what i find funny is that lyrical content distresses you. that's all they are, just lyrics. desu the vocals on this particular record are so buried under the noise that i can hardly make out any lyrics, but i still enjoy it all the same.

Badges?!? Recognition?!?

Son, lemme tell you somethin’. It’s real important, so pay attention close, huuUH?

Son, this game is about more than just accolades. People will tell you /daily/ ain’t about how you play. It’s about the money, the fame - all them records plastered all over the walls. It’s about a spot in the /daily/ chart, a winning record in a tournament. Maybe an album that gets meme status. Nah, nah, nah, it’s all bullshit. BULL. shit.

When you’re out there, they’re gonna tell you “you gotta get taste”. Maybe you should “expand your listening” or some shit. When you’re out here in the big leagues, all you’re gonna hear is criticism. The truth is - no one’s got your back. But I do.

You’ll hear all this praise of obscure music, owl hoots, shittin sounds all dubbed up by the Fishmen or somethin. It’s different out here on /daily/. All that garbage? It ain’t you son. I can tell. Stick with whatchu know and I what I taught you. And you’ll be fine.

You ain’t gotta feel bad if you don’t rock with Machine Gun or Nicolas Collins. Do you think Dr J let people clown him for his style at Rucker Park? Do you think Stockton cared when people ragged on his stupid ass high socks? Naaahhh. They just played the game the way that worked for THEM.

lovely day to sit inside and listen to good music
>Stars of the Lid - The Tired Sounds Of
yeah, this one was real nice. i love these types of albums: drone albums that have a lot of subtle details to keep you captivated if you listen to it, but are mellow and soft enough to make for great sleeping albums. awesome atmosphere with this one.
4.0-
>Taylor Deupree - Snow (Dusk, Dawn)
i just tried this on a whim during class one day bc i needed something to work to, and this is just another good ambient/drone ep. weird this is the 2nd top rated ambient work with among my rym friends, tho.
3.5-
>Paavo - s/t
The first two songs are awesome - I love the avant-garde scatting and the whole cutesy yet off-the-walls vibe of the album. Unfortunately, it falls of pretty quickly, but its still good enough to make for a great first listen.
3.5-
>Kevin Drumm - Sheer Hellish Miasma
not really my taste in noise. some parts of it were very daunting, and i liked a lot, but most of it felt very slow, and honestly too tame. its not as powerful of a wall as something like mo-te is. still, pretty alright.
3.0-
>Steve Roach - Dreamtime Return
disappointing. this looked like his "magnum opus", based on the length and variety of the genre tags, but most of it was honestly quite boring. there were some pretty ethereal moments, but theyre nothing compared to all of structures from silence.

>m a l i b l u e :( - just end it
The first maliblue work to really engage me. The best aspects of all other works i've heard from them (their atmosphere) are still present, but there is a level of detail and beauty that is unlike anything i've heard from them.
7

>Arik Manley - the reason for living was to get ready to stay dead a long time.
Birth and † are the only tracks on this monster i like a bit, and even then, there are a lot of instances of unintentional and distracting audio distortion within it. most every track on this album is paulstrech, and that's fine. when used as a tool in a larger picture, paulstrech is amazing at capturing tones that would be hard to replicate and putting them on a larger scale. When you not only present these paulstreches with minimal alteration, but then have half the tracks on the album riddled with mastering errors that would take seconds to fix that completely kill any feeling of atmosphere, care so minimally about the establishment of aesthetic or theme, and make that album well over 2 hours long, you lose me. Honestly didn't finish most tracks on this album, but i jumped around through all of them. Can safely say that not much happens. Not sure why Microsound is a secondary on this, either. not into it.
2

>Merzbow / Keiji Haino / Balázs Pándi - 迷惑をかけない無防備 (An Untroublesome Defencelessness)
The commonly cited earthquake effect from this record is pretty neat, and I love the restraint Merzbow uses on this, but it feels kinda poorly mastered. Every layer feels like a different album, without much of a point or goal. Still fun.

>Jim O'Rourke - I'm Happy, and I'm Singing and a 1,2,3,4 [2009 Repress Bonus Tracks Only]
They build off the original album well, though i feel Getting the Vapors would have been better as either the first or last of the bonus tracks. If you liked the original, you'll like these additions.

