would let loose a bit more. Some tracks such as "Twelve" really explode when every member is giving it all they have, but some tracks like "Nine" just kinda feels like it drags on and never REALLY reaches the explosiveness they can achieve. Still very good.

(and seriously, Eight might be one of my favorite tracks of all time right now. It's ridiculously good)

3.5/5
yamir:
清水靖晃 - Kakashi (1982)
>Art-Pop

Oh boy, youtube recommended - core!
I've seen this album around a lot but have never actually given it a chance. And it's......... pretty good. Most of the album isn't really that special and nothing really caught my attention. Afterwards I barely remember anything from the album but I know it was pretty good when I listened to it.

EXCEPT FOR the last track, 美しき天然. This song is so incredibly good that it seriously pulls the entire album up. Without it I would probably rate the album 2/2.5 but this track is just so dark, heavy, and mysterious that it's right in my taste. The bassline is amazing. If you don't plan on listening to the album, atleast listen to this track, it's great stuff.

3/5

Thanks for playing yamir <3

>lousine zakarian - armenian medieval spiritual music
it's church music, something i largely don't care for in the first place, but it's especially beautiful here; the vocalist is immensely talented, and the melodies are about as compelling as hymns can be. there are some interesting incorporations of strings, and the organ sounds quite lovely, but overall, i wouldn't call this "great."
