wut. Just keep your strings clean by wiping them off whenever you play and clean your fretboard every few months.

Yes. I have it and use it. I already play piano so I had a head start on music reading, but I do think that he makes the music reading pretty accessible and easy. And he does start including tabs partway through.
>>
>>72818772
I'm using noise in the broadest sense possible, new gear is constantly being put out and the only people actually putting it to use are experimental guitarists. Meanwhile rockfags just keep looking for reissues of pedals to sound like Jimmy Page or whatever other 70s rocker.
>>
>>72818866
most of the people who buy those pedals are just richfags who can waste hundreds of dollars on their collection of pedals

literally for what purpose? there are hundreds of hobbies that that are more rewarding and take a less autistic practice regimen to master. i understand people that make enough money to survive off guitar needing to be proficient, but it's just a hobby for anyone else. anyways, if you do practice 8 hours a day for a decade and become the greatest guitarist on the planet, then what? play more bars(if you even get into a band), do open mics, try to make it as a solo artist, make youtube videos? personality matters more than skill, you'll have more experiences in music if you're a mediocre guitarist with a personality everyone like than some weirdo who locks himself in the basement for 8 hours at a time playing to a clicking box.
>>
guys i dont have a capo but several songs i wanna play require one. is there a way to make one with household items? the pencil+rubberband version doesnt work for electric btw. probably has to do with the curvature of the fretboard.

lots of old punk albums, and honestly a lot of them i dont actually know, but i remember the chord progressions from relative pitch so i just find the root and go. im right like 9/10 times. im really good with relative pitch, a lot of albums i listen to a bunch i can usually fake my way through.
>>
>>72818398
Green Day's "American Idiot"
Black Sabbath's "Paranoid"

That's about it, I think. I might be able to play all of Slipknot's "Vol. 3" after a couple listens, but other than those 3 albums I only know a handful of songs from the albums I listen to.

I could probably play most if not all of "Are You Experienced?", too.
>>
>>72822393
I could never get the slides in iron man right, mine always sounded like shit
>>
>>72822227
there's a bunch of different ways. most people keep it somewhat close to the bridge so they can palm mute quickly. i had to re-train my picking hand a few years ago so i could go back and forth between palm muting and floating my wrist, took a decent amount of work to get out of the habit of constantly palm muting and anchoring your hand down.

when you free float your wrist there's no anchor points and you have to get used to picking with small with your fingers
>>
>>72822418
You just gotta feel them out. The "Paranoid" tab book was the first guitar tab book I ever got and, looking back, some of the transcriptions were really off, or at least not the most intuitive way to play certain riffs/leads.

My approach to learning Hendrix tunes was kind of the opposite: I figured out most of them by ear or just from looking up chord charts and working out what the actual riffs were from there. I feel like I got a lot closer to how riffs and solos were actually played, which also speaks to how intuitive Hendrix's style was.
>>
>>72822436
So basically my arm rests on the guitars body and I have to use my wrist a lot more?
Is that what all of the guitar players I see do?

>>
>>72822546
yes, you lightly rest your arm on the guitar and let your wrist and fingers do all the work, mostly the wrist.. you don't really want to use your arm or shoulder. some shredders do use their arm though, petrucci does. it's kind of difficult to describe what he does, but he's basically picking with his wrist and fingers but he's moving his arm up and down to switch strings so he can maintain his picking speed

It's kinda like getting a V6 Mustang or Camaro. Sure, they're pretty cool and you can go fast in them, but you'll always wish you had just spent a little extra and gotten the V8.
And every time you're ever pulled up next to the V8 version at a stoplight, you're going to feel inferior and have buyers remorse.

Just spend a little more and get the real thing.

>>
>>72824034
How was that? I posted twice earlier asking about timing? I'm a beginner and don't know any musicians to give me feedback. Its difficult for me to count while I'm playing, and id like a different perspective.
>>
>>72819897
What you're saying doesn't even fucking make sense, most noise is about the texture but the stuff underneath is usually just a drone or a couple chords, it's not technical except for the gear. Now go sit and play some blues licks in the corner
>>
>>72824268
It was fine, probably took me a lot longer than it would a trained musician but I really like that little lick and wanted to be able to play the song. I don't practice reading music that often unless there's a jazz piece I really want to know, but I'm trying to get better at it. As far as timing/counting goes, I'm absolutely horrendous at reading rhythms so I'll usually listen to the song first so that I can get a sense of the melody and rhythm before looking at a transcription. Maybe after 20 minutes of staring at the same eight bars over and over I'll pick up on the rhythm without having to consult a recording but I don't practice it enough to figure it all out in my head. It's a process, man, and I've been playing for a long time. I developed my sense of timing from playing along to backing tracks or playing with other musicians.
>>
>>72824501
I apologize, but i was referring to the vocaroo I posted, that you responded to.

