is the behringer c1 a good option for a mic? i'm trying to get a cheap set and that's one of the cheapest mics i can find
>>
>>73119234
it makes more sense to go used if you're looking that cheap imo. sm57 is usually a safe bet. What are you recording?
>>
>>73119292
i dunno what genre exactly yet
you're talking of a shure sm57 right?
>>
>>73119315
i mean vocals, just guitar, hitting random things?

sm57 doesn't usually pair well with cheaper interfaces so far as i can tell. not terrible but still. i spotted an e609 used on guitar center for 70 bucks- solid mic.
>>
>>73119390
maaaaybe hitting my dick againts things but mostly vocals, cause i can just record my guitar directly from my computer
>>
https://clyp.it/2s5k0cdx

finna post this again cos no one gave feedback last time.
>>
>>73119446
I think either will suit you fine for vocals and dick samples. the e609 is brighter and doesn't need as much gain.

>>73119458
uhhh are you asking about something specific?

I thought I replied to you but I guess I didn't know what to say...
>>
Sanity check on this mix and master? <.<
I think it's good to go but I haven't had any experienced ears on it yet.

https://clyp.it/id1h0xxx?token=190977cf7660757b9a6af66500b4a47d
>>
>>73119500
I guess that's good. Just wanna know if you think it's a good track both musically but mix/master wise too. Does it sound professional?

>>73119542
High end is way too much, you have to tame that. Lots of painful freqs on that main noisy synth, look on a spectrum and take those down or alternatively use a multiband compressor.
Bring them overall down and give some more volume to the drums, they have to be at the forefront of this I think. Pretty cool and unique track tho I like it.
>>
>>73119579
hmmm, the brightness was intentional but i'll reconsider that. What are you monitoring on? The only person who's heard it didn't bring that up and they're pretty tame when it comes to music.

The kick and rimshot delay thing sound somewhat "stock" if you get what I mean. That was the only part that kind of pales in comparison to the rest of the track.

what are some good vsts for cubase, specifically orchestral, 8bit, or moog synths

I'm listening on speakers, I still think you need to ease up on the treble a tad.

And thanks for your feedback.

>>73119797
>Orchestral: Kontakt Libraries, so many of them.
>8bit: You can make 8bit in any synth really, get Sylenth1.

It's alright tho a bit dated. It's really good how it's an all-in-the-box library but if you have more patience to "get" separate libraries for everything it's gonna sound better. LASS for strings, CineBrass for brass, Berlin Woodwinds for Winds are must haves.
>>
https://clyp.it/x2aqerem

Honestly how much of a mess does this sound like? I'm having that problem where it sounds OK while I'm working on it, but when I come back to listen after a few hours it's almost unlistenable

yo prod, I'm mixing and mastering a mixtape for my friend. He's just ripped the beats from the internet and recorded verses over them. I told him that the beat quality will stop it from sounding really good, but I'm prepared to give it a go.
So far I've MB compressed the beats to tame any ugly high end that comes from the mp3 beats, mixed his vocals and cut a tiny bit of his frequency range from the mp3s, so there's room for his vocals. I've also gone to the trouble to add better kicks to the beats and also added side chain compresh to give a bit more clarity to the mix as a whole. I feel like I'm ready to give it a master chain now. My question is, have I done too much to the original mp3 beats? I'm afraid it would probably sound better if I leave them alone and just try to make them gel with the vocals rather than the MB and side chaining I've put on them. Guess I just gotta render two versions and A/B them. Any suggestions? Experience working with mixing shitty quality beats with no stems?
>>
>>73126282
Been there

Did they sound like shit already or what..? Without hearing an example it sounds like you've done too much- if he's were talking about pro tracks the most you should need to do is carve out a bit for the vocals if it really needs it

Just face it, you'll never be famous.

You aren't special, no matter what your mommy tells you when you finish showing her ur shitty track and she has to lie to stop you from killing yourself.

