So I'm thinking about buying this beat up Fender from this local pawnshop. It appears to be MIA, late 70s but previous owner routed a big ass hole next to the tone knob for a killswitch. The owner after that seemed to remove it so it looks like it was shot like that Les Paul in Beck.
Anyways, I really like Buckethead's killswitch on his Gibson because of the big red arcade button and I also like Russel Lissek of Bloc Party's Telecaster Deluxe with a button that plays a noise loop of a cheap flea market toy. I was considering combing the two to install the arcade button but instead of the killswitch it makes the Galaga "PEW PEW" laser sound. Any idea on how this'll work?
>>

>>
>>73026069
Those toy things will put out a lot more signal than guitar pickups, it'll be WAY too loud if you wire it to the output. You'd be better off just holding it over the pickups, that'll give you some control over how much signal it generates to the amp.

Why did Rob Chapman raise the prices on all his guitars? Does he really think that his youtube fame is enough for him to compete against Ibanez and ESP despite being made in a mid tier at best korean factory. I mean really, even the Anderton's review of these things make them sound like shit no matter how much Lee takes Rob's bullshit. It pisses me off that idiots from youtube are buying these despite way better options being available
>>
>>73027954

>>
Hey guys I just started picking back up guitar for the first time since I was a kid. I'm just using some shitty cheap electric guitar that I still had from then. Anyway, I decided to try to fix the intonation, because it was pretty far off, and, long story short, somehow made everything sound much worse.

Checking the open string and then with the 12th fret down with an electronic tuner shows the 12th fret as being an octave higher (or at least very close, I wasn't expecting perfection given that it's a cheap guitar, I just wanted it to at least be better than before), and each individual string is tuned correctly according to the tuner, but the guitar sounds completely out of tune now.

What did I do wrong?
>>
>>73028021
when you tune the strings do you hear any pings near the headstock?
>>
>>73028141
I do not.
>>
>>73028190
are the strings new? if they're new you have to stretch them or the tuning isn't going to be stable

if they aren't new strings and you're using the same set you had when you were a kid, they're probably rusted to hell and dead and you need to get a new set
>>
>>73028141
One string? Or all? Might be bad notches in the fret.
>>
>>73028240
They are new or at least newish, I put the new ones on when I started trying to learn again which was about 2 weeks ago, and just tried adjusting intonation today. The tuning seemed relatively stable up until now, and when I was adjusting the intonation I was trying to stretch them out aswell. My problem isn't so much that the tuning is "unstable" perse, it's that even when it is apparently "properly" tuned it sounds out of tune.
>>
Does jazz sound good on the acoustic guitar?
>>
>>73028294
I think it might just be the d and/or g strings, although my ear for what a guitar should sound like is nowhere near perfect enough for me to be 100% certain on that.

Also to clarify, it sounds out of tune even if I just strum down the open strings. Which seems bizarre to me if the tuner says all the individual strings are correct.
>>
>>73028370
try a different tuner or just tune by ear with some tuner you can find online

Hello /gg/, I've been posting in this thread for awhile now asking about learning guitar and how to get motivated and whatnot. I apologize for being annoying with these questions but I really have no one to ask since everyone I knows hates music.

I just wanted to ask every ones opinion on how to actually practice? Usually I've just been strumming a few notes in a 3 hour a day session. Do you guys have any techniques on how to actually improve instead of just doing what is the equivalent of guitar pissing? Also may I ask what age you all started actually playing, I keep feeling insecure because I feel like I've started too late. Thank you in advance.

>>
Amp is wide ruled paper, guitar is no. 2 pencil, and pedals are Crayons. Make me something nice to hang on the refrigerator.
>>
>>73029480
started at 17, didn't start being anywhere near good until 20
got into music theory and practice routines then
before that, I just used to look up tabs for songs I liked and played them, even though they were way out of my league
I'd just play simplified versions of them
that way I kind of got familiar with the fretboard, and the combinations you can make and those kinds of things
>>
>>73029394
watched a different video at first but just watched his

ehh. i still don't really see the point. the whole detuning to play hard thing is sort of interesting, but you can't constantly play that hard because you're just going to break a string

might be useful for some people but i wouldn't have any use for it because i don't bash the shit out of my strings when i strum

I started at 15 or 16 (26 now), and I'm entirely self taught. I consider myself a solid player but I'm not anything extraordinary, and that's fine cause guitar is just a hobby for me.