I thought yours was good, but I'm light years from being able to decipher whether or not yours was in time or not. I wouldn't even be able to tell you which time signature it was in.
How would I go about that? Would I just count bpm?
>>
>>72824554
It's in 5/4, counting beats per minute wouldn't do you any good because all you'd end up with is a fraction of beats over seconds in real time, rather than beats per measure, I suppose you could make a rough guess as to what the time signature was from bpm, but then how would you know that exactly if it was, say, 120 beats/60 seconds, which is divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, etc.?

The best way to determine time signature, at least without having a well-developed sense of rhythm, is to simply count out a rhythm to yourself over the music. Most music is in 4/4, so find the pulse of the music and count "1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4..." and see if it fits: if something seems off, you might be in 3/4 or 5/4 or 6/8, so count in groups of 3s or 5s or whatever until you get to a point where you're locked into the groove.

A drummer I used to work with said that he would find the rhythm by focusing on whatever piece of the drum kit on a recording was being used the most often, usually the high hat.
>>
>>72824684
Gotcha. I played drums for about six months about 7 years ago but i never really retained any of the information.

That is in 3/4
How would I count that while playing it?
Bc I want to say 1, 2e+a, 3, 4e+a
But that wouldnt work. Should I do 1, 2e+a, 3+e+a? Or does that even matter as long as im keeping in time?

So what I think you're doing is forgetting to count rests as beats here. Really, you're playing in 6/4 here so you should be counting "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 and", with the "and" after the "1" and "4" being a rest in each measure.

I mean I get that, too. But when reading about progressing at this and generally being a good guitarist, I picked up that playing with a metronome and developing rhythm/time internally is often overlooked. I'm just trying to be thoroughly so I dont develop any bad habits that will be hard to undo in the long run.
Also when playing along it's difficult for me to maintain the tempo. I've noticed that a lot of times I'll play faster than I should be, or dragging along, or playing catchup. I'm trying to develop steady rhythm.

Excellent thinking man.
I also find switching between different subdivisions is a good exercise.
Put on a metronome and play a scale, and switch between playing eighth notes, triplets, and sixteenth notes. Mix in some polyrhythms if you wanna get fancy.
>>
>>72825833
Noted. Will do.
I've just started using a metronome consistenly. I've been playing for about 4 months now. I'm really trying to focus on 2 or 3 things at a time, and keep a steady daily routine of serious practice for at least an hour. Its difficult to gauge progress without another person's perspective, but I can definitely tell I'mgetting better every day.

I need major advice /gg/

I'm moving out of my parents and I sold a guitar my mother bought me after working for a couple of months to save the money up, but I haven't shipped the thing yet. The problem is that I really don't like the guitar and my mother and I aren't good friends anymore and I don't really want to talk to her anymore when I leave.

Am I going to regret shipping this guitar? I could use the money, but it was my only guitar for over three years and my mom bought it for me, but I also sort of don't want to touch it ever again too. I want to go for a 57 style strat and this thing is more early 60s.

I want to move into a new chapter of my life, and getting a new guitar would be part of that, but I would be replacing this thing my mom paid for and I played brand new for over 3 years. Is it time to move on or should I let my mom hold onto the thing for when I'm older or some shit? I don't really want to play it. This is such a hard decision.

you shouldn't be going out of tune when you play hard. you need to stretch the strings out, like literally take a hold of a string and stretch it up then retune and keep stretching and retuning until the tuning is stable.
>>
>>72828141
My dad got me a guitar as a grad gift but I sold it to upgrade after 5 years. I told him how much I appreciated it but that I needed to get a guitar that I jived with more. He was very understanding.

>>72829033
People use this trick all the time with bolt on necks with fixed bridges to get a light vibrato effect. I'd just practice keeping the guitar in the middle position as you play. You can also try to screw the neck on tighter and make sure that it is truly flush. You might have to shim it if it's not possible to get it perfectly flat.
>>
>>72829063
Yeah I do the Belew thing where you push down on the neck for like a whammy effect, I'd like to be able to do it deliberately but not accidentally. I notice it's worse with my Epi LPJ, but that's a piece of shit
>>
>>72829094
In that case, I think all you can do is practice.

Listen to the metronome daily 20 mins at different BPM. Count beats 1,2,3,4 with beep. Get comfortable with counting at different BPM. Use of foot to tap keep rhythm was also taught to me.
When practicing on Guitar, start with the tempo you are comfortable. Gradually increase tempo by 10 BPM. Remember control is more important than speed. Once you gain control, you will gain speed automatically with practice.
I'm a beginner so that's all I can tell. Hope it helps. Other anons have given shitty answers, that's why I pitched in.

i have an electro acoustic similar to this, probably whatever the cheapest variation is, but it seems fucked. at the bottom of the bridge where i circled, its like the bridge has pulled up from the body a bit and ripped the crappy plastic coating. the action is also garbage so even open chords are painful as fuck to sound. i'm too paranoid to even tune it up, a step down and it already feels overly tight.

i also didn't know how stringing it worked since i never used a bridge like this before. for some reason i thought they were literally held in with the pressure from the pegs, rather than sitting in grooves. and i used phosphorus bronze strings that might have been for electric. should i just try restringing it with bronze acoustic strings or take it in somewhere?

if you have a peg bridge just pull them up with pliers.

if the actions too high look into truss rod adjustment; as long as you have a allen key the right size youll be fine.

i would recommend switching to proper strings for an acoustic guitar, electric strings aren't often a thick enough gauge.

also just know that tension on an acoustic will often always be high, i dont rightly know why but goddamn are they every good to callous your hands
>>
>>72829049

Anything thicker than 1.12 is unnecessary and muffles the full sound of the strings. You want a thicker sound use dick or fingers.