You will never be a rockstar, you will never pioneer into new genres, you will never get the cars, the money, the women, or the attention.

You will never have young girls getting wet when they are in your mere presence.

But it's not like you had a chance to begin with? Martin Garrix went to an elite school of musicianship and has been producing for over 10 years, and he's only 20. At 18 he was touring the world, fucking bitches and getting money for producing child's play, whilst you fail to produce a musically coherent 4 bar loop.

There are 1000's of producers like this, child prodigies just itching for a chance to show off their amazing work, and you honestly think you stood a chance? No, you don't even have the intellect required to be a producer, so even if you "grind"(cringe) you will get no where and will never finish anything.

By all means, keep feeding money to Native instruments and cymatics, but keep in mind your going to have to work 9-5 for the rest of your life, and probably put in a few extra hours a week to pay back your debts.

>inb4 Martin Garrix is bad.
No, as he gets more pussy than you and i'd prefer to listen to his shit over anything you have the courage to upload and call "music")

>inb4 "I just do it 4 fun xD"
You don't, stop lying to yourself. You secretly want to prove everyone wrong, but think people can't see through your facade.

>>73126282
Sometimes I have to mix things for people with only a stereo instrumental and then the vocals. My usual process involves this: ~2-3dB multiband compression in the main frequency range of the vocals (which are sidechained). The MB is set to mid/side mode, and is set to around 75-80% mid, so that it's just scooping out of the middle channel to make room for the vocals. Then I use a plugin called Track Spacer, which is pretty much a dynamic EQ, to side chain the vocals to it. I have set in a similar way to the MB. It has a frequency range option, and I usually have the range set to 200hz up to 3500hz. That usually clears up room for the vocals pretty well.

K so i made and setup a synth, how do i add notes to the track?
>>
>>73142990

You need to create a MIDI part in the arrangement window (the section with the 1,3,5,7,9 numerals at the top) that contains your note data - you either do this by recording some MIDI with a MIDI keyboard, or by manually creating a MIDI part then manually adding the notes to it.

To do the manual step, use the pencil tool to draw a MIDI part in the arrangement window, then choose the arrow tool again and double-click the newly-created MIDI part to enter edit mode - in edit mode use the pencil tool to draw your MIDI notes.
>>
Is it bad that I still use lmms? It's what I started with and I'm too stubborn to move away
>>
>>73143281

Oh, meant to add - keyboard shortcuts:

Ctrl+E - Edit mode

To exit edit mode and keep your changes press the RETURN key (not the ENTER key on the number pad - that key functions as a Play key)

To exit edit mode and cancel your changes press the ESCAPE key

As mentioned, ENTER on your number pad starts play, the 0 key stops it, the 3 key returns the "play head" to the start of the song, and the 1 and 2 keys set the play head to the left and right locators.

meh, it has a good song structure and is mixed and mastered decently, but does it set itself apart from all the other future bass garbage?

it's basically the same cringe tier major sevenths, vocal chops(which is lorde... seriously?) Lack-luster chord progression, generic sound palette, bare basic sound design, very little percussion, nothing that makes me go WOW.

why does everyone that say that they're inspired by flume only draw from his 2013-2015 releases? His first album was so much better, and skin even had a great deal of experimentation for an artist whom's main crowdbase don't even listen to experimental electronic music.

Anyways, back to your track, it would be better if you had an actual vocalist sing on it.

>>73143725
>His production is only programming.

Like any other primary electronic artist? lol. Wasn't the whole appeal of Flume and "wonky" because of the off-kilter beats? Something which is very un-formulaic

Who would you describe as "next-level". Don't say Arca because we all know his tracks are just a clusterfuck of sounds with him whining over the top.

how do I know what genre I should make? I don't know whether to focus on jazz, folk, rap, gospel/soully stuff, or something else. those are all genres that interest me, but I obviously can't do them all.

nono, you don't fuse genres, you just take from each what you like, it comes naturally

just try make a track without any limits and youll see you will be doing some weird shit that sounds like many things you like merged together

also rap drums with folk melodies go very well

>tl;dr how long do I have to try at something before I should give up and try another genre

Probably until you stop enjoying it or it doesn't inspire you anymore.
Also who cares if you are still shit at it in five years time? I've been /prod/ing for about 20 years and im unsigned, unpaid, no live shows and no releases...so I guess that makes me really shit.
I have friends that play football every week they've been doing that for way longer than I've been making music, they don't even play for a club let alone being pro footballers, it's fucking jokes how shit they are!