>Cor Fuhler & Jim O'Rourke - F.O'R
Fucking terrifying. Constant strings grinding against each other, never ending mechanical squeaking. This is death raga.
7

>Rhodri Davies / Ko Ishikawa - Compositions for Harp and Sho
Preformances of 4 pieces by different composers. Very sparse. Not sure how the last track was preformed without electronics, so some major bonus points for that.
6

>Chino Amobi - PARADISO
More of the same stuff from Amobi. while that stuff is still a blunt and interesting approach to sound collage, i don't think i'd like another release in a row that sounds in the same style with the same lack of progression he's been staggering on for a while. was going to give this a 6, but some of the last few tracks caught me off guard. not sure how adventure time samples fit into the image of what it means to be a black man in 21st century america, but i digress.
7

>The Mothers of Invention - Freak Out!
Less chaotic than Absolutely Free, which is a let down. Still, this has some pretty killer tracks, and the last 3 tracks specifically are a lot of fun.

Other cool stuff i've heard recently that i'd like to bring to your attention:

>Hanali - End Gorge EP
The energy on this is pretty unmatched, and while it does fall into some modern south american influenced cliches here and there, it fills its run time to the brim. if you like Príncipe Discos, but want something you could more easily dance to, go here.
https://flamebait.bandcamp.com/album/end-gorge-ep

>Thought Adjuster - You're Not Alone
Vaporwave for fans of Replica who don't mind absolute minimalism. Shockingly emotional.
https://occasionallytapes.bandcamp.com/album/youre-not-alone

>Plus-tech Squeeze Box - Cartooom!
the logical conclusion of picopop. if the mario kart wii soundtrack were somehow more ADHD. you need this album.
it's up for streaming on youtube and dl links can be found pretty easily.

>torrent my pets - EP2
short (under 10 minutes long) plunderphonics ep made out of samples of youtube videos with under 30 views. big stroke.

Aw, I missed a review of Solo Violin Improv

Also, good opinions on Taylor Deupree and Paavo. I used to love Paavo a lot more, but I kind of cut back for exactly the reasons you described. Snow is hands down one of the best ambient drone albums I've ever heard tho

solo violin improvisations was really neat. i got super lost in it when i listened, to the point where i audibly said "it's over?" to myself when it ended, which is a good thing. my favorite part was definitely the plucking, i loved how technical it was. it was fun, i might throw it on again next time i study or something.

>Death Cab for Cutie - Transatlanticism
Emotional, well done "indie rock" that's for the mostly a cut above the rest when it comes to this kind of music, if not particularly interesting. However, it's brought down by a few very weak tracks, namely Transatlanticism and Passenger Seat. 3/5

>Elton John - Tumbleweed Connection
Noodly, flimsy pop tunes that are completely safe and go on for way too long. As a result, this album is almost entirely bland and boring. Elton supposedly has the voice of an angel, but I don't hear it. 1.5/5

>Steve Roach - The Magnificent Void
Ambient like this is why ambient gets a bad wrap so often. I appreciate the darker sound, but it's much too basic and it all sounds the same, possibly the most generic ambient album I've ever heard. How could someone who once made Structures from Silence also release this? 1.5/5

And now I've filled out a whole chart with bad taste. But in between that chart's creation and now, I've managed to buy a ton more secondhand CDs, so I'll be back in a bit with a new chart.
>>
I don't have time now, but I'm going to spend more time with the latter two, which are quite dense.

>Earthless - Sonic Prayer
These guys are consistently quality. Imagine Acid Mothers Temple with less nuance (they're a power-trio) but better improvisational and probably technical ability. Like I said, I can see how some would think it borders on shredding (see: dumb), but I can appreciate how far they've pushed the idea of a guitar solo, for example, or extreme riff-age. They've quite mastered it, in that respect. Right when you think they've hit a peak, it somehow escalates again. My only criticism is how it relies too heavily on just being a vehicle for the guitar. You'll know if it's for you.
7.5/10