First one up is super easy:

No, but definitely closer than some of the other guesses. Think guitar-centric, '60s rock.
>>
>>72835556
i like blues wankery and mellow major stuff on the neck pickup

Yeah what that guy said
what kind of music do you like?

noodle around with the blues scale until you find something you like. make it 12 bars.
in blues dominant chords without function as dominant is a ok so play around with those

Hey Joe,

here's another easy one.

Dammit. And he was correct.

Oh well, here's number 2. Guess this short and sweet solo from this band's short and sweet hit:

Oh, you weren't just trying to get your clyp to be noticed more to get more plays to feel better about yourself? Then you must be retarded to not realize you were playing something else, not the theme from star wars.

sounds better than amplitube you fuse dicked motherfucker

That wasn't my recording, that was somone else's. I've only posted 2 so far, the first was Hey Joe and the second was >>72836150, which hasn't been guessed yet.

>>72836761
Quirky vibe going on there. Then at around 1:20 you used too many clichés one after the other... Like you went on auto-pilot. Otherwise, it was kinda cool.
>>
Would I have enough room to dig out space for a middle humbucker in between the neck and bridge in a 2 pickup SG? I love me a 3 pickup SG but they're very hard to come by.
>>
every guitar solo is just a different combination of said guitarist's set of licks applied to the song's chords, plus some bends and the intervals that he likes

prove me wrong
brotip: you cant
>>
>>72838051
guitars with 3 pickups need to be tossed directly into a fire

/gg/ rate my bands new track. Still needs to be mixed and messed with a bit, but pretty much done.

Can humbuckers work for Shoegaze?
>>
>>72838206
Holdsworth was absolutely unlistenable though. Sure, he could play it all and was a wizard on the guitar, but nothing he played sounded melodic or musical at all. It just sounded like him playing random notes and calling it jazz so people wouldn't question it.
>>
When is Fender going to stop making the same old shit and actually come up with something new?

Brands like Ibanez and Shecter and ESP and many others are constantly coming out with new models and innovation, yet Fender just has the same 3 or so models that haven't changed in decades.
>>
>>72838590
teles are the perfect guitar though
>>
>>72838608
Seems pretty lazy to me.
>>
>>72822077

not that guy, I just want you to know that I've been playing guitar for almost half my life and you just destroyed me anon

>tfw
>>
>>72838590
If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Plus Fender models are very easy to mod. It's pretty easy to find a cheap used Mexican Strat to use as a mod platform.

It's like a Subaru. A lot of people buy them not because of what they are stock but to do a bunch of crazy shit to them.

>geet with HSH/SSS wirings
>>
>>72838318
I really got into it. I was waiting for the guitar to fuck up... when that note was held, I thought "here comes the suck" but the suck never came. Good job!

Now what the fuck is up with the drums? The main lick being duped by the snare? And the rest was like some moron skinhead trampling my garden with his cherry Docs. Change it up at the logical transition points, for fuck's sake. I'm not a drummer but this track needs more of a modernized Stuart Copeland approach.

>>72838660
>I hate 3 pickup guitars because my pick hits the middle pickup and it makes me play worse REEEEEEEEE
>>
>>72838421
>I never actually listened to Holdsworth so he's unlistenable.
How about some opinions on guitars you've never played. Keep the streak going!
>>
>>72838704
>hitting the middle pup
what in tarnation
>>
>>72838318
not much to complain about, but the weakest point is the drumming, he's playing it too straight in the first half of the song, i was hearing fills in my head at certain points

There have been quite a few new Fenders over the years... Heartfield, Venus(?), Cobain, Toronado, Pawnshop Series, etc. They try. They fail. They go back to what they know. It's not for lack of trying.
>>
>>72838748
That's a legitimate argument I've heard against 3 pickup guitars.

For what it's worth I've been playing Strats for 9 out of the 11 years I've been playing guitar so I'm pretty used to avoiding the middle pup

aside from that does anyone in this chan even bother with geet other than fender/gibby? schecter meme-ing
btw are there any leftyfags around here
>>
>>72838847
anon i cant really relate since i always hover my hand above the bridge, so my pick never landed onto any of the pups. also faster access to palm muting
>>
>>72838856
I like to stick to my strats but I owned a Schecter C-1 Elite for awhile and I've been kicking myself for trading it since the day I did.
>>
>>72838318
dont like the genre myself but sounds fine
>>
>>72836761
>>72837975
the idea was to use that electric solo that i recorded months ago and i liked, onto a song, so i experimented playing the same chords on a slower tempo and quieter way, then growing to the electric