I'm no expert, but I'd say it's important to practice in a way that's fun. All I ever did was lookup tabs and learn to play songs, and it never felt like "practice" because I enjoyed doing it. As long as you continually challenge yourself with new songs that are just out of your ability level, you'll improve. People on here talk a lot about bad habits, but in my experience, those tend work themselves out as you get better and better.
>>
>>73029480
I started at 11 and basically went to the woodshed with Youtube and DVD's for about 4 years. I pretty much just found techniques in songs that were interesting to me and went to work on them until I was comfortable. I am a little more casual about it now, though I still put about 1 or two hours a day in. For reference I'm 19 now and can play some necrophagist songs and pretty much everything by iron maiden. Don't give up anon.
>>
>>73029480
I started at 14 and just worked on learning the punk and classic rock songs by bands I was into at the time. After about a year I learned the blues scale so I could kind of approximate the soloing of Jimmy Page (who I was really into at the time). The I got really into neoclassical shred stuff after listening to Randy Rhoads, so I learned some classical-sounding scales like harmonic minor and incorporated that into my electric playing. I also started developing my technique and after about three years I could tap, sweep, and alternate pick pretty well. After about 4 years I found myself getting more into jazz and fusion and that's kind of what I've been into since. I'm 26 now and I can pretty much play whatever, lately I've been working on be bop soloing and using altered tension in my fusion improv.

I don't think there's a bad time to start playing as long as you can dedicate the time to develop your musicianship. AJ Minette, one of my early favorite guitar players, didn't start until he was 16 and 3 years later recorded some of the most ridiculous shred licks on The Human Abstract's debut. Wes Montgomery didn't start until he was 19, and I know a lot of capable players who didn't start until their early 20s (the rhythm guitar player in my band didn't start until he was 21, and he can shred some crazy shit). I've found that being able to imitate my favorite players has always motivated me to keep going and learning more theory and technique and applying it to my original compositions/soloing. I can remember back to when I first started, struggling to play the main theme to "Ode to Joy" on my Squier electric, plinking out one note at a time in my bedroom and fucking up the timing on almost every bar. You'll never be "guitar pissing" if you keep setting goals for yourself and have fun while practicing.
>>
>>73029480
if youre not motivated then youre not gonna do scales and finger exercises, and those are the fundamentals in my opinions. getting the strength, the stamina and the skill lets you start doing anything else on the instrument.

Guitar is like any other instrument in that you actually have to learn how to play it, its just more visually intuitive so stoners think they can get away with playing powerchords on every dotted fret
>>
>>73030287
>>73029480
Also I would recommend the following books, at least from my experience:

"Getting Into Jazz Fusion Guitar" by Mel Bay - Even if you don't want to play jazz, the beginning part of this book that explains the theory behind scales and modes is worth it.

"The Guitar Grimoire: Scales and Modes Edition" - Bought this after I'd been playing a few years just to learn some new patterns, it added some interesting elements to my playing and is a handy reference.

"Jazz Soloing for Guitar" by Les Wise - A recent acquisition, which requires a somewhat advanced understanding of music theory to get into but it's also a VERY direct guide for developing jazz phrasing. Worth 10x the price tag.
>>
>>73029480
Players should always take a few lessons to start. To catch bad habits. If you're beyond that, get a book, DVD or whatever format appeals to you and work through it. Sometimes, you can improve by learning an album by ear. Use tabs, if you're lazy.

I was playing shows in schools and bars, in that order, by 16. Working back from that, I probably started at 13 and I was in a band writing songs 3 months in. How different my life would have been if I didn't get that lawsuit Stratocaster for Christmas.

