/daily/ - Hot Moms Edition

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Thread replies: 312

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

i can see why less bleep-ish people would like Easy Lee, but that choice of album cover probably hurts the album the most. The color of it is gross.

zappa and mothers - one size fits all

new second favorite zappa album. the prog flavors are pulled off really well on here never getting too jammy for its own good. inca roads is an absolute jam and a shorter more focused album really works for zappa although i think the soloing on pojama people sucks preeetty hard.
the more common and upfront jazzy piano is really nice. does zappa do any other heavy piano stuff, fish? i also love the zolo-ish intro on can't afford no shoes.

this was a fun little zappa marathon. having heard the entire mothers catalog is a nice thing to check off. i think i'll do a jazz chart next from stuff i have wishlisted on rym.
>>
>>72839698
Would highly rec peeping Roxy & Elsewhere, especially since so many of the Zappa albums you heard were often also partially recorded live. It's his most similar to One Size Fits All and I guarantee you'll get a kick out of it.

>does zappa do any other heavy piano stuff, fish? i also love the zolo-ish intro on can't afford no shoes.
If you're looking for more proggy/zolo stuff I'd rec Studio Tan. It's Zappa's arguably most "progressive" but a lot of it just doesn't do it for me. The final song, RDNZL, is one of his best songs if not the best song from the genre.

If you want mor Hot Rats-esque fusion/prog, I'd highly rec Waka/Jawaka and Sleep Dirt, which are often called Hot Rats 2 & 3.

Have you heard Lumpy Gravy btw? That's Zappa doing a bunch of pretty interesting experimental works that I think anyone who likes WOII4TM would enjoy.

If you're into Zappa's Synclavier works like Jazz From Hell I'd also rec Civilization Phase III and Feeding the Monkies at Ma Maison (an archival album of his 80s work).

The Best Band You Never Heard in Your Life, Make a Jazz Noise Here, and You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore 1 & 2 are also stellar live performances with more fun shit similar to Roxy.

If you want something more conventional with less wacky voices popping up everywhere, Zoot Allures might be something you might enjoy, though I only personally care for the s/t track at all.

If you want the humor back in full force with some great, expanding instrumentation, I'd rec Joe's Garage, Sheik Yerbouti, and You Are What You Is.

A jazz chart sounds cool though. What's your RYM? Would you wanna be added to this list: https://rateyourmusic.com/list/I_AM_FISH/_daily-rym-users/ ?

The Replacements - Tim (1985)1
>alternative rock, power pop

As long as I live I will never get the hype for this damn band. This is just the same brand of inoffensive, poppy alt rock they already did on Let It Be, with very little alterations. It’s more power poppy, I can definitely dig the Big Star influence, but the songs (save for “Bastards of Young”) aren’t that great or memorable. They’re decent little pop tunes, but they’re all cut from the exact same cloth. Tommy Ramone’s production isn’t terribly great either, everything here sounds paper-thin. The appeal is totally lost on me.

2.0+

The Meters - The Meters (1969)
>funk, new orleans R&B, deep funk

35 minutes of rock-solid, cool as shit instrumental funk. Can get a bit muzaky, being instrumental funk and all, but the band is too tight and too on point to ever let that become a huge problem. Every instrumentalist is playing super complex lines while making it sound so effortless. Beyond being a technical marvel, it’s just a really enjoyable listen, the grooves are deep and soulful, and it’s all produced incredibly well.

3.0+

Dr. John - Locked Down (2012)
>new orleans R&B

Legitimately on par with Gris-Gris, which is incredibly impressive considering the two albums have a 44 year gap between each other, but I’m still not sold on Dr. John’s sound. This is a lot less free than Gris-Gris, a lot more grounded in funk and CCR-esque swamp rock rather than rock. As such, the sound loses some urgency, but given the fact that the dude was in his 70s when this came out, it’s alright. The bluesier tracks aren’t that great, Dan Auerbach turns in a good performance but he also brings some songwriting influence in that takes away from the better tracks. The funkier tracks are the best, but the focus on blues makes this more spotty than it needs to be. Still, damn impressive for an album so late in Dr. John’s career.