>Bow Street Runners - s/t
Now onto some old stuff that sometimes ventures closely to pure camp. I can see how this became a cult hit. Unlike most bands from this time, these guys are undoubtedly competent, serious musicians, and it's apparent in how eclectic it sounds. Some of it sounds like a jugband from this time, quite a bit funky and not far off from what The Meters were doing, almost every track has some prog-like movements. Vocals were prominent and tough to sit through quite often, though.
7/10

>Cold Sun - Dark Shadows
Speaking of vocals, they just about ruined the deal here. They're also incredibly loud and jarring here and border on unlistenable. But what a great backing band. This could've been really cool had it had a quality mix. Everyone mentions the Elevators, but I think there's clearly more of an early heavy metal thing going on. There's good consistency throughout in how it all has this eerie, floating feeling (save for the incongruously upbeat "Here in the Year"). Just going to have to spend more time until it stops annoying me.
6.5/10

>Autechre - Confield
I was pretty surprised by this album having a few bangers. I did not expect their songs to have hip-hop influences. Overall this album is pretty good. It has great moments, namely Pen Expers, Bine, and Lentic Catachresis which are extremely energetic and catchy while still being slightly obtuse and comprising of strange ear tickling textures. Everything else was kind of okay though and besides generally sounding interesting didn't really wow me. I'm sure this is the kind of album that takes time to absorb, so I'll be revisiting it.

>Albert Ayler - Spiritual Unity
Slightly uninteresting build up to an extremely great payoff. Ghosts: Second Variation is undoubtedly the peak of this album. I love how chaotic it is while still being tied down to a central, standard jazz theme that was teased in Ghosts: First Variation. The sax tone is so rich and expressive, and the drums do a great job of keeping up with Ayler's frantic pace. On the other hand, I do not enjoy what the bass is doing at all. It seems so out of place to me at most times and is just distracting. It sounds odd like a sour note.

While it's extremely impressive that this was recorded in '64, I don't think it's the end all be all of free jazz like some claim.

>Otomo Yoshihide's New Jazz Ensemble - Dreams
I initially loved this album, but it has a few minor issues. It's a solid album, especially the cover of Jim O'Rourke's Eureka that descends into madness, but a few songs sound a little underdeveloped and focus too much on weak vocal performances. I just found myself skipping these tracks to get to the good bits on repeated listens. Also, the last song is decent on its own, but it feels so out of place considering the great build and release song that came before it. I really dig how jazz instrumentation is fused effortlessly with electronic elements. The music is layered and mixed incredibly well, and you notice the impact of Sachiko's sine waves when you listen carefully.

dreams is a grower for me, but i agree that a few of the songs are pretty lacking compared to others.

Got it, and thank you for your help. I'm confused about a few things, though:

Below each trip is an image, that almost seems like is drawn out of a hat.

Above each trip are two white boxes, one for a score, and the other for... something.

What is the black and white album on the middle right?

Is there any sense as to which blank space on the chart I put my review?
>>
>>73047979
no-one really knows which square is for what or whatever, do what you like
I choose a picture that conveys my mood

the black and white album is just an extra image the op put in the image for fun, people usually add a picture of the artist or stuff there

>>73047979
>the other for... something

>>73047979
>Below each trip is an image, that almost seems like is drawn out of a hat.
Yeah. Usually a meme or rando image. Sometimes conveys image in a reaction sort of way but not always

>Above each trip are two white boxes, one for a score, and the other for... something.
I use one for my score and the other for what it's out of, but no one is sure why both are necessary.

>What is the black and white album on the middle right?
It's just the back cover I believe? Usually that's reserved for another image involving the artist

>Is there any sense as to which blank space on the chart I put my review?
Nah go wild

Song for my Father was some of the best hard bop I've heard. I usually like hard bop but am never amazed by it; this is a rare exception.

First track of Les Stances a Sophie was WOW. The mix of funk and free jazz was incredible. Nothing else even on the album even touches it but was nice overall.

R.E.M. - Automatic for the People (1992)
>alternative rock, pop rock

I’m not an R.E.M. fan, but this is pretty nice. The band sheds the mysterious jangle pop sound of Murmur and Reckoning in favor of a more streamlined, poppy alternative sound, which sounds like a negative, but they pull it off really well. It can get /really/ cheesy, especially in the span from “Everybody Hurts” (one of my least favorite songs ever) to “Star Me Kitten”, but it starts and ends really strongly. “Drive”, “Man on the Moon” and “Nightswimming” are three of the best big alternative rock singles out there, especially the folk-tinged, nearly country-fried first two. I outta give these guys some more fair shakes, they’re growing on me.