Hey thanks for the feedback, glad the mix is good in your ears and I've been trying to teach myself mastering I thought I was struggling but I guess I'm doing alright, thanks anon! Yea I agree it's nothing too far out of the mainstream genre spec but I'm pretty happy for finally finishing a project. Out of all the people I've shown you're the first one to guess correct about the lorde vocal chops haha. Just curious about why you don't like lorde or the chops? I wouldn't mind having someone sing on the track but I feel there's not much room for actual vocals or verses and whatnot. Thanks for the feed back though anon. (:
>>
Lol, I enjoy so many rough sketches I compose, but when I get deeper into the project, it loses all the appeal. And so it goes again and again.

The worst possible combination.
>>
>>73154139
Are you adding a bunch of different musical ideas or are you taking the bits from the initial sketch that you liked and changing them slightly for some variation here and there?

Watch this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUdyc8j8eLc

It's about taking a short musical idea and turning it into a full song, using Dark Souls' final boss music as the example.

There are 4 tracks in this clip, all the piano chords are major 7ths, thus making it a chromatic progression, the bassline follows a chromatic progression as well, the mallets and the lead are in the key of G major. Does this harmony work at all? I'm having a hard time trying to figure it out.

i realize that but i thought i pulled off the harmonic layering and rythmic variations enough to allow myself to use the melody lines more like little gimmicks, i don't want it to be driven by a concise melody, i want the textural evolution to be the main focus, supported by the drums, and the melodies just to serve as background and fillers

good job man, have some feedback:
i think the intro is too long and when you start playing with the kick pattern at the beginning it kinds of kills the flow, also needs more skipping imo

the whole track sounds very washed up to me, needs to be more in your face, i know its vaporwave and supposed to sound washed up but you went too overboard with it, like listen to sth like fuji grid tv prism genesis, its washed up but at the same time it doesnt sound too reverbed

overall its a good start, i really liked the vocal sound, at 4:18 the voice kind of resonates and reaches a level that i think the whole track should have

or if you really want it to sound that far back add some cassette tier hiss maybe?

>>
>>73159650

>>
>>73163053
just look for a sample of it online

there's even some vsts that replicate it, that make audio tracks sound like they are being played in different media with the corresponding characteristic noises and textures, but it would be easier to sample it and add it

also try this (could end up sounding liek shit, but maybe not, sometimes its good): gate another instance of the hiss with a synth or the drums or the voice, or whatevever, then see if you have a reverse-gate function, that way you can give the hiss some life, and if there's reverse-gate then there's yet more life cause it has a pattern of its own

maybe make it go through a bit of vocoder too, like the amount sometimes used for hats, no more, just to add some extra mess to it

Partially, the subject (the first melody) was recorded with a MIDI keyboard, but the rest was programmed in with the mouse. I'm not a very good pianist so fail to play in 4 part polyphony.
I often work with the 'snap' off and just carefully place notes with the mouse in order to get some humanity in the music - if everything is snapped to the grid it can sound too robotic.

Vintage Samplers (Kontakt)

Fairlight II and Emu samples (WAV) with Kontakt instruments. Shakuhachi, strings, choir, drum kit, etc. Get that 80s sound.

If you don't have Kontakt (???) but have FL Studio, DirectWave will import them fine except you'll need to get rid of the LFO to Pitch modulation and might need to fix the gain and velocity.