>>
>>73030647
Definitely, THA's "Nocturne" and BTBAM's "Colors" were hugely influential on my playing when I was 17-18. AJ Minette's use of classical phrasing showed me what I could do with my limited background in classical guitar, while Paul Waggoner's blues-y/jazz sound brought me back to my blues roots and how they could be applied to jazz and even death metal.

I was so happy when THA did "Digital Veil" and it was everything I hoped it would be. Really hope they come back with that lineup.

Is it necessary to play scale positions really fast up and down? I can play all 5 major scale positions comfortably at 150bpm and would like to move on to minor scale, pentathonic scales etc. It's just getting a bit dry after practising it for days.
>>
>>73033743
Personally I would move on if you know the positions very very well
You seems like you are pushing yourself to play faster so fingers are coordination are only going to increase over time
>>
>>73033743
It's necessary to be comfortable with playing scales and it's good that you can do it fast. But you should definitely experiment different sequences in playing the scales, modes etc.
To try and break out of a rut try improvising using 1 or 2 strings only a well.
Also, if you can play the major scale in a lot of positions then you must have somewhat touched on the aeolian mode consciously or subconsciously, and that is basically the minor scale.
Go ahead and try out the pentatonic scales and meld it together with the major and minor scales.
Experiment and keep it fun!
>>
>>73033743
>all 5 major scale positions
Now learn all 7 using 3 notes per string. This will help you to more easily think in terms of modes later.

I've been gathering pedals for a long time. I finally built myself a pedal board the other day. There is still room for a boss dd-7 delay. Next step is getting a Marshall dsl 40c tube amp to replace my cheap old Randall solid state.

I started at 13 learning a bunch of my fav songs.
I stopped for a while, got a bass. Im 22 now (re)learning music theory and stuff. Its not a race, take your time and develop yourself.

There some kids that are a million times better than me, but i know in time ill be where i want to be. Keep that attitude and practice every day. Treat it like a part time job, dedicate time and effort into learning it.

Guitar and bass are difficult, but you can do it anon

While it's not made for electric guitar, classical is fun to play.

On top of that you can always mess around with less used techniques like slapping or two handed tapped chords.

I'm new to guitar so I realise I shouldn't be worried about gear yet, but how do you determine which guitar is right for your sound?

I have a Squier strat, but when I get a nicer guitar I was wondering how you decide what to get. A lot of my favourites play a Fender Jaguar, but some play a Telecaster, others play Gretsch. Short of spending loads on gear, how do you decide what's right for you?
>>
>>73036407
comfort is more important than sound, you can always tweak the differences down the line.
just go into a store and play them
>>
>>73035977
By ska I don't mean third wave ska which is what you're thinking of. I mean first wave Jamaican. Came before reggae. Also ambient is fun to make on guitar
>>
>>73036396
Why exactly do you need so many fuzz pedals? I can't critique really, because I don't own a fuzz pedal and frankly don't think I need one. But I can make an educated guess that FZ-5 is the odd one out. Simply because Big Muff and Fuzz Factory can cover almost anything you might want from a fuzz.
The only one I consider getting myself is velvet fuzz.

Play different chords until one matches the first chord.
Do the same for each subsequent chord.
If you can't work out the tonality, work out the root note first, then try to find the voicing
>>
>>73037250
Thanks, do you know any site that helps with transcribing?
>>
>>73037256
You could get a basic chord structure from any of the tab sites, then fill in details.

I usually start with a blank bit of paper and map out the structure Intro, verse, chorus etc
then divide these into bars, fill in chords, and basic rhythms.

Also worth remembering to work out whether the recording is in a different tuning to standard
>>
>>73037154
>>73037218
Radius also makes a big difference. It's basically how "curved" the fretboard is. The bigger the radius is, the less it is "curved".
Most necks are 12", exceptions I can think of are 12-16" compound radius on Jacksons, 16" radius on most Ibanez, 9" on some JM models

Fender 7.25" best radius

Korean made guitars can be pretty good, depending on the factory it was made in.

