Best in thread, just because I love this style of music. The sax and random synth squeals top it off nicely. I'd say louder drums though, just because I like very punchy mixes.
>>73040893
An album worth of stuff like this would be amazing relaxation music, it's the right amount of sublety. Depending on what you're going for though you could mix the drums slightly louder or just make them break through the mix more.
>>73047835
You can basically just use any drum samples and process them to sound the way you want.
>>73041610
I think it's because in older stuff we're less focused on achieving an end goal and were just jamming.
>>73045066
I love making offbeat melodies like that, it's fun to throw people off the rhythm.
>>73045776
Super clean, though I guess that's to be expected using Zedd stems. There's not really anything wrong with it maybe you could spice it up with some glitchy loopy bits.
>>73058005
Distortion on the sub will increase the aggressiveness, >>73060612 is right.
>>73058920
More punch anon, it has plenty of potential
>>73059964
Give it some sub, groovy loop though
>>73062545
The sub has no sub are the two bass lines conflicting? Or does it just need eq. And you need to into mixing and mastering, a good mix should be punchy and loud before mastering.
>>73063699
Tons of potential, find some nice instruments and you're set.
>>73063699
Finally someone who can into a punchy mix, I like this. Are the vocals yours? Keen to see how it progresses after this.
>>73066840
This anon >>73067770 is right, maybe you could try shortening the drum tails and that shaker thing to give it space. But it's a mighty fine track.
>>73066870
The vocals stand out in a strange way, kind of sibilant, maybe further eq and follow >>73067924 advice
>>73067359
Trippy, liking it so far, but it sounds far away, louder percussion would help.
>>73067706
The kick has popping at the end of the sample, fade out, sounds interesting though

No, you're still barely at 0db, I quickly ran your track through my standard mastering process. It should sound more like this. I took out nearly 6db at the fundamental kick frequency and added about +3db in the highs.
https://clyp.it/4fif103s
I really enjoyed listening to it, the mix was amazing.
>>
>>73075168
>No, you're still barely at 0db
I was worried about damaging the mix because of so much going on (bass-kick), I just pushed the gain on my maximizer until the signal started to die, then dialled it back... If you reckon it can withstand more I'll do more.
>I took out nearly 6db at the fundamental kick frequency and added about +3db in the highs.
Is the kick too loud? Are the highs too quiet? I think the problem is when I made the synths I filtered the highs and then I kind of added them back in with sends and mastering, I should really just go back into the mix and fix it there
>I really enjoyed listening to it, the mix was amazing.
Thanks, I wasn't sure about it. I really don't like making house music because the lows get flooded and claustrophobic. And thanks for the re-master, I'll keep it in mind

sup /prod/

i'm new to mixing, but have recently figured out the benefits of using start-up templates in ableton

what are some good default macros to set for every channel?

I was thinking a High Pass Filter and Low Pass Filter for sure... but what else would be useful to set on the other 4 available knobs?
>>
So I'm using reason 9, slaved to fl 12. I have two midi channels in FL running two synthesizers in reason. Now i didnt configure it but I'm trying to figure out how to add a third. Tried a whole bunch of output and port settings in fl but I couldn't find a way to get the third midi channel for control the third synth.
Any tips?

guitar recording doesnt sound bad, but there's nothing really interesting or gripping about the track thats happening there. add some stuff to it.

Been using this one for a little while:

http://www.philharmonia.co.uk/explore/sound_samples

Huge collection of orchestral instruments playing individual notes, and each note has a sample for piano, mezzo-forte, forte, etc. and at different lengths.
By themselves the samples can sound a bit tinny at times, but with the right processing it would probably sound better given that they're recordings of natural instruments.

Hey everyone, im working on a new beat and I used a sample for the first time. I was wondering if you guys have any idea if I could make the melody more interesting. Learned about "shell chords". The 3rd and 7th are the most important notes in a chord that define its sound so just get rid of all the other shit. It creates an ambiguous sound and it's harmonically sparse, giving room for a more complex melody or solo.

Sounds good to me! To add more melody or movement (1:00), I would throw a gate on your pads (or sample) and side chain it to your hats or something. It'd possibly give it a nice studder effect and could liven up the tempo. Also try experimenting with distortion effects to give your sampled a more high end presence

the only presets i've made are parallel compression and one for bass guitar for mixing, but i'm sure a lot of people would probably start with reverbs and delays on their returns too

Anyone know of any recording programs like audacity or adobe audition that are compatible with ASIO?
>>
>>73077337
(og anon) you'll always clip at 0db.

headroom* as in the space you have between getting no signal and distorting is extremely small. On top of that, it has a high noise floor as well.