Robert Johnson - The Complete Recordings (1990)
>delta blues, acoustic blues

Simply based on how far-reaching Johnson’s influence was, this is arguably one of the most influential, important compilations of all time. King of the Delta Blues should probably be given that honor, given that it was /the/ album that basically started british blues and blues rock (yeah, thanks for that), but with this compilation you basically get to hear the building blocks of 20th century music, especially rock. So as a historical document, it’s incredible, but I’ve got still some complaints. My complaints mostly lie with the structure, mainly how alternate recordings of songs are placed back to back with the original songs. It’s of course cool to see the different versions, but placing them back to back is a really poor decision. Can’t diss the music, though. Johnson’s vocals are the apex of passionate, and his guitar work, while repetitive over time, is insanely cool. He makes his guitar sound like a ragtime tack piano, it’s the coolest fucking thing.

Martha Argerich performing Franz Liszt / Frédéric Chopin / Maurice Ravel / Cepгeй Пpoкoфьeв / Johannes Brahms - Chopin / Brahms / Liszt / Ravel / Prokofieff (1961)
>romanticism

I’ve made my general disdain of overly technical music fairly well known, but I guess Argerich is my one exception. Her Chopin performances are incredibly technical, and incredibly fast. She plays them with an insane amount of precision but isn’t afraid to totally cut loose. The pieces and their performances are a lot subtler here, Argerich plays around a lot with space and silence rather then going balls to the walls, and honestly I like the faster stuff more. This is absolutely beautiful, don’t get me wrong, but the pieces here are a bit weaker here than the typical fare from their respective composers, and Argerich has some better performances on record. Still really, really good.

>Autechre - Confield
>Techno, Ambient

Now THIS is what I expected out of a duo like Autechre. The equipment isn't cheap, there isn't a clear definition for what they're creating.

The opening track clearly has their marks on it-- the sonic bouncing, the misleading rhythm. A quiet piano-like tone plays behind the crystal percussion, and this isn't music for robots OR humans-- this is music for space. Not extraterrestrial space; it fits the concept of space itself. The ambient and looming back-textures are what fit the wandering punches, taps, and plinks of Autechre's sound.

Cfern breaks apart the classical piano of the previous song through a down-spiraling intestine. Pen Expers jumps into the beats you'd expect from French House, and doesn't even worry about a melody until a few minutes in. What I REALLY liked about this track is how the synth pads that grow behind the song make it sound like the percussion is losing its groove if you're not focusing on it, but in fact doesn't lose tempo at all.

Parhelic Triangle and Sim Gishel work off of gritty loops, the former being my favorite from its design alone. The way the song's slowly morph over several minutes makes this stand out over LP5, which feels stationary when compared to this. Bine is like an extended robotic drum solo on an endless drum set, and Eidetic Casein is a surreal excursion through the back-alleys of Japan.

Uviol is much more sterile, like a hospital waiting room, before you begin to hear suspicious sounds from behind the front counter. Lentic Catachresis is a downtempo beat with faint traces of human voices, before fully depicting a seizure over the course of the last 4 minutes, unabashedly self-destructing as the album's closer.

If this is the album that Autechre finds themselves at their most comfortable, I can't wait to hear their recent works.

that women album cover was corrupted when i got it,

>Alva Noto - Xerrox Vol. 1
>Drone, Ambient, Glitch
Holy fuck this is good. Some of the tastiest that ambient and noise has to offer.

A quote from Boomkat:
>Together with Christoph Brunggel, Nicolai [Alva Noto] designed a 'sample transformer' which would take audio fragments and manipulate them beyond recognition, taking something familiar and de-familiarising it.

Copying recorded samples from real world locations over and over again, the results are like watching a world's collapse. Bit-crushed and compressed valleys, bodies of water, and mountainous ranges's reality decaying at an exponential rate, while the survivors take refuge on what solid ground remains.

Maybe look into this if you're willing to hear something like The Caretaker.