Chapman guitars however, are still overpriced. iirc their cheaper models are now Indonesian made, cost more than indonesian Schecters/Ibanez/ESP-LTD, and it's the same with their korean line.

It's literally just hype and marketing that's selling them, they did a very smart move by targeting youtube.

has anyone here learned the piano after learning the guitar?

i'm doing that rn and have a question:
when learning a piece of music on the piano ,do you think of the left and right hand parts independently or as a whole.

closest guitar parallel i experienced was learning some of those nu-agey pieces where the right hand spends a lot of time on the neck. there, i learned not by considering left/right separately, but both parts as a whole.

Hi lads. I have been playing guitar on and off for about 2 years, but 5 months ago really begun to practice seriously. Lately, I hardly spend any time learning songs. I spend most of my time on technique exercises and scale practice. Most people here seem to learn lots of songs then play around with scales for a little bit. Am I doing this shit backwards? Am I going to be a shitter?

Okay I found interesting info about Jackson King V. Dave's guitar was one of the first after the initial prototypes and after few years from this they started to mass produce these. As for a price it was pretty cheap actually when you think about it. These days their prices have increased while the manufacturing quality (i.e. lot of machines and Koreans) have declined.

I know lot of people on this thread only know Gibson... Is the quality of Gibson a myth these days? I was watching a video from their factory in US (I don't remember which place it was actually..) and they were really just churning those guitars out without much care.
>>

I'd say I'm at an intermediate level when it comes to playing, but I can't compose nor improvise for SHIT (I spent most of my time learning songs I liked)

I've heard that Gibsons compare to RondoMusic guitars from Agile AL3000 and upwards, only Rondo sells them much cheaper.

>>
>>73040045
It's a shame that the mass marketing and the business minded practices which only value money instead of craftmanship and art is so common place. It's part of the decline of civilization as whole I think.
>>
>>73040138
Just to add that when watching videos from NAMM 2017 and stuff there's so many different guitars and gear available it's kinda outrageous. Yet there's one thing which is common to them all: cheap manufacturing in Asia.

I mean Chinese have huge issues even with food, they use illegal pesticides and hormones, antibiotics to grow their cattle and they mix chemicals into their raw food which they sell forward to markets. Their hospitals are full of people because they are getting sick from the chemicals. They do it of course to gain money. This is the same mentality which goes towards to any kind of manufacturing there, including guitars.
>>

I got it two days ago. Its an mg69 for sure, the pickups and electronics and serial all add up. It's more of a yellow, but I was told that it's a rarer color. Even if it was a refinish (I paid around the same price of what other mg-69s go for), it looks great and it wouldn't bother me.

Oh and I use the RE-20 pretty often. It's my main delay. The reverb by itself isn't great, but I can do cool shit by putting it before the Palisades. Are you stupid? The whole point of this anon's post >>73046826 was that no one could advise him because we didn't know what the amp sim would be heard through. Learn this language before you try to criticize someone you fucking money.

>>73049080
No it doesn't. It's sounds like a software ano trying to mimic a line 6.

Ibanez doesn't just have one or two versions of each model though. Even if the body type is and pickup setup is the same, the fretboard and body wood can vary drastically. It's easier to just look at the name and know exactly what you are getting in that specific guitar

My typo is less atrocious than your reading comprehension you third world favella living piece of shit. I wish I was your country's dictator or cartel leadet so I could have your fingers chopped off so no one would have to hear your shitty vibrato or read your stupid posts ever again. I'd be doing the world a sevice.

Fender and mesa tube amps sound great on these shitty headphones so why does this thing sound so bad. It's the source you fucking child not the output

I'd be there to call every single machete strike out. I'd personally whip you while I make you sharpen the blade with your feet bound. If you refused I'd put my boot against the back of your head and force your face into the grinder. I'd post a video on youtibe and /gg/ would be cheering me on.