Audacity isn't, others that are either can't multitrack or would just be additional cost. Ableton can't handle recording audio without chirps and crackles for me no mater what audio preferences so I need to record audio in some other program that uses ASIO for low latency.

You're still not any further down the road with this - did you try the DPC spike checker tool in the last thread?

Ableton has its flaws but it doesn't have a problem like the one you're having without there also being something amiss closer to the hardware or OS configuration that brings it out.

Example - Focusrite clicks and pops with AMD processors (there's a driver update that fixes it)

>>73084565
Whoops for whatever reason though we said MME, brain's fried. But all my focusrite drivers are up to date unless these are some special ones, I'll try them out. So far my prod experience has been 5% music making and 95% troubleshooting.
>>
>>73084728

Fuck I was just guessing Focusrite, I'm not laying this at their (or AMD's) door but I always had chipset issues with AMD systems (VIA chipsets were a bitch particularly) and it tended to lead me down the same road you're on - all I can add is that you will get it fixed if you persevere.

Try the driver fix and let us know if it worked - it might help someone else tearing their hair out with the same thing.

>>73085935
Yeah, my recording setup is shit; I'm back at my parent's house post-graduation and it's just a random room that I can put my instruments in plus a Snowball mic. I'm moving tomorrow, and will have my own space and more money so I'll be able to set up a better place with better equipment (though unfortunately sans drums and piano, since it's an apartment with limited space and noise stuff, which sucks).
As for shooting for, like I said I don't really know what I'm doing, so I started with a chord progression I had been messing around with and knew I liked and felt out the rest. I was going to add more in the middle (as well as rerecord the drums), but I just did this a couple days ago and I'm already moving. I mostly was just shooting to make a song with these instruments. I've done some acoustic guitar stuff in the past, but rarely have I added anything else, so I thought it'd be good to get a little feel for it.
>>
>>73086179
ah, good luck in the apartment man, ive got no idea how i'm going to record once i move out lol

defs going to need to move past the usb mic. maybe cop a good keyboard and some kontakt libraries so you can demo out drums and piano before you're able to record the real thing
>>
>>73084920
Nah driver download didn't do anything, I figured it wouldn't since the crackles/chirps only happen in Ableton, they're not present in other programs so it should be anything to do with the box itself or its drivers I'd think.

Thanks m8. I'm moving to somewhere with pretty low housing prices, and I'll be there for at least 6 years, so while I'll stay at the apt for probably a year I'm gonna look into getting a house. Then I could bring my drums up, which would be awesome.

Good idea. I actually just got a synth recently, but I don't really know how to use it and my attempts to get it to record sound to my comp' through my DAC ended in failure, so I'm going to try to figure that out once I move, also.
I actually also have what I think might be a pretty okay full-size keyboard from when I was a kid, but somehow the LCD screen broke when I was like 13 and it's a mess to do anything on it now.

I posted a clip yesterday and got some great feedback. Here's the progress I've made so far:

I'm just starting out, going for a sample-based hip-hop sound like madlib/J dilla. This is probably the first song I haven't given up on.
Looking for feedback, I don't know much about mixing so i'm just trying to get the flow of the song down first. Gonna watch some Eq/mixing tutorials on my day off tomorrow
>>
>>73089551
When the drums drop out automate the synth so it sounds like it's coming toward in the mix. Also that clipping didn't sound intentional...

The song doesn't really sound like it goes anywhere, you need some other synths or key changes or something to build some interest

Not garbage at all

Just based off of this song though I'd say your a much better producer than a songwriter. Also I have no idea what you were trying to do in the intro

That other percussive sample you've got going is a nice touch, just subtle enough. Up until 1:20 ish it sounds nice enough, I just wish there was some singing or something to pull the whole track together. My favorite part was the outro definitely. I could imagine something great with that.

>>73090626
Those hats????

Dude these tracks sounds pretty good it's just the song writing and a few questionable decisions that are making me scratch my head about you lol

>>73090666
Pointless intro imo. Rains too loud.