2.5+

N E W C H A R T

I like the idea of themed charts and this is really my first full one because they take forever to sort.

Row 1: /daily/ recs
Row 2: Japan
Row 3: Post-Punk
Row 4: Also Post-Punk
Row 5: Vidya OSTs
Row 6: Jazz
Row 7: Jazz Fusion
Row 8: Bleeps (took some liberties with that name lmao)
Row 9: Music in non-English languages (no Japan)
Row 10: 2017 + a D2D album I wanna hear cuz this year sucks and I'm not interested in anything that hasn't already leaked

What do y'all think? Y'all hype for anything in particular?

>>72841629
how much have you dove into grindcore? TECHNICALLY it's an off-shoot of hardcore punk, but stylistically it's basically just the best version of metal (if you ask anyone but RYM and transgod). Highly rec Pig Destroyer, Discordance Axis, and Insect Warfare.

Have you heard Colors by Between the Buried and Me? That's basically the only prog metal album I like.
>>
>>72842612
Be sure to check out that Andy Stott album.
And thanks for your recommendations, I should probably listen to more grindcore. I thought Discordance Axis was alright, and I'll listen to that Between the Buried and Me album.

I finished these a few days ago, slow on posting them due to getting a new laptop and a cold.

>Fishmans - 98.12.28 男達の別れ
Ok what the fuck do I say about this other than how beautiful it is, by the second track I was already crying. The fact that this being the last thing Shinji played with the band before he died, with the band disbanding as a result really adds a whole new perspective to appreciate the music. There are moments that aren't as great as others but soon enough it will dive back into it's best. Walking in the Rhythm isn't as great as it's studio counterpart sadly.

Then the 2nd disc starts with that chilling siren on ゆらめき in the Air, wonderful track. Then It ends with a 41 min version of Long Season, the moment I've been waiting for, and it is miles ahead of the studio version. It eradicates all the bad things and improves on everything the studio version did creating another one of the best songs I have ever heard ever. This whole album is too sincere to be real.
11-/11

>The Cornell Lab of Ornithology - Voices of North American Owls
Quite a cozy relaxing album, I originally thought this was going to be nothing but Owl sounds, but there's also the variety of background noises too and It's quite interesting to see how all the different species sound and act. Great memories of going out camping. The 2nd disc does suffer from the recordings being too short to fully absorb them bringing down the score from a 7- originally.
6+/11

>Dead - Musical Abortions
My original score was a 2+ so I'm super glad I revisited this. It's fun, though definitely lacking.
6/11

That's the essentials done, listening to Shamepai's next.

Tragic Mulatto - Judo For The Blind (rym robot man)
You'd expect something being a "punk jazz" to be weirder and more of a mess, but this thing is actually quite consistent. It's not very complex, incredibly accessible for something so experimental. While maybe the lyrics are a bit wannabe witty, you don't even pay attention, bc of the voice's charisma.

Pere Ubu - Datapanik in the Year Zero (Terminus)
It's got a remarkable rhythm. The sound is great, though I expected something more energetic and catchy (Pere Ubu is my go-to for experimental catchy). To me the vocals' potential wasn't used to the fullest here as well.

Now we witness the battle of Shamepai with a machine. Since bot doesn't have an overall rating, Shamepai's previous successful performance wouldn't matter in this final round. Will humans be eventually beaten by the machines as it was intended by like idk common sense? Or will the sexually frustrated boy from Venezuela save the humanity from its inevitable submission to robot overlords? We'll c........

Normil Hawaiians - What's Going On? (rym robot man) vs John Fahey - Guitar Vol. 4 (The Great San Bernardino Birthday Party and Other Excursions) (Shamepai)
I don't normally rate post-punk that high, but this Normil Hawaiians piece is amazing. It's like a thought-through mechanism - every single track has its distinct function and is essential to whole piece. Has an amazing sound too. Also, #freetibet.
I liked Fahey, though I heard him for the first time, I guess primitivism is really my thing, since I like Basho as well.