I'm thinking about buying a Les Paul in alpine white. I've wanted one for a while

Is it worth it to save up for the "supreme" (pic related)? Or should I just one that's less flashy and cheaper? Is there a noticeable difference in sound/ build quality with the custom shop gibsons?

when the hell do my fingers stop hurting? when i first started playing i was doing classical and it was more of a sharp pain. now i'm strumming on classical and it's a burning pain. my calluses haven't gotten any bigger and my play time is always shortened because after a certain point of pushing through it just hurts a ridiculous amount. i'm mostly on nylon strings and sometimes strum on my steel acoustic or electric. been practicing at least every other day for about 2 years.

pic related isn't me. i have small circular calluses and my fingertips have flattened.

any tips to build them up or stop the pain?
>>
Beginner here, is there anything wrong with learning the one finger versions of guitar riffs?
>>
>>73047993
I bought a used Belle Epoch (as well as a Music Man 1x12) recently after listening to a lot of Thee Oh Sees and never turn it off now. Tape delay is my favorite guitar meme.
>>
>>73050620
how are you positioning your wrist? IN GENERAL, your wrist should be as un-arched as possible. this obviously isnt possible all the time, but fixing it to be more parallel with the ground can sometimes help the amount of pressure you need to finger.

>>73050654
like what, barre chords? what specifically? understanding the underlying chord dynamics is way more important than finger positions.

With their recent output I have no idea what "custom" is even supposed to mean anymore.
>>
>>73050620
Basically you just have to keep at it until you get deep calluses and the pain eventually goes away.
But you can augment a few things to help along the way:
1. A good exercise is to put just enough pressure on a string to play cleanly. This is very difficult to change over night but try and practice with this mindset.
2. Adjust the action on your guitar. It may be that the action is set up way too high. If it's an acoustic, then you probably would want to take it into the shop so they can work on the nut and bridge, or maybe replace it.
3. Try changing the strings on your guitar. You sacrifice some tone going lighter but once you get used to the lighter gauge, you can gradually move up.

Any other home recording nerds out there want to recommend a good interface for my macbook pro?
>>

>>
>>73051606
Any benefit of going the more expensive thunderbolt model?
Or should I stick with USB?
>>
>>73051655
USB will be less expensive. I have a USB, firewire interface and honestly dont experience any latency issues. The only reason to get a more expensive interface is having more inputs
>>
>>73051713
Thanks mate.
At the moment, I don't see why I would ever need more than 2 inputs.
>>
>>73051801
No problem. I would also suggest maxing out the RAM on your computer, and maybe adding second HD just for recording. Some software does better on a non OS installed hard drive.
>>
>>73051859
Thanks again for the advice.
Are you using any specific recording and amp modeling software?
Thinking if I should use a guitar - pedalboard - interface, then use an amp modeler software.
>>
I used 3 tuners to tune my guitar
My fender tuner tunes higher than the other
The online tuner I used is in the middle of the two
And my clip on tuners tunes lower than the others

Wat do?
Buy a quality tuning pedal?
>>
>>73050620
There is no way you have been practicing that often for 2 fucking years and havent gotten callouses yet
>>
>>73051904
I usually mic up my amp and compress and eq it within the software. Amplitude is decent for plugging straight into the interface. You can ever find a cheap used line6 pod and plug it into the interface. Experiment with what you have and make a choice based on that.
>>
>>73052638
Oh I use Pro Tools 11 and Logic Pro 9. PT I use for live instrument recording and Logic I use for composing everything on the computer.

Do they have a setting for changing the pitch of an A (eg 440hz to 442hz) I didn't realize one of my tuners had this until recently, my tuning had been a few cents off

Fender Bassbreaker 18/30 for example. Tried out the DSL40c thinking I'd buy it but chose the Fender over it. Sounded so much better.
Some other examples would be Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III, Vox AC15 C1, Orange Rocker 15. All are around the same price range, different features, but they all sound better than the DSL40C.
I recommend getting a used amp, since people often sell amps that have barely seen use with a hefty discount from the original price
>>
>>73053929
Depends what sound you want, the Marshall does those dirty dad rock tones better than anything else
>>
>>73053929
>Fender Bassbreaker 18/30
>no effects loop
>DSL40c
>no effects loop

Because it would put $5 on the price of the amp