I feel like there should be a bit of verb on the guitar... going for more of an old school sound

That talking just feels like lazy sampling to get around making something to fill in your track. You've got good music buried beneath that man, why hide it?
>>
>>73090711
hmm, i kinda half assed the sampling in the middle, even though the intro isnt needed, i felt it slapped a hook onto the song, its like a hook in a narrative, not needed but its cool if ya got one. I tried to think of some sample that would fit the theme of this song and i got this one, ill work on it more

I didn't think it needed more embellishment really. I heard a lot in the low mids that I would have cut out but then again I'm tired and that sounds like it's just the style of music. Where's the rest of the track though, it sounded like something exciting was coming and I just got left hanging!

The singing... plosives ssss's etc. sounds like you have a cold dude. You don't have a bad voice but i feel like if you stayed conscious of it during another take it would be a lot better.

>>73091154

I know noisia is an unparalleled outlier when it comes to music production but
https://youtu.be/z6kpnd9ziQo?t=355

at 5:55, did they use a VST or something for the vocals? Or are they well funded enough that they got an actual choir to do the vocals?

How would I get something close to that with a VST? Or is there a sampler/sample pack I could use?
>>
https://instaud.io/Z1f

heave ho

>>73093555
Probably sampled from an actual choir recording of a song knowing NOISIA.

There are a lot of good choir libraries out there right now.

I use 8dio requiem (as seen in the latter half of this)

http://sso.mattiaswestlund.net/
>>
>>73093809
if that's the case, then do you know what genre that type of choir/singing is called?
Gregorian chants aren't quite as intense and looking up "choir" on youtube gets me generic christian rock choir groups
>>
>>73093885
Just general polyphony/choral music.

Starts at renaissance polyphony, ends around the middle of the 20th century for the most part. Could start maybe by searching for bach chorales/masses if you're just after that general sound.

https://youtu.be/jm1os4VzTgA?t=3211

I think the type of sound you're after that's super brutal is more later, like 18th century up to wagner type sound.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvglfJFmXjQ
>>
>>73085615
Like the other dude said, this is pretty boring, I'm not feeling the chord progression at all.

>>73085637
I'm not sure about those chords man..

>>73085802
Bass still hittin the wrong notes.

>>73087810
Like the other anon said, if you find the instrumental flip the phase of it while aligning it with the vocals and you're set.

>>73089551
Nice song, although the mix isn't quite there yet, I'd like the drums to be a bit snappier and I'd EQ the low-mid range mud on the pads that interferes with the drums. Also some multiband comp on that pad is needed, gets a tad too loud and clips. Also bass needed.

>>73089817
Bass is too loud and drowns the drums out, flip that around so the drums are louder than the bass and the kick comes through. Gonna have to surgically EQ the very lo part of the bass maybe, think 50-60 Hz, this bass doesn't really need those freqs. Also it gets repetitive after a while, that would be a good loop for 4 bars but 2 minutes of this is way way too much.

>>73090546
Really great track. Snare seems to be a bit too quiet, overall you could get much more loudness out of this but that's because I'm a huge EDM-head (>>73083290 is me). The flute thing is actually amazing. Also this just SCREAMS "ADD FEMALE VOCALS". Good job.

>>73090626
I have to agree with the other anon here, the hi-hats are a bit fucked, they sound better in context when the kick+snare enter but still they need more variation and the track begs for more foley overall.

>>73090666
I was expecting great things because of the intro, but it doesn't flow well with the rest of the track. Rain is way too fuckin loud jesus take it down. Also some of the samples seem to contradict each other. I'm not sure how much you did on this, it all just sounds like 4 samples thrown in together.

>>73090884
Way too loud, ear piercing and sounds like you randomly programmed notes into the piano roll.
>>
say I have a bass sidechained to my drums.
When I have a section where my drums cut out but the bass remains, the bass becomes overpoweringly loud.

How do you solve this elegantly?
The best I've found is to just sidechain the bass to a duplicated drum set that's muted but plays through all the parts
>>
>>73094078
Can't you just automate the volume so it's lower during that section?

I'm a newfag but that's what I'd do.
>>
>>73094117
you could but then you'd, well, have to automate it.
It might also subtly affect the sound and screw with the levels and how it interacts with the other instruments

if it's sidechained all the way through then the sound level will be consistent with the rest of the song
>>
>>73094078
Automate the volume of the bass? It's quite a simple solution
>>
I found a really old song I made from 2012 when I was 14 and it's really taking me back

The production is shit but it sounds surprisingly good for what I used to make back then and the melody/song itself isn't even that bad. It makes me want to remake it.

https://clyp.it/ee2mxvvq
>>
anyone know how earl did this shit? talking about the beat obviously.

https://youtu.be/tZ5Mu2gs-M8
>>
>>73094190
It sounds fucking cool. It's sort of lacking a structure, though.