So that's it, folks. Shamepai saved the humanity and gets to rec up to 15 albums for a drone. Robot, who placed second recs 10 albums. Terminus can rec up to 7 albums, being on a third place.

Kanzler won the bet, predicting Shamepai's victory. Since he placed the bet very early in the tourney, he gets to rec up to 10 albums.

Jozef van Wissem - When Shall This Bright Day Begin
It's decent. Rather simple and narrow, but sounds pretty good. I actually expected something more edgy and too arrogant for its own good.

Stefano Guzzetti - Leaf
P much your basic soundtrackcore neoclassical boring album with a few standpoints.

ELMA - Music For Trombone Drones
It's drone noise something, it's not so bad, but nothing outstanding really.

Got to meet Sondre Lerche last week at his concert, it was great. The original opening act was unavailable, so Sondre opened with a solo acoustic set. I got to sit right next to him while he played and everyone sang along. It was wonderful. Then at the end of his main set, he got in the crowd and everyone danced together. Afterwards I met him (pic related), and he signed my faces down CD. I feel so fortunate to have met my favorite musician! It was a marvelous show, all things considered.

YMO: nice blissed out synthpop, like video game cities at nighttime. Hits a sweet spot between Plantasia and P-Model/Polysics. Kind of hard to hear the same Hosono from Pacific (except Cosmic Surfin) and Hosono House, but that just makes me want to dig into his stuff further.

Ja Ja Ja: goofy fun German new wave from 82, like earliest TMBG with Poly Styrene singing, and sax, and jazz, and rapping. It shouldn't work, and it kind of doesn't, which makes it does(?). Bonus for having a full album YouTube video where the drummer shows up and answers all the comments.

David Tudor: wew tedious. Stretching the definition of what could count as music until it broke, these pieces don't impress. Unlistenable but not in an interesting way. see Xerophonics for something similar but listenable

some random stuff ive heard in the past few days between other charts

the shower scene from psycho - exploding hits!

i loooooove this one. crazy zolo-y experimental new wave with an incredibly andogynous sounding male singer, AKA lamb-core to the highest degree. the songs are often really upbeat as youd expect from zolo, but filled with really harsh synths a la zom zoms and really noisy heavy guitar. there are even hendrix and three dog night covers. will be lostening to for a looooong time.

kraus - end tomorrow

this was alright. its basically hardcore noisy punk songs but more indie pop type wailing vocals over top. i'm probably being a little more lenient with this one because its been ages since i've really listened to any exceedingly noisy music and forgot how good the best stuff actually is but its not bad. gets pretty old after a while but good for an emotional dump.

MoHa! - kriisvak valgus

very short single. noise rock played at the speed of sound and then dropped into a blender and glitched into a big wonderful mess of sound. very fun.

extra life - made flesh

doesnt quite live up to their previous album to this one in the unique at osphere department but its still really nice avant prog. charlie looker's vocals on this one are possibly even more impressive than on secular works, some of the best vocal acrobatics ive heard in a while.

henry cow - western culture

a bit dissapointing really. when you hear a henry cow album you sort of expect to just be blown away because theyre henry frackin cow. slightly uninspired sounding. i'll have to relisten in the future.

charizma & peanut butter wolf - big shots

very very nice. peanut butter wolf is a master at making sample based old school sounding beats and charizma is an amazing rapper with some very clever lyrics. i don't ever have much to say about hip hop other than "yeah i enjoyed this" or "i did not like this" but this has definitely become one of my favorite hip hop albums ever.

(1/2)
>>
>>72854476
(2/2)

jorge ben - forca bruta

this one made me cry with its opening track AND closer but in a positive way which doesn't happen to me very often. forca bruta is the joy of music in one tiny package. i remember hearing a tabua de esmeralda a long time ago and not being super into it but i think its about time to relisten.

various artists - lost in the stars: the music of kurt weill

i didn't love this as much as i expected to being a prior big fan of kurt weill and several of the artists featured on this comp (VDP, todd rundgren, carla bley, zorn, etc) but it was still a nice listen. any van dyke parks i haven't heard yet is a treat of course and his additions didnt dissapoint.

cheating spouses caught on tape - your emotions makes you a monster

oh gosh no. this is just really bad sounding garbo. this is a warning sign to be wary of an album's genre tags on rym, no matter how amazing they sound.