Should I just sell all my hardware synths? For the past 17 or so years I have been fancying myself with a bit of synth hobby. I had some aspirations early on, that I would actually make something, but between making various excuses for not getting it done, I have yet to complete one cohesive track.

I bought piles of magazines and books, some never have been cracked open. "One day... One day..." I told myself, as I left most of my hardware disconnected, magazines unread, books as new as day I bought them. Yet, I am still not sure how modulation works, still fuzzy about FM, still not far from n00b that I was when I first started hoarding synths and paraphernalia. The only fruit - 1 semi-coherent track completed for personal consumption. Of note, it was made with 90% software and with a DAW I am yet to master.

I was very GASy over these years and hoarded up some synths. Since I'm not a great player by any stretch of imagination, lack of MIDI in some of my vintage synths has kept me from getting more use out of them. Meanwhile, my circumstances dictate that I raise some much needed cash and while I'm not yet squeezed to the point where I don't have a choice, I am considering selling off most of my synths.

They sit in my "studio" as a reminder of how much time and $$$ I sunk into this hobby, with not much to show for it. I am about to divorce and between having to focus my time on other single dad activities and needing to re-tool my work skills to remain employable, I doubt I will have the time and substantial enough reason to justify my keeping this collection for foreseeable future.

As I mentioned, I am considering selling off most of my gear, including JP-8, Elka Synthex, JD-800. I am keeping for now Virus, Juno 106, Akai AX-80, Matrix 1000, and Oasys.

Sell it all you'll make good money. If you decide you wanna get back into /prod/ing software has you more than covered.
>>
>>73180715
your problem is every time you sit to do music you expect to end up with a full fledged track, making music is 90% fooling around with the instruments and learning to extend your body into them

plug a synth and put a record you like, play over it

thanks a lot, will do man, still trying to be happy with the arrangement

one more question, do you think its structurally coherent?

You want something like Steinberg wavelab a real dedicated audio editor...although you could probably do what you need inside most daws I'd recommend a dedicated audio editor especially if you are new to this sort of thing.

I bought komplete 10 Ultimate a couple of years ago when it was on sale at 50% off plus I'd already bought Maschine so got a discount from upgrading from komplete select which comes with Maschine. Without a doubt it's the best money I've spent on software it was worth the price alone for just the softube effects and Reaktor.

This post makes me feel sad. I hope you find some inspiration and decide against selling all that stuff. I've been /prod/ding for about 20 years now and even though I have low points I really enjoy chilling in the "Studio" now.
Maybe you should sit down with just 2 or 3 bits of gear and only use those for a while, get to know them a bit better and things might start falling into place. I've recently done exactly that and learnt a sampler I've had for 20 years inside out. It's a good feeling.

Oh also in my 20 years of messing with music I never finish any tracks either...I think that's fine unless you are hell bent on having finished tracks for some reason? I usually just try out ideas and when I'm done I move on, most often I just turn everything off without even saving it. As long as I'm learning stuff I'm happy, plus I have no need to have finished tracks sat on my hard-drive...maybe one day that will change

i just trolled the shit out of /h/, hope i dont get banned

i don't record. ableton LITERALLY has an audible noise floor for me. like if i open a completely empty project it's audible. if i bounce that project and open the 'empty' wav file and then amplify it, eventually the noise is audible. so if i have 30 quiet stems the noise on each of them stacks up and it can be heard quite easily

Any decent, cheap audio interfaces with a 1/4" headphone socket?

I don't need much else, just midi keyboard and mic to attach as well

(outside of your playing and gear ofc)

DI is all about them impulse responses and heavy eqs bruv

RedWirez ( http://www.redwirez.com/free1960g12m25s.jsp ) loaded up into Nadir or something similiar is what most people end up doing. I don't fuck with amp sims for guitars anymore but i'm pretty sure these will do you better than poulins cab sims

Is there any point to buying a dotcom modular in 2017? The only thing eurorack doesn't seem to have are a few esoteric early moog designs.