But definitely work on it. Five years is a long ass time. You're gonna need a lead if you don't wanna add lyrics though cause it sounds pretty empty.
>>
>>73094245
"lacking structure" describes all my music from back then

I've lost the original project file AND switched DAWs so it's pretty much lost to the ages as it was so I have no choice but to re-make it

my biggest fear/problem is the new version won't capture the mood of the original. It sounded (and still sounds) almost exactly like I wanted it to but it still has that amateur funk to it.

I want to remake and make it into something *more*, but I don't know how I would. It's hard to put into words.
>>
>>73094347
I get what you mean. I try to work on old tunes every now and then and I can't shake off that amateurish vibe without making the song shitty or generic.

Maybe you should try to make it sound as close as possible as the original one. With five years of experience it'll sound really different even if you try to recreate it.
>>
>>73094347
same here. its hard to recreate that one of a kind vibe. even changing a few elements of a mix will completely change the atmosphere.
>>
>>73094230
sounds like he sampled a bunch of random sounds recorded through a skype call

i know certain parts of the song are exported with a very low bitrate. apparently 40, drakes producer, uses this technique a lot
>>
>>73094078
duplicate the sound or automate

i sometimes like duplicating sounds for different sections because its easy to have automation get messy towards the end of a project. i think you should only do this if the plug ins are low cpu
>>
>>73094466
so that's the secret? way simpler than I thought. thanks

>>73094919
A bit too quiet and verb'd. I know this was recorded in a concert hall but it's like the mic is a bit farther away from the piano.
>>
>>73095255
I had two mics inside the piano and two about seven meters away, so i can tone down the reverb. It's possible that my love of everything reverberated and echoing got the better of me.
>>
>>73095439
yeah senpai ease up on the verb and bring up the overall volume.

Well there's nothing melodic or rhythmic at all to grab onto before 1:24, and nothing made me want to keep listening. I didn't care for the vocals at all. They're far too consonant- any time the synth hits with them they're always on the same note and it's all very... safe sounding. You don't have to make it super dramatic or anything but you should be arranging these elements to chords to make more interesting harmony.

Also for some reason it reminded me of that cave area in Kotor, I think a gated reverb on the kick would be fitting.

Sorry for the lacking response originally lol

What vstis are good for that vintage 80s electro industrial sound? I've been using arturia synths and z3ta virus but they don't really do the trick for me and I feel like I'm just going to fall in that synthwave meme with both products.

Drumkits are something I've taken care of. Got plenty of good samples and fx sounds.

for Siamese Dream,

"Vig didn’t much care for the midrange in Corgan’s voice, so to soften that particular timbre he used a Shure SM7 (generally regarded as a more “open”-sounding mic when its rolloff and boost features are engaged simultaneously) through an API preamp and a Summit TLA-100 Tube Limiter, all fed back into Corgan’s headphones. Like everything else, vocal takes were abundant, with Corgan sometimes singing for eight hours at a time to make sure his tracks were pitch perfect."

But hi dude!
>can i ask you for the sample
I actually don't know what song it is but I know it's Johnny Dyani on bass
>what you did to it in terms of fx, mix and stuff
Kind of a lot to explain haha. Uhhhhh I honestly have no orthodox way of doing anything... I just mix till it sounds good (I know that's a shitty answer but it's the truth). I guess I could tell you I work mostly with audio, then I use battery 4 for drums, fabfilter Q and L for mixing on pretty much every track. I just find a sample and then see what it wants to become, then make it. It's so hard to explain I'm sorry I know.