Orlando Julius & Ashiko - Love Peace & Happiness
>Jazz-Funk

Recommended to me by our friend Pom, here’s some nice jazz-funk from Nigeria. There’s lots of corny elements - happy-go-lucky vocals, hippie-dippie lyrics, etc. But fuck it, I love everything about this. Plus, what else do you expect from an album with this title? The sax on here is groovy as fuck, the keyboard is a subtle but fantastic addition and the basslines are always nice and bouncy. The closer “Get the Funk” sounds something like P-Funk would’ve made around the era and it’s probably the best cut on here. Great stuff from front to back.

3.5/5

Boots For Dancing - The Undisco Kids
>Dance Punk, Post-Punk

Well I’ve somehow burnt myself out on this style of music. Every time I hear a vocalist that sounds like James Chance, David Byrne, etc, it just makes me want to scream. You can only make funk that sounds anxious and a little off-kilter so many ways and this is just another addition in that style. Nice grooves and you’ll probably love this if you’re into post-punk. But this sound is honestly starting to wear on me the more I hear it.

3

Justin Timberlake - FutureSex/LoveSounds
>Dance Pop

Idk why, this cover freaks me the fuck out. Broken plastic should not be that close to an achilles. Anyway...

I’m not much of a modern pop/R&B fan but this album feels very well done. The production is handled mostly by Timbaland and it’s pretty obvious. Nice electronic beats with that weird percussion and a futuristic feel. There’s some duds along the way (notably “Damn Girl” which blowwwws) but honestly this is consistently entertaining. Features from TI, Three Six(!) and Snoop help carry this, along with hits like “SexyBack” and “What Comes Around” which I’ll honestly never get tired of. Not amazing by any means and the second half kinda drags - but I was pleasantly surprised.

They're great, I got to see them for pretty cheap because my friends sold their tickets, but they're usually pretty expensive (Friend bought them for ~$80 and I got it for $25). They play a nice variety throughout their career and are pretty good performers. If you like the music and are willing to give up a pretty penny I don't see why not. They aren't always that expensive though. Depends on the venue.

Triangle^3 finished >>72861711 felt like knocking out the last album tonight actually. Overall: 3.00
>Devo - Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!
Smiled so hard when the first track played, as I've heard this before from a long time ago and never knew what it was called. ye ye ye ye YE-YE-YE-YE-YE-YE-YEEEEAH! such a banger. The rest was awesome tool, a very solid punk album. Besides Uncontrollable Urge, Gut Feeling/ Slap Your Momma was an amazing track as well. Both of those were the highlights.
4/5
>Shahid Parvez - The Art of the Sitar
I'm not the type to be condescending about what people enjoy.. but I'm really having trouble understanding how this could amongst someone's favorites. It was horribly monotonous, which I mean could have been fine if it weren't over a fucking hour long. The only variety that I felt was when the other 1-2 instruments accompanied the Sitar, which was more enjoyable, but still not something I'd go out of my way to listen to. Oh, and I also don't generally enjoy how a Sitar sounds. Just not my cup of tea.
2/5
>The Alan Lee Jazz Quartet - Gallery Concerts 1973
Alright, the kind of thing I'd listen to as background music, definitely not something I'd be excited to sit down and actively listen to though.

Converge - Petitioning the Empty Sky (1996)
>metalcore, hardcore punk

Kind of odd to hear Converge play metalcore that’s so straightforward and hardcore influenced, considering their position as one of the most complex, jagged bands out there. It’s a bit too amateur, and the band’s description of their early work as a bunch of teens playing leftover Slayer riffs is pretty accurate, but this is decently enjoyable. It’s fast-paced, energetic, and it boasts some great guitar work. The poppier songs fucking blow though.