8/10

>Jim O'Rouke - Insignificance
>Singer/Songwriter, Rock

I think the rock instrumentation fits the lyricism a bit better here compared to Eureka, and O'Rouke's guitar sounds much more comfortable. Instead of the sweetness of some of Eureka's instrumentation, the heaviness of rock better portrays O'Rouke's bitter character. There's not one instrumental track here, meaning no movie soundtrack filler.

I still prefer O'Rouke when he's experimenting in electronic music, but I've no doubts about this man's wide array of abilites at this point.

Fav tracks: Get A Room, Memory Lame, Life Goes Off

7/10

>Emeralds & Aaron Dilloway - Under Pressure
>Drone

A strange but not unprecedented collision between Dilloway's frightening world and the smoothness of Emeralds'. While both of their sounds do play decently off of each other, AKA spacey ambience with a hint of horror, this feels more like a meeting rather than a combination of sounds. They each contribute a bit to create a new product, but never intersect beyond that-- their boundaries are very clear.

Still, an interesting listen if you're a fan of either.

>Zamilska - Untune
>Outsider House, Industrial Techno,

Some samples of chants and rituals are used amongst a misty club. The result grows off of loops and mechanical hums. I think there's an issue in confusing deep house with lethargy at times, because most of the work here is muffled and cramped. The samples take less of a presence than I would have liked, or aren't nearly obvious enough.

I noticed there was a remastered version of this album on bandcamp, which is much clearer mixing-wise. Would suggest listening to that, if you feel like losing yourself to techno influenced by "World Music".

6/10

>Cindy Lee - Acts of Tenderness
>lo-fi punk, noise pop

A hypnotic and smoked-out Beach Boys record. I can imagine listening to this music in the room that the album art depicts. It feels like it's telling the type of story where two robbers have a crime go wrong, and they end up murdering someone; noisy epiphanies between joyless nostalgia and demented pop.

Favorite tracks: New Romance, Fallen Angel

6/10

>Tord Gustaven - What Was Said
>ECM Jazz, Vocal Jazz

If you're looking for some complex jazz performance, this album isn't for you. The cover art gives a better indication of what's in here: winter music for a movie, with a foreign vocalist and piano. Like standing outside in wake of a blizzard, it's quiet and exposed. The gospel-like sound may be because some of these tracks are Norwegian hymns translated into Pashto.

is basically frozen

5/10

>Laurel Halo - Dust
>Hypnagogic Pop, IDM

tfw you thought Halo would stop singing after Chance of Rain but she doesn't

This seems like a grower, even with guest apperances like Klein and Julia Holter. I'll get back to leaving comments on this in the future. Don't expect anything new from Halo if you didn't like her previous work.

Julia Holter - Tragedy

This is an album I have a really hard time rating with only a few listens. Holter has been on my "I should listen to this" artist list for awhile, so I was excited to be rec'ed this. Tragedy has a very "grand" feel to it with the elements of drone and ambient mixed with a wide range of both orchestral and electronic instrumentation. Holter's voice has a nice, calming sense and adds to the ethereal feeling of this album. The concept of Tragedy is pretty neat too as it tells the story of the Euripedes play Hippolytus!

This review was trash, but I have a hard time gauging this record after just a few listens, so... yeah.

>>
>>73062850
I've heard a few of her later singles I think off of Loud City Song and they do sound more fleshed out so I'm definitely going to listen to more of her stuff. I still enjoyed Tragedy though, there is just a lot to it and hard to fully get after a few listens.

TOURNEY OVER
it's time for the FINAL RESULTS
>Coil - ...And the Ambulance Died in His Arms
this entire album is hypnotizing. a dead man walks onto the stage, rambles about tranquilizing a horse and eating yew berries, repeats a few lines of lyrics, then he walks off and you feel a newfound emptiness in your heart
>Doopees - Doopee Time
probably the happiest album ever to have a lecture about cancer research papers on it. also, those Japanese accents are the most adorable thing ever.

congrats to Yamir on winning and thanks to everyone for participating
as for prizes, i'm willing to listen to some albums of the 4 semi-finalists' choosing
the distribution of albums is:
yamir - 8 albums
blapp - 4 albums
torts & stick - 2 albums each
(but only if you dear people actually want me to listen to your stuff)