Self taught/youtube/a few production classes in college that taught me nothing other than how to make a deadline lol. Just listen to hella music man. Pretty sure I still have a ways to go so it's still what I do, just listen to more and more music
>>
>>73103548

i listen a lot of music already, just pass resources my man :°)
>>
>>73103592
I have never read a production book. My college class didn't do anything for me t.b.h. But yeh I started on all those same plebshittier tutorial channels like 4 years ago (seamlessr the gang, you know). Just got inspired and got to it. Really just is trial and error. I indeed have lots of horrible projects and the ones that are good are unfinished. All my prod resources are those known ones, I'd say 85% of my learning I've done by ear so I don't really know how to translate that. I do have a 100gb folder of samples, that helps get things rolling. Start working up a personal sample library and just piecing things together arbitrarily hey maybe you'll make something amazing who knows?

holy shit I fuckin love that snare. And the rest of the clip. It sounds so alien and weird great sounds man. Also dat bass groove in the second half is godly is it a sample?
>>73101643
transition in the beginning can use a lot of work. Also play around with the velocity of the drums. Otherwise it has a pretty nice vibe
>>
Anyone have some decently recorded vocals that need pitch correction? I'm gonna put an ad on Fiverr where I'll pitch correct people's vocals and I need some non copyrighted examples of what I can do. I'll only use like 10 seconds of it for the example, but I'll tune a whole vocal track as a trade.

Again I want the examples to all sound good, so no laptop mic recordings or anything

Linux is probably the worst OS for making music. It's fine if you want to use Pure Data I guess...

I'd appreciate any feedback and advice.
What I'm worried the most about is the drums. Don't know if it's the levels or compression but I can't seem to get it right. But maybe there are bigger issues.
>>
>>73108070
Wtheck man your drums are barely audible. Just turn them up...? You shouldn't be relying on compression to get a good sound except for very specific instances.

Also that bell ish sound is a bit crazy with the panning
>>
>>73108254
I think the hats are really loud tho. I can fix the snare and kick easily but hats are still a pain in the ass to me.

Also I can barely hear the panning thing. Maybe I'm deaf or something, I'll turn it down a little.
>>
>>73108254
Oh also every tutorial on drums I've watched says to use compression. Is that wrong? It sounds all over the place to me if I don't.
>>
>>73108294
What are you using that you can't separate the volume of the different drums....

>>73108319
there are a looooot of shitty tutorials and misinformation out there. You need to get a handle on velocity if it's all over the place.

What I mean about the compression is it should be icing on the cake usually, not something that you need to sound decent. If that's the case, something else is the problem.
>>
>>73074795
Thank you guys for helping me make these 15 songs the past 9 months. Though harsh, it has helped a lot.
>>

>What are you using that you can't separate the volume of the different drums
No I can, I was careless tho and fucked them up before uploading.
>there are a looooot of shitty tutorials and misinformation out there
Yeah for real. It's cool to have this to clear up doubts cause a bunch of the info out there is ass.

Hi guys,

This is about to get mastered, any final recommendations about the mix itself? Anything stick out that could be better? Drums are supposed to sound washy and buried for this one.

So I cut up some mp3 from youtube and got 24 different samples (each in it's own channel).. but in the 'Sampled beats' folder, there's only ONE of them??? When I export project zip, there's also just one mp3 file there.. how the fuck do I get these out???

nice stuff
really like that flute sample, gives it a funky vibe.
Filtering is good, but i think it might benefit if you also filter with some High Pass and not just Low Pass... essentially turning some of your filtering into band-pass (but with a definable width). Also maybe add a bit of delay to your filter track, might give things more interest as they drop out or quickly change frequency.

General thoughts on composition & arrangement? Intended for a action/mission section for a game.

How do you recreate the Waves doppler effect using more bare-bones elements?

Say I wanted to make a preset fx chain within kontakt that has the same effect how would I go about it? The waves doppler plugin is from the early 00s and it clicks when it finishes a cycle through the stereo field so I was looking for something more up to date.

>>73114932
slightly automate delays against each other on both sides by a few milliseconds

ME AGAIN]

Okay so I hadn't touched this for a few hours and since nobody responded I decided to go with it anyway and shit. SO
You know how usually you can drag a sample from this menu here direct to the playlist? Well every time I try doing that, with any of the 24 cuts, I just get the same one bit pasted into the playlist!! And it's not like I need to expand it or anything - it's just the one sample!!1111
>>
>>73114986
And when I click 'make unique'... It transforms into that one sample too

its out of time at certain points, sometimes so bad that it sounds like youre forcing an odd time signature

the piano sound like a midi

Thank you. I'm kind of interested in how the specific modules interact with each other in your setup.
I have the turing machine module and it needs a clock in to trigger it I'm guessing but I'm unsure as to what module to get use as a clock source? I'm thinking of building a output module and 4ms PEG and getting a few of the expansions for the turing machine