2.5+

Al Green - Let's Stay Together (1972)
>southern soul, smooth soul

The sheer earnesty in Green’s vocals is really endearing, and the title track is a damn classic. Smooth soul just doesn’t appeal to me, though, and this is no exception. There’s no grit to any aspect of the albums. Green’s vocals are clean and pristine, the instrumentation goes down easy, loaded with string arrangements, and the songs are affable love ballads. Nothing bad at all, just really middle of the road.

2.5

http://i.imgur.com/GyjTTnE.jpg

Harry Styles - Harry Styles (2017)
>pop rock

It’s an odd feeling to be simultaneously pleasantly surprised by and disappointed by an album. “Sign of the Times”, the album’s first single, is an epic, bombastic pop rock song in the style of ‘70s piano rock troubadors. It’s an incredibly well-done song, catchy and pleasant without sacrificing any emotional edge. Sadly, it’s the albums only good tracks. The rest of the album ranges from generic, formulaic pop rock to swaggering, forced-seeming glam/hard rock. Really cool to see a big pop musician like this do something (comparitively) original, and the talent is obviously there, it just needs to be applied to something a lot better.

Which ones? I'm listening to Giant Steps right now and loving it.

Also, is Kind of Blue kinda overrated? I've haven't heard much jazz, but of what I've heard I didn't enjoy that one so much compared to Goodman/Coltrane/Adderly, and I actually play trumpet.
>>
>>72862884
>is Kind of Blue kinda overrated
So What is a jam, but otherwise I'd have to kind of agree with this. In the context of Jazz history/influence I can see why it's so highly rated, but personally I don't dig it that much.

his fusion/avant-garde stuff is much more interesting to me.

Good morning /daily/!

This shit is pretty GOAT so far. If my Ciaconna is just as flawless and emotionally powerful, I'm sensing an eventual 10. The performance is very swift and manages to get every note across with full force.
>>
>>72863049
Playing it safe for now, but 9+ for damn sure. The immersion during the ending of the second partita is broken down like a sudden awakening from the applause. Prior to this the crowd has been pretty much silent.
>>
>>72862884
Giant Steps, It Takes a Nation and Automatic for the People! Glad you're digging Giant Steps, there's some ridiculous solos all over that album.

Also agree with Fish. It's a solid entry point, was an important influence and all that but it's definitely overrated imo. Great way to get into the genre though especially if you explore all the musicians involved

John Coltrane - Giant Steps

>Hard Bop

I'm going to warn you, this is jazz review, and I don't know much about jazz historically even though I played it in high school. It's probably filled with misinformation, bad opinions and incorrect analysis.

I actually listened to this one twice before I rated it, both because I wanted to listen to it again and because there's so much going on in this album.

Giant Steps is usually a frantic, explosive album, but at the same time, so pristine and polished it has a very good feel to it. It sounds chaotic, but Giant Steps is so well crafted that it bends these instruments, and concepts, into something very fresh and meticulous. But what impresses me so much is that everything here is done in a very satisfying way, somehow creating emotions when this album at first glance doesn't seem particularly emotional. Whatever Giant Steps does, it does it well--from Coltrane's constantly interesting solos, to the piano chords, to the very light and uplifting percussion. That being said, it all kinda blurs together, and it's all very good, but rarely excellent. There's never a dull moment here, but just a few that are extremely interesting.

Extra shoutout to Mr. P.C, for being fucking amazing, even moreso than the rest of the album.

quick one before i go out for beer and minigolf

>dave burrell - echo
incoherently aggressive throughout the first side, a freight train full of percussive and brass instruments, the second side eases it back with the titular echo i guess with a still manic yet reseved pullback

>Romano, Sclavis, Texier & Le Querrec - Carnet de routes
free jazz meets chamber music - soft spoken free for all grooves that inspire a get down and jive attitude. a hell of a lot of fun and free jazz you can play at your girlfriend

>daughters - canada songs
middling mathgrindcore whatevertheyplay, very middle of the road and none of what made their other two albums stand out as unique. splashes of what's to come persist but nothing spectacular

>martin harley - mojo fix
prertty standard bluesman persona on show thruout the album - the highlights are the more fuzz-addled stomp heavy tunes, working for the man and whatever. rest are the usual enjoyable but forgettable blues tunes

>as the sun sets - 7744
p boring grindcore, the sort of stylistic benchmark the whole scene seems able to reach

>clipping - wriggle
the title track is out of this world groovy and with sampling from maybe the grooviest power electronic track there is it's bound to be a winner. rest of the ep fails to live up to it but at so short a time and with that high a high who cares?

>isaiah rashad - the suns tirade
v mellow beats with p mellow vibes and lyrical delivery, rashad presents something more humble yet more deserving of praise and respect than his cilvia demo

>the soft boys - underwater moonlight
I WANNA DESTROY YOU
great power pop, siq riffin and great melodies and just a lot of fun but when it falls into more balladery-esque songwriting it stumbles and ruins the momentum

D'Angelo - Voodoo
It's ok, tends to meander a bit without actually doing anything interesting, and it's really dang long

Drugstore - Drugstore
It's a bit rubbish and boring

Meat Puppets - Up on the Sun
I didn't care for it.

Ethan Chandler - Rituals
Ethyboy's neck brah
It's decent, a little unfocused in the end, I felt the first two tracks were way better.

Fushitsusha - 欠片: Unheard Pieces of the Late XXth and Early XXIst Century
It's the first Haino/Fushitsusha thing I've listened to for quite a while and it was pretty hit and miss in my opinion, I don't really like it when Haino loses control of his sound and it devolves into a nightmare of static and loops, but this was ok.

Hey bois
I've been doing good. School ended about 2 weeks ago so not doing radio rn. Been listening to a lot of Old-Time music and hillbilly blues most recently

A lot of shit has happened tho.
Gotta apologize first and foremost to letov for bailing on our chart, shit just got so busy and stressful that I just had to sort of shut down a few parts of my life.

I saw Acid Mothers play, they did a cover of the Wizard by Black Sabbath and Flying Teapot by Gong. It was fucking insane. Also played part of Pink Lady Lemonade which made me cum instantly.

Also saw Jandek perform. Def one of the weirdest/coolest shows I've ever been to. I don't think I ever would've expecredit him to play what he did. It was like weird avant-garde funk/90's rnb. Needless to say there was a lot of bizarre poetry and interpretive dancing.

Also also I'm dating Daniel Bachman‘s sister now which is p cool

You do you. I also have a sitar album on there. It's all about musicianship. "Raga" literally means the coloring/dyeing of fabcrics--i.e., it's an improvised expression taken to the extreme. Consider what kind of atmosphere is conveyed, how a long piece changes over its course (it's not monotonous). Not ragging on you, but there's a lot that needs to be considered and maybe isn't with this kind of music
>>
>>72871311

>Luciano Cilio - Dialoghi del presente
Listened to this before realizing it was somewhere on this chart. Good taste for having this as your top 3. Fucking amazing stuff.
"This record makes me feel guilty for violating a troubled man's privacy. Listening to this is listening to Cilio's deepest inner workings, I truly am amazed how much this doesn't feel like music, but rather sounds of a contemplative soul. He, at least as I interpret him through his music, saw the beauty of life.. wanted that beauty and happiness that life had to offer, but just could not obtain it, as he was washed in overwhelming loneliness, which inevitably ended in his suicide at the young age of thirty three. Of course this is just my interpretation, I am not claiming I have an ounce of knowledge on his life and his reasons for ending it.. but a record like this feels way too human to the point where it should be impossible to produce emotions like this without truly swimming in them yourself, you simply could not compose something like this unless you had a very strong reason to, along with heavy experience in the emotions that are portrayed here. You hear the beauty in life, briefly enough as to give you a taste of something which you will never experience, only to quickly be reminded of your current state. This is a memorial to all those who have been overcome by such emotions, whether it be loneliness or an existential crisis-esque contemplative obsession, and I will without a doubt have a special place in my heart for these people for as long as I live."
